INSTRUCTION FOR DETERMINING
DATES OF DANISH FEAST DAYS.
THE
Church records often indicate that an event
took place on a specific feast day or a stipulated
period of time before or after a certain feast
day. In such cases, the actual day and month of
the event should be calculated using the feast
day tables.
FIXED FEAST DAYS are those which occur on
the same day of the month each year.
Example: Epiphany is on 6 January every year
Christmas Day (Juledag) is on 25
December every year.
MOVABLE FEAST DAYS are those based on
a movable feast. Easter is the most common
movable feast, occurring between 22 March and
25 April each year, a range of .35 days. Seventeen weeks of the ecclesiastical calendar are
dependent upon this variable.
FERIA - Relating to week days.
Feria 2
Monday
Feria 3 - Tuesday
Feria 4 - Wednesday
Feria 5 - Thursday
Feria 6
Friday
Feria 7 - Saturday
DOM. or DOML (Dominical - Dominicalis, or
dominus) - Relating to Christ or to the Lord's
day, or pertaining to Sunday.
Example: Dom. Trinit. 1678 (Trinitatis Sunday
in the year 1678). ToDeterminethis
date:
1. Find the year 1678 on Table D,

CALENDAR PROBLEMS IN RESEARCH
A day is measured by one complete turn of
the earth on its axis, while a year is the time it
takes the earth to complete one trip in its orbit
around the sun. As it happens there are about
January 1969
The Danish Genealogical Helper - To Help You Discover Your Danish Ancestors
365.242216 days in a year. Inasmuch as this
number is almost 365.25 a system of leap years
was worked out by Julius Caesar. This system
was called the Julian calendar. It had a year of
365 days plus an extra day every four years.
The extra day was added to the end of the month
of February. The Julian year was longer than
the actual year and by the year 1582 the error
totaled ten days. Pope Gregory xm instituted
a new calendar to correct the error and our
present calendar is named after him. He
ordered 10 days dropped from the year 1582
and so brought the equinox back into its proper
place on the calendar year. Because the Julian
Calendar was too longby 3 days every 400 years,
the Gregorian calendar provided that the Leap
Years Day should be omitted 3 times each 400
years by dropping that day in each centennial
year that could not be divided by 4 without
leaving a remainder. The years 1700, 1800,
and 1900, for example, were not to be leap
years, but the year 2000 would be. All Catholic
countries adopted the new calendar. DENMARK ADOPTED THE GREGORIAN CALENDAR on February 19, 1700. This date, 19 Feb.
1700, became 1 Mar. 1700 on the Gregorian
calendar. The year 1700 was leap year only in
countries still using the Julian Calendar. To
determine dates occurring in the year 1700 the
date 19 Feb. is important. TABLE D IS ARRANGED TO TABULATE THE CHANGE FROM
THE JULIAN TO THE GREGORIAN CALENDAR. All years prior to 19 Feb. 1700 are
according to the Julian Calendar and all years
tabulated on Table Dafter 19 Feb. 1700 are
for the Gregorian Calendar.
The year 1700 was a leap year only in
countries still using the Julian Calendar. Denmark changed calendars on 19 Feb. 1700, so for
figuring all dates prior to 19 Feb. in the year
1700 add one day for leap year. On Table D for
the year 1700 you will notice two guide numbers
(11 and 21). For all dates prior to 19 Feb. 1700
use guide number 11, for all dates after 19 Feb.
1700 use guide number 21 and do not add a day
for leap year.
Example:
Problem 15 - Dam. Quinquagesima 1700
1. Check Table D for the year 1700 (11 * or
21) for guide number.
2. Check line 1 on Table E. (If the feast day
is before 19 Feb. use guide number 11 if after
19 Feb. use guide line number 21).
3. Quinquagesima on Table E is before 19
Feb. so use guide number 11.
4. Check Table E for guide number 11 under
Quinquagesima (Column 3, page 98).
5. Add one day for leap year (12 Feb.]
52
Problem 16 - Dam. 12 p Trinitatis 1700
1. Find the year 1700 on Table D as Trinitatis Sun. is after 19 Feb., use guide number 2J.
2. 12 P refers to 12 Sundays past Trinitatis.
3. Check Table E and find the Feast Day
Trinitatis (Column 8. page 99).
4. Follow column 8 down to line 21 (6 June)
5. Check Table F (Calendar of Weeks)
for 6 June.
6. 12 Sundays past Trinitatis 1700 (6 June) is
29 Aug. 1700.

Problem 22 - Dam. 2 p Epiphania 1647.
Epiphania is a fixed feast day and occurs on
6 Jan. It mayor may not occur on a Sunday.
The Tables for finding the movable feast days
will be used in figuring this problem as the date
to figure is 2 Sundays past Epiphania in the year
1647.
1. On chart D find the year 1647 and the
guide number (28).
2. Check Table E for Septuagesima (column

(FOR LEAP YEAR ADD ONE DAY TO THE
MONTHS OF JANUARY AND FEBRUAR~
Feast Day Calendar
for
Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland
and Protestant Germany
compiled by
Inger M. bukke and Finn A. Thomsen
INS T
Rue
T ION S
The Calendar is divided into three sections:
1. THE INDEX TC FIXED AND MOVABLE FEAST DAYS.
2. THE MOVABLE FEAST DAYS TABLES.
3. THE HOVABLE FEAST DAYS TABLES FOR SWEDEN AND FINLAND FOR THE YEARS 1700-1753.
1. The index consists of an alpharretical listing of fixed and movable feast days.
If the feast day is fixed, meaning that the date is the Same every year, the
day and month is given in the column "Date or #,'.
If the date is movable, meaning that the feast day Can vary up to 35 days,
depending upon the year, a number is listed in the column "Date or #". This
number refer to the first column (No.) in the second section (The movable feast
days tables).
2. The second section of the calendar consists of movable feast days with the day
and month of each feast day recorded in the column of the year.
The day and month of the desired movable feast day is recorded by the number
obtained in the index, in the column of the year.
(For the period 1700-1753, section three must be used for Sweden and Finland).
3. This section of the
calend~r is arranged the same as section two. It is
to be used for Sweden and Finland for the time period 1700-1753.
Note:
Whenever ~ (Sweden) is recorded after a feast day in the index, it should
also be applied for Finland. Den (Denmark) after a feast day will also apply
for Norway.
Section two, The Movable Feast Day Tnbles, begin with the year 1610. A few
records, using fesst days, may be in existance before that year. For the period
1530-1609 use the table of the year listed next to the year desired, as follows:
Example: 1541

GUIDE TO
GENEALOGICAL
RESEARCH
HOW TO DOCUMENT BIRTH, MARRIAGE AND DEATH
DATES IN SCANDINAVIA
Documentation and Record Evaluation
Generally, genealogical sources fall into three categories:
1. Personal knowledge, tradition, and family records including immediate contacts of
relatives and others.
2. Public or official records.
3. Printed sources, which are compiled from one or both of the first two categories.
Some have never considered research as anything more than copying from printed histories,
geneal ogies and other compil ed sources. The' use of ori gi na 1 records was rarely used or
considered. Sometimes original sources are not available or not easily available. However
for the Scandinavian countries, the offi ci al origi na1 records needed to verify vi ta 1
statistics have been microfilmed. These records, the Lutheran parish registers, have been
filmed from the time they began (about 1689) to the late 1800's or early 1900's. If you
need to document vital statistics subsequent to microfilm availability, you will generally
need to correspond with the parish minister of a particular parish concerned.
Classification of Record Sources
All record sources can be divided into two classifications:
A Primary Source:
A record or statement of an event or a circumstance made by an
eye-wltness or by someone closely connected with that event or circumstance, recorded or
stated verbally at or near the time of the event or circumstance.
A Secondary Source:
A record or statement of an event
non-eyewl tness or by someone not closely connected with
recorded or stated verbally either at or some time after the
at a time after the event, when the fallibility of memory is
or circumstance made by a
the event or circumstance,
event, or by an eye-witness
an important factor.
The difference between the two types of record sources depends on the time element (owing
to the possible weakness of memory) and the actual connection of the informant with the
event.
Pari sh regi sters are generally considered ,as a primary source. However, some items of
information they contain may be considered as secondary information.
Other Stages of Record Evaluation
Type of Record:
Original or transcribed, compiled and copied.
considers the errors that may possibly occur in copying.
The second stage
Type of Evidence - Direct or Circumstantial: Direct eveidence is any information that
points dlrectly to a problem which spontaneously brings about a conclusion.
Circumstantial evidence does not give a direct answer to a problem, but requires
inference or calculation to arrive at the conclusion.
Locality Target: County and Parish
In order to get into the Lutheran parish registers, the name of the parish and county 10
which it belongs must first be determined. Using what information has been gleaned or 10
1 i sted on the family group sheet( s l , try and determine these 1 oca11 ty targets through H,,,
use of appropriate gazetteers. (See separate handouts for each country)
The Script
The handwriting style used in the parish registers was the so-called German style. It hac!
its origin ir' -~ Gothic style of the middle ages and is referred to as the Gothic script.
Following is al Hample of the basic German style alphabet:

Records Generated ~ the illS O1urch
in the USA; Their Application to
Scandinavian Research
29 July 1974
Many records canpiled by the InS Church through the years contain information
vital to genealogical research. Large numbers of persons emigrated fran the
Scandinavian countries, many of than as Olurch members. Following are sane
of the records originating in the USA, with brief descriptions of the type
of infonmtion they contain and where they are housed.
1.

the tellilles and to the O1urch Records Archives' main records section.
They contain names of persons, dates and places of birth or christening,
date of death or burial, parentage, date of marriage and name of spouse,
relationships, usually dates of illS baptisn and endownerrt , These cards
are found at the Genealogical Society.
2.
0iL'Rrn RECDRDS AROITVES. The Main Records Section (pink labels) contains
over five million family group records. They give names of husband, wife,
and children; dates and places of birth (or christening), marriages, deaths,
and burials; parentage; spouse; l1lS date of baptism; tellille ordinance
data. This archive is located in the Genealogical Society.
The Patron's Section (yellow labels) contains family group records submitted for filing only, prepared mainly by illS O1urch members under the
priesthood's three-and-four generation family group record programs. The
information given is similar to that of the main records section.
3.
illS Qfu1lQI CENSUS REOCRDS. Censuses of all Church rrembers were taken in
1914, 1920, 1925, 1930, 1935, 1940, 1950, 1955, and 1960. They vary as
to content, but generally contain names of persons, sex, age, place of
birth, and miscellaneous items. On film, Church Historical Department
and at the Genealogical Society.
4.
DECEASrn MEMBERS FILE. This file contains the original copy of the Olurch
menbership certificate for deceased members whose deaths were reported.
This file begins in 1941 and is still operational. Church Historical
Department.
An obituary card Index has been kept by the Church Historical Department.
It is an index to obituaries appearing in the Salt Lake Tribune and the
Deseret News. The cards are found in the Church Historical Department
for the period 1850 to present, and on film at the GS for 1850 to 1963.
5.
EMIGRATION AND L\~IIGRATION. There are various records containing names
of persons who inmigrated to the USA as mEmbers of the Church. The records
of the Liverpool office, European Mission, contain names of emigrants,
ages, sex, etc., and are Indexed. The indexes appear to be only a partial
listing of persons and should not be considered canplete. These records
are found at the Olurch Historical Department and on film at the GS.

RECORD SOURCES
In 1662, Bishop Johannes Rudbeckius issued a stipulation for the CIRJRCH I\ECORDSa
clergy in his diocese regarding the keeping of church records on a CLERICAL SURVEY
parish level. In addition to the ministerial records to be kept were: RECORDS,
A RECORD OF CAT.ECHETICAL MEETINGS OR EXAMINA- CO.......nn.Tr'ONS,
TlONS (KATEKISMILANGDER)
lU1YUU,a
The clergy were asked to list the names of the parishioners noting CATECHEl1CAL
their ability to read, recite, explain, and understand the Lutheran MEETING USTS
catechisms. This record was usually set up farm by farm, family by'
family, showing, parents' names, sometimes ages, and household
members old enough to be examined. Sometimes only the names of
~ligible children were listed.
u
A RECORD OF COMMUNION (KOMMUNIONLANGDER)
These records show the date and names of the parishioners who
attended Holy Communion. They may be set up farm by farm,
showing the names of parents, sometimes ages, and household
members old enough to partake of Holy Communion. The record
format is very helpful. Sometimes they are merely a listing of those
who attended Holy Communion with a place of residence given.
These lists are not very helpful and are time consuming to use
properly.
The Civil Authorities were quick to realize how useful these lists
could be in the assessment and collection of taxes, and for a register
of names of those eligible for military service. From abouf1750, the
Swedish Central Bureau of Statistics required the ministers to make
up a statistical table concerning the persons in their parishes. This information was to be compiled from the above mentioned records.
These tables were to include vital statistical information regarding
the parishioners. Therefore, the Katikismiliingder and the Kommunionliingder from about 1750 gradually developed into a modified
Clerical Survey Record which became a kind of census list, combining a record of vital statistical information with a record of examination and communion. When complete, this record can actually be
compared to an ,annual census record.
The later Clerical Survey Records from about 1780 called for much CLERICAL SURVEY
more detailed information. They are set up farm by farm, family RECORDS
by family and generally contain:
1. Information pertaining to one specific year, but more often re- ~~FORH RS-

garding a 5-10 year period or more.
2. Complete name of each person for each household.
3. Dates of birth or age.
4. Usually, place of birth.
5. Occupation or status.
6. Relationship of individual to or with the household.
7. Sometimes, marriage datets).
8. Sometimes, date a person became a widow or widower.
9. Generally dates of death.
10. Name of village or farm where individual or family resided.
11. Where applicable, the place where a family or individual came
from or removed to and the date or year of such movement.
12. An indication if a child was born out of wedlock, and sometimes
the name of the father.
13. A grading on individual religious knowledge and ability.
14. Dates of household examinations.
15. Dates of individual attendance to Holy Communion.
16. Other personal information.
17. General remarks.
18. An index with page numbers of different villages and farms
contained within the particular survey record.
Theoretically, when these records are complete, it is possible to fol- .
low the movements of a person from birth to death.
The information contained in these records should be used only as a
guide and outline material. Insofar as possible, verification should be
made for each entry regarding births, marriages, deaths, incomings,
and removals, with the original entries as contained in the actual
Ministerial Records (parish registers). These records have been
microfilmed from the time they begin to about 1895.
CI.ERICAL SURVEY An extract of the Clerical Survey Records was made for the years
RECORD EXTRAcrs 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890. These are preserved at the Central Bureau
. D "·G UR of Statistics in Stockholm City. They have also been microfilmed. A

HUSFORHORSlANGDER) Where original Clerical Survey Records are extant, there is no need to
use these records.
CENSUS RECORDS- These records termed as Census Records by the Genealogical Society
TAX IlSfS are actually tax records pertaining to persons 15 to about 63 years of .
' .. " 0<!11' 'llU
age. Many persons were exempted, so that only about 50% of the
MANTJU..a"'J..oI'.!,GDER) population were actually listed. Only a small number of these were
actually listed by name. Usually the complete name (or just a given
name) is recorded for each head of a household under the name and
number of the farm or residence. To the right are various columns
which are filled in by a number. Columns generally designated are:
Man, Wife, Sons, Daughters, Daughters-in-law, Sons-in-law, Farmhands, Maid Servants, and Tenants.
These records are to be used in lieu of Clerical Survey Records when
the latter are not extant or are incomplete. They begin about 1630
and were kept until 1967. Early records gave sparce information,
whereas later ones may indicate complete dates of birth and names
of children. They have been microfilmed yearly to 1750, then about
every fifth year to include 1860. Microfilm call numbers are listed in
three registers: Reg. 948.6 X2m Vols. 1-3; Southern Sweden, Reg.
948.7 Vols. 1-2, Central Sweden; 948.8 Northern Sweden. The name
of the civil district (harad or tingslag) to which a parish belonged
needs to be determined.
In the earlier records, it was not the date of death which was important to record, but the actual church act of the burial. It was not until the mid 1700's that the date of death was recorded. Death records
vary greatly in the amount of information they contain depending
on the area in Sweden and period of time they comprise. Entries
range from the burial date of a "Svens svSrmor i Lister" (Sven's
mother-in-law of Lister) to a detailed obituary write up. Generally,
from the mid 1700's, information given is: status, occupation and
name of the deceased, place of residence, age (more frequently since
1800), date of death and burial, sometimes cause of death.

The ages at death are often inaccurate and may be off several years.
Usually, this information is given by an informant and is often not
verified by the parish minister.
These are chronological lists of persons who move in and out of a
parish, giving the date and place of removal or of arrival. Sometimes
a person is .identified by an a~e or d~te. of birth, but usually just the
name, marriage status, and residence IS given.

These lists are not preserved in every parish and often do not begin
until the early 1800's with frequent gaps of several years occurring
in the series. The records are referred to as Membership Records in
the cataloging descriptions used by the Genealogical Dept. If a record pertains only to arrivals or removals, then it is designated as such
in the cataloging.
LANGDER)
When a person moved from one parish to another, he was supposed
to obtain a certificate of removal from the parish minister to present
at the ministerial office of the new parish when moving in. These certificates often gave the date and place of birth (or age) of the person
or family members. Other information could include: the former
place of residence, length of time in present parish, parentage, place
of destination, marital status, Christian knowledge, personal habits
and conduct, date of last Communion, date and place of certificate,
and name of pastor signing the certificate. After the certificate was
presented to the minister of the new parish, often the intented
place of residence was noted on the certificate. An entry was made in
the Incoming Membership Lists and/or the Clerical Survey Records.
Then, these certificates were often destroyed, or later given back
to the parishioner if he moved again. These records are not very
well preserved and concern mainly the 1800's. They can be somewhat time consuming to search.
CERTIFICATFS OF
MEMBERS RECEIVED
(FLvrrllooTT''''GSB"UrVG)
The earliest preserved records on a parish level are the parish accounts, with a few dating back to the Middle Ages. Some parishes
have a "special accounts" series (specialrakenskaperl which contains lists of the money received from persons who paid for funeral
services, contributions for marriages performed, the rental of bridal
clothing, or contributions for christenings of children, and other
items. The most common of these is the lists of TESTAMENTSPEN·
GAR, a sum paid by the family to the church at the time of death
for services rendered to them and the deceased by the church.
These church accounts can supplement missing years in parish registers and often begin prior to the advent of the vital registers.
Many church accounts, however, only show monetary transactions
of income and expenditure giving no (or little) genealogical information whatsoever.
Parish registers comprising the last 100 years are kept in the parochial archives. Access to these records is allowed only if the information is older than 70 years. Access to information less than 70 years
old is accessible on a restricted basis. One must show relationship to
a person!s) and then sign an affidavit that any information found
will not be used for litigation or to harm or defame a person's character etc. To correspond with the parish archives, write in English

to Pastorsambetet, Nome of parish, Sweden. Records older than the
last 100 years are sent to the prop-er provincial archives with the exception of about 60 parishes in ~rebro and Kopparberg counties.
These parishes have received special permission to retain their records within the parochial office.
Comprehensively, Swedish church record archives would include records generated by the jurisdictions of a diocese (Domkapitelarkiv),
a district deanery (Kontraktprostarkivl, a deanery (Prostarkiv), a
parish (f~mlingsarkiv) and non-conformist congregations (de
frikyrkliga r&relsernas arkivl, etc. This class series will consider only
those portions of the parish church record archives which are most
beneficial in genealogical research.
The records generated by the clergy of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Sweden constitute one of the major sources for genealogical research. With the abolishment of Catholicism in 1527, the
Evangelical Lutheran Church became established as the official religion or state church of Sweden. Since then, the church has had the
responsibility of serving as recorder and keeper of the nations vital
statistics. A form of civil registration commenced in 1860 as Church
Record Extracts.
CHURCH RECORD For statistical purposes, an extract copy of all births, marriages and
EXTRACfS deaths from 1860-1949 have annually been made by the clergy and

supplement. They are not a complete extract of the original entries.
Christening dates, burial dates, names of witnesses and supplementary remarks were omitted.
Availability: At Statistiska Centralbyrims Arkiv, address: Karlavagen 100, S-115 26 Stockholm. Certified copies can be obtained free
of charge if the request is for one or two entries. The Genealogical
Dept. has microfilmed the records for 1860-1897. Refer to: Reg.
948.p V25um for the microfilm call numbers. Otherwise, they are
listed in the card catalog under Sweden, nome of county - Vital
Records.
PARISH REGISI'ERS In 1662, Bishop Johannes Rudbeckius of V~ster~s Diocese issued a
(MINISTERIALBOCKER) directive regulating the keeping of records by the ministry under his
jurisdiction. It was upon this plan that the official "church law" of
3 Sept 1686 governing the recording of parish events for all parishes
in Sweden was based. Even so, many parish records do not begin until 1689, and many others at later periods in the early and mid
1700's. The decree required that the following records be kept:
1. A record of all bridal couples together with the names of their
parents, places of residence and Christian knowledge.
2. The birth of all children, legitimate as well as illegitimate, with
the names of their parents and witnesses at the christening; the
children's names, birth and christening dates, and the place where
they were born.
3. The name of each person deceased, whether buried in the church
or on the churchyard, with a short resume of their residence, position, condition, Iife and age.
4. The names of those who move in or out of the parish, with a notation as to where they came from, their character, and where they are
going.
Early records often would give but meager information, whereas
later records often gave complete information as outlined above or
in various combinations. To determine the microfilm call numbers,
look in the Dictionary Card Catalog under Sweden, nome of coun-
ty, name of parish - Vital Records. There are also Registers for each
county listing the film numbers of each parish.
The earlier records were a record of christenings only. It was not until the middle of the 1700's that dates of birth were recorded. A
child was to be christened within eight days and nights after birth,
preferably in the parish church on the Sunday following the birth.
Frequently, a child was christened "at home" if it was not expected to live. If the child did live, then the home christening was
later "confirmed" in the church; thus there are sometimes two dates
of christening recorded.
The witnesses to the christening were often relatives. The person
who carried the child to the christening font was often, at least at
the first child's christening, the child's grandmother or a close female relative.
Usually, the information contained in these records includes the
names, status, residence of the bridal couple, and date of marriage.
Additional information can include the names of parents, ages, amount of the dowry (morgon~va), dates of the banns (Iysningar),
and names of the sponsors, especially the bride's sponsor (giftoman)
who is often her father, brother or closest living qualified male relative. The marriage usually took place in the parish where the bride
resided. If a marriage occurred by civil authority, notification was
still sent to the minister of the parish where the bride lived to be entered into the Lutheran parish registers.
Except for civil marriages, the intention of marriage or bann had to
be announced in church for three consecutive Sundays. If no one objected to the intended marriage, the couple was free to marry. Sometimes the date of marriage would not be recorded on the marriage
intention. If there is proof that the couple was married, then use the
. last date of banns as the marriage date. Sometimes, marriage dates
were kept in a separate book or a separate section.

These records represent a legal inventory and appraisal of the real PROBATE RECORDS
and/or personal property of the estate of a deceased person so that (BOUPPl'ECKNINGAR)
a proper distribution of property to heirs could be made. From the
1600's probate laws were in effect; however, since 1734, private inventories occurred more regularly when it became obligatory to have
them. Even so, many have been lost, especially in cases where assets
were so small as to be nontaxable. If a person's assets were meager,
a "certificate of destitution" would be sent to the court and no probate would be made. Therefore, existing probates only represent a
minority of the population. Some counties have better probates
than others, also representing a larger percent of the population.
RECORD CONTENT
The probate record often consists of three sections: 1. The preamble,
2. The estate inventory, 3. Distribution and division of property.
Sometimes item 3 is not included.
The Preamble
a. Date of inventory and names of appraisers.
b. Name of the deceased.
c. Place of residence of deceased and sometimes date of death.
d. Name of spouse, if living.
e. Names of all heirs and, in the case of married females, the narnelsl
of their spouse(s).
f. Age and places of residence of heirs.
g. Whether heirs are minors (omyndig) or of age (mundig). Note:
An unmarried female could be recorded as "omyndig" irregardless
of her age. If either a male or a female heir is physically or mentally
240
incapacitated, he/she could be designated as "omyndig".
h. Name of guardian(s) and relationship, if any, who is appointed to
oversee the inheritance of the minors.
If a will is involved, this is also quoted or referred to in the preamble.
Body of the probate
Contains the following:
a. An inventory of the estate of the deceased including real and personal property.
b. Value of the property.
c. Debts and credits.
d. Distribution of property-the amount received by each heir.
There are many exceptions 10 the above which varies with the period
of time, the area of the country, and the person taking the inventory.
AVAILABILITY AND JURISDICTIONS
On microfilm from earliest dates to about 1860,
District Court (Haradsrlitt)
For rural areas.: To determine in which district a parish belonged,
consult: Ref. 929.1485 J599c, Carl-Erik Johansson, Cradled In
Sweden, Logan, Utah: Everton Publishers Inc., 1977. There has not
been much change in these jurisdictions. Originals in custody of respective provincial archives (Iandsarkiv).
Magistrate Court (Rldhusritt)
For citiese Originals are in custody at either the respective city archive or the provincial archive.
Circuit Court of Appeals (Hovratt)
From 1737-1916 for nobility: Prior to 1737, originals are in custody
of the respective district or city court. From 1737-1916 it varies as:
Svea Hovrlltt - at the National Archives jRiksarkivet); Gota Hovrllttat the court offices in Jonkoping; SkJne och Blekinge Hovratt at the provincial archives at Lund.
Registers have been compiled indicating the microfilm call numbers.
They are set up alphabetically by county and then within each county the "hlirads" are listed alphabetically. Cities are not listed in the
registers and may be found in the card catalog.
Most districts and cities have name indexes to their probate records. They have been filmed and are found either: a) Included with
part one of the film series; b) In book form or on cards on separate
films; c) Found at the beginning of each film part or each year; d)
Filed in the card catalog under the name of the respective city or
district, or in the general section under Probate Records.
COURT~ORDS These records deal with criminal cases, complaints, suits, economical
deeds, mortgages, and land divisions etc. It is possible that
(OOMBOCKER) disputes,
the father's name of an illegitimate child may also be determined.
Unfortunately, these records. are difficult and time consuming to
use. Usually, there are no indexes or registers to proceedings and the
handwriting is often difficult to decipher. The Genealogical Dept.
has prepared registers for each county listing the holdings and microfilm call numbers. Records are grouped under several types of court
proceedings. Always check the inventory listing (Fgrteckning) for
more detailed lists. Two major record groups are: Minutes of Court
Proceedings (Dombbcker} and SmlJprotokoller. The Minutes can
contain much genealogical information, especially regarding disputes
over inheritance. As a supplement, a separate list of the fines levied
by the court (Sak5reslllngder) were kept. These can serve as a partial
register to court cases. In Sm?Jprotokoller, we find records of wills,
deeds, mortgages, marriage settlements, guardian accounts etc. Other
basic groups are: Minutes of Special Court Sessions (Urtima Tingsprotokolll: Survey Rec~rds of Estates (Extra Forrattningar); and
Land Division Records (Agodelningsrattsprotokoll).
Jurisdictions are the same as listed above for Probate Records. Some
additional jurisdictions are: Lagmansratt (Inferior Court of Appeals);
Klimnarsrlltt (small claims court of some larger cities); and Hallrlltten.
Since about 1650, a copy of the lower court proceedings has been
extracted and sent to the respective Hovratt. These copies (Renoverede Dombocker) are usually easier to read and are sometimes accompanied by an index.

~}jAX RECORDS IN SCANDINAVIA
.rS£:r~
by Borge A. Borgesen, Reference and Records B
Compared with major genealogical sources (parish register>, plus census and probate
records), the tax lists in Scandinovia, with few exceptions, Can be considered only as tertiory;
indeed, they are mare historica-cultural than actual genealagical records. For this reasan, they
also constitute 0 far better reflection of the social-economic develapment of the cauntries than
the major geneological records. Even defining the tax lists exactly is difficult because this
category of records can include, for instance, iorde~ger (a listing af users of pieces of land
owned by the Crown or by an estate).
Taxation generally is defined as compulsory payments to the government to 'suppart the
public services. However, history reveals (1) the purely totalitarian trait of exploiting the
lower classes by the Crown ond the nobility using 0 host of special levies and temporary taxes
and (2) a modern continuous tax system levied upon all citizens owning property and/or maintaining an income.
Knowing the basis of these special taxes, namely, the variaus circulars, decrees, and
ordinances issued by the governmental agency, will reveal which people are included in the
taxable bady at a specific time. The genealogist must also be aware of changes in the collection
districts to use the tax lists effectively.
The basic administrative division in Denmark at the beginning of the taxation was Lenet
(LBn), which was headed by a nobleman who paid to the king a yearly fee for his privilegetO
collect from the peasants. After abal ishing the system of Len the country was divided inta counties
headed by amtmand, with tax collection being the responsibTIity of amtsforvalteren--district
revenue officer>. Also, rytterdistrikterne (the cavolry districts) of Denmark were tax districts in
which regimentsskriveren was the collecting officer and record keeper.
The most continuous tax lists are the Swedish mantalslBngder (Reg. 948.6/X2m), which
can be used in mony instances in tracing people. Another important item is the Norwegian
Skattematrikkelen, 1647 (948.1/R4f) and other tax lists from this country in the 17th century.
Of special taxes, the Danish copulationspengeprotakoller (marriage fee licenses) from Copenhagen,
1720-1863 (048,119 -) are valuable geneological records. Agricultural tax lists may provide
a good ideo of the cui tural level of the people being studied because in many instances these
lists record the entire agricultural systems.
The two basic factors in using the tax lists are: the owner (user, tenant), and the
description of a piece of property given by its evoluation, either in money or provisions (in
Denmark, hartkorn), and its matrikulsnummer (Denmark or Norway).
Some lists contain informatian abaut the occupation of the owner (user), and in some
instances, a lisHng of the members of the household. However, information and content very
greatly among the Scandinavian countries even thaugh they share in the basic old Nordic culture.

The establishment of notional and provincial or regional archives in Scandinavia has
been one of the greotest aids to genealogi cal research. These arch ives contain the records
of many types of archives which have been centrally collected for preservation and storage
convenience, particularly records generated by civil and ecclesiastical authorities older
than the last 70 - 100 years. Because these records were gathered into central archival
locations, the microfilming program of the Church was much easier and more effective in
filming these precious records.
Two helpful publications regarding the archives of Scandinavia are:
a) Harald Jprgensen, Nordiske Arkiver, Issued by Arkivforeningen, K,6benhavn, (Odense:
Andelsbogtrykkeriet, 1968) GS call no. Ref. 948/A2j.
b) Nordisk Arkivnyt, Periodical (Copenhagen, Denmark: Rigsarkivet) (Available at the GS)

1E.AND RECORDS IN SCANDINAVIA

Land in the Scandinavian countries was owned by the crown, nobility, state church,
such institutions as hospitals or universities, men ofweolth, or a farmer. Except for the farmers,
the land owners did not operate the land themselves. They would lease the land to lease holders
who poid an annual lond rent fee to the owner. The land owned by the farmers and the nobility
can be considered in two subdivisions: land that could be obtained by right of inheritance, and
land that could be obtained by exchange or outright purchase.

Concerning Crown lands and land owned by the nobility, a son of a lease holder on
lands often would inherit the lease from his father. Using land records alone, when the
of the leose holder changed one! the names agree patronymically, the change often india father-son relationship. However, agreement of the names is not proof of such a relationand additional research is required to verify the possibility.
In Denmark during the seventeenth century, the practice developed of drawing up a deed
of tenure (faestebrev) when a peasant entered into a contract of tenancy for a copyhold farm
belonging to an estate. Often, a copyhold farm would pass to the tenant's son or some other
relative. Copyhold contract records usually indicate any relationships of the contracting
parties, plus the terms of the contract. If the terms were not adhered to, the farm was leased
to someone else.
Concerning privately owned land, a change in ownership almost invariably involved a
close family relationship. In Norway for example, alodial right of land ownership since 1687
has been secured after ownership has stayed within a family for twenty years. Court action is
required if this right is contested or if a person wants to redeem this right when the property has
been sold to someone outside the family. Right of ownership must be established. These court
proceedings are recorded in the Court Records (Tingboker). Information regarding several
generations often will be reveoled.
The Land Records called jordeb,6'ger constitute a register of land belonging to persons or
privately owned institutions, with supplementary information about the rent to be paid by the
individual tenant farmer. Often, the names of the farmers are recorded. The statements of
land ownership or lease are not always correct. Sometimes, the names from previous ralls would
merely be listed on the new rolls without checking to determine whether the person named was
living. These land records should be compared with any existing tax lists.
The Deed and Mortgage Records (Sko'de og Pantebo'ger) contain information relating to
documents involved in mortgage or the transfer of privately owned land. They contain names of
persons involved in land transactions, exact land descriptions, dates, and relationships. The
prior residence often can be obtained from these records.
The Norweg ian Bygdeboker are pri nted rura I histari es that often conta inform hi stori es
and ,~.e senealogies of the families that owned the fcrrns ,
Collectively, the land records described in the preceding paragraphs have been microfilmed from the earliest periods of the late 1500's to aoproximately 1860. Check the card
c':ltalog under the subject Land and Property for each country concerned. The land records will
usually be listed by county, [udlc ic l or civil district, or under the nome of the estcre or :'lSt:tuI!O.'
thct owned the land.
