Outreach in
Oklahoma
The Oklahoma City area, part of a stretch of land called
Tornado Alley, was ravaged by severe tornadoes last
May. Thanks to the support of our friends and partners,
Hand of Hope, Joyce Meyer Ministries World Missions was
able to join with Church of the Harvest, Victory Church,
Service International, Cooking for Christ, Gleaning
for the World, and The 99 to respond immediately to
the overwhelming devastation. In the first week alone,
thousands of volunteers joined relief efforts, cleaning
up debris, providing food and water, offering prayer,
encouragement and sharing the love of Christ with those
whose lives were turned upside down.
Today, the people of Oklahoma are still working to recover,
and we are committed to helping them as long as we
possibly can. Make sure to check in on Facebook and
at joycemeyer.org/disasterrelief for the most recent

These Treasures
of Mine
WHAT A CHILD’S ENCOUNTER
WITH THE TOOTH FAIRY REVEALS
ABOUT OUR GODLY INHERITANCE
BY PRISCILLA SHIRER
Priscilla Shirer
For weeks we’d been telling him stories
of a mysterious tooth fairy who would
visit him once he had something to put
under his pillow. So he dashed to bed
earlier than usual that night, meticulously placing the tooth in its position
beneath his head. Every few seconds,
he’d peer underneath the pillow to see
if anything miraculous was happening.
Finally, he dozed off and fell asleep.
My jaw dropped. When I was growing up, twenty-five cents
was the exchange rate for a lost tooth! I shot Jerry a halfperplexed, half-irritated look while simultaneously calculating
how broke we’d be if we continued giving such an extraordinary sum for every tooth our children lost each year. My husband knew what I was thinking. He’d expected my reaction
when he first tucked that gift underneath our son’s pillow in
the wee hours of the night. He grinned mischievously and
said, “Remember, Jackson’s fifth birthday last month—and all
those family members who came over to celebrate?”
It was 3 a.m. when the 6’3”, 250-pound
“tooth fairy” I sleep beside every night
made his way up the stairs and into
our son’s room. He gently exchanged
the tooth with a surprise and came
back to bed.
Yeah, so...
CYAN
The next morning, a glimmer of sun awakened Jackson
through the partially open drapes in his room. From downstairs we could hear the frantic thudding of an excited boy
who’d just discovered treasure. Then he scampered down
the stairs to show me his loot. In one hand he held gummy
bears, in the other, a crisp five-dollar bill.
Magenta
My son Jackson opened his palm to reveal the tiny white baby tooth he had
finally wiggled free from his mouth.
He’d been working on it for months.
Now he had the snaggle-toothed, fiveyear-old grin to prove it.

And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the
Good News that God saves you. And when you believed
in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the
Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. The Spirit is
God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he
promised and that he has purchased us to be his own
people. (Ephesians 1:13-14 NLT)
Leave it to Paul to remind us that the treasure we’ve been
looking for we’ve actually possessed all along—given by God’s
Spirit at the moment of our salvation. In these carefully
crafted verses, he opens the spiritual drawer in which God
has tucked the vast treasure of His love. Among His gifts:
• Redemption through His blood
• Forgiveness of sins
• The riches of grace
• Wisdom and insight
• The hope of His calling
• The riches of His glory
• The surpassing greatness of His power
“I pray for you constantly,” Paul wrote in Ephesians 1:16-17,
“asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might
grow in your knowledge of God.” (NLT)
The wealth of our inheritance is the foundation and framework
for each aspect of our daily lives. Yet we can have a tendency
to stow it in a spiritual nook, forgetting its whereabouts and
searching for our identities in relationships, activities, and endeavors that were never meant to satisfy our souls.
A new identity. Divine power. Everything you need you
already have. If only you’ll open the drawer, take it out and
live according to your true value—every single day for the
rest of your life.

O
ver the years, I’ve had many
people ask me for the key to
having a successful life. And my
answer is always the same—The Bible.
Jesus says in John 6:63 that His words
are Spirit and life. As we read and study
the Bible, God transforms who we are
and gives us the desire and ability to be
more like Him. Simply put, God’s Word is
Truth, and it’s the Truth that sets us free!
(See John 8:32.)
When it comes to studying the Bible, I
believe there’s a common misconception
that it’s too complicated or boring. But
it doesn’t have to be that way. God never
intended for us to feel like our time with
Him is a project or an obligation. In fact,
it’s just the opposite—He intends for time
in His Word to be simple, enjoyable and
full of life.
If you’re like me, it might help to check
your motives. I used to feel like I was
doing God a favor by reading the Bible.
If I read my three chapters a day or
spent enough time studying, I imagined
myself getting a checkmark in Heaven
for my progress.

How Studying the Bible Can Be
Simple, Fun and Fulfilling
Yellow
Magenta
CYAN

It’s important to remember that studying or reading for a longer duration has
nothing to do with how much God loves
us or approves of us. When God helped
me to finally understand that I was
reading the Bible for me and not for Him,
it brought tremendous freedom!
JOYCE MEYER
Where to Begin First, I recommend using a Bible translation that you
can understand. Many people use The
New King James Version and the New
International Version because they are
simple and straightforward. Personally,
I use the Amplified Bible because it takes
the original Greek and Hebrew text and
expounds on it in a way that I can better
understand. However, the key is using
something that works for you.
Second, try not to get caught up in how
much time you are spending. I think
some good advice is to just start somewhere. So many people never read or
study the Word because they think they

“DON’T ALLOW YOURSELF TO DO NOTHING
SIMPLY BECAUSE YOU CAN’T DO A LOT. START
SMALL AND GO FROM THERE.”
Sometimes we are defeated because
we try to begin where we should
be finishing, or we try to do what
someone else is doing. The truth is
that God will meet you where you
are right now. As you take a step of
faith, He will give you the grace and
strength you need!
A SPIRITUAL PRESCRIPTION
I’ve also found it helpful to read and
study the Bible with a specific need
in mind. For instance, if I’m having
a hard time forgiving someone and
letting go of anger, then I will look
up all of the scriptures I can find on
those subjects and allow God’s Word
to help me walk through it.
Today, Bible software packages and
online search tools have made studying the Bible easier than ever. We can
instantly find scriptures on any topic.
In this case, I could individually enter
in the words “anger” and “forgiveness”
to find any related verses.
Some of this might sound funny,
but the results were life-changing!
Studying these scriptures slowly
began changing me and my perception of God. Little by little, I gained a
revelation concerning His love that
continues to impact my relationship
with Him.
Today, I can truly say that I am addicted to God’s Word—it has become
a necessity that I require every day.
Perhaps you are at a point in your life
where you are ready to begin studying
the Bible. If so, I want to encourage
you to take a moment right now and
ask God to help you get started.

Remember, don’t allow yourself to
do nothing simply because you can’t
do a lot. If you want to form a habit
of reading and studying God’s Word,
then start small and go from there.
For instance, several years ago I
began seeking God for a greater
understanding of His love. For one
entire year, I read and meditated
on scriptures about love. I even
wrote them all down on paper, one
by one. To this day, I can remember
saying, “God loves me,” over and
over as I drove down the road in my
car. Many mornings I would look at
myself in the mirror and declare the
same thing.
How to Study
the Bible
CYAN
Begin by taking even just fifteen
minutes a day. If you’re reading the
Bible for the first time, I encourage
you to read the Gospel of John or
spend some time reading through the
Book of Psalms. These books are easy
to read and full of God’s messages of
love and encouragement.
As we read scriptures over and over
and allow them to really sink into our
hearts, they have the power to change
us from the inside out and bring
supernatural healing in our lives.
Proverbs 4:22 says that God’s Word
literally brings life and health to our
entire being!

Romans 8:5 teaches us that if we set our minds
on the things of the flesh, we will walk in the flesh;
but if we set our minds on the things of the Spirit,
we will walk in the Spirit. Let me put it another
way: If we think fleshly thoughts, wrong thoughts,
negative thoughts—we cannot walk in the Spirit.
Renewed, God-like thinking is a vital necessity to a

IT’S VITALLY IMPORTANT

A Vital Necessity For the
believer, right thinking is a vital necessity. A vital necessity is something

The Lord impressed this truth on me

I was having a terrible time disciplining myself to do these things until

OUR SPIRITUAL WEAPONS Because our battle with
the enemy begins in our thoughts, God has given us powerful
spiritual weapons with which we can protect ourselves. Our most
powerful weapon is His Word. We can pray the Word, speak the
Word, sing the Word and study the Word. Even Jesus used the
weapon of the Word in the wilderness to defeat the devil (See
Luke 4:1-3). Each time the devil lied to Him, Jesus responded with,
“It is written...” and quoted him the Word.
Win the
battle in
your mind
Two other spiritual weapons available to us are prayer and praise.
Prayer enables us to draw close to God and be completely open
with Him. Prayer is fellowship, friendship, and an opportunity
to express gratitude for all He is and does. If you want to have an
effective prayer life, develop a good personal relationship with the
Father. Know that He loves you, that He is full of mercy and grace.
Get to know His Son Jesus, who loves you so much He died for you.
He is with you all the time. Let Him help you. And when you praise
Him, praise Him from your heart.
think in our hearts is what we will become. I frequently say, “Where
the mind goes, the man follows.” The Bible also says a tree is known
by its fruit. The same is true in our lives. Thoughts bear fruit. Think
good thoughts, and the fruit in your life will be good. Think bad
thoughts, and the fruit in your life will be bad.
Whatever the condition of your life right now, I want to encourage
you to keep moving forward in your relationship with God. The key
is to never give up! As you spend time with Him in prayer and reading the Word, you will renew your mind and experience more of the
victorious life we can have in Christ. He is working on you; at least,
He is if you have invited Him to influence your thoughts. Just keep
cooperating with Him—and don’t give up!

BLACK
According to Zechariah 4:6, we accomplish what we need to do not
by might, nor by power, but by [His] Spirit (AMP). So the best way
we can be empowered is by asking God for a lot of help—and asking
often. You can’t overcome your situation by determination alone.
You need to be determined, but determined in the Holy Spirit, not in
the effort of your own flesh. The Holy Spirit is your Helper—seek His
help. Lean on Him—not on your own strength and understanding.

MADE PERSONAL
Excerpted from The Battlefield of the Mind Action Plan.
The enemy relentlessly seeks to build strongholds in our minds—
false beliefs masquerading as truth. His assaults start early with the
critical words of a parent, a teacher, or even other children. We often
internalize other people’s assessments, which can follow us through
life influencing our behavior and shaping the way we see ourselves,
other people—and even how we see God.
Do you struggle with a negative self-image or other self-limiting beliefs? If so, what
are they and what early or past experiences may have planted them in your mind?
Sometimes we think obsessively about everything from injustices at work to slights
from friends and family members. What particular negative thoughts have created
obstacles in your life and relationships?
How do such thoughts and attitudes harm your relationship with God?
Your thoughts
become your words
and attitudes. Where
the mind goes, the
man follows.

God’s Word states that you do not have to be defined by things you’ve done in the
past—or things that may have been done to you. You are a new creation through
Christ’s sacrifice and the Holy Spirit living inside you. But inner transformation is a
process. What does God need from you to complete that process?

be transformed by the

you will be able to test and

Thanks to your support, we were able to provide
so much more than a day of fun for these families.
People without insurance were able to see doctors
and dentists for the first time in a very long time.
Children were able to receive a new pair of glasses
for free. People encountered the love of Christ and
many prayed with volunteers to accept Him into
their lives—some were even baptized at the event.
Everyone enjoyed a hot meal and every family
went home with a large bag of groceries.

This past March Hand of Hope, Joyce
Meyer Ministries World Missions partnered with Trinity Church in Miami
Gardens, Florida, to provide a fun-filled
day complete with entertainment,
medical and dental care, food and more.
In an area where the income per capita
is just below $17,000 a year, a simple
bag of food, a free health screening,
dental cleaning and haircut, plus a safe,
family-friendly day of fun can mean all
the difference.
When the big day arrived and the event began,
the weather hadn’t changed much. But that
didn’t stop the 500 volunteers or the 2,500
attendees from making this day one they would
never forget. As thousands enjoyed the event,
the sun slowly began to peek from behind the
clouds and it turned into a bright sunny day.

joy from our lives. And if we’re too
religious, we won’t be able to be led by
the Holy Spirit and enjoy an intimate
relationship with Him.
In the world we live in today, it’s easy
to get to this point. And I’ve discovered that many times, we feel this
way because we’re not free to be who
God created us to be and do what He’s
calling us to do.
In my relationship
with God, I’ve
learned that if I follow
a “formula” for how
I spend my time with
Him, then I’m just
accomplishing a
checklist of things
I feel obligated to do
to please Him.
Traditions are a common part of our
lives. They can be good, and not all
traditions are wrong, but sometimes
they can take the joy out of life.
Traditions can be defined as manmade
rituals or ceremonies or a way of doing
a certain thing; they are done repeatedly over a long period of time and
are handed down from generation to
generation. The problem occurs when
we feel obligated to do them to be right
with God or other people.
In Matthew 15:6 (AMP), Jesus said to
the Pharisees, “For the sake of your
traditions (the rules handed down by
your forefathers), you have set aside
the Word of God [depriving it of force
and authority and making it of no
effect].” Now, I think it’s interesting to
note here that while God gave Moses
the 10 Commandments, by this time,
religious people had taken those 10
and turned them into 2,000 rules and
regulations. No wonder we need to
hear about grace!
What we need to understand is that
when traditions become laws, rules,
obligations and expectations others
put on us that we don’t want to fulfill,
they lose real meaning and steal the
free to be led by the Holy Spirit—in
every part of our lives. Because if we’re
not led by the Holy Spirit, we’ll get
sucked into what I call the “system” of
doing what we think we are supposed
to do based on people’s expectations
and requirements. In the process,
we won’t do what God has put in our
hearts to do.
In the world, life is complicated. But I
want to encourage you to seek the Lord
with all of your heart, and do what He’s
calling you to do. Enjoy your relationship with Him and discover more
about who you are in Christ. You will
have peace and joy as you are simply
led by the Holy Spirit.
In my relationship with God, I’ve
learned that if I follow a “formula” for
how I spend my time with Him, then
I’m just accomplishing a checklist of
things I feel obligated to do to please
Him. This makes my spiritual life
more about doing what I need to do
to fulfi ll an obligation than something meaningful.
I remember a time when God spoke
to my heart and told me not to do
anything for Him out of obligation.
See, whatever we do during our daily
time with God, it needs to mean
something to us; otherwise we are
being legalistic, and there is no life in
religious traditions that we do based
on obligation or what others expect.

BY JON ESSEN
Who doesn’t enjoy eating? I love to eat. I love to cook.
I love to serve food to my family and friends as often as I can.
Years ago I felt prompted by the Lord to enhance the way I express
hospitality toward others, and that by doing so, it would open doors
to minister the Gospel and influence lives.
Now years later I’ve seen incredible ministry moments come to pass in
my life many times over food. On a recent trip with Hand of Hope, Joyce
Meyer Ministries World Missions, I was overwhelmingly blessed to see
how food was transforming lives on a much larger scale.

A Vast Land With Simple Needs
We traveled to The Republic of
Indonesia, a single country comprised
of multiple islands over a large area.
If you were to measure from the far
western edge, to the far eastern edge
of all the islands, it would be wider
than the United States of America.
Our goal was to see Hand of Hope’s
impact in Indonesia through their
ongoing feeding programs. While
the ministry currently operates 13
different centers that feed over 2,000
children throughout all of Indonesia,
we specifically targeted centers in
Bali, found on the eastern edge of the
country, as well as the capital city of
Jakarta.
I spent my time in Bali at two different feeding center locations, where I
observed more than 150 children who
are fed there each week—one center in
a dumpsite community called Suwong
and the other in a nearby area called
Pulau Roti.
Hand of Hope began partnering in both
locations over five years ago, with a
local pastor named Eko Johnny, who
witnessed how poverty was causing
so many children to lack practical,
everyday basics—needs as simple as a
healthy, life-sustaining meal.
BLACK
This was the case for Ayu, a young
girl I met who years earlier had been
found by Pastor Eko and his wife, Adel,
on the street “taking and eating dog
food just to survive.”
Magenta
CYAN
They began feeding Ayu and many
others like her as often as they could.
However, at that time they didn’t have
the necessary support to consistently
meet the overwhelming need. Today,
through the help of Hand of Hope, that
is a different story.
EEL 0813 22-25.indd 23
AUGUST 2013 // PAGE 23 // DOM

Pastor Eko’s dream is “to see the
children grow up and experience
a better life,” and he believes these
regions that have been impoverished
for years can begin to see “long-term
change and development.”

Life Transformation Is
Underway In each of the feeding
centers: Suwong, Pulau Roti and
Pondok Kasih, there is now a steady
and continuous supply of food, made
possible because of the support of the
friends and partners of Joyce Meyer
Ministries.
It demonstrated again, how something
as simple as “daily bread” has a
wonderful purpose. For each child
who receives a meal, it showed me that
another smile is created —
 another life
is saved.
But it doesn’t stop there. Providing
food and care opens the door for
something even greater — the ability
to share the Gospel with the children
and their families.
Pulau Roti Feeding Center, Bali
Miles Away The Need Is The
Same In Jakarta, the nation’s capital
city that has a population of over
28 million people, another Hand of
Hope feeding center is transforming
children and families on a daily basis.
BLACK
Pondok Kasih, translated House of
Love, located over 750 miles west of
the Bali feeding centers, currently
feeds more than 130 children, most
of whom are from remote areas in
Indonesia.
Tommy Mailangkay, who runs the
House of Love, tells the story of how
prior to receiving ongoing support
from Hand of Hope, there was a time
when they had nothing to buy food
with, and as the children described
it, they “fasted” for three days, simply
because there was nothing to eat.
CYAN
Pastor Eko Johnny
Ayu
Yellow
Magenta
Mr. Mailangkay told me he is blessed by
the transformation that is happening
today in the lives of the children. “They
are better now than they used to be. And
I can say that their health and achievement is not inferior, compared to that of
other children living in the city.”
In each feeding location, workers lead
the children in singing joyful worship
songs about Jesus, share Bible stories,
and pray with the children for needs
in their lives.
David Meyer, CEO of Hand of Hope,
sums it up best: “It’s vital to establish
a groundwork of care and love in the
lives of the people of Indonesia. As we
do this, beyond just giving care and
providing hope, we gain their trust,
and they come to us and ask us why
we would do this. That is an open
door for us to tell them about Jesus.”
My experiences in Indonesia reinforced the reality to me that food is
more than just a meal. It’s a key that
unlocks a door to bringing influence
in the hearts of those with extreme
needs.
Every time we feed another child, we
are given access into their lives to
share the greatest message they will
ever hear.
So in knowing this, let’s pray the
same prayer Jesus did:“Give us this
day our daily bread.”
Jon Essen traveled to Indonesia with
Joyce Meyer Ministries to report on Hand
of Hope outreaches there.

There’s No

DISCOVERING THE TRUTH
ABOUT THE FIRST AMENDMENT
by DAVE MEYER
Let’s begin by looking at what the First
Amendment actually says: “Congress
shall make no laws respecting an
establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”
BLACK
Former Chief Justice William Rehnquist called
the expression “separation of church and state”
a “misleading metaphor.” So if this term is not in
the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution, then where did it come from?
CYAN
The Heart of the Issue — It all began in 1801
when President Thomas Jefferson received a letter from the Baptist Association of Danbury, Connecticut. This group was strongly in favor of the
First Amendment, however they were opposed
to the idea that the government could one day
attempt to regulate religious expression.
Magenta
At the heart of the issue are the now
famous words, “separation of church
and state.” Through continuous usage
over recent decades, the “separation”
language has become so commonplace that many Americans believe it
to be a constitutional phrase found in
the First Amendment. But it is not.
Contrary to what many believe, the phrase “separation of church and state” never even appears
in the First Amendment. However, with these
five words as the standard, the courts have now
declared many American customs and traditions
unconstitutional.
In short, they were afraid the language in the
amendment wasn’t strong enough.
Specifically, there was concern about the establishment of a national church, such as the Church
of England. Along with several other Christian

In the last fifty years, there
have been few issues of law more
hotly contested or misunderstood than
the First Amendment. What began as a
safeguard for religious freedom is now
being used to remove the Christian
faith from the public arena. Forbidding
prayer at a school assembly or preventing crosses from being displayed
at a roadside memorial are just a
couple examples.

groups, the Baptists wanted to secure
their freedom and assure the government could not interfere with the religious activities of its citizens or show
partiality to any one denomination.
A Letter from the President — On
January 1, 1802, Jefferson wrote a reassuring reply to the Danbury Baptists.
In it, he said:

…Believing with you that religion is a
matter which lies solely between man
and his God; that he owes account to
none other for his faith or his worship…
I contemplate with solemn reverence
that the act of the whole American
people which declared that their legislature should “make no law respecting
an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,” thus
building a wall of separation between
Church and State…I shall see with sincere satisfaction the progress of those
sentiments which tend to restore to
man all his natural rights…. 1
Now, the use of the term “natural
rights” here is extremely important.
While this term doesn’t mean much to
us now, it spoke volumes to the people
in that day.
“Natural rights” was understood to
include everything God has promised
within His Holy Scriptures. Therefore,
the Danbury Baptists were assured
by Jefferson that freedom of religion
was an inalienable God-given right and
above federal jurisdiction.
story of God’s influence in the lives and decisions
of our Founding Fathers. But Thomas Jefferson’s
understanding of the Source for America’s inalienable rights was absolute. In fact, He later wrote:
And can the liberties of a nation be thought
secure if we have lost the only firm basis, a
conviction in the minds of the people that these
liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to
be violated but with His wrath?2
Jefferson believed that God was the Author and
Source of our rights—not the government. His desire was for our government not to interfere with
those rights. The “wall” in the Danbury letter was
not to restrict religious displays in public. Instead,
it was to minimize the power of the government
to prohibit or interfere with religious expression.
Some now want us to believe that Jefferson
meant something different and they attempt to
distort his original intent. And if they are
left unchallenged, our nation will one day be
unrecognizable.
That is why learning America’s true heritage is so
extremely vital. It is the foundation that allows
us to take action and counter those who want to

It’s not too late. There are those who want to forget
what really happened. But with God’s help, we can
rediscover the genuine history of our nation before
it simply becomes another distant memory.

On December 24, 1998, we were married. Since then, God
has used us and taken us to places we would have never
thought possible. I have listened to over 12,000 hours of
your teachings going on 15 years now and I won’t quit either.

From that day on I would pull over at
a rest stop and take notes while you
were teaching. Then I would look up in
my Bible to make sure you were teaching the truth of God’s Word. You were,
and I started to grow and change.
My wife, Linda, and I began dating around that time. I
shared my notes and your teachings with her and she
began to grow in the Lord. Then when we heard you were
coming to Nashville, we decided to go together and that
decision changed our lives.

journey with God. He has a plan for each of us!

FOUR PRINCIPLES FOR

MY HUSBAND, Dave, has always been

it’s because he is a very patient man.

Dave lives by the philosophy that you
should never put on credit what you
can’t pay for today. I’ll admit there
were times I wasn’t exactly thrilled
about that, but over the years, it has
been a good thing for both our marriage and our ministry.

Now I want to share with you a few
more principles that have helped us stay
financially stable. They are simple but
very powerful when put into practice.
Number One: Work. You’ve got to do a
good day’s work for a good day’s pay.
Titus 2:9 says, [Tell] bond servants to
be submissive to their masters…. In
other words, tell employees to be submissive to their bosses.
Do a good job. Don’t have a bad attitude. Don’t take little things home with
you like pens and paper clips and act like it doesn’t matter.
God wants to bless you, but you have to work and you have
to work honestly.
Number Two: Give. Give even when it doesn’t feel good.
The Bible specifically tells us to give to the poor.
Deuteronomy 15:7-10 says, If there is among you a poor
man…you shall give to him freely without begrudging it;
because of this the Lord will bless you in all your work and
in all you undertake.
Number Three: Save. Just as we set aside our tithe, we are
to set aside money for savings. I don’t care if you have to start
with fifty cents a week. Start small and believe God for more.
The Bible says that Joseph stored up enough grain during
times of plenty to last through seven years of famine. Because of his careful planning, he was able to take care of his
family and a lot of other people as well.
Number Four: Spend responsibly. We are not to hoard our
blessings. If you already have plenty in your storehouse,
don’t be afraid to do something with it.
Dave and I believe that when you apply these principles, the
power of what you’re doing will expand your borders.

The Pursuit of Happiness
My Personal Journey to Finding True Fulfillment
THE U.S.

by JEREMY PICKENS
That’s when the merry-go-round got
started. Dad was a stock broker, so I
decided to carry on his legacy. And
better yet, I was good at it. Before I
knew it, I was making a lot of money
and climbing the ladder. My goals to be
powerful and wealthy were more than
just within reach…they were coming
to pass.
Magenta
Yellow
For me, the road to fulfillment has been a life-long
pursuit... As a boy, I suffered
through my parents’ divorce and never
really got to know my father until I
was a young man. But our relationship wouldn’t last long. While I was
attending college, my dad took his own
life and left me feeling sad and jaded
about the future.
The question was, Why wasn’t I happy? Deep down,
I felt like there was a greater purpose…but what
was it? I switched jobs, but that wasn’t the answer.
I finally quit my job as a major bank officer and
enrolled in medical school. Surely, I thought, This
will satisfy my passion to help others.
It didn’t.
After a year of medical school, I felt a greater emptiness than ever. This time, I didn’t turn to another
job or occupation—I turned to alcohol and drugs.
The next two years were my attempt to escape all
of the emptiness inside.
Each day I was drunk by 3 p.m. Along with loneliness and depression, my substance abuse was
destroying the wonderful life God had planned for
me. Bad turned into worse, and I was eventually
evicted from my apartment and forced to move
back in with my mom.

My goals to be powerful and wealthy were more than
just within reach—they were coming to pass. The question
was, Why wasn’t I happy?
Then, in 2011, I came across Joyce Meyer’s website and noticed there was a position open for a
food pantry coordinator at the St. Louis Dream
Center, their urban church and outreach center
in Missouri. It was similar to work I had done
while volunteering at a church in Nashville, Tennessee. So I applied.
Three weeks later, a representative from the ministry called me for an interview. Things just clicked
from the beginning. We talked at length, and a
few days later, they offered me the position. I accepted…and for the first time in my life, I was truly
excited about a new job. Even better, my wife also
accepted a position at Joyce Meyer Ministries, and
we would be moving to St. Louis together.
A Perfect Fit My first day at the Dream Center
was “trial by fire,” and I loved it—I had prayed for
a position that would challenge me. That day we
managed to distribute three semi-truck loads of
food to more than 1,200 families! It was exhilarating, and that experience confirmed that I was in
the right place.
As the weeks went by, I began taking tremendous
satisfaction in organizing food outreaches. God
was using my administrative gifts in a whole new
way, and the results were something I could see
for myself—changed lives.
For years I had longed to satisfy my
passion for helping others. Now, by
reaching out to others through this
ministry, I have found true fulfillment.
No amount of money or prestige could
ever fill the emptiness. But God is merciful. Even at my lowest point, He never
gave up on His good plan for my life.
Today, God has expanded my sphere of
influence and I currently oversee the
entire food ministry at the St. Louis
Dream Center. This includes the soup
kitchen, the food pantry, the afterschool feeding program—everything.
We are able to feed thousands of
people every single week. It’s an honor,
a privilege, and a tremendous responsibility.
Best of all, I am finally where I belong.
It is here, serving others, that I discovered God’s true purpose for my life.
Jeremy Pickens oversees the food ministries and other related outreaches for the
St. Louis Dream Center.

But it was the same old story—I wasn’t fulfilled.
Somehow, God has seamlessly woven
together all of my experiences as a

jobs that forced me to be an extravert—
and is using them to help me talk with
people about Christ.

Rekindling the Fire That was the worst experience of my life. However, in the middle of my
pain, God began to rekindle my relationship with
Him. Over time, He delivered me from substance
abuse and helped me get back on solid ground.
Being on the front lines of ministry—
“in the trenches”—was new to me, and
I thrived on the interaction. Simply
greeting the people…or sitting down
with them and sharing God’s love has
brought tremendous meaning to my life.

IN 2012, our volunteer medical and dental
missions teams traveled to 11 nations providing
free care to some of the poorest people in the
world. In what could only be orchestrated by
God Himself, it seemed our teams were always
in exactly the right place at the right time. So
many people came for care, they simply wouldn’t
have if you weren’t providing these opportunities. And for many, that care was the difference
between life and death. These are just a few…
CURUA, BRAZIL — A 2-year-old boy arrived at
our clinic in severe respiratory distress. He was
unconscious, pale and struggling to breathe.
The team was able to care for him all day by
administering life-saving medication. By the
end of the day he was breathing freely and back
to his normal self.
PURSAT, CAMBODIA — A 24-year-old young
woman came to our dental clinic with a
severely infected abscess. The abscess had
grown into a cyst and over the past year
deteriorated into a hole on the inside of
her pallet. Our dentist was able to drain the
infection and provide antibiotics that literally
saved her life.
COFFEE BAY, SOUTH AFRICA — A young man
arrived at our clinic with a massive infection
in his body. He needed immediate care and
attention, so our volunteers gave him an
antibiotic injection and transferred him to
a nearby hospital. Before the drive to the
hospital, he prayed with our volunteers and
gave his heart to the Lord!
Thank you so much for making these and so
many other moments possible. If you are a
medical/dental professional, we would love for
you to join us on an upcoming outreach and
experience more moments like these firsthand!
