FWCS Offers One-of-a-Kind Learning Opportunities
• School Choice - FWCS offers students the option
to attend any of the 50 schools in the district,
based on space availability and racial balance.
• Pre-Kindergarten Programs - FWCS offers two
Early Childhood Centers, Bunche and Whitney
Young, as well as pre-kindergarten programs in 19
elementary schools.
• District-Wide Full-Day Kindergarten at No Cost
- FWCS was the first school district in the area
to offer district-wide full-day kindergarten to all
students at no additional cost to parents.
• Seven Magnet Schools - FWCS offers a wide
variety of quality programs for all students,
including seven magnet schools: two Montessori
schools and five with focuses on math and
science, fine arts and communications.
• High School Programs of Study - FWCS
offers specialized Programs of Study at each of
its five high schools, including the prestigious
International Baccalaureate (IB) program at South
Side, the New Tech Academy as well as the
Business program at Wayne, Project Lead the
Way Engineering at Northrop, Project Lead the
Way Biomedical Sciences at Snider and Global
Studies/World Languages at North Side.
• Accredited Montessori Schools - FWCS has
the first public school in the nation, Bunche Early
Childhood Center, to receive accreditation from
the American Montessori Society. Bunche was
re-accredited in 2011. FWCS also has the state’s
only public 1-8 Montessori program, Towles
Intermediate School.
• Career Education Programs - FWCS’ Anthis
Career Center provides extensive Career
Education Programs to 22 high schools
in Northeast Indiana, including dual-credit
opportunities with local colleges and national,
state and local certifications in most programs.
Examples of career areas include Allied Health,
Aviation, Engineering Technology, Information
Technology Academy and Public Safety.
• State and Nationally Recognized Programs
- Many FWCS schools have received state or
national recognition for their programs. Among
them: Franke Park Elementary is a NASA
Explorer School – the first in Indiana – and Lindley
Elementary is part of the International Spanish
Academies Program.
• High Ability Programs – FWCS offers
personalized enrichment programs for high ability
students.
• Special Education – FWCS offers a full range
of academic programs and support services to
special needs students at school sites throughout
the district.
• Customized Instruction – For every student,
FWCS offers high quality instruction that is tailored
to each child’s individual needs.
FWCS is Achieving Success
• Academic Growth – FWCS made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) under the Federal No Child Left Behind
Act, for the second consecutive year. Academic gains also earned FWCS Exemplary status under Indiana’s
accountability law, Public Law 221.
• College Success - FWCS graduates go on to schools such as Harvard, University of Pennsylvania,
University of Michigan, DePauw University and University of Southern California.
• Financial Assistance – Working with our outstanding guidance counselors, most students are able to
obtain financial assistance to attend college, including full scholarships to top universities.
• National Awards – FWCS students have been recognized for winning national awards in areas including
Journalism, Speech, Art, Writing and Web Design.
• Graduation Rate Growth - FWCS’ graduation rates have improved each year and exceed the state
average.
