176 RETREAT CENTERS • HOUSE OF PRAYER FOR PRIESTS
Cardinal Manning House of Prayer for Priests
T
he Cardinal Timothy Manning House of Prayer for Priests
opened in 1975 under the guidance and inspiration of Cardinal
Timothy Manning and Jesuit Father John McAnulty. It was their
vision that there be a special place exclusively for priests to
nourish their spiritual lives and to pray for the people whom
they serve.
The Immaculate Heart Sisters generously loaned a portion of
their property, at the site of their motherhouse, to help facilitate this dream.
Located in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles, the Cardinal Timothy
Manning House of Prayer for Priests provides a spiritual oasis for
priests with accommodations surrounded by lush greenery.
In 1995, Cardinal Roger Mahony expanded and rededicated
the House of Prayer to serve the large number of priests using
the facility. In honor of his predecessor, Cardinal Mahony officially renamed the new facility the Cardinal Timothy Manning
House of Prayer for Priests.
Today, the House of Prayer offers retreats (individually directed, preached and private), spiritual direction, days of recollection, daily Sacrament of Penance, as well as providing a
place for priests’ support groups to meet. The facility consists
of three primary buildings: McAnulty Hall, the original house;
Bethany, which houses the guest units; and Emmaus, the main
building.
Father Jack Stoeger currently serves as Director, and Jesuit
Father Christopher Cartwright is the Associate Director. The
following Spiritual Directors serve one day a week: Father Jim
Clarke, Jesuit Father Joseph Spieler, Missionary of the Holy
Spirit Father Eugenio Cardenas, and Benedictine Father Joseph
Brennan.
For nearly 20 years the Order of St. Gregory the Great has
committed the Cardinal Timothy Manning House of Prayer for
Priests as its apostolate. Their gracious involvement and generosity in supporting the House of Prayer’s mission of reflection,
renewal and direction continues to be an integral part of our
ministry.

Retreat Centers
It is healthy to get away from everyday
life, rest and renew your faith. A retreat
can provide seclusion and solitude to
allow time for prayer, reflection, meditation and study. Today in the U.S. there
are countless retreat centers offering a
wide variety of programs – all with the
general purpose of the spiritual growth
of the individual.

In the early church, the desert
monks and fathers spent long
periods of prayer and fasting in
remote areas. Pilgrimages in the
middle ages stressed veneration
of holy places and sacrifice. By
the 16th century, St. Ignatius
of Loyola wrote his Spiritual
Exercises after spending a year
in retreat, and that formula is
still used extensively today. He
is recognized as the patron of
retreats.
