In our Christian liturgical calendar we celebrate seven Sundays of Easter after the Resurrection of Jesus. These 50 days of celebration lead to our next holiday, Pentecost, which is on
May 15. During Easter, however, we get to celebrate the forgiveness of our sins and the defeat of death. It is a season of joy and remembrance of what Jesus did for us in His death and resurrection. What good
news! So, what then? Everybody be happy and joyful, right? Isn’t that what good Christians are like? For seven whole
weeks!? Right!?
Well… kind of. Despite the good news—and it is the best news—life still goes on for us. It is hard to be completely
happy and joyful for 50 straight days when the trials and tribulations of life continue. There’s sickness, pain, tests, bullies,
disappointments… for goodness sakes, taxes are almost due! Yikes! How can we be happy and joyful when the world
seems to be against us? And aren’t Christians supposed to be smiley and happy and never worry about life?
Well… kind of. I think the key is that the world may be against us, but GOD IS FOR US. The bad things happen, and
they will affect us greatly from time to time, especially when we’re dealing with death. However, we know that God is
stronger than these things. He has showed us death cannot stop Him, and as time continues we will see Him being victorious over all the things that bring us down in the world. When God is ruler of our lives he’s able to take the pressure and
stress and give us ease that we wouldn’t be able to have without Him helping us.
Philippians 4:4-7 says, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let
your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and
your minds in Christ Jesus.” (NRSV) What good news this is! It isn’t always easy! Even when we’re in the midst of
things that should bring us down, though, if we can find a reason to rejoice God blesses us. Not with the erasure of those
things, to be sure. He will guard us, though, like a soldier watching to protect us from the evils that try to affect our minds.
I’m not going to tell you that nothing bad will happen to you if you’re a Christian. I don’t think the Bible says that
and I don’t think life tells us that. You’ll have things happen that make you sad or angry or depressed. But with God’s help
you can find a peace that is beyond anything we can understand. It doesn’t make sense to us because God is beyond anything we can wrap our minds around, and yet He can do it. So give your problems to God; pray to Him about what is bothering you, what is weighing on your mind, what is giving you trouble. You’ll have the protection of God for your heart and
mind. Thanks be to God!
Peace,
Pastor Chuck Meyer
Maricopa Lutheran Capital Campaign
Dear members of St. Paul,
We are writing to tell you about our church, Maricopa Lutheran, here in Maricopa, Arizona. At first, we were disappointed
that because this city is so new (incorporated in 2003), there is not much church presence. Most churches meet in a school.
We ae the only Lutheran church in the city. The growth we have seen since joining the church here, is so exciting! When we
first stated attending services here, there was one traditional service with maybe 35 people in attendance. As summer turned
to fall, then winter, the snowbirds started to arrive. Our best guess, was maybe 140 in attendance for one service. We are
always packed on Christmas Eve and Easter, though, not sure what the counts have been.
We now have a full time Pastor and two services! Both a traditional service and a praise worship every Sunday. We also have
a good size choir, bell choir and several talented musicians. Within the last year, Maricopa Lutheran has raised over $105,000
to put towards land and a new building. It would be great not to have to put signs out around town pointing people towards
the schools for worship services, and to not have to store and then transport hymnals, communion and worship items every
week for services.
Please see the bulletin board outside the church office with the letter for the capital campaign for Maricopa Lutheran Church.
Your prayerful considerations in supporting this campaign is much appreciated.
Cheerfully in Christ,
Roger and Dianna Smith

Stewardship News
“Give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.” Psalm 136:1
April and spring is on its way! What a glorious time of the year. An awaking of the Earth
and our souls are we continuing celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Let us continue
our stewardship of the many gifts God has given us.
Lutheran Campus Ministry is the emphasis for April. Campus ministry is for students, faculty, staff and others on campuses throughout the nation. There are 180 state and private colleges and universities with cooperating congregations and an additional 400 campuses nationwide. Campus ministry bears witness to God’s amazing grace through intellectual discourse of the university and
strives to communicate the gospel in fresh ways. In Iowa there is the University Lutheran Center in Ames at Iowa
State, The Lutheran Student Center at the University of Northern Iowa, Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City,
and Lutheran Campus Ministry in Iowa City, Iowa.
“I am freed from church walls and freed for service in community.” Said Monica Villarreal, pastor developer of Salem Lutheran Church in Flint, Michigan.
Answering the questions, “What are you freed from? What are you freed for?” was Villarreal’s introduction to the Global Young Reformers Network. Launched by the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), the
network is one component of the Protestant Reformation in 2017. The LWF is a global communion of
Christian churches in the Lutheran tradition. The ELCA is the only U.S. member church of the communion.
Villarreal and other under-30 pastors and lay leaders on the Global Young Reformers Network steering
committee—from Namibia, Sweden, Ethiopia, Germany, Latvia and Singapore—are inviting young Lutherans into this new network to celebrate their roots,
Under the theme “Freed by God’s Love to Change the World,” young leaders from many countries are
gathering through online platforms and face-to-face events. In the U. S., discussions about freedom and
faith animated participants at the 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering in Detroit.
Eventually the network will include representative from every member church of the LWF. Drawing on
their gifts, voice and passion, the young reformers will create and lead “Living Reformation” projects
that demonstrate ecclesia simper reformanda-the church in ongoing reformation.
“Our vision is to grown communion in the community of young people grounded in the Lutheran tradition,” Villarreal said. “Our church may have started in Germany, but it is a global expression today.”
As Villarreal has watched her Flint congregation open up to newcomers and welcome change, she has
seen the connection between reformation and renewal.
“Seeking the work of the Spirit does mean change,” she said. “I think the LWF is open to challenging itself around the Reformation, and this is a chance for young people to shape that on a worldwide level.”
In other stewardship news, the Pennies for Pavement and the house capital campaign are ongoing. Your donations are
needed to complete these campaigns.
We also are in need of a teller for the month of August. Please see a stewardship member or Tammy at the church office if you could be of help. Thank you.

April 2016
MARCH ACTIVITES: The students have been
learning about life cycles & are enjoying watching
our caterpillar to butterfly transformations. We
exercised with Peak Fitness, and learned the
importance of keeping healthy and exercising.
The students enjoyed Chapel time with Pastor
Meyer, Denise, Pastor Adam, & Pastor Jordan.
This month we talked about the greatest
holiday, and the gift of God’s son Jesus. We
learned how he died on the cross to save us
from sin.
If anyone has some means of supporting the
themes, subjects, or various concepts, please tell
one of the Preschool Governing Board or a
Preschool Staff member.
For our service project we collected toilet paper
for the Open Door Mission. We also made
Easter cards for the church staff, the prayer list
& people in the community.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: The Preschool has
four families needing financial assistance, this year.
If you would like to sponsor a child by assisting with
the preschool tuition for a week, month or school
year, please contact Heidi Lunn at the Preschool
(487-3960). Any amount would be appreciated.
VOLUNTEERING: The Governing Board, the
Preschool staff and the Extended Preschool staff
thank you for your continued support of the early
childhood ministries. No matter how small or how
big your participation—it does make a difference to
the students attending St. Paul Lutheran Preschool.
Governing Board—Jacob Young, Jamie Poland,
Breanne Chambers, Lindsay Anderson, Denise
Keay, Kristi Kenny, Norma Vorthmann.
ACTIVITIES: The Preschool Staff has spent time
creating an outline curriculum area as a focus for
each month. The April classroom activities that
have been planned were designed to support the
following curriculum areas.
Preschool & Extended Preschool Staff
Heidi Lunn, Angie Carberry, Christina Schmidt,
Carol Miller, Karen Swalwell, Amanda Hohneke,
Rachael Baber, Carrie Radford, Doris Quick,
Kalee Cross, and Isaiah Lagassie.
