Progreso Latino was established in 1977 to meet the needs of the
growing Latino population in the Blackstone Valley that was primarily
composed of Colombian immigrants who worked in the textile industry.
Today, Progreso Latino is a statewide organization serving a diverse
immigrant population and a new generation of Latinos.
Progreso Latino is known for its history of effectively developing creative
solutions to address broad-based social problems with community
involvement. The organization believes that the community can
continuously improve the quality of life of its people through education,

Gerry began his career with General Mills in 1992 in research and development. Prior to joining General Mills, Gerry spent more than 10
years as a senior manager opening and operating fine dining restaurants including The Capital Grille, Hemenway’s Seafood Grill &
Oyster Bar and The Old Grist Mill Tavern for RARE Hospitality, Inc., now owned by Darden Restaurants. A former Trustee of Johnson
& Wales University, Gerry holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Foodservice Management from the same school, where he also earned
a Culinary Arts degree in 1976, and received an honorary doctorate in Business Administration in 1999.

Gerry Fernandez is President and Founder of the Multicultural Foodservice & Hospitality
Alliance (MFHA), an educational non-profit entity in Providence founded in 1996. The
