Timetable Week 2– 18 September 2015
Lord God, no one is a stranger to you and no one is ever far from your loving care.
In your A reading from the letter of saint Paul to the Philippians 4:6-7
Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs, and
don't forget to thank Him for His answers. If you do this, you will experience God's
peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will
keep your thoughts and your hearts quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ.
To our Graduating Year Twelve Class of 2015…
We pray that their journey, with all its ups and downs, twists and turns, will be joyful. We
pray that they will always sense that the Lord is near them, that the peace of God who is
beyond our understanding will guard their hearts and thoughts in Jesus Christ.
Amen
Dear Parents, Students and Friends
Year 12 was farewelled on Wednesday at their final Academic Assembly. This week they have
been involved in a number of College organised activities that have provided time for reflection, prayer
and a bit of fun! This newsletter is dedicated to them and highlights a number of events and speeches
made during this week.
My thanks to everyone involved at the College for helping to make a memorable week for the students
and a special thanks to parents and Year 12 students who helped provide the luncheon that students and
staff shared on Tuesday.
During the Academic ceremony the handover of student leadership took place. On behalf of the College
community I congratulate Emma Zanotto and Lachlan Guertin who are our 2016 College Captains and
Vice Captains: Ellie Turunen and Karl Panarello.
Once again, Marian Catholic College is entering a sculpture in the REAL JUICE COMPANY CITRUS
SCULPTURES 11 - 25 October during the 2015 Griffith Festival Of Gardens. Our sculpture goes up
11 October and comes down 25 October. We require helpers to put it together and maintain it during the
2 weeks. Please contact our office if you can help.
A reminder for all students and families that Term 4 commences on Wednesday 7 October. All students
are to be in Summer uniform and hats are to be worn when participating in outdoor activities. Please
remember to put sunscreen in bags as the weather will be warming up quickly.
On Tuesday 8 October staff will be joining with St Francis teachers in Leeton. Our guest facilitator for the
day is Steve Collis. Steve is Director of Innovation at Sydney Centre for Innovation in Learning (SCIL), an
innovation unit embedded in Northern Beaches Christian School in Sydney (NBCS). With the SCIL team,
Steve has travelled the world seeking out examples of exemplary learning innovation. Steve facilitates
innovation at schools around Australia and beyond. He helps colleagues re-envision virtual and physical
spaces to facilitate personalised, purposeful learning and increased student engagement and agency.
Steve has been awarded ‘Excellence by a Teacher’ (National Quality Schools Awards) and ‘Microsoft
Innovative Teacher of the Year’ .
I wish everyone a peace filled, happy and safe Spring Term vacation.
Peace and Best Wishes

COLLEGE TUITION FEES
We take this opportunity to remind families your College Tuition Fee account for
Term 3 should have been received by 15th September 2015.
College policy requires fees to be paid in a timely manner to enable us to operate
on a sound financial basis whilst continuing to serve all students.
It is an expectation of enrolment that accounts are kept in order and each terms’
fees are to be paid by term end.
We shall be contacting arrears account holders to discuss the position of their
account. Should you experience difficulty managing your account, there are a
number of flexible payment options available to suit families’ budgets which we are
happy to discuss with you. Feel free to contact me at the office to make
arrangements.
Thank you to all families who conduct their account efficiently.
Joanne Smith
Business Manager.
Year 12
As part of the sign out procedures we will need to collect back
your Laptops and remove them from our school network so they
continue to operate outside of the school environment.
You have a couple of options. As part of your agreement you
have the option to keep the devices when you graduate. If you
bring them in we can reset them to factory settings with either
Windows Vista or Ubuntu Operating Systems. This will increase
their performance.
Your other option is to donate them back to MCC as part of
project SAM where we will rebuild them and send them on to
students in Samoa.
You can bring them in at any stage next term but it is
recommended to wait until after your exams are complete.

On Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th September the Year
7/8 Netball Boys embarked on their trip to Sydney to
play in the State Netball Championships at Sydney
Olympic Park, after being crowned Riverina Champions
in June.
After a long seven hour bus trip we arrived at Sydney
Olympic Park to beautiful warm weather. We then spent
the afternoon playing football on one of the many
grassed
areas
surrounding
ANZ Stadium, and exploring the facilities of Olympic
Park, before going out for dinner.
After a great nights sleep the boys were up early to start
their day of Netball Championships. Twenty-four teams
participated in the championships which included both
boys and girls from the eight regions of NSW. A March
Past was the first event of the day which was a
competition for the most creative and loudest chanting
team, and we came 2nd! Well done boys.
The teams involved in the State Boys Competition were;
St Josephs- Lochnivar, Great Lakes College- Tuncurry,
Richmond High, Denison College- Kelso and Inverell
High.
The boys went down in their first game by 5 goals, the
nerves got the better of them in the 1st half but they
regained their composure and caught up in the 2nd half.
Their 2nd game was played against the Winners- St
Josephs, they played well but unfortunately went down
convincingly. Our next game against Inverell was a close
game with the boys, displaying great sportsmanship and
talent, going down by 2.
On completion of the NSW Netball Schools Cup which
started back in May, we were placed 6th in all of NSW,
what an amazing achievement!
A big thanks to Kym Neal
at
PCYC
for
her
generous donation of the
Mini Bus. To MIA Coaches, MCC
PDHPE Dept and Sport Dept for
their donations in making this trip a
reality for the boys. Also thankyou to
Mr Moore for helping to drive and
supporting
the
boys,
greatly
appreciated.
Lastly as the boys coach, I have to
say that the boys are a credit to the
College, they were well behaved
and showed great sportsmanship,
what a fantastic group, I am very
proud of them.
Congratulations- Mitch Salvestro, Isaac Testoni, Connor Bock, Sebastian Schimizzi,. Ioane Saula,
Liam Townsend, Bahri Kocak, Matthew Parisotto, Thomas Royal and Thomas Baker.
“How’s the Serenity”
Last Friday, in conjunction with one of our feeder primary schools, St Patrick’s, I accompanied
three Aboriginal students Jacinta Simpson, Jada Charles and Connor Lynch to assist the Year 2
students as part of their HSIE wet and dry environments unit. On the day, Year 2 students were
given the opportunity to explore a wet environment within the local area, travelling 10km north of
Griffith to Lake Wyangan, for a day of hands on learning experiences.
The day began with a visit from local Aboriginal Elder, Aunty Mary Atkinson, who discussed the
significance of the local area to the Wiradjuri people, introduced different Aboriginal artefacts, and
read a Wiradjuri Dreamtime Story.
With the help of the Marian students, the year two students had the chance to touch and try each
of the artefacts. The day concluded with activities such as fishing, Aboriginal dot painting and a
“bush tucker” experience. Students explored this wet environment, and the many ways that
people can utilise and interact within the environment.
The Aboriginal students from Marian Catholic College were outstanding with the younger
students and as you can see, a great day was had by all!

GRIFFITH YOUTH DRUG & ALCOHOL FORUM
On Thursday a group of year 10 and year 11 students were invited to attend a “Youth Drug & Alcohol Forum” held at Griffith showground. This forum focused on highlighting the current issues
surrounding ice and other drugs within our community. Information was provided regarding referral options and opportunities to access professionals in the field of AOD (alcohol & other drugs)
at both a local and national level.
It was the aim of the forum’s organisers, Griffith Community Drug Action Team (CDAT ), Griffith
City Council and Argyle Housing that students would have relevant information to make informed
decisions and a better understanding of the negative impacts; both physical and psychological
that illicit drug use has on the individual, the family and the community.
Students were invited to ask the forum panel; which included Adolescent & Family Counsellors
from Noffs Foundation, representatives from the Griffith Local Area Command, Drug & Alcohol
Workers Griffith Aboriginal Medical Service questions relating not only to issues around “ice” but
also were able to clarify issues regarding mobile telephones and underage drinking. The forum
proved to be quite informative and even if students only learnt one factor their knowledge and
therefore their resilience has been increased.
Education is a powerful tool against the war on drugs and is a fundamental component of harm
minimisation; which involves a balance between demand reduction, supply reduction and harm
reduction strategies.
Next term students will have the opportunity to share the information and knowledge they have
acquired with their peers which will further promote the concept of informed, positive and healthy
choices when confronted with alcohol or drugs.

SCHOOL PARKING RESTRICTIONS
Griffith City Council has fielded several enquiries recently relating to school parking zones
and speed restrictions.
Griffith City Council’s Road Safety Officer, Greg Balind said parking restrictions around
schools are implemented to improve safety and the application of these zones are guided
by a number of regulatory requirements such as Australian Standards, Roads and
Maritime Services (RMS) Technical Directions and other statutory laws and drivers have
an obligation to comply with these parking restrictions.
“School zones can become very dangerous places simply because of the number of
people and vehicles moving around schools during pick-up and drop-off times,” said Mr
Balind.
“The misapprehension of parking illegally for only a short time will cause no harm is
completely unacceptable when considering it only takes a second for a tragedy to occur.”
Council’s Compliance Coordinator, Michael Toohey said Council is often contacted by
schools and concerned parents regarding illegal and dangerous parking around schools.
“Safety of school children is paramount and the parking, as outlined in the Australian Road
Rules and applicable to all drivers, are in place to ensure just that – that our children are
safe around schools,” said Mr Toohey.
“Council compliance officers patrol schools daily as part of Council’s responsibility to road
safety. It is incumbent on all drivers to know the road rules.”
Council would like to clarify the rules surrounding No Stopping, No Parking and School
Drop Off and Pick Up Zones. No Stopping means you are not allowed to stop there unless
there is a medical or other emergency, No Parking means you may stop for no more than
2 minutes while you are dropping off or picking up passengers, however you must remain
within 3 meters from your vehicle at all times. The same applies for School Drop Off and
Pick Up Zones.
Councillor Simon Croce, Chair of the Transport Committee said Council’s responsibility is
first and foremost the safety of the children.
“Maintaining safety in the school zones and on our roads is paramount and those not
complying with the law will be penalised,” said Councillor Croce.
“It is important all road users familiarise themselves with the road rules and comply to
avoid any chance of putting our children in harm’s way.”

YR 12 SOS MINISTRY PROJECT
Year 12 Sharing Our Story classes have embarked on
a Ministry Project for their last term here at the
College. The project places the students into
environments where they must actively participate
using the faith skills they have explored throughout
the course.
The first adventure was engaging with the Post
School Option participants in a bowling competition.
This initiative was identified by Mrs Patterson and
adopted by the Ministry Project team as a great way
to teach the students active ministry. The essence of the program is ‘good people doing good
things.’ This message was clearly evident on the day and the students were a shining example of
the College’s catholic mission. They embraced the challenge and were great ambassadors. Post
School Options have already issued the challenge for next year!
The second part of the Ministry Project was the visit to St Patrick’s Primary School. Both classes
worked alongside Miss Graham and her year 6 class in a soccer game challenge. The Marian
students posed as the Marian All-Stars and challenged the students in a game of soccer before
sharing morning tea. They had to display to the younger kids sportsmanship and teamwork while
encouraging all too actively participate. Once again it was a huge success and a great way for the
students to finish their term. Hopefully, this project highlighted the power of a positive attitude
and the role their catholic ethos plays in their life. Both teachers involved hope this Ministry
Project opens up a doorway into future community service and the benefits it provides. Mr
Moore and myself would like to extend a huge thankyou to all involved.
Mr Neville & Mr Moore
