CHRIST LUTHERAN TIDINGS April 2016 From Pastor McCarty Jesus Christ is ris'n today Our Triumphant holy day, Who did once upon the cross, suffer to redeem our loss. Hymns of praise then let us sing, unto Christ, our heavenly king, who endured the cross and grave, sinners to redeem and save. “Jesus Christ is Risen Today” verses 1 & 2 translated from the Latin version Dear Friends, We could actually sing “Jesus Christ is Risen Today” any Sunday of the church year. This is especially true of the Sundays in Easter. Every Sunday we celebrate the resurrection that occurred on the first day of the week. Every Sunday we celebrate the women at the tomb and the disciples on the road to Emmaus. We especially celebrate this joy during the Easter Season. The church celebrates the Easter Season as if one long day from Easter Sunday to the festival of Pentecost. You will notice our worship includes the paschal candle next to the baptismal font. You will notice that the liturgy skips the confession of sin during the season. We trust how powerful cross acts in our life during this season. Jesus act on the cross, not our contrition, is what truly reconciles us to God. Our Easter liturgy witnesses to this truth. The Easter Season occurs as if one day. Because of this our worship begins with the prelude, the Easter Proclamation and then the first hymn for these seven weeks. For these seven weeks, we also encourage people to receive Holy Communion while standing. For these seven weeks, our joy pours forth in song each Sunday morning strengthening our trust and faith in God. Bless you and your family. Bless your proclamation of your Easter joy. In the Name of our Risen Savior! Pastor McCarty Page 2 Christ Lutheran Tidings From the Director of Music I have now worshipped through four seasons at Christ Lutheran – Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, and Lent. Each of those seasons has its own unique character and focus on the life of Jesus. Now we have entered the most important season of the church year – Easter. Alleluia! He Is Risen! For seven Sundays we celebrate the resurrection appearances of Jesus with all of the images and hymns of praise that go along with these lessons. In all of these seasons, I have tried to choose hymns, anthems, liturgical pieces, and yes, even organ music, to try to help amplify the themes of the day and the season. But, when does a worship service begin? Does it begin when the pastor says good morning? No, it begins when you enter the nave to begin your prayers. As a church musician, it is my vocation to lead you in worship. It is not a job; it is a calling, and I take it very seriously. As such, everything I do in worship is, as Bach said, “Soli Deo Gloria”, To the Glory of God Alone! My organ voluntaries (Prelude, Offertory, and Postlude) are my offering to God. They are not background music, and they are not time-fillers. If that is all they were, then I would take much less time in preparation. I wouldn’t have to think whether or not a particular piece will help us to worship. I offer music to lead worship, no different than the pastor offering the words of a sermon, or a reader who takes great comfort in reading the lessons each week, or an assisting minister, whose offering to God is one of helping with prayers and communion. I would like to ask you in these seven weeks of Easter to pay careful attention to the music, to see if you can figure out how each piece fits together with the spoken parts of the liturgy to bring you closer to God. When you enter the nave for worship, and as the prelude begins, sit in silence and take the psalmist’s words seriously: Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. (Psalm 96:9) and For God alone my soul in silence waits. (Psalm 62:6) But then, when it is your time to respond: Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands; serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song. (Psalm 100:1) and Hallelujah! Sing to the Lord a new song; sing his praise in the congregation of the faithful. (Psalm 149:1) Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Hallelujah! (Psalm 150:6) Florence Jowers Page 3 Church Women United Church Women United will sponsor their “May Friendship Day” on Friday, May 6 here at Christ Lutheran Church. Flowers are usually ordered from Honey Bee’s Florist in Staunton; however, you are welcome to use flowers from your garden this summer as well. The Flower Committee also suggests that two individuals or families could give one vase of flowers each and still have their dedication posted in the bulletin. This would considerably save costs. Take a look at the flower chart and sign up on a date you would like to contribute flowers, then contact the church office. Flowers for the altar are needed! Please use the signup sheet in the coatroom or call the church office. Thank you!
