Plumas Eureka Fire Department
Fire Chief’s Report
For September 14, 2016
By Tom Forster
Personnel: No changes.
New Protective Clothing Lockers: PECAUX funded new
lockers, half of which were installed by Rich and John
recently. We are waiting on some parts to complete the
installation. The old plywood lockers, Part I, were given to
Quincy FPD for use in the East Quincy station. Tom hauled
the large cardboard debris to recycling. Thanks to Rich and
John for their good work with this.
Fire Apparatus & Equipment: Remaining to be repaired on
9122 is the cab lift hydraulic pump. We have so far been
unable to find the part number for ordering a rebuild kit.
Separate repair of headphone in one of the rear jump seats
remains to be scheduled.
Jeff Train has completed installing a test back-up camera on
wildland engine 9178, and it’s been well received. The other
FD vehicles will also get backup cameras installed soon to
help improve backing safety. It does not eliminate the need
for a spotter when backing up. PECAUX is funding this safety
project.
Jeff has repaired the latch on one of the rear compartments
on 9178. John completed coordination of hydro-testing for
the large SCBA Cascade system air tanks in Reno, and
testing of all the SCBA bottles is underway also. Still on the
maintenance ‘to-do’ list are replacing the station air filtration
filters in all four ceiling mounted units.
1
We are thinking through a relocation of the SCBA air
compressor and shelving units but too soon to report specific
plans. The goal is to free up some space behind 9122 for
easier foot traffic, and to clean up and organize the storage.
Firewise Community Work Day: The work party was
successfully held, thanks to all of those who participated on
Pine Cone Court. Still waiting to hear from USFS about
mounting the Firewise Community street sign near Smokey.
It would be on USFS land.
Cal Fire SRA 4290 Inspections: No progress yet on any
inspections for our community. Cal Fire says there are
communities never inspected with higher priority.
Training Being Coordinated: Upcoming training being
coordinated before the end of the year by Tom through
PCFCA includes include Driver Operator 1B (Pump
Operations), Social Media 101, Social Media For Use in
Disasters (FEMA), Incident Command System and
Managing Resources for Fire Departments (National Fire
Academy), and Hazardous Materials First Responder. Bill is
working on a Vehicle Extrication Class for November, but
we need to find old junked cars to cut up first.
Note: Board members and staff at welcome at the Social
Media courses. Jenni will also be offering an Emergency
2
Medical Responder training course for Jeff, Ryan, and Lew,
and Community CPR classes through a generous donation
coordinated by Frank Shepard!
Firefighters Muster Competition: This competition was
successfully held at the Plumas Sierra County Fair on
Saturday, August 13. Ryan Nowling, on the far left in the
photo below, represented our FD on a joint team, thanks to
Ryan. Robbie Cassou, Jim Hamblin, and Tom organized the
event. In addition to the newspaper feature published, results
and photos from the muster are posted on the Fire Chief’s
Website at: http://www.plumasfirechiefs.org/plumas-sierracounty-fair-firefighters-muster.html
DMV Firefighter Endorsement: Congrats to John for
successfully completing his final testing at DMV for his
license endorsement. Jeff will test soon. Thanks to both for
giving us two more licensed operators for the big fire
3
engines, along with Rich, Bill, Craig, and Tom.
Pancake Breakfast II, the Continuing Saga: PECAUX led
the second successful breakfast held this year. Thanks very
much to all who helped and for the outstanding support to
the FD by PECAUX!
Chief Andy Anderson Memorial: Tom participated in this
event through contributing video services. A memorial page
for Andy is soon to be posted on the Chief’s website with the
full program video.
4
Lost Sierra Hoedown: Bill is coordinating EMS coverage for
the upcoming 4-day music and camping event at the Ski Hill
September 22-25.
