Highlights of the U.S. National Arboretum
• The U.S. National Arboretum is 446 acres of greenspace in downtown
Washington, DC, just two miles from the U.S. Capitol.
• By Congressional mandate, the U.S. National Arboretum has a dual role:
education and research. The Arboretum provides programming on important
environmental issues such as bioenergy crops while conducting vital
horticultural research on topics like disease resistant trees.
• The U.S. National Arboretum is a showcase for world-class Collections and
Gardens as well as a place for recreation, calm contemplation and to simply
enjoy the great outdoors.
• The Washington Youth Garden is a program of the Friends of the National
Arboretum, primarily addressing the needs of under-served, low-income youth
in DC. With SPROUT field trips at the Arboretum, multi-year Garden Science
partnerships in schools fostering school gardens, and the Green Ambassadors
high school internship program, WYG exposes and teaches DC area children
plant science, nutrition, and environmental stewardship.
• FONA supports internships in the many gardens of the Arboretum that
provide training and experience for the next generation of horticulturalists and
environmental educators.
• Vital research conducted by Arboretum scientists on urban trees, new hybridized
varieties of plant species and endangered plants is supported by FONA.
• We expect an excellent turnout from members of the Congressional Agricultural
Committees and their senior staff as well as many other Congressional members
and Administration officials who are champions of this national treasure.
• The evening begins with cocktails in the National Herb Garden which is
celebrating the Year of the Pepper with a bountiful display. Tram tours of the
grounds are offered both before and after the dinner. Dinner features a farm to
table menu to showcase the diversity of American Agriculture.
