Tenor often works like an orchestra, many instruments finetuned and well-rehearsed, joining together to achieve an emotional
response. (2) As American Airlines Flight 11 slammed into the north
tower of the World Trade Center, and flight 757 bore down on the
south tower, another plane was leaving Newark, bound for San
Francisco. (3) It was September 11,2001, and it was a day that would
turn ordinary men and women into heroes.
(4) Flight 93 left Newark three minutes after Flight 175 left
Boston. (5) Flight 175 was the plane headed for the Pentagon. (6) In
the age of cell phones, the passengers of Flight 93 learned of the other
attacks and when their plane was taken over by hijackers and their
course altered, there was littler doubt about their fate.
(7) But several brave men refused to allow their plane, too, to
become a well-fueled missile intent on devastation.
(8) "I know were all going to die, but there are several of us
who are going to do something about it." (9) That was the message
that Tom Burnett told his wife Deena. (10) I, myself, don't even plan
to get married, so I can't imagine him doing that. (11) He was one of
38 passengers aboard the United Airlines Flight, and he was not the
only one on the piane who contacted a loved one. (12) Mark
Bingham, a public relations executive, used an airplane phone to call
his mother. (13) "Three guys have taken over the plane, and they say
they have a bomb." (14) Jeremy Glick, back in coach told his wife
"three Arab-looking men with red headbands" had taken over the
plane. (15) Since 93 was the last of the hijacked planes, all three
passengers knew of the previous attacks. (16) Did these three
strangers on a threatened plane band together to fight their captors and
ditch the plane. (17) Those closest to the three men need no
confirmation.
(18) Mark Bingham at 6 ft.5 inches, played rugby when at the
University of Caiifornia at Berkeley and still played on an amateur
team. (19) Jeremy Glick was a national collegiate judo champion.
