ack in September of 1985, I had the privilege of serving
as an acolyte for the late Pope John Paul II. The
occasion was the episcopal ordination of Cardinal Justin
Rigali, the eventual Archbishop of Philadelphia. A couple
years later, in 1987, I would again have the honor of being
among the Miami seminarians serving for His Holiness at
the famous outdoor Mass in Tamiami Park here in the
Archdiocese of Miami. I was in awe then, and I am in awe
now, as I think about how this beloved Pontiff, Blessed John
Paul II, has become a canonized Saint this past Friday. He is
now Saint John Paul II. It is amazing, but not surprising.
So many of us well remember seeing him as he road in
the pope-mobile along Biscayne Boulevard. We waved
yellow and white papal flags. Many of us waited for hours
just to get a glimpse of the man, the Pope, whom we had
prayed for daily at Holy Mass. It was an amazing gathering
of the faithful on that rainy day of the Papal liturgy at
Tamiami Park. So much preparation. So much anticipation.
Many of us waited in the rain just for a chance to see him,
and hear his inspiring words. As the rain subsided, he did,
finally, emerge to offer a few words and a long-awaited
blessing. Some of us even shook his hand! The Pope that
would serve as the universal pastor of the Catholic Church
for 27 years, who canonized 483 saints during his own
pontificate, would now become a saint himself. On this
Divine Mercy Sunday (which he instituted), it is particularly
fitting that we celebrate his life and holy example.
Actually, given his exemplary service to Christ and the
Church, it is really not surprising that he is now a saint.
Many Catholics had their own faith renewed by Saint John
Paul II's ministry. Many of us were inspired to "vocation" by
his example. Thank you, Holy Father! We miss you, yet
rejoice with you today!
It, indeed, is amazing that we have lived in an era that
has produced Saints of our own time. Blessed John XXIII,
the "happy" Pope of the late 1950's and early 1960's, who
convoked the Second Vatican Council, completely reshaping
Catholicism in the modern era, and enabling (among other
things) that we could enjoy the celebration of the sacred
mysteries in our own language, Saint John XXIII captured
the spiritual imagination and hearts of the faithful around
the globe. His pastoral leadership inserted the Church into
the issues of the modern world, which desperately needed
the clarity of the Gospel of Christ. Many of our seniors, our
long-time parishioners, remember John XXIII with great
fondness. Thank you Holy Father! We haven't forgotten you
either. And we rejoice with you today!
The Catholic Church now has two new Saints that
inspire us by their holy lives, and aid us by their
intercession.
As we conclude the Octave of Easter this weekend,
celebrating the glory of the Resurrection of Christ, it is our
joy to be assured that heavenly glory has now been shared
with two exemplary men of faith and devotion, who led us
with love and inspiration from above. They have now
inherited the Kingdom of God prepared for them from the
beginning of time. It is amazing, but not surprising. Where
they have gone, we surely hope to follow. Alleluia!

BELIEVING
N
ew birth, new life, good news! These themes
run throughout today’s scripture readings.
The first reading from the Acts of the Apostles
describes the joyful early days of the newly born
church, when members devoted themselves to
instruction, the communal life, the breaking of
bread, and the prayers. The passage from Peter’s
first letter echoes that joy, and assures those who
now believe though they never saw Jesus that their
faith will lead to their salvation.
But amid all the joy, the Gospel reading calls us
to sober reality. Not everyone can believe so easily.
Even an apostle can doubt this astonishing news of
the Resurrection. Across the centuries, Jesus
reaches forward to touch us today: “Blessed are
those who have not seen and have believed.”

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
O
ne of the great Easter traditions is
“mystagogy,” an ancient word meaning
“reflection on the mysteries.” It is a style of
catechesis, or passing on the faith. People who have
shared an experience, in this case those who have
been baptized at Easter, are urged to recall their
experience, reflect on its meaning, and apply their
insights to their new way of life.
There is an aspect of an experience that is
simply not available until you’ve had it. For
example, you may think you know weddings inside
out; you’ve been to dozens, seen hundreds in the
movies or on television, but until you’ve said “I do”
to another, there is a certain knowledge unavailable
to you. Those who go down into the waters of
baptism as adults have similar experiences; they
have all taken baths before, but not like this one!
Mystagogy helps such persons to uncover the deep
meaning of the experience, their sense of a new
beginning, of God’s abundant love, of forgiveness,
of community.
It takes time for the power of the Easter Vigil to
work its wonders for us. Those who are newly
baptized are called “neophytes,” meaning “newly
planted.” The tender buds of spring need care and
nurturing, and our new brothers and sisters need
your prayer and your faithful example.

OUTDOOR CANDLELIGHT ROSARY
IN MAY
Since May is a Marian month,
we will again have an outdoor
candlelight rosary ceremony on
the lawn surrounding the grotto
of the rectory-house yard on
Monday, May 5th, at 8:00pm.
It will be a beautiful way to
express our filial affection for
the Blessed Mother, as we pray
the rosary in five different
languages (English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese,
and Latin). The 25-minute ceremony will be
followed by a light reception under the rectory
carport. All are welcome.
CONFESSIONAL RENOVATIONS
We will soon be underway with
the renovation of three of our
confessionals, which we use in the
Sacrament
of
Reconciliation.
It will be an effort in making them
more comfortable, private, and
user-friendly,
easing
access
with new flooring and signage,
enhancing furnishing, and including climate
control and lighting. Each confessional will cost
$18,000. To date, donations which address one
of the confessionals has been received. Thanks
to those who have given toward this cause.

Our quarterly Healing Mass for
the infirmed, the weak, the aged,
and those facing surgery is
scheduled for Tuesday, May 20th
at 7:00pm. Multiple priests will

“WHY CATHOLIC?

A nation-wide program of adult
faith formation entitled, “Why
Catholic?,” is soon to be activated here at the
Church of the Little Flower. It will include
three components: 1.) the use of a meaningful
curriculum applied in each of our ministry
groups at the parish; 2.) the formation of a
new “large-group” ministry, entitled, “Why
Catholic?,” which presents a model for faith
development; and finally 3.) the formation of
small groups of parishioners, who study and
pray over Catholic doctrine, as they seek faith

REPORTING CHILD MALTREATMENT
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Each week
we will offer snippets from Virtus bulletins shared in the
last year. Virtus training is a child sex abuse awareness
and prevention program that begins with a live training
session and continues with monthly bulletins.
Incidents of child maltreatment exist in a variety of
forms: child neglect, physical child abuse, child abuse
homicide, sexual child abuse, child exploitation,
emotional or psychological abuse. Anyone knowing of
abuse or suspecting abuse should call the Florida Abuse
Hotline at: 1-800-96-ABUSE (1-800-962-2873).
Internet abuse or suspicion of abuse should be reported
to Cyber Tipline at 1-800-843-5678.
Additionally, anyone abused by a church member
and seeking help may call the Archdiocese of Miami’s

renacer, nueva vida, buenas noticias!
¡N uevo
Estos temas relucen en las lecturas bíblicas de
hoy. La primera lectura de los Hechos de los
Apóstoles describe los primeros días de júbilo de la
Iglesia recién nacida cuando los miembros se
dedicaban a la enseñanza, la vida en común, la
fracción del pan y las oraciones. El pasaje de la
primera carta de Pedro refleja esa alegría de la
nueva vida y asegura a los nuevos creyentes que no
conocieron a Jesús, que su fe los llevará a la
salvación.
Pero entre esa alegría, la lectura del Evangelio
nos hace volver a la realidad. No todos pueden
creer tan fácilmente. Hasta un apóstol puede dudar
de estas noticias extraordinarias de la Resurrección.
Durante dos milenios Jesús nos busca y nos toca al
decirnos: “Felices los que creen sin haber visto”.

en Quito, Ecuador. En 1995 en Cochabamba, Bolivia,
donde una imagen del Divino rostro lagrimó sangre y
después, una imagen de la Inmaculada hizo lo mismo.
En el transcurso del siglo veinte, muchísimas
imágenes de Cristo, María e incluso, el Espíritu Santo,
lloraron lágrimas de agua, sangre u óleo, emitieron
aroma de rosa o mostraron alguna manifestación
paranormal.
La ciencia logró explicar algunos de estos
fenómenos, pero en muchos casos no fue posible.
Normalmente, la jerarquía eclesiástica prefiere no
hacer declaraciones oficiales al respecto, por lo
menos, no antes de mucho escrutinio. El apóstol san
Juan recomienda examinar cada espíritu (1 Juan 4:1-3)
y esto es lo que la Iglesia hace con estas
manifestaciones sobrenaturales. Con investigaciones
científicas, sociales y espirituales se examinan
cuidadosamente estas manifestaciones a fin de
asegurar que provienen de Dios y no del diablo u
otros orígenes. En fin, la mejor prueba de la veracidad
de estos fenómenos es la conversión de los fieles.

El entrenamiento de Virtus es un programa de conciencia y
prevención del abuso infantil que comienza con una
presentación en vivo y continúa con boletines mensuales.
Los incidentes de maltrato infantil existen en una
variedad de formas: negligencia infantil, abuso físico del
niño, homicidio a causa del abuso infantil, abuso sexual
infantil, explotación de menores, o abuso emocional
o psicológico. Cualquier persona que sepa de abuso
o sospeche abuso, debe llamar a la Línea Directa
para Denunciar Abuso en la Florida: 1-800-96-ABUSE
(1-800-962-2873).
El abuso o sospecha de abuso por internet debe ser
reportado a la línea de informe cibernético (Cyber Tipline):
1-800-843-5678. Además, cualquier persona que haya sido
abusada por un miembro de la iglesia, y necesita ayuda,
debe llamar al Coordinador de Ayuda a las Víctimas,
en la Arquidiócesis de Miami, al 1-866-80-ABUSE
(1-800-802-2873).
La planificación para la muerte es tan natural para el cristiano como la
planificación para la vida. Como se dice en 1 Timoteo 5:8: “Si alguno no tiene
cuidado de los suyos, y especialmente de su casa, ha negado la fe y es peor que un
incrédulo.” Disponer un testamento es una forma de buena administración.
