From the Editor
Welcome to our Route 66 HOG Spring newsletter. As I promised
last year when we decided to go to a quarterly newsletter, there are
some new things in this issue along with articles from our Director,
Rick Cole, LOH Officer Heather Williams and Head Road Captain
Don Bancroft. The new additions are a Product Review page where we will
report on riding products by Harley-Davidson and other manufacturers. Also,
since I’m wearing two hats this year, (Editor and Safety Officer) there is a
safety page where I will give you important safety tips. Also, we are working
closer with Route 66 Harley-Davidson to provide you with info on dealership
events.
I hope you will enjoy.

DIRECTOR’S CORNER
Rick Cole
Wow….what a pretty day for a ride I’m thinking to myself. I love looking ahead of me seeing the line of
bikes, digging the accumulated roar of the pipes, the smell of the fumes, music from the speakers from
several bikes filtering through. Looking in the rearview I see just as many bikes behind. Perfect. A stop
for lunch then its saddle up and head back to town. Now I’m thinking, boy it is HOT. My phone tells me
it’s 101 degrees, head feels like it’s in an oven beneath the helmet, I’m thinking, I should have put some
more sunscreen on before we left the restaurant because I’m going to be cooking my shoulders. I’m
thinking it’s going to be one of those - take everything you’re wearing off and dump it all in the washer
when you get home kind of days… HOT, HOT, HOT!!! Then….…. The alarm goes off – 6am – it’s dark, 14
degrees, remnants of the last foul weather on the ground and I have to get up and get ready for work……
Remind me not to complain too much about the heat when Summer comes…!
Well, aside from the busy ride/event calendar each month, there are several longer rides scheduled. For
example, the Guymon 5 State Poker Run in May, the 2nd Annual Oklahoma Coahoma Connection ride to
Clarksdale, Mississippi in June, and the Colorado mountain pass run in July. It is always difficult for me
(I’m sure for some of you as well) to coordinate various trip opportunities with limited available time off.
If you have any questions on any of these rides, ask a Chapter Officer. So plan ahead as you can and join
other Chapter members on these rides. Any unpredictable weather notwithstanding, they are always fun
and you get home with great memories and pictures to enjoy in the future ( like maybe when that alarm
goes off at 6am, its cold and you’re more than ready for Spring….)
Ride On……
Rick Cole

LADIES OF HARLEY
Heather Williams
Howdy HOGsters! First of all, thank you so much for allowing me to lead Ladies of Harley for 2014. Granted, I was the only one crazy
enough to take it over (Ha!), but your confidence in me to take on this role and hold up the tradition is truly flattering. I am filling
shoes that are, frankly, hard to fill, but I’m not doing it alone. I have loving sisters and brothers of HOG, helping me along the way. So,
I’m honored to serve and hope that I do the position justice.
As I see it, my role in LOH is to inspire women riders and passengers to become more involved in HOG and Ladies of Harley. But beyond that, I hope to encourage all chapter members to participate in the LOH activities as well as chapter meetings, rides, and events.
LOH is not about division or relegating things to gender lines and opposing forces, it’s about bringing people together in a common
spirit and function. You are always welcome to attend LOH event, whether you ride your own or not and whether you are female or
not; you all are a vital part of LOH and necessary to the strength and cohesion of our chapter of which LOH is but a part. I love LOH
and women riders, but at the same time, I wish LOH had been named POH for “People of Harley”, because I believe it takes all of us to
make this work at a beneficial level.
Being out on a Harley (the best brand of motorcycle in the world, in my opinion), whether at the front of a bike or the back is vital to
experiencing happiness and finding our freedom as individuals. Riding is about what happens inside of us when we ride, that wonderfully satisfying, meditative, and enriching experience that’s intensely personal and yet shared by each of us. Riding keeps us sane,
whole, and happy. And, if I may be so bold, it’s vital to our existence.
I’m hoping to see all of you at the upcoming chapter rides and events. We’ve got some really fun stuff planned for this year starting
with the HOGs 4 Service Dogs Poker Run on April 19. Please come and hang with your HOG brothers and sisters, and let’s get a jump
on this year of the ride! Remember, you don’t have to ride your own to join LOH!! We love drivers and riders. J Yours truly, Heather

Don Bancroft
Hi, I’m Don Bancroft, your new Head Road Captain for 2014.
I have been riding on and off since my early 20’s and since joining the Route 66 HOG 4 years ago, I had never really ridden.
We go everywhere, Mississippi, Alabama, almost made it to Florida and New Mexico, Arkansas, Texas, Kansas, and Colorado. Ash Morris is
planning a trip to California. Scott Bunch is planning a little 5 day run up into Colorado for the Pike’s Peak 5 in 1 poker run. Cheyenne Miller
is taking us to Guymon, OK for the 5 state poker run. We are going to Mississippi for a Blues getaway and get this, we are
Staying at the Shack Up Inn. Going to try and see if these guys will let me take you down to the 3 sisters in the Texas Hill Country, and Medicine Park outside of Lawton. The Oklahoma State Rally is in our backyard this year up in Claremore, Ok, let’s show the world how we get our
kicks on Route 66. Well, gotta go, the 2014 Route 66 HOG State Park Tour has started and I gotta catch up with Charlie Morton, because
he’ll have those parks done by next week. Happy trails to you.

Harley-Davidson Switchback Jacket
A couple of years ago I was shopping for a new riding jacket and chose on the Harley-Davidson Switchback Jacket.
This jacket is suitable for springtime riding, being adaptable for cooler riding up to warm weather riding. The
Switchback Jacket doesn’t have a warm liner, so I purchased a larger size so a sweat shirt could be worn under it
for cooler temperatures.
The Switchback Jacket is designed to be worn in moderate temperatures. As it gets warmer, you can zip open the
front and rear vents and continue riding. As temperatures rise even higher, you can totally remove the outer polyester shell and have a mesh jacket that allows maximum airflow across your upper body. This makes the
Switchback suitable for even summer riding, plus you don’t need to oil up with sunscreen. It even comes with an
inner rain liner.
In case you’re worried about accident protection, the Switchback Jacket has protective pads at the elbows and
shoulders.
If you’re looking for a good spring/summer riding jacket, the Harley-Davidson Switchback Jacket is an excellent
choice.
