Base meets
challenges
Fourteen years at 14 Wing
– out-going Wing Commander
Colonel Jim Irvine wrapped up
his base life July 18, passing
command of CFB and 14 Wing
Greenwood both to incoming
Commander Colonel Iain Huddleston.
“Greenwood has been a
great home for my family – I
love the region, the base and
admire and have the deepest
respect for all the people in
and around the base.”
Irvine said Greenwood’s
“Operate as One” motto can
be seen in many of the things
“this wing made happen”
through his two years of command.
“This wing has worked as
a team far more than I could
have expected, given our resources. We supported operations, our people and we
started infrastructure projects
that will sustain the wing for

an awful lot of fun.”

The Sunset Ceremony is one of
the many Canadian military traditions that play an integral role in
the Canadian Armed Forces, making us proud and strong. Historically, the ceremony marked the
end of the service day and closing
of the gates of a walled city. Three
distinct ceremonies define the
sunset: the ancient ceremony of
beating Retreat, the Tattoo and
the lowering of the National Flag
of Canada at sunset.
At 7 p.m., the 78th Highlanders’ drummers beat the Retreat,
followed by a short demonstrato” wing following long range tion by 3rd Brigade of the Royal

During the lowering of the

Amazing Grace. The event came
to a close with the haunting resonance of a lone piper forewarning
lights out for this year’s Sunset
Ceremony.
As part of the event, the base’s
Wing Charities committee hosted
a BBQ and 50/50 draw, both a
success: $989.45 was collected
at the BBQ freewill offering, and
the 50/50 brought in $190 total.
Scotiabank in Greenwood will
match the $1,084.45 total, to
bring the sum to $2168.90.

All about Aldershot
Kennedy leaves command of ‘complicated’ Army resource
Sara Keddy,
Managing editor
You could forgive Major
Troy Kennedy for being super
comfortable and proud of his
Camp Aldershot team, but he
admits he loves clichés.
“It’s great to be king!”
Kennedy leaves the camp in
August after arriving in April
2010 – but you have to look
back even farther to see how
far he’s really come.
“I was born in Annapolis
Royal, I went to Acadia University and I was stationed here in
1986 with the West Nova Scotia Regiment. I started here,
and I needed to know what
Aldershot was doing now.”
What he found was a great
opportunity to get the message
out about what Camp Aldershot
is: home for several traditional,
Nova Scotian Reserve regiments, a summer training centre for the Canadian Army and
Major Troy Kennedy knew coming in as commander of Camp Aldershot he wouldn’t
get to stay forever: he leaves the place where he first trained 25 years ago August 20.

In the last few years, nonglamourous but essential
infrastructure improvements
have been made in the camp’s
waste water treatment system,
the range control building
and a few other site buildings, classroom refurbishing,
quarters for summer staff and
a new obstacle course.
“Sometimes we didn’t get
what we wanted, but we got
what we needed. We have the
plans in place, we’re flexible –
and it can’t all work.”
This was Kennedy’s first
command job, “and it was
absolutely the best job ever.
“We’re complicated, yes,
and I didn’t get to do everything. Did I leave enough to
last as a legacy? I don’t know,
but morale is good, life is interesting and I’ve had a blast.
“I was the right guy at the
right time in the right place
– and I wanted this job. It’s
bittersweet to leave.”

Special Olympics and others;
we’ve had radio spots featuring our people. I’ve worked
hard - and I said I was going to
do it - to get the message out
here about Camp Aldershot.”
Kennedy knows Aldershot is
a great resource – “and we’re
recognized.
“There will always be people
who look at the bottom line
but, the reality is, we have
11,000 people go through
here every year – there are 600
people in camp today alone.”
With about 80 regular staff,
Kennedy manages the needs
of all these “customers.” While
the camp is maintained by CFB
Greenwood, all its operations
run through Kennedy’s office.
nuit!

Branch ‘family’ has new CO
Sara Keddy,
Managing editor
Lieutenant-Colonel Heber
Gillam may be a hard act to
follow as 14 Wing Greenwood’s wing administration
officer, but whether it’s in his
professional role, part of the
commanding officer’s informal
band, the Wing Nuts; or as
part of an extended “family”
of branch agencies is difficult
to say.
Gillam turned his duties over
to incoming Wing Administration Officer Lieutenant-Colonel
Ted Cosstick July 17 in a
change of appointment ceremony in the Annapolis Mess.
He kept an infamous box of tissues at hand: “there is a myth
there is a Kleenex box on my
desk, and if you enter my office, someone is going to cry.
Let’s see if this is true today.”
Wing Administration looks
after all areas of support for a
military member and her family, from pay and claims while
on official duties to health,
fitness, childcare, the library,
financial services, day camp,
housing and much more.
“Our diversity is our
strength,” Gillam said. “If it
needed to be done, we did it,
Out-going 14 Wing Administration Officer Lieutenant-Colonel Herber Gillam, right,
hands the keys to a range of base facilities under his responsibility to new Commanding Officer Lieutenant-Colonel Ted Cosstick.
S.Wilson, 14 Wing Imaging
making operations front and
centre.”
He went on to thank the
wider community, as his role
also includes representing the
base on local health, business
and development boards.
“You opened my eyes to the
connections and communications between a base and a
community.”
Interaction with the various
unions representing 14 Wing
civilian staff taught him “about
the benefit of open and honest
communications.”
He acknowledged pushing
his own staff hard, but “you’re
awesome. You made me proud
to come to work everyday,
knowing we’d be supporting
the wing.”
14 Wing Greenwood Commander Colonel Jim Irvine
described Wing Administration’s work as “crucial.
“The quality of life in Greenwood is second to none in
the Canadian Armed Forces,
and I have a deep respect and
profound admiration for all
your work. Lieutenant-Colonel
Gillam demanded top results,
he was a caring boss and knew
to look for the best value for
money – but the best support
for families in the end.”
Cosstick said, in all of his
pre-command orientation
briefings, tours, reports and
meetings, it was clear what
ties Wing Administration together: “words like ‘support,’
‘provide,’ ‘help,’ ‘sustain,’ ‘offer,’ ‘deliver’ – it is very evident
the principal element in each
section is ‘enabling.’ Sections
and staff, through their good
work, enable operations and
the wing commander to meet
his mandate.”
La Branche des services « Famille »

Sara Keddy,

Take in a ‘mega’ whale watching trip
The 14 Wing Greenwood
Community Centre has arranged a family trip to Brier
Island for a “mega” whale
watching tour August 24. This
is a great opportunity for families to see the natural wonders
of Nova Scotia.
A 40-passenger bus will
leave the Centre at 2 p.m.
for the 5:30 p.m. tour. The
tour itself will be three to five
hours long, so we will arrive
back on Brier Island no later
than 10:30 p.m., when we
will then make our way back
to Greenwood (approximately
midnight).
All of our trips are only available to military members, their
families and those who have
Community Recreation Cards.
To register, drop in to the centre’s main office to complete
your waiver forms and make
the payment. Ages 15 and
older will pay $35, ages six
to 14 will pay $25 and those
five and under will pay $20
(all plus HST). There will also
be a transport fee of $10 per
individual or $20 per family.
This trip will have limited
supervision; therefore, each
participant is responsible for
his or her own well being.
Youth must have their parent
or guardian’s permission.
Any youth 12 years of age
or younger must be accompanied by an adult (over the
age of 18).
communautaires. Pour vous

14 Wing firefighters
aid in Kingston call
Captain John Pulchny,
14 Wing public affairs
officer
July 29 and into the early
hours July 30, firefighters from
across the Annapolis Valley
battled a fire at an abandoned
paper warehouse in downtown
Kingston.
At the request of Kingston
Fire Chief Watson Armstrong,
14 Wing Greenwood Fire and
Emergency Services also responded with a five-man crew
manning one of its 12,000 litre
aircraft rescue and fire fighting
vehicles, as well as its incident
command vehicle; to support
the many volunteer firefighters
in keeping the flames consuming the old wooden building
from spreading to surround-
ing buildings, including the
village’s Lions’ hall and Legion
and the Frasers commercial
complex.
Additional firefighters were
called in to ensure the wing, its
workforce and residents were
properly protected during this
emergency.
“The Kingston Fire Department led a very successful
defensive attack, which limited
the damage to only the warehouse, and none of the adjacent
structures that were in very
close proximity suffered any
appreciable damage,” said 14
Wing Fire Chief Captain Bruce
Paradis. “We used the large
water volume of our truck,
coupled with the deployable
boom and the capacity to move
while pumping large volumes
Page 9
August 12, 2013
of water, to suppress the fire
in the western area of the
structure.”
Although a tremendous effort was put forth by the many
departments that responded,
the entire structure was razed.
Heavy equipment was brought
in to tear down the remaining
structure.
“Under a pre-arranged agreement with the wing and local
Valley fire departments, our
firefighters were extremely
proud to work along side the
many volunteer firefighters to
battle this fire as a team and
keep it from spreading,” said
Paradis. “Other than our five
that responded, all the rest were
volunteer - and some were still
on scene 12 hours later. That’s
community dedication.”
14 Wing Greenwood Fire and Emergency Services’ aircraft firefighting and incident
command vehicles were both part of the response team working overnight in Kingston July 29 and 30 on a major warehouse blaze. The wing department is part of the
Valley’s mutual aid system.

Lieutenant Gillian Kelland, left, receives a Dutch military
medal marking the successful completion of the annual
Nijmegan march.

‘experience’
Sara Keddy,
Managing editor
Great, an experience – but
tough.
A few words can’t begin
to describe the experience
of 14 Wing Greenwood’s
Nijmegan marching team July
16 through 19 in Holland, but
Lieutenant Gillian Kelland
adds “well-prepared.
“It was a lot of work, a huge
commitment two or three
days a week for five months.
We sacrificed our time and
supervisors re-organized
work schedules all along

huge effort from Greenwood
helped us.”

numerous distance marches,
but only two 40-kilometre,
back-to-back routes. The
Nijmegan challenge is four
40-kilometre, back-to-back
marches.
“It was great – the weather,
it was so hot and sunny.
Tough, but everyone from our
team made it through. That
last day was tough. No matter about the blisters and the
pain – everything still hurts.”
Kelland credits amazing
hospitality in the support
camps every night, including
inflatable kiddie pools of cold
water waiting to soak feet
fresh out of marching boots.
Eleven Greenwood personnel represented 14 Wing,
and another marched with
a London, Ontario military
team While the Canadian
military has marched in Nijmegan since 1952, using
the challenge as a memorial
for First and Second world
war soldiers, the Dutch army
has been training with the
Nijmegan route since 1909.
Over 40,000 marchers from
50 nations enter the annual
challenge.
“It was really great to be
recognized as Canadian everywhere we went,” says
Kelland. “People just yelled
out at us, and we had flags
and pins to pass out. The
last five kilometres, all the
Canadian teams met and
were presented with our Nijmegan medals, and then we
all finished together, all in
ranks down the Via Gladiola.
Everyone was there, all the
spectators bring glads and
you carry them with you and
in your rucksack. It was a
huge party.”
Canadian Armed Forces Nijmegan marchers took a break on two occasions to hold
memorial services at Vimy Ridge (above) and the Groesbeek cemetery. 14 Wing
Greenwood marcher Lieutenant Gillian Kelland says the services were “an experience.
Remembrance Day services home are always pretty powerful, but you don’t ever see
the graves…. They were so well taken care of, just picture perfect.”

invited to “return” each year,
along with industry and scientific staff from across Canada.
The event marks an important
part of MP&EU’s calendar,
providing the opportunity to
down tools, develop professional relationships and reflect
on the past year’s projects.
Perhaps most importantly,
the event embodies the spirit
of MP&EU’s mantra, Novam
Quaere Scientiam, or “To seek
new knowledge.”
RETERN 2013 was held July
26 and 27, kicking off in the
Birchall Centre’s main theatre
with a full day of briefings.
Outgoing Commanding Officer
Major Kurt Lalonde welcomed
attendees from across Canada,
promising a full schedule and
encouraging an open discussion. Representatives from
industry talked about their dayto-day operations, providing
some insight into the challenges
of supporting the CP140 modernization and life extension.
Some exciting developments
in radar and acoustic technology were presented, and the
prospect of getting to test some
of the new equipment in the
future stirred excitement among
MP&EU project officers. The
sheer number of developments
in the pipeline shows other nations are also investing time and
money into the development of
their long range patrol assets.
July 27 was an opportunity to
stretch the legs, with MP&EU’s
annual RETERN invitational golf
tournament and BBQ. Nearly
60 people signed up to play a
round of golf at the Greenwood
Golf Course. The event culminated in awards presentations
and the finest steak and lobster
Nova Scotia has to offer. A truly
great event, both professionally
and recreationally, event OPI
Captain Martin Labbé and his
team pass on their thanks to
the Greenwood Golf club and
its staff for hosting such an
excellent event.

Stamp sounds
Staff at the Kingston post office had fun July 19 with the release of stamps celebrating great Canadian recording artists. Postal products featuring The Guess Who, Rush,
The Tragically Hip and Beau Dommage were released, and visitors were also treated
to delicious home-made brownies, ginger ale and root beer. Great old tunes filled the
retail area with the acts’ sounds, highlighting the accomplishments of these talented
Canadian musicians. Staff also abandoned their uniforms and dressed themselves as
roadies and musicians for the day. Two clerks, sometimes mistaken for Sonny & Cher,
were actually attempting to impersonate Burton Cummings of The Guess Who and
Geddy Lee of Rush. Even one rural route driver decked herself out in funky attire to
promote the day’s theme. From left are Jackie Lowe as Geddy Lee, “groupie” and
RR driver Kelly West, Muriel West as Burton Cummings, and roadies Pamela Blank

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20
Aries, you have a firm grasp on what
you need to accomplish in the week
ahead. Stay focused on your tasks
and that focus will pay off by the
end of the week.
TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21
Taurus, your financial burden is a little
easier this week. Perhaps you have
caught up on bills or have received a
little extra money you didn’t expect.
GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21
Gemini, whether you are in a
relationship or are looking for a
new romantic partner, the next few
days are the moments for putting
on the charm.
CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22
Cancer, many things need to get
done this week before you can set
work aside and take a much-needed
vacation. Once you get through the
bulk of things, you can relax.
LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23
Save some of your good fortune
for others, Leo. When you share
the wealth, not only will you feel
better about yourself, but also you
will certainly have more friends
around you.
VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22
Without you the well-oiled wheels
of the work machine just won’t spin
correctly, Virgo. That can put a lot
of pressure on you in your career,
so weigh the options of a day off.
Fun By The Numbers
Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid,
broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers
1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can
appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out
the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric
clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name,
the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

won’t always make you popular
with others. Though some may
not rally around you this week,
they’ll relent.

Something that seemed like a good

Scorpio. Switch gears while you can

It’s good to have a support system.

14 Wing Greenwood Community
Centre gym.)
September 7 starts out with
a family pancake breakfast
at the Annapolis Mess, followed by the annual community, business information

youth and family clubs and
programs set up to display
their offerings, answer questions and register participants.
The event is accompanied by
kids’ activities, games and BBQ.
Also September 7 is the Iron
Kids Triathlon, a skateboard
competition, youth dances and
family swim and skate times.
September 8, St. Mark’s and
Queen of Heaven chapels offer
regular Sunday services, and
the afternoon features bowling.
Golfers are welcome at the
Greenwood Golf Club September 10 for the Wing Welcome
tournament. At the other end of
the calendar, the Annapolis Mess
is bringing in Sunday Punch
September 28 for an adult Meadowbrook pig roast and dance.

enfants. On y trouve toutes
sortes d’organisations et
d’aménagements, à la base
et en ville, qui vous facilitent
l’installation », a indiqué Jill
Apple Bowl, rue Church.
St. Mark’s et Queen of Heaven

Last chance for day camp fun
Campers have had a blast
over the past few weeks in 14
Wing Greenwood summer day
camps, offered at the community centre.
Campers have added tie dye
clothing to their wardrobes,
seen Monsters University on
the big screen and travelled
to Pirates Cove in Dartmouth.
There are still spaces available for the last two weeks of
camp: week seven is a week to
celebrate holidays, and week
eight is a mystery week filled
with campers’ favourites. If
you haven’t already registered, it’s not too late! Office
staff at the community centre
are here each day from 8:30
a.m. to 4 p.m. to sign up new
campers.
Sports camp has also been
jam-packed with activities.
Campers toured the base during military week, and tribes
competed against each other
during Survivor week, with
