THE PLAY MUST GO ON! - Crow River Senior Center
MARCH
APRIL
Serving the Communities &
Surrounding Areas of
Albertville, Hanover
and St. Michael
2013
THE PL AY MUST GO ON!
Participants at the Crow River Senior Center put on
their first play in January. It was called
“Ladies at Lunch” and we had 150 people attend. The
audience loved the play and the cast had so much fun
doing the presentation that they are going to bring to
the stage the sequel! “Ladies At Poker” will be
presented on Tuesday, May 21. There will be an
afternoon and evening performance. See the
information below on the play. Be sure to get your
tickets early before they sell out. There will be a
raised stage and a better sound system for this event
so everyone can see and hear.
Ladies At Poker
The Ladies meet at Suzie’s home for a game of poker
– which they know little if anything about. Suzie’s
husband, Willoughby, sticks his two-cents-worth in
and the game disintegrates into a sharing of make-up
and poker-bridge. As usual men are a part of the
discussion.
Date: Tuesday, May 21
Time: 1:30 PM – dessert and coffee
6 PM - dinner theatre
Cost: Afternoon - $5
Evening - $10
Tickets must be purchased in advance at the Senior
Center or at St. Michael City Hall.
More Programs Means More Volunteers Needed
The Crow River Senior Center offers a lot of
programs and with all these events we are in need of
more volunteers. We have a very limited budget for
paid staff and depend on volunteers to make things
happen around here. If you are a participant; is there a
way you could help with an event or program, help
with meals, bake for an event, data entry, set up
tables, etc. If everyone does their share, it won’t be a
burden for just a few. Contact Joyce on how you can
help or any suggestion you can offer!
Year End Numbers
At the end of each year the Center must compile
numbers of participants, volunteers, classes, etc. to
turn into our agency Senior Community Services.
SCS is a United Way Agency and these numbers are
important for funding and tracking the success of the
Center. The numbers are:
Individuals using the center: 1500
Meals served: 4998 (includes Meal on Wheels)
Health Programs and Services: 398
Education Events: 397
Recreational Events: 422
Volunteers: 145
Volunteer Hours: 12,063
**Volunteers remember to record your volunteer
hours on the clip board at the receptionist’s desk.
Spring is on the way. Check out the events listed in
this newsletter. Stop in and have a cup of coffee and
say Hi!

Dr. Kimberly Martin of Great Lakes Chiropractic presents: “How to Stay Young the First 100
Years”
The How to Stay Young Class emphasizes the fact
that it is estimated by the year 2050, 800,000 Americans will be over the age of 100 and many will be
living to 150! And although this is good news in
that we will experience the benefits of more time
with our friends and family with a longer life, we are
also confronted with the fact that we are more likely
to experience the health risks associated with aging. One of the biggest problems we have seen
come about with an increased life span is the increase in musculoskeletal problems which interferes
with our mobility. Therefore, even though we are
living longer, we do not have the mobility to enjoy
the extra years of our life to the fullest.
During the How to Stay Young Class your group

GETTING TO KNOW OUR VO LUNTEERS
DARLENE ERION
If you are enjoying a cup of coffee at the Center, you
may have met our volunteer Darlene Erion. Most
days she will be up at the Senior Center, be it working in the kitchen, calling Bingo, a meeting for the
Advisory Committee, playing Whist, helping plan
the menus or play practice for “Ladies at …” This is
one busy lady, whom credits the Senior Center as a
life saver for her. After her husband passed away,
she needed to find something besides cleaning and
TV to fill her days. This search led her to the Crow
River Senior Center. Now her two sons tease her that
she is never home! In addition to her sons Robert
and Adam, she has three grandchildren. Prior to
moving to St. Michael in 1988 she resided in St.
Louis Park.
THE STMCS CRIBBAGE GROUP
The StMCS Cribbage Group started two years ago
by Erv and Mike Bruner. Erv noticed an article in
the paper on a unique way to help grade school kids
with math, via cribbage. For St. Michael Catholic
School, this great idea turned into helping the 7th
grade class on a weekly basis. Now Mike and Erv
needed to recruit assistance from the rest of the Friday cribbage players to take on this volunteer commitment. The StMCS Cribbage Group quickly
gained the members of Jerry Bromen, Dick Daly,
John Jaeb, Ray Meyer (cribbage board wood crafter), Eric Pearson, Bob Petron, Dick Theis, Don
Wurst and Sylvia Wurst. The kid’s math scores
have improved, and the children are growing and
gaining confidence. The first 7th grade class loved it
so much, it has evolved into including the 8th grade
class too. This StMCS Cribbage group is always
looking for new recruits to join them on their weekly
cribbage sessions at the St. Michael Catholic School.

WRITING GROUP
WRITER’S GROUP
very dirty handkerchiefs they had had to use in cleaning up the mess the mothers would know just what
had happened. Maybe even some of them had a good
laugh when everything was said and done.
Every time the students went out for their noon recess they came in wet and we girls removed our long
brown stockings and hung them near the heating
stove in the class room. I do not remember what the
boys did with their wet jeans; I don’t suppose they
took them off.
Back home things got a little boring when Mom didn’t want us to play in the mud, so off we went into
the barn, climbed into the calf pen. My brother found
a calf that was big enough and strong enough to hold
his weight. Up he climbed and off they would go, the
calf turning in circles and then running thru the door
between the two areas where the calves were housed.
Poor little calf tried his best to remove this person
from his back and in the end the calf was the winner.
Next it was my turn. Wow, I was scared even to get
on but on I got and off we went the calf and I.
Around in a circle and off to the door. This is the
spot where my ride was done and to this day I have
no desire to be a bull rider at the rodeo.
As the days went by the snow all melted and the
ground dried up enough that Mom decided it was
time to rake the yard. Yuk, what a job. It seemed she
thought I was big enough to help even when I was
fairly young. If I couldn’t manage the rake there was
always the windrow to pick up and put in the wagon
and take it out to an area in the yard where we could
burn it later in the day. Now all our hard work paid
off. It was time to burn all the old grass, leaves and
anything else raked up. You couldn’t waste all that
good fire, so the whole family gathered around and
we had a winner roast and of course some roasted
marshmallows. But before you could have the wiener
roast you had to find a stick just the right size to hold
your wiener and of course having someone who
could use a sharp knife make a point on the end of
the stick. There is nothing like a winner roast at the
end of a hard day of raking the big lawn around the
house. Not only did we learn to do our share of work
but all the memories that were made and held in our
minds and hearts all of these years. Thanks to our
Moms and Dads for all of their persistence and patience.

Early Spring
I recall the early spring of the year, the time I am
thinking of is the early spring of my life as well. The
large snow banks around our farm yard are shrinking
fast and when I am trying to walk on the top of them
my feet sink deep into the mush and I can feel the
cold, wet water oozing into my boot. The things I
have pushed deep into the snow in the winter are
now starting to appear. I was a tom boy and so some
of the things I find are tin cans that I had used when I
was playing war. Oh wow, there is that little shovel I
couldn’t find. As the snow is disappearing the mud is
becoming very plentiful and of course this is very
inviting in itself. The old school house I attended in
my first year and a half of school sat low to the
ground with not much of a foundation under it. I can
remember my brother who was three years ahead of
me and his friends having a lot of fun making rivers
and canals in the melting snow and watching the water run where they wanted it. I guess they had not
really planned ahead one day as when they came
back to school the next day they were met by two
very upset teachers. You see the canals they had so
carefully dug in the snow and mud had found its way
thru the walls or foundation of the school room
where the primary children held their classes. Yes
you guessed it. There was dirty muddy water all over
the floor where the mothers had been busy just a few
days before scrubbing and waxing getting ready for
the bridal shower for the teacher who was teaching
in the upper grades. I am not sure if Mrs. Swanson
and the soon to be Mrs. Samuelson were as upset
about the dirty floor or what the reaction of the women who had been on their hands and knees were going to say about the situation. I guess when the boys
came home with
