his time of year, most people are thinking
about gift giving. The best gift, of course, is
the one God gave us—His son, Jesus Christ.
But what can we give? Consider this: Your personal
story of how God changed your life is the most precious possession you have! With it you can avert
misery and death for countless others. Share your
story. It’s your best gift—and one they may keep
for eternity!

Dear Partner in Faith,
I read recently where December is considered by many to be
the most depressing month of the year. Perhaps it is the stress of
the holidays, or just that the year is ending and things hoped for
way back in January have not materialized.
Unfortunately we are living in a world where people are giving
up every day, even as others endure every

without stopping. (The fastest woman in
the race completed the course in 2 hours and 22 minutes.)
A reporter asked Zoe, whose every step is painful, how she kept
going all that time, and she replied, “I just keep putting one foot in
front of the other until I get where I want to go.”
I believe that is exactly what our Lord would have us to do. And
He’s promised to take each step with us and that “he who endures
to the end shall be saved.” Mark 13:13.
Those who keep on keeping on with Jesus will one
day hear the words, “Well done!” and will spend eternity with Him.
So Keep On Keeping On with Jesus through the end
of this year—and forever!

ruce and Tammy Chance
have worked in 3ABN’s
donations department
for many years and have had
“front row seats” to the miracles that brought Three Angels
Broadcasting Network into
existence.
“My mom could no longer hold a regular job
due to a back injury. I remember mowing
lawns with her, using a push mower to make
a little money just a few weeks after my
father’s death.”
“I was born in Benton, Illinois,” Bruce begins, “but I’ve
lived in and around West Frankfort all my life. Even though my
parents were raised in church,
they quit attending. But occasionally my grandmother took
me to church with her. Then
in 1999 my dad was diagnosed
with cancer and the doctor said
he wouldn’t live more than 18
months, but I praise God that
he rededicated his life and was

given 10 more years—which he
used wisely by witnessing and
living for the Lord.”
Tammy was born into the
Shelton family as the baby sister
to four older brothers. Her parents were poor in means but rich
in talents, dedicating their voices
to singing for the Lord. A massive heart attack left her father
permanently disabled at age
35, but church and music continued to play a very important
part in their lives. And despite
their financial difficulties, they
remained a closely knit family.
Loss at an Early Age
Then, just a month before
her fifteenth birthday, Tammy’s father suffered another
heart attack and passed away.
“I had just begun my ninth
grade homeschooling,” Tammy
explains, “but now my mother
and I were the only ones left,
since my older brothers were
married and gone. So I had to

ing because of the expense, and
began attending the public high
school.
“We had no income or savings, and my mom could no
longer hold a regular job due to
a back injury. I remember mowing lawns with her, using a push
mower to make a little money
just a few weeks after my father’s
death. I just can’t imagine the
desperation she must have felt,
mowing lawns at her age—but
we needed every penny we could
make!
“Because of my father’s illness, we’d spent a lot of time
together,” she continues. “He
was the most wonderful dad in
the world. He died in July and I
started high school in August,
so I was still reeling from the
loss when I met my husband in
October. I felt such an emptiness from my father’s death that
Bruce became my lifeline.”
A few years later Tammy
married Bruce. He followed
his father’s career footsteps,
overhauling mine equipment
for several years before beginning a 15-year career working
on equipment underground in
the coal mines, until they shut
down. Then his love of bird
dogs landed him several jobs in
Mexico and the United States,
managing fishing and hunting
lodges for large oil and coal companies who entertained potential
business associates with lavish
trips and accommodations.

the tremendous sacrifice
made by each person
sending a donation. “As
I talk to people, I often
discover they’re giving
something that has a
huge sentimental value,”
Bruce says.

The “Great Big Barn”
But what did they think when
Tammy’s brother, Danny, began
speaking of building a television station that would reach
the world?
“I was pregnant when I heard
about it,” Tammy says. “I’d lost
my first baby and was having
complications with my third
pregnancy, so I was in and out
of the hospital a lot. Mom kept
me updated, but I honestly didn’t
believe my brothers could make
this happen without dedicated
financial support. However,
soon after my son was born in
1984, I began going out there
to see for myself, and I experi-
“The hardest part was listening to all my
coworkers’ rhetoric about ‘those crazy
Shelton boys’ and their great big barn”
enced the oddest feeling—like I
was standing on holy ground! I
guess we all sensed that land was
designated for something none
of us could quite comprehend.”
After working long hours in
the coal mines, Bruce helped
when he could. “I’d work from
four to midnight and get up
at 7:00 a.m. to go pound nails
with my brothers-in-law,” he
recalls. “Then I’d come home,
pack my lunch bucket, and do
it all over again. But the hardest part was listening to all my
coworkers’ rhetoric about ‘those

crazy Shelton boys’ and their
great big barn. They thought
we were nuts, but kept saying it
didn’t matter, because when we
failed, they’d be able to put a lot
of hay in that barn!”
Tammy’s recollections of
3ABN’s early days include the
delivery of the first satellite
uplink dish. “It was as big as the
moon—and just as expensive!”
she exclaims. “After 3ABN was
on the air I began coming out
on Sabbath afternoons to answer
phones. Eventually I worked as a
secretary for my brothers Danny
and Kenny, helped in accounting, ran a camera, and worked
in master control on Saturday
nights. I also did a program with
my brother called Friends, and
cooked meals for the workers,
since there was nowhere else to
eat in town. But after working
there several years, I decided
to be a stay-at-home mom and
enjoy my boys.”
“What Is This You Have in
Your Hand?”
In the summer of 2001 Danny
began talking to 3ABN’s viewers
about the Israelites who brought
gifts of gold, silver, precious
stones, and costly fabrics to the
Lord with which to build the
tabernacle in the desert. “Today
the Lord asks us, ‘What is this
you have in your hand?’ ” Danny
said. “Is it something that can
be useful in reaching a lost and
dying world?”
“3ABN was not prepared for
what happened next,” Bruce
recalls. “People began sending
all kinds of things, and soon
Danny called me to help sort,
organize, and sell the many valuable donated items. Although
I had my summers off, I knew
I’d be going back to work in the
fall, so Tammy came, too. She’s
the one who actually established
a system to organize and enter
each item into a database, making sure people got their correct
receipts.”
At first, Tammy worked out of
an attic office in the warehouse,
but one day Danny took her
out back to a pole barn where
3ABN’s television production trucks were parked. “We
could put you here,” he said, but
Tammy admits she was rather
skeptical—especially since the
building didn’t even have a bathroom! (The building did become
their office, and is currently
undergoing some much-needed
improvements.)
After Bruce’s lodge closed
down, he came to work with
Tammy full time, and with the
help of their daughter-in-law,
Bethany, they continue to transform those valuable items into
hundreds of thousands of dollars
for the ministry. Tammy says,
“We have been so blessed to
have Bethany helping us. What
she does is invaluable.”
Useful Things
Because of worldwide economic depression, many items
are not as valuable as they once
were. “We stay up-to-date on
the value of useful items,” Bruce
says, “and we’re well aware of
current market prices, but today
anyone with an Internet connection can list an item and
easily ship it almost anywhere
in the world. As people become
desperate for cash, they literally
flood the market. And when
more of the same items are avail-

I’ve had to learn the business,” Bruce says, adding
that he has all the testing
equipment and performs
extensive research, both
on the rarity and current
prices of items entrusted
to him.

our items so 3ABN can

able, their rarity goes down—as
does the price others are willing
to pay.”
Buyers’ guides and appraisals have also become less than
reliable. “Six or seven years ago,
a Hummel figurine might have
been listed at $300 in a collector’s book, and I may have gotten
$100 for it,” Tammy adds. “But
in today’s market I probably
couldn’t get over $40.”
Bruce focuses mainly on gold,
silver, coins, and jewelry donated
to the ministry to further the
work of the Lord. Negotiating
with a network of professional
dealers and private buyers he’s
carefully developed over the

for those items than the average
seller can.
“To be a good steward, I’ve
had to learn the business,” he
says, adding that he has all the
testing equipment and performs
extensive research, both on the
rarity and current prices of items
entrusted to him.
“We also work closely with
our accountants and auditors to

and documentation systems,” he
notes. “All gifts are tax deductible in the United States, and
if someone has their original
receipt or certified appraisal,
they can legally receipt themselves. Of course, upon request,
we can send them a receipt for
what the item actually sold for
if they don’t know the value
of their item. And although it
may take quite some time for
an item to sell, the Bible says,
‘To everything there is a season,’
(Ecclesiastes 3:1).”
Because of their years of
experience, Bruce and Tammy
advise those who donate to
put their gift in God’s hands
first, then trust 3ABN to get the
best price possible. They’re also
keenly aware of the tremendous
sacrifice made by each person
sending a donation.
“As I talk to people, I often

I’ve asked them to pray about it,

The Blessing
of New Technology
Our production/program
manager, Jay Christian, and our
engineer, Michael Babb, have
discovered ways to use new
technology to bring glory to God
and reach more souls.
“We’re pleased that 3ABN
Radio Network is on the leading edge of using cell phone
technology to reach listeners,”
Jay says. “Recently we added
3G streaming capability to our
website and have received many
positive responses from our
listeners. We’ve noticed that
our listenership has increased
every week of our 3G feed, and
we’ve had many happy listeners.
Couple that with our regular
MP3 live stream for cell phones,
and now we can reach at least
95% (or maybe even more) of
all cell phones capable of streaming live Internet streams. With

continue broadcasting a consistent
message, and reach more souls for
Your Kingdom. Amen!

In fact, it seemed that each

We hoped this evangelistic

people to the Lord as they heard
that familiar speakers on 3ABN
Latino were coming to their
city. We also wanted to tape the
28 fundamental biblical beliefs
of the church, so we asked four
distinguished speakers to each
Confirmation
We contacted pastors Rubén
Bullón, David Perusquía, Robert
Costa, and Frank González, but
even before we began advertizing the series, we received an
e-mail with this message:

When our call center representative, Rocío Barrón, told
him we were coming to his city
very soon and invited him to
come to the meetings, he was

The doctor was true to his

we had the privilege of meeting
him. His face glowed with joy as
he told us how God had blessed
him through 3ABN Latino. His
joy was contagious, too, but I
must say it was something we

White As Snow
Hooray! It’s December—and that makes my heart long for
snow! You know, those beautiful, divinity candy-like, fluffy
mounds that cover everything in sparkling invitations to fun? Snow
is one of my favorite gifts from God. I think He sends it to us just for
fun. Well, actually not just for fun, but that’s a mighty good reason for it
anyway. In Isaiah 55:10 God tells us His other reason for sending snow
to the hills in winter. “For as the rain comes down, and the snow from
heaven,” (see, I knew it was a divine gift!) “and do not return there, but
water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to
the sower and bread to the eater.” See how God thinks ahead for us? He
makes snow as a kind of reservoir for water until the summer gets hot
and dry. The warmth of the sun gradually melts it, then it runs down into
the rivers to water our crops, giving us all kinds of good things to eat!
The next verse says the Bible is like a reservoir of water for our hearts in
thirsty times—like now, and He promises, “It shall prosper in the thing for
which I sent it.” That means all His promises are true. If you take them
into your heart He’ll give you eternal life. How awesome is that? Hooray!
It’s snowing again!
With love and hope,

Against All Odds
After high school, Wendy
began working in housekeeping
at a local hospital, but life became
difficult when she fell in love with
a man who became the father of
her first two children.
“My babies’ father had a drinking problem and wasn’t around
much,” she explains, “so I ended
up raising them on my own with
government assistance, living in
a housing project. I was trying to
do everything right, but I felt like
I wasn’t, so I thank God for my
mom who helped me out a lot.”
Eventually Wendy met her
husband and moved to nearby
Thompsonville where she met
two neighbors, Kim Smith
and Idalia Dinzey. They both
worked at 3ABN, and Wendy
enjoyed getting to know them.
Things were finally looking up

You gotta show them!”
Her family kept a constant
watch through the long weeks
and months that followed, and
her friend, Kim Smith, came
to visit often. As her health
improved Wendy moved to a
rehabilitation center to relearn
how to walk, read, write, cook,
and do other daily tasks. Her
determination was apparent
when a nurse found her furiously
pedaling on an exercise bike.
“You really wanna get out of
here, don’t you?” she asked.
“Yeah,” Wendy replied, “but
this bike isn’t going anywhere!”
An Invitation—and a Job
Wendy’s recovery improved,
but she still had difficulties with
walking and short-term memory
loss. “I was so glad to see her
home again,” says Idalia, “and
although she was struggling to
walk, I could tell she wouldn’t
give up.”
But it was Kim who invited her
to church one day.
“I’d been looking for a church
where I could learn more truth,”
Wendy says, “and the first time I
came, I was surprised they were
so friendly and loving. There
were many things I didn’t understand because of my amnesia, so
I kept praying, You spared me,
Lord, and I know You have a
reason. So I refuse to be disabled!

I was interested in a housekeeping job at 3ABN, I jumped at the
chance. There was just one problem, though. I didn’t have a car.”
However, God had something
worked out. Impressed by the
Holy Spirit, two more 3ABN
employees, J. D. and Shelley
Quinn, offered to give her a car!
“I was speechless,” Wendy
says, “and my husband was skeptical at first. ‘People don’t just give
cars away,’ he said. But I told him,
‘They do if God tells them to!’
The title was transferred, we got
the car licensed and insured, and
things really started changing! I
didn’t know if I could even keep
a job,” she continues, “but two
years later I’m still here!”
As she caught glimpses of
3ABN television programs,
Wendy began wishing she could
watch them at home. “Then
one day I was flipping through
the stations and I came across
3ABN!” she says, adding that
from that point on she received
even more answers.
[Editor’s note: The signal from
the Johnston City station she
watched is 25 miles away and
is aimed away from her home
towards the much larger city of
Carbondale, Illinois. It’s no doubt and see,” she says. “God’s plans
a miracle that she could receive are good, and I know they’ll get
it at all, but that’s another story!] their answers—I did!”
A Star in Her Crown
Wendy felt a strong urge to
join the Thompsonville Seventhday Adventist Church, and soon
she requested baptism.
“Even though I’d been baptized before, I didn’t want to
just go on ‘once saved, always
saved.’ I wanted to be sure,”
she says.
“When I was baptized everything became brighter and
I realized I wasn’t waiting for
everything to happen anymore.
God had something planned—
and it was happening!”
Idalia remembers that day
as well. “As I watched her being
lowered into the water all I could
think of was, Why hadn’t I asked
her to church? I’d missed so many
opportunities, but I was glad
Kim asked. I know she’ll have
another star in her crown in
heaven for that!”
(In fairness we should tell you
that, years before, Idalia invited
Kim and was delighted when she
joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church.)
“I’m growing in God’s grace
and I intend to stand firm in
my faith,” Wendy says. “If someone’s questioning whether to
visit a Seventh-day Adventist
church, I suggest they just try it

wouldn’t bring me through all
this to leave me now. I refuse to
give up, because if I do, I’ve failed.
Instead, I’ve asked the Lord to

recites several of her favorite
verses: Matthew 19:26 which
says that with God all things
are possible, and her favorite, 2
Corinthians 12:9: “And He said
to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for
you, for My strength is made
perfect in weakness.’ Therefore
most gladly I will rather boast in
my infirmities, that the power of
Christ may rest upon me.”
“Oh, and there’s one more,”
she adds, citing 1 Corinthians
1:27: “But God has chosen the

chosen the weak things of the
world to put to shame the things

he inspired Seventh-day

White, had quite a bit to
say about Christmas, a day when
tradition celebrates the birth of
our Savior, Jesus Christ. Consider
carefully these excerpts from the

guide to finding opportunities to

Him most!
Christmas as a Holiday
“Christmas is coming,” is the
note that is sounded throughout
our world from east to west
and from north to south. With
youth, those of mature age, and
even the aged, it is a period of
general rejoicing, of great gladness. But what is Christmas,
that it should demand so much
attention?
The twenty-fifth of December

ary and popular. But yet there is
no certainty that we are keeping
the veritable day of our Savior’s
birth…. The Bible does not give
us the precise time. Had the
Lord deemed this knowledge
essential to our salvation, He
would have spoken through His
prophets and apostles, that we
might know all about the matter.
But the silence of the Scriptures
upon this point evidences to us
that it is hidden from us for the
wisest purposes.
In His wisdom the Lord concealed the place where He buried
Moses. God buried him, and
God resurrected him and took
him to heaven. This secrecy was
to prevent idolatry. . . . For the
very same purpose He has concealed the precise day of Christ’s
birth, that the day should not
receive the honor that should be
given to Christ as the Redeemer

lantar fasciitis is a very
common problem recognized in the beginning by low-grade pain on the
sole of the foot at the junction
of the heel pad and arch, and
spreading to the arch of the
foot. This is caused by microscopic tears and inflammation
of the plantar fascia (specialized fibrous connective tissue)
where it inserts into the calcaneus bone—the principal bone
of the heel.
These tears result from
repeated bending of the foot in
walking, excessive jogging, or
running—especially in shoes
that do not protect from jarring. The injury may also occur
because the ankle is not as flexible as it should be, due to tightness in the calf, wearing high
3ABN World December 2010
heels, or a sedentary lifestyle.
Swelling is not usually present.
The risk of developing plantar fasciitis increases markedly
if one is overweight. It is also
much more common in older
people, as the footpad covering
the heel tends to thin out as one
gets older. However, it can occur
at almost any age.
If the condition has gone
on for very long, X-rays will
often show a little “heel spur,”
or thickening where the connective tissue inserts into the heel.
Removing this almost invariably
has caused more trouble than
help, and we now know that the
spur is the result, rather than the
cause, of the pain and discomfort. Surgery or cortisone injections are not advised because
they may cause trouble.
don is essential. Each day stand
two feet from a wall, lean forward
and support yourself by placing
your hands at shoulder height on
the wall while keeping your heels
flat on the floor. Hold the stretch
for about ten seconds, push away
for five, and repeat this three to
six times for each session. Repeat
this approximately five times
throughout the day.
2. Heet liniment, available at
pharmacies, is effective, since it
contains cayenne extract, wintergreen, and camphor painrelieving ingredients. After the
application, the sole of the foot
will often feel quite warm. That is
normal. Do this two to six times
daily until the pain goes away,
then drop down to applications
daily. We have known of people
who obtained relief from plantar
fasciitis using this remedy in as
little as one week, but most will
require several weeks, or even
two or three months. Because
moisturizing lotion after the area
has dried may be helpful.
Caution: Always wash your
hands thoroughly after using any
cayenne preparation. It can cause
severe burning if you rub it into
your eyes!
3. An ice massage for 20 minutes several times a day can be
very helpful.
4. A prolonged, 20–30 minute
firm massage of the area is also
good.
5. Running or walking shoes
with soft heels are recommended,
and some have found relief from
wearing hiking boots. Well-fitted
arch supports, or a semi-rigid
heel cup and a soft rubber pad
in the shoe can be helpful.
Note: If the pain disappears,
be sure to continue to wear the
protective footwear, go on a
weight loss program, continue
your stretching exercises, and
avoid jogging or other activities
that would cause re-injury.
Make Your Own Cayenne Extract
You can make your own cayenne extract pain reliever by adding
a 1/2 teaspoon of ground cayenne pepper to three or four ounces of
rubbing alcohol in a small bottle (the exact amount is not critical).
Shake well twice a day. It can be used right away, but does not reach
its peak potency until about two weeks. At that time, the grounds
can be strained out to cut down on the staining of hosiery.

ollie Steenson shared a favorite recipe with us this month
and noted, “The first time I made this soup my son looked
at it suspiciously, but after his third bowl, he admitted it
was about the best he had ever eaten! It has become my family’s
favorite and is perfect for a cold winter day.”
Minestrone Soup
Directions:
In a large soup pot, set on medium heat, add olive oil and sauté onion,
parsnips, carrots, celery, and garlic for about 5 minutes. Season vegetables with salt. Add tomato paste, chipotle cubes, and vegetable
stock. Bring to a simmer. Add bay leaves, all the beans, and adjust
seasoning to taste. Simmer 20 more minutes. Add fresh oregano just
before serving. Serve hot over cooked pasta and garnish with chopped
scallions. Best served with good crusty bread and fresh pesto.

God’s promise to Adam and Eve.
Their waiting was over—but we

Jesus’ Second Coming, why not
remember where we have been
led in the past? We must remember the central truth of Christmas—the Messiah came the first
time as promised. And the truth
is that He will come again—after
much waiting!
In America we celebrate a
number of holidays—Mother’s
Day, Father’s Day, and President’s
Day. Are these dates the birthdays of the people we honor? Of
course not. And Christmas most

Wars and rumors of wars,
earthquakes, and disasters are
everywhere. To many, these
seem like the end of the world—
but the end is not yet. There is
more waiting.
After Much Waiting
Waiting is God’s way of making better people of us—more
longsuffering and patient,
like He is. While we wait for
certainly is not the birth date of
Jesus Christ, either, as 3ABN’s
programming clearly states.
However, the Christmas holiday
is one we can safely participate
in because of the truth it points
to: Jesus Christ came to our
rescue—as promised!
Use this wonderful season
to bring up Jesus’ first and Second Coming to those around
you. They will be much more
receptive to its spiritual significance than on any other holiday
on the calendar!

or a twelve-year-old, Jude
was fun to be around. He
was funny, daring, and
rather smart. But he was also
unpredictable. Jude had a mischievous side that would always
keep me on edge as I constantly
tried to guess his next move.
I remember a day when Jude
and I were in the pine forest
by the local middle school. He
pulled out a lighter and showed
me how quickly the pine needles would flare up—and how
quickly they could be put out
with the smack of the hand. It
was cool the first two times,
but the third time we lit them,
the flames quickly spread to
neighboring branches and trees.
Before any of us said a word we

Facebook Friends
Even as adults, some of us
have picked friends much like
Jude; they’re fun to be around,
yet unpredictable. They can
be the life of the party—or
send you running for your life!
Friends are important, but how
we choose them will have longterm consequences.
It is nice to think that we have
many friends, but that term
seems to have lost some meaning. Our Facebook page may
say we have 450 friends, but we
must ask ourselves how many
of them would stand firm by
our side for truth. How many of
these friends have an eye single
to the glory of God, and can
therefore be trusted to have our
best interest at heart? The Bible
says in Proverbs 18:24, “A man

Reformers

Temperance

any Bible verses call
Christians to health
and sobriety—such as 1
Corinthians 6:20; Ephesians 5:18;
and Titus 2:2–4. Still, this aspect
of faith has been a challenge to
Christians over the centuries.
One of the first social vices
the Reformers opposed was
drunkenness. In the centuries
leading up to the Protestant
Reformation, nearly all Christians felt that alcoholic beverages

were something God intended
for humans to use, but that
drunkenness and alcoholism
were sins. In other words, they
saw drunkenness as being like
gluttony—the excessive use of
something normally good.
The Roman Catholic Church
so fully supported drinking that
monks were regarded as the
best beer makers. “Throughout
the Middle Ages and into the
early 18th century, the Cath44

olic Church was the primary
producer of beer, wine, and
most spirits in Europe. Since
sanitation was nonexistent, and
fresh water sources were often
contaminated, the safest way to
slake one’s thirst was to visit the
friendly monks down the road
and drink their blessed beer.”1
These beverages were not just
for the public. The church clergy
used them freely, so much so
that “a gallon of beer per day was
the usual allowance per person,
even for nuns.”2 Some monks
drank beer even during fasts.
Early Reformers
Martin Luther spoke out
against drinking binges, but his
efforts failed to gather popular support. This was largely
due to the extreme popularity
of beer drinking in his home
country, Germany. And for his
part, Luther loved beer and consumed it regularly. Indeed, most
Reformers and their followers
were moderate or occasional
drinkers.
If we skip forward a couple
centuries, we find John Wesley
condemning distilled drinks
and those who sold them. In
fact, one of the early rules given
to Methodist societies was to
abstain from distilled drinks
unless prescribed by a physician.
To an extent, these Methodists
can be seen as the first glimmer
of a temperance movement.
However, even Wesley was not
opposed to the sacramental use
of wine.
More Rigorous Reforms
In the 1800s a number of
reformers began advocating
two alternatives to the so-called
moderate use of alcohol: Some
argued that, while drinking alcohol may not be inherently sinful,
it was wiser and more responsible to not drink. This view
became known as “abstentionism.” Others argued that it was
sinful to drink alcohol, except in
extreme cases of necessity (medical purposes). This became
known as “prohibitionism.”
The rise of alcoholism in the
1800s, and its association with
poverty and crime, led a number
of social reformers to stand up
against it. United States Founding Father and physician, Ben
jamin Rush, took
aim at alcoholism
and is credited for
introducing the
concept of addiction. His example
inspired other Americans.
In 1838, Theobald Mathew,
commonly known as Father
Mathew, established the Total
Abstinence Society in Ireland.
His efforts got 3 to 4 million
Irish—more than half the population—and later, more than
500,000 Americans, to sign an
abstinence pledge.
Many early opponents of
alcohol aimed primarily at distilled liquors, because they were
cheap and potent. However, the
holiness focus and social activism of the Second Great Awakening (1790–1840) widened
the opposition into complete
rejection of alcohol use, including for Communion. A primary
argument of the Great Awakening preachers against drinking
was that it offset self-control,
giving power to sinful desires
and tendencies.
As we saw previously in this
series, Joseph Bates (later a

Human appetite won the popular vote
over reason, conscience, and virtue.
The more widespread replacement of wine with unfermented
grape juice was helped along
by Thomas Welch’s discovery
of a way to pasteurize grape
juice in 1869, the same year he
founded the Welch’s company.
A Wesleyan Methodist minister
himself, Welch used his unfermented wine in services.
The Movement Grows
In the 1870s, women became
a strong force in temperance.
Previously, women had lacked
much opportunity to stand up
46
3ABN World December 2010
and be heard on social and religious issues. But with increasing civil rights attention after
the Civil War, women began to
flex their social muscles. Tens
of thousands of women participated in marches and prayer
vigils, leading to the Women’s
Temperance Crusade, and
then to the powerful Women’s
Christian Temperance Union
(WCTU), which led a very successful abstinence campaign.
The Seventh-day Adventist
leader, Ellen White, was a popular and sought-after speaker
in this movement. The WCTU
gained such power that laws
against drinking were passed in
several states. In 1884 the World
Woman’s Christian Temperance
Union (WWCTU) was established, seeking an international
voice.
Along with Father Mathew,
other Catholic voices supported
abstinence, including the Catholic Total Abstinence Union of
America. Both Pope Leo XIII
and Pope Pius X praised the
movement for its success against
alcoholism. However, when
the 18th Amendment began to
gather support, Catholic sentiment seemed to change, as Prohibition was seen by some as an
attack on the Eucharist.
Popular support in the United
States eventually led to the 18th
Amendment to the U.S. Consti-
tution in 1919, enforcing Prohibition. Similar, but more limited,
laws were passed in other countries—especially the British and
Nordic ones, but sadly, these
laws all lasted no more than a
few decades. Human appetite
won the popular vote over reason, conscience, and virtue. And
when the states eased their laws,
so did many churches.
Although the war for temperance seemed lost, the few
churches that held to principle offered an open door. Men
and women beat down by the
“mocker” (Proverbs 20:1) could
find help and support. This was
truly a new ministry of healing,
and we’ll explore additional
health reforms next month.
