an opportunity to meet others in your situation and
develop a mutual support system. Through discussion, education and problem solving, you will learn

Grief continues well
after loss occurs and each

unique ways. Many people find it helpful to talk with
others going through a similar experience. To support
you on your journey, Home Health United offers grief
support options to anyone in the community who has
experienced loss. A five-week interactive support
group called - “Spouse/Partner Loss” - will be held at
the Waunakee Senior Center on Tuesday evenings
from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. starting September 2.
In the group we will explore the various stages,
and seasons of grief using DVD’s, helpful handouts,
talking points and discussion to help participants better understand their grief journey.
There is no fee to participate, however participants are required to register for the group either by
calling Home Health United at 1-877-356-4514 or by

provided for appointments between the hours of 8:00
a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. If possible when scheduling your appointments, keep in
mind that early morning and late afternoon (especially Friday afternoons) rides may be more difficult to
find a driver for.
R.S.V.P. Rides
Please call the RSVP Ride Coordinator, Sue
Kalscheur (849-9908) at Waunakee Senior Center
between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through
Friday, when you are in need of scheduling a ride
to a medical appointment. You must schedule your
ride by calling the Senior Center. Do not call drivers directly.
Sue’s usual hours are weekdays between 8:00
a.m. and 12:00 p.m., however, if you should call
outside of her working hours, please leave a
detailed message. Your call will be returned during
the next working day.
We ask that you call as soon as you know your
appointment date to allow enough time to find an
available driver.
Please remember RSVP should be your last
resort if you do not have family or friends who
can take you to your appointment.
Remember calling for a RSVP Driver Escort ride
should be your last resort used only if you don’t have
family or friends who can provide you with a ride.
We know this a wonderful service and how important
the rides are to many of you. With your help in calling as soon as you know you have an appointment
(at least three business days) the chance you may
be told “I’m sorry there’s no driver available” is less
likely.

each month from 8:30 a.m.
to 12:00 p.m.; the 2nd
Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to

from 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.; and the 4th Tuesday

Appointments can be made by calling the Senior
Center at 849-8385. Service is provided by Home
Health United.
RSVP Driver Escort Rides Request
The RSVP Driver Escort service provided through
the Senior Center schedules rides – lots of rides. In
2013 736 rides were provided getting people to
medical appointments. January through June of this
year 296 rides have been scheduled. Sue
Kalscheur the Senior Center’s ride coordinator
spends much of her time taking calls from those who
need a ride and then contacting drivers to see who
is available to provide the ride. Sue’s normal work
schedule is Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to
12:00 p.m.
Diabetic Foot Care Clinic
The drivers, many of them retired, are all volunteers.
They lead busy lives and so at times are difficult to
contact.
Taking all this into consideration we request that you
call at least three business days in advance of your
scheduled appointment. The more time you allow
us to make the necessary calls the more likely it is
that we will be able to find you a ride. Rides can be

Words And Pictures
Friday, September 19 at 12:45 p.m.
Prep school English teacher Jack
Marcus laments his student’s obsession with social media and good
grades rather than engaging with the
power of the written word. A onetime literary star, Jack has not published in years, filling his spare time
with drink versus the art of language.
He meets his match in Dina Delsanto, an abstract
painter and new teacher on campus, who was once
celebrated for her art. From the start, the two flirt
and provoke each other with equal relish. With a
performance review looming and his teaching job on
the line, Jack hatches an inspired plan for galvanizing
student interest in their studies: he declares a war
between Words and Pictures, confident that the former can convey greater meaning than the latter. Dina
and her art students accept the challenge between
Jack and his English students, and battle lines are
drawn. Rated Pg-13. Running time is 1 hour and 51
minutes. Starring Clive Owen, Juliette Binoche, and
Bruce Davidson.
Popcorn and beverages are served
for a suggested $2 donation.
Trip To Bountiful
Friday, September 5 at 12:45 p.m.
Carrie Watts is an active widow living
with her overprotective son and
bossy daughter-in-law. No longer
able to drive and forbidden to travel
alone, she wishes for freedom from
the confines of the house and begs
her son to take her on a visit to her
hometown of Bountiful. When he refuses, Mrs.
Watts is undeterred and makes an escape to the
local bus station, where she befriends Thelma, a
young woman traveling home. When her son discovers she is gone, he calls in law enforcement to
help, but Mrs. Watts is one step ahead of them and
convinces the local sheriff to help her on her journey
home to Bountiful. Rated TVPG. Running time is 1
hour and 30 minutes. Starring Cicely Tyson,
Vanessa Williams, and Blair Underwood.

reduces seniors’ falls risk.
Taught by a health professional, participants learn

with a wide range of information about factors that
contribute to falls. Guest experts visit to share information on the role of vision in keeping your balance,
how medication and supplements can contribute to
falls, ways to stay safe in your home and out in the
community, what to look for in safe foot ware and
much more. A physical therapist demonstrates the
exercises and is available for follow-up.
Participants receive an exercise manual along
with many handouts from this Stanford Universitydeveloped curriculum. Most important, participants
share falls stories, tips, techniques and support in
interactive and fun sessions.
Anyone who is 65 years or older, has experienced one or more falls or fears falling can benefit
from the class. With support from Safe Communities
and United Way of Dane County, the $35 fee
includes instruction, materials, and healthy snacks.

at a leisurely pace!
You’ll be introduced to the “Windows” environment, learn the basics of word processing (typing documents on

will allow you to use your computer in countless ways. Adults of any age are welcome! Call 608-849-8385 to

Masters of War – History’s Greatest Strategic Thinkers
Thursdays, October 2 - November 6 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
The Great Courses is a series of lectures and classes by prominent university professors about almost any
topic that might be taught at a college. The Senior Center owns a large number of these classes, thanks to the
generosity of a Waunakee resident. They are available for checkout at the senior center and the Public Library.
Each "class" consists of a DVD for each lecture and a guidebook. The subjects that are available range from
traditional great thinkers, artists, history, art history, science and even International cooking and beer brewing.
To introduce the Great Courses we have chosen the class Masters of War - History's Greatest Strategic
Thinkers. The course is taught by Professor Andrew R. Wilson from the U.S. Naval War College. He tells us
why strategy matters, then moves to Thucydides and Sun Tzu. If you don't know who these characters are,
this is a great time to find out!
The Great Courses program is a free program and is co-sponsored by the Waunakee Public Library and the
Waunakee Senior Center. Discussions will be led by Bev Kennedy and will be held in the Senior Center
Computer Lab. Please call (608) 849-8385 to register.

Leave a Lasting Legacy
In its ongoing fundraising effort, the Waunakee Senior Center is offering an opportunity to
purchase an engraved tile to be placed on the patio. The Senior Center Patio, which over looks
beautiful Village Park, has 136, 24” by 24” tiles. Your purchase of a whole or half engraved tile will
be a lasting symbol of your generosity to your community and support of the Senior Center.
You may wish to have your name, the name of a loved one, family or
business engraved on a tile.
The cost of a full 24” by 24” tile is $500. A half tile is $300. For an
additional cost, a logo may be placed on the tile.
For more information contact Cindy Mosiman, Senior Services
Director at 849-8385 or stop at the Senior Center and take a look at the
beautiful tiles which have already been engraved.
