Day of the Dead (All Souls Day)
Día de los Muertos
During the month of October,
Mexico and other La n American countries prepare for the
celebra on of All Saints Day
(November 1) and All Souls Day
(November 2). These two feasts
are a mixture of ancient Chrisan rites and Meso-American devo ons. They
emphasize the fact that death is a natural
part of the cycle of life and that the deceased
are not forgo en by their loved ones. This is
the basis of the Catholic devo on to the
saints: God is God of the living and not the
dead (Ma hew 22:32), and for this reason
the deceased are not ghosts but rather connue to live in another dimension.
At the end of October and the beginning of
November, families spend me in the cemetery, visi ng the tombs of their rela ves and
friends, washing the headstones, placing bouquets of marigolds, and ligh ng candles. This
custom is similar to that of the Chris an Romans who visited and did the same to the
tombs of martyrs and rela ves in the catacombs.
O en we cannot go back to the tombs of our
loved ones, so the custom of the altars of the
dead has become important in our churches
and homes. Many La nos construct and
adorn small altars and dedicate them to the
souls of their loved ones who have died. On
the altars are found decorated colored paper,
photographs of the deceased, religious ar cles, food, drink, and other things that the deceased enjoyed during their lives. For deceased children, toys and stuffed animals are
added. These altars are tes mony to the fact
that deceased Chris ans do not forget us and
we do not forget them either. The love of God
unites us forever.
Durante el mes de octubre, en México y otros
países la noamericanos se preparan para celebrar el Día de Todos los Santos (1 Noviembre) y el Día de los Muertos (2 Noviembre).
Estas dos fiestas cris anas se mezclaron con
an guos ritos y devociones mesoamericanas.
iglesias y hogares.

THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Mercy is the great equalizer
“Mercy that is truly Christian is also the most perfect
incarnation of ‘equality’ between people,” wrote Pope John Paul II in his
encyclical Rich in Mercy. Our compassion compels us to see the dignity of
persons in need. They become lovable simply because they are. Despite any
faults, poor choices, weaknesses, or circumstances beyond their control,
those in need are worthy of alms (from the Greek word for mercy)—for
Christ’s sake. Strive to see in others what Jesus saw in tax collectors, sinners, and the least among us: the face of God.
TODAY’S READINGS: Wisdom 11:22-12:2; 2 Thessalonians 1:11-2:2;
Luke 19:1-10 (153)
“And you overlook people’s sins that they may repent. For you
love all things that are.”
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4
MEMORIAL OF CHARLES BORROMEO, BISHOP
Renewal is never out of season
Saint Charles Borromeo was an instrument of the Holy Spirit in helping to
keep the church on course through needed reforms in the 16th century. Had
he been a participant in the Second Vatican Council rather than the Council of
Trent, he may have contributed to the former council’s similar insight: “Christ
summons the church, as she goes her pilgrim way, to that continual reformation of which she always has need. If . . . there have been deficiencies in
moral conduct or in church discipline, . . . these should be set right at the
opportune moment and in the proper way” (Decree on Ecumenism).
TODAY’S READINGS: Romans 11:29-36; Luke 14:12-14 (485)
“Brothers and sisters: The gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.”
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5
The feast is prepared
In some Middle Eastern countries, it is customary to send two sets of invitations when a banquet is planned, one before the feast and the other on the
day of the event when a servant is dispatched to announce that everything is
ready. A bit of theater is involved, as guests may at first reject the invitation
so they can be urged to accept. The host is thereby given the “privilege” of
compelling them to come. Scenes like that play out in various stories in the
Bible, with the host of the banquet representing the Lord. The message?
That’s the kind of God we have, one who is willing not once but repeatedly to
invite you to the heavenly banquet. Now is the time to accept!
TODAY’S READINGS: Romans 12:5-16b; Luke 14:15-24 (486)
“When the time for the dinner came, he dispatched his servant to
say to those invited, ‘Come, everything is now ready.’ ”
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6
Expand the network of love
Millions of people worldwide use social media. As never before in
history it’s possible to connect quickly and directly with people
thousands of miles away; it’s as if they’re right next door. Pope
Benedict XVI, the first pope to join Twitter, spoke about the implications of having a world of neighbors: “Today the means of mass
communication have made our planet smaller, rapidly narrowing
the distance between different peoples. . . . Our ability to know
almost instantly about the needs of others challenges us to share
their situation and their difficulties. . . . Our times call for a new readiness to
assist our neighbors . . . .” In our prayers and actions, how will we extend
love and service to our neighbors across the globe today?
TODAY’S READINGS: Romans 13:8-10; Luke 14:25-33 (487)
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7
Who are we to judge?
For Roman Christians in the Early Church, controversy swirled around the
observance of Jewish food laws. Emotions ran high on both sides—those
who felt the laws should be observed and those who felt freed from the old
strictures. Saint Paul took no side. Instead he asks, “Why then do you judge
your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of God.” Sound
familiar? Pope Francis had a similar response regarding those who are often
marginalized in our day: “If they accept the Lord and have goodwill,” said
Francis, “who am I to judge them?” Embrace your brothers and sisters and
keep the judgments to God.
TODAY’S READINGS: Romans 14:7-12; Luke 15:1-10 (488)
“So then each of us shall give an account of himself to God.”
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 8
High fidelity marks the good steward
When you hear the word stewardship in church, you might start bracing yourself for the appeal for money that usually follows! But good stewardship is
about much more. It means being faithful to your relationship with the one
who has entrusted you with all the riches in your life—your talents, health
and energy, your loved ones and livelihood. Stewardship at root is a relationship of fidelity, of keeping trust with the One who has given you life. Are you
ready to put your time, talent, and treasure in service to the gospel? Only
then will you be called a good steward.
TODAY’S READINGS: Romans 15:14-21; Luke 16:1-8 (489)
“Prepare a full account of your stewardship.”
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 9
FEAST OF THE DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA
Keep building the kingdom
The Lateran Basilica, the cathedral of Rome and one of Catholicism’s four
“major” basilicas—all located in Rome—got its name from the ancient
Roman family, the Laterani, on whose land it was built. In the Catholic world
a basilica is a church building of special significance, but the term ultimately
comes from a type of Roman building put up at the government’s expense to
house public events. Palestinian Jews adopted this form for the first synagogues, and early Christians in turn used it for services. The next time you’re
in a house of worship, remember that just as churches are built on what came
before, your faith is part of a temple built on the gospel of Jesus.
TODAY’S READINGS: Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9, 12; 1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-
17; John 2:13-22 (671)
“No one can lay a foundation other than the one that is there,
namely, Jesus Christ.”
