to America’s First Vacation Land, following a tradition that
started in the 1800’s when travelers discovered a world of
natural beauty that awaited them, far from the crowds of
the big cities.
The vistas and sites that inspired the Hudson River School
of Painters, our 1874 Lighthouse and the oldest surviving
Dutch House in the Hudson Valley are just some of the many
attractions that still link us to our rich historic past.

The beauty of the Catskills’ heights and
graceful waterfalls along with the placid
landscape of the Hudson Valley provide
great opportunities for exploring the
county's natural splendor. With so many
choices, it can be difficult to decide which
highlights to visit first. Listed here are
some of the best short walks and hikes in
Greene County.
Diamond Notch Falls: Among the most
pleasant spots in the eastern United
States, this 15-foot fall is a hidden gem.
Matched with a cascade that will one day
rob the falls of their water, the beautiful
scene results from the West Kill’s efforts to
erode the mountainsides. High mountains
loom around the stream valley, creating a
cooler climate and a remote atmosphere.
To reach the falls, drive to the eastern end
of Spruceton Valley along County Road 6
(off State Route 42 north of Deep Notch).
An old roadbed continues east of the parking area, heading for Diamond Notch,
which separates Hunter and Westkill
Mountains. Diamond Notch Falls are
located about three-quarters of a mile
from the trailhead. The walk to Diamond
Notch, about another two and a half miles
round trip, is scenic as well.

Pratt's Rocks: In the mid-1800’s, Zadock
Pratt ran one of the largest leather tanneries in the United States. A prideful person,
Pratt served two terms in the U.S.
Congress. He was an avid breeder of prized
horses and dogs. To immortalize himself
and his loves, Pratt hired stonecutters to
shape the rocks overlooking the
Schoharie Valley east of Prattsville.From
the parking area, located along New York
Route 23, about one mile west of its intersection with Route 23A, the trail leads to
a picnic area and kiosk with background
information about Pratt. A series of interwoven trails follow a moderate grade to
the carvings. Above the carvings, the trail
continues for a short distance leading to
a series of southeast facing ledges with
great views of the Schoharie Valley,
Bearpen and Vly mountains.
Guided Tours
Blackdome Mtn. Guide Service
PO Box 71, East Jewett, NY 12424
589-9159
Offers guided hikes, snowshoeing, horse
pack trips and big game hunting on horse
back for one day or more. Guided hunts on
foot or horseback for White Tail Deer and
Black Bear, Nov. - Dec. Turkey on foot, Oct.,
Nov., and May.
Kaaterskill Falls: At 260 feet, this twotiered fall is the highest cascading waterfall in New York State. First publicized
in the early 1800’s, this fall attracted
tourists, painters and poets. Formed by a
combination of glacial erosion and the
interplay of two different types of rock,
the waterfall is a product of the water,
ice and rock that have manipulated Lake
Creek's stream bed.
Parking for the half-mile trail begins onetenth mile west of the horseshoe bend on
Route 23A at Bastion Falls. The trail follows the stream through a forest of sugar
maple, American beech, yellow birch and
hemlock trees. The clove’s steep walls trap
moisture and limit light. Although rocky,
the route is not difficult. The trail ends at
the fall’s base.
Newman's Ledge and the Catskill
Mountain House site: In the mid and late
1800’s this area was among the premier
resorts in the new world. The Catskill
Mountain House was a summer retreat
for European nobility and America’s nouveau riche. The fantastic vistas from the
hotel’s front steps overlooked fifty miles
of the Hudson Valley and into New
England. The view and hotel became the
inspiration for everything for wood carvings to landscape masterpieces.
Although the mountain house is gone, this
area is readily accessible. From the beach
parking area at North Lake State Park (a
day use fee is required), follow the signs
and head up the dirt road to the mountain house site. After returning to the
parking area, follow the Escarpment Trail
(blue markers) north for about a quartermile. At this point the trail wanders onto
a high ledge overlooking the Hudson
Valley. The view is incredible. On a day
with good air quality Mt. Greylock in
Massachusetts and the Green Mountains
in Vermont are visible. Directly east, in
Massachusetts, rises Mt. Everett. The
Escarpment Trail continues north to
many other fine vistas including Sunset
Rock, Artists Point and North Point.
CAUTION
Outdoor recreation activities are by their
very nature potentially hazardous and contain risk. All participants in such activities

To reach the top of the falls, continue along
Route 23A west to the town of Haines Falls.
Make a right onto North/South Lake road.
Follow to Laurel House Lane. Park at the
end of Laurel House Lane and walk
straight down the beaten path where a
view worth seeing is waiting for you.

Fishing and Hunting – The Greener Side of the Catskills
With roots extending back to the exploration of our beautiful Hudson River Valley in the late 1600’s,
Greene County’s varied fishing opportunities are still to be ranked at the top of any angler’s list. Veteran trout
anglers are always lured back to our streams by the chance to sample the very same fishing enjoyed and
immortalized by Art Flick in his bible for the trout fisherman — “The Streamside Guide”. We have over 50
wild trout streams encompassing 221 miles of storybook fishing: the East Kill, Catskill, Schoharie and Ten
Mile creeks offer 26 miles of fishing access, where brook, brown and rainbow trouts abound.
The world-famous Hudson River, situated on the eastern border of the county, provides the perfect setting for the black bass fisherman. Thanks to the river’s super-abundance of fish life, with more than 76 species
calling it home, largemouth bass have plenty on which to forage and their growth rate is not exceeded elsewhere in New York State. Almost every weekend between May and October, Greene County hosts a bass fishing
tournament, at the state, regional or national level with the world’s largest fishing organization, the Bass
Angler’s Sportsmen’s Society (B.A.S.S.) visiting our shores with their tournament trail on multiple occasions.

Everything from rabbits, grouse, turkey, pheasants and other
small game, to bear and white-tailed deer roams our fields and forest.
In fact when it comes to hunting big game, Greene County is one of
the few counties in the upstate region where the deer and bear harvest
has remained consistent. In addition, with the Hudson River and our
many lakes and ponds lying in a direct line with the Atlantic Flyway,
you wont find a better place to hunt ducks and geese.

If you have ever sat around listening to the oldtimers describe the wild game of yesteryear chances are they
were reminiscing about Greene County. Often referred to as

covers more than 250,000 acres of state land, 64,000 of which
lies within our borders, Greene County offers the hunter a
cornucopia of opportunities.
