January 12th, 2016 marked the 6year anniversary of the 7.0 magnitude
earthquake which killed nearly 250,000 people and completely devastated the
country's infrastructure. Haiti was battered, but not broken. Over the past
several years, J/P HRO and hundreds of other governmental and non
governmental organizations have helped Haitians recover, rebuild, and
revitalize their country. More than anything else, what has emerged is a model
of Haitians being empowered to help themselves. As our staff has become over
95% Haitian, the anniversary of the earthquake is a moment to reflect on the

loss of family and friends, but also the progress that has taken place, and what
we have to look forward to. We are grateful for the strength of our organization
and its employees— our hard work born from rubble. What we have discovered
in Haiti is that from that rubble, anything is possible. On Saturday the 9th of January, Hollywood once again came together to support
Founder and Chairman of the Board Sean Penn and J/P Haitian Relief
Organization at the 5th Annual Help Haiti Home Gala at the Montage in Los
Angeles. $7 million was raised. Hollywood and its Alist moguls and stars stood
with coHosts Bryan Lourd and Sean & Alexandra Parker to shine a light and
raise muchneeded funds. Anderson Cooper was the night's Master of
Ceremonies. French Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development, and Energy
Segolene Royal, and Bill Evans of the Petionville Club in Haiti were the night's
Distinguished Honorees. Those in attendance included Madonna (who also performed “La Vie En Rose”),
Leonardo DiCaprio, Justin Bieber, Lana Del Rey, Brad Paisley, Jason
Segel, Pamela Anderson, Patricia Arquette, Garcelle Beauvais, Rebecca & Eric
Dane, Brian Grazer, Scott Hamilton, Emile Hirsch, Michael Mann, Kyle
MacLachlan, the Fugees’ Pras Michel, Soleil Moon Frye, Kevin Nealon, Mark
Ruffalo, Garry Shandling, David Spade, Patrick Stewart, Lars Ulrich, Suki
Waterhouse, Rachel Zoe, and Jimmy JeanLouis all came out to support. A live
auction, facilitated by Sotheby's Andrea Fiuczynski included: a trip to Haiti with
Sean Penn and President Bill Clinton, a Rachel Zoe curated fashion package, and
Madonna's touring ukulele. J/P HRO's new US Ambassadors Jolene Rapino,
Tracie Hamilton, and Soleil Moon Frye all spoke passionately about their
experiences in Haiti. The night concluded with a rousing performance by Tom Petty
and the Heartbreakers. Special thanks to presenting sponsors Lynne and Marc
Benioff, and our other generous sponsors The Parker Foundation, Salesforce,
Variety, and CAA. J/P HRO is proud to announce that Sean Penn has selected development
expert Ann Young Lee to replace him as the Chief Executive Officer of J/P
HRO. Ann Young Lee brings almost 15 years of experience in humanitarian
response and development to the team. She spent 20062012 in Haiti,
managing programs as Country Director of Global Communities. Recently, she
served as the lead on urban humanitarian response and the private sector
section liaison at the United Nations for the World Humanitarian Summit
(WHS). In her first address to our supporters, Ann stressed her focus going
forward, saying "We are determined that we will never become complacent; for
us, relief will never be 'business as usual.' JP HRO will continue to push
groundbreaking programming that empower the people of Haiti as they build
the future that they want for themselves." Please help us in welcoming Ann.
Photos of the Month:
Progress is being made every day in Delmas 32. Above are before and after
photos of one month's work on a job site dedicated to sustainable housing for
disenfranchised people. The houses are now nearing completion, and family
are preparing to return to homes they can count on. This housing unit is one of
many in this section of town, and is a part of our construction partnership with
the World Bank. Photo Credit: Liam Storrings
