Aurora long-range patrol aircraft crews from 14 Wing
Greenwood and 19 Wing Comox recently completed a “missionrehearsal-through-simulation” exercise to prepare Exercise
Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC). RIMPAC, the world’s largest
international maritime exercise, is held every two years in and
around the Hawaiian Islands.
The virtual exercise was another step in the Royal Canadian
Air Force’s initiatives to use advances in modelling and simulation technology to improve its training and readiness, as well
as increase its operational output.
“This was the first large-scale simulation exercise aimed at
preparing members of the maritime patrol and reconnaissance
community for RIMPAC,” said Colonel Iain Huddleston, the
commander of 14 Wing.
“Our crews continue to draw great benefits from simulation
exercises such as this one. SIMEX 1401 – Virtual RIMPAC
– provided our crews with opportunities to enhance their airborne leadership, team-building and communications skills,
and prepare for the challenging intelligence, surveillance and
reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare missions they will
encounter during RIMPAC 2014.”
The 12-day simulation exercise took place “virtually” in two of
the RIMPAC strike group operational areas, located southwest
of the Hawaiian Islands.
After they received their mission briefing, exercise participants
from 407 Long Range Patrol Squadron,19 Wing, and 404 Long
Range Patrol and Training Squadron, 405 Long Range Patrol
Squadron, and the Maritime Proving and Evaluation Unit, 14
Wing; were challenged to complete realistic missions. They were
working in a complex warfare environment that included ships,
submarines and aircraft acting as friendly or opposing forces.
In the virtual training world, they joined a task group at sea
and built and maintained the recognized maritime picture, using
their surveillance equipment to detect, intercept, identify, record
and analyze sources of electromagnetic energy for immediate

threat recognition. Working
with friendly submarines,
they also conducted several
combined anti-submarine exercises – known as CASEX –
hunting submarines belonging
to the opposing forces.
“This simulated exercise
helped bring the fleet to a
high level of readiness,” said
Huddleston. “Crews practiced
operating in direct support to a
task group at sea and successfully achieved interoperability
in an intensive joint communications environment.
“They improved their ability
to search, locate, track and
report subsurface contacts of
interest and adapted rapidly to
the different exercise injects
introduced by the 404 Squadron exercise staff.”
The exercise participants
conducted the mission rehearsal training using devices: the operational mission
simulator (OMS) acquired with
the Auroras in 1980, and the
modernized procedures crew
trainer (PCT) purchased in
2012. The OMS, which was
upgraded in 2008, replicates
the tactical compartment of
the CP140 Aurora. Air crews
use it to exercise proven tactics, techniques and procedures. Staff members can
provide full scenario replays
after each individual mission
and selected 3-D animation
replays during the debriefing
at the end of the exercise. The
newer PCT is an advanced
reconfigurable tactical crew
trainer built under the Aurora
Incremental Modernization
Project (AIMP).
Fourteen of Canada’s 18
Auroras are being modernized
and their life span extended
under Block III of the AIMP
and two other programs, the
Aurora Structural Life Extension Project and the Aurora
Extension Proposal. These enhancements and modifications
will extend the operational
effectiveness of the modernized Aurora to 2030 and make
it one of the best intelligence,
surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft available. The
next stage of upgraded and
state-of-the-art avionics and
missions systems will add
three new capabilities to the
aircraft: Link 16 Datalink,
beyond line of sight satellite
communications capability
and an improved self-defence
system.
“The Aurora community
has a long history of supporting operational training
through the use of advanced
simulation. Since we acquired
the OMS with our fleet of
Auroras in 1980, this training
device has delivered yeoman
service,” said Captain Craig
Jorgensen from the policy
section of the Directorate of
Air Simulation and Training
Captain Mathieu Kuhn, a navigation communications officer with 404 Long Range
Patrol and Training Squadron, assesses incoming information and, as the mission crew
commander, gives direction to the crew to complete the aircraft mission during SIMEX
2014 – Virtual RIMPAC at 14 Wing Greenwood.
Master Corporal R.Wilson, 14 Wing Imaging
in Ottawa.
“The introduction of the
PCT provides a greatly enhanced ability to train the
significantly wider spectrum
of capabilities delivered in
the AIMP-updated Aurora.
This training capability will
be further improved with the
delivery of a new OMS later
this year, which will support
with greatly enhanced fidelity
and simulation capability the
full-crew mission training for
the updated Block III aircraft.”
The upcoming introduction
of the Royal Canadian Air
Force’s new simulation strategy will further refine the Air
Force’s use of simulation. The
strategy will coordinate the
introduction of new training
technology within the service,
ensuring that new devices can
be linked together to form a
common virtual training en-
vironment.
“The RCAF will build a virtual world that allows training
devices to connect with each
other and with comparable
constructs of our joint and
coalition allies,” continued
Jorgensen. “Within this virtual
world, the Aurora will be able
to conduct training and mission rehearsal in conjunction
with partners and allies exactly
as they do in a real world exer-

cises and operations.”
Some of the most critical training tasks for crews
operating the Block III Aurora centre on interoperability and communications, he
explained.
“To be effective during operations, Aurora crews must
be able to effectively communicate and work with Canadian Armed Forces maritime
helicopters, ships and submarines, as well as with the air,
sea and land platforms used
by our allies.
“Ensuring that the air force’s
training devices can be linked
together and linked with the
training devices used by our
partners will help ensure that
our crews continue to deliver
robust air power.”
The successful completion
of the first RIMPAC SIMEX at
14 Wing May 5 demonstrated
the importance of simulation
training for modern and effective military forces.
As the Royal Canadian Air
Force works to put in place
a fully-integrated, optimized
training system that mixes
live, virtual and constructive
training by 2025, “missionrehearsal-through-simulation”
exercises like this one underline how training devices
linked together to form a common virtual training environment are critical to maintaining the RCAF’s high level of
operational excellence.

NO JOB TOO SMALL

The two diaries are small
enough to fit into a back pocket

Inside, the pages are crisp and
the writing is easily legible,
rather remarkable, considering
they date back almost 100 years
to the killing fields of the First
World War.
The journals were kept by
Sergeant John Eric Forbes of the

22 of the bloodiest months of
the 1914-18 war. They now
belong to his son, 77-year-old
Murray Forbes of Dartmouth,
who is donating them to the

for its exhibition, “The Road to

history, will mark the centennial
of the First World War and the
major role Canada played in the
Allied victory. In addition, it will
acknowledge the 75th anniversary of the start of the Second
World War.

to commemorate the 1914-18
war, a conflict which claimed
16 million lives, including those
of more than 66,000 Canadians.
When war broke out in August
1914, 22-year-old Eric Forbes of
Dartmouth was an engineering
student at Queen’s University in
Kingston, Ontario. He was also
a member of the university’s militia unit and quickly volunteered
for active service overseas, as
did his entire class. After training at Valcartier, Quebec, the
young men were assigned to
the 6th Field Company, Canadian Engineers,
and dispatched
to England in
the fall of 1915
as part of the
First Division
of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. They
were bound for
the bloody battlefields of Belgium
and Northern France.
As army engineers, Eric and
his comrades were responsible
for repairing and maintaining
trenches, railway lines and other
infrastructure, including at the
front, where the fighting was
raging. Murray says his father
rarely talked about the horrors
he encountered. Only once did
he share a bad experience, ac-

cording to his son. His father and
another engineer were returning
from the front lines and, believing they were safe, began walking along the top of the trench.
“The other chap was in front
and Dad was one step behind,”
Murray says. “The other chap
was shot in the back by an enemy sniper. Dad was, literally,
just a footstep away from being
killed.”
Eric‘s entries in his diaries include details of basic day-to-day
military housekeeping chores
and training activities, along
with unflattering comments
about the rain, the cold and
the mud, plus accounts
of the constant
fighting with
rats for rations
and the torment
of infestations
of lice. There’s
even mention of
the first time a
new weapon – the
tank - was ever
used in battle, an
event Eric witnessed in September 1916. The entries provide
such a fascinating glimpse into
the life of an average Canadian
soldier, a number were quoted
in author Pierre Berton’s book,
Vimy.
In addition to the diaries,
Murray has his father’s maps of
Northern France and Belgium,
showing the criss-cross routes
taken by his
unit as it was
ordered into
action at various parts of the
front. The sites
where Eric served
are names etched
forever in the Canadian
consciousness: the Somme, Ypres and, of course, Vimy
Ridge, where, for the first time
in the war, all four Canadian divisions serving in Europe fought
as a single force.
The collection of memorabilia
also includes 150 photos Murray’s father took while completing his training in Quebec and
during his time at the front.
Murray is amazed at the quality
of the small, black-and-white
snaps.
“For the camera equipment
of the time, and the film, these
photos are remarkably well
preserved,” he says.
And, Murray has a collection of letters his father wrote
home during his time abroad,
plus three hours of tapes of
him talking about his wartime
experiences. The recordings
were done in 1984, four years
before his father’s death at the
age of 96.
Eric Forbes served two years
with the Canadian Engineers
until, finally, frustrated with the
squalor and filth, he obtained a
transfer to train as a pilot with
the Royal Flying Corps, the forerunner of the Royal Air Force. By
the time he gained his wings and
was ready for his first posting,
the war was over.
Amazingly, that wasn’t the
end of his service to king and
country. Eric volunteered for
the RCAF when the Second
World War began in September
1939. He held the rank of flight
engineer and served as a construction engineering officer in
Debert, near Truro, until the end
of hostilities.
Murray, a retired Environment
Canada employee and RCAF
veteran himself, is making copies of every item of his father’s
wartime memorabilia, transcribing the diaries and the audio
tapes. He plans to loan all the
originals to “The Road to Vimy
and Beyond” exhibition and,
when it’s over, he’ll donate them
permanently to the museum.
He surveys the extensive collection spread out on the table.
“I’m pretty proud of the old
fellow,” says the son.

Kenzie’s friends
Local friends of Kenzie Markey will be pleased to hear she’s out of hospital, crutching
around in a friend’s RV in Northern British Columbia as she continues to recuperate
from a skydiving accident April 6 in Arizona. Greenwood and Middleton Subway owner
Lorrie Penny, who hired Kenzie many years ago as a 16-year-old staffer, organized a
May 15 fundraiser which raised $3,000 to help Markey with American medical bills
and on-going costs. Penny presented Markey’s dad, Joe, and aunt Maureen Markey,
a staff member at Greenwood’s Valley Credit Union, which is coordinating a benefit
account at its branch; with a cheque May 23.

They walked, ran and drove
from one end of Nova Scotia to
the other on a wish.
A dozen Royal Canadian Navy
personnel from HMCS Halifax
put some miles on for the Children’s Wish Foundation, starting a cross-province challenge
May 11 in Sydney and wrapping
up May 19 in Yarmouth.
“This is the best thing I’ve
ever done in my military career,
bar none” said Petty Officer
Second Class Jay DeWolfe
May 18, just after a breakfast
fuel-up hosted by Betty Hebb
and friends at Farmer’s Family Diner in Millville. “This is
a chance to bond with people
off of a work schedule, and
really it’s an outstanding opportunity: you get to see and
meet the Wish children and
their families.”
This was DeWolfe’s third
Wish run (his two previous
covered Prince Edward Island).
Only three of this year’s participants were back from last year.
Their goal was an ambitious
120 kilometres per day, covered in two van relays. DeWolfe
noon to 5 p.m., includes games,
bouncers, live music, a Discovery Centre Science display, a
visit from the Apple Blossom
Royal Party, petting zoo, Milo

dog agility demonstration, educational tractor tours and more!

Wish Foundation volunteer Betty Hebb, right, hosted breakfast for HMCS Navy runners
at her Millville restaurant May 18, as they set out on their cross-province fundraiser.
S.Keddy
said seeing people along the
route, stopping at schools and
meeting businesses and organizations along the way who
all supported their fundraising
efforts was special, and especially encouraging when the
team took in an evening movie
May 14 in Truro – and thieves
broke into their decaled vans
and stole $500 of travel fund
money.
“That was unfortunate –
these things happen in life,”
DeWolfe said. “It was a blow to
the team’s morale, and it made
us mad, but Truro really rallied
around. We had lots of donors
afterwards on the road, and
everyone was speaking of it as
they were helping us.”
With road fundraising, extra
support and corporate sponsors helping the team along,
they’re hoping to reach a
$40,000 goal. Last year, HMCS
raised $30,000. Every $10,000
funds one child’s wish.
That’s great news to Hebb,
who collected $215 for the
sailors from a tea party, and
presented it to them at her
restaurant. Volunteers with
the Annapolis Valley SubChapter of the Children’s Wish
Foundation helped make three
children’s wishes happen last
year, and there are two more
in the making.

birthday acknowledged. The

“He is just so kind, like

air when you see him here,”
said Judy Hiltz. “He knew
my father and my father-inlaw – you can tell everyone

Ruth Burgess added
Hawkins “talks to everyone.
He’s an interesting man.”
Hawkins, born in Charlottetown, joined the Pictou
Highlanders September 5,
1939 as an infantry member.
“I was 20, just jobbing
around, not much doing,”
he says. He went on with the
Highlanders to overseas service, and remembers guarding a prisoner exchange in
1943. He finished service in
1947 as a sergeant, opting
out of the military “when they
gave me a posting I didn’t
like.”
He and his wife, Thelma,
who he married in 1942,
moved to South Farmington
here in the Valley in 1952,
and Hawkins ran a garage in
Wilmot (where the Frenchies
is now) for 20 years. He went
on to teach mechanics at vocational school in Middleton.
The couple had one son, now
in Lunenburg, and Hawkins
has two granddaughters and a
great-granddaughter. Thelma
passed away three years ago.
That’s what spurred his
thrice-weekly exercise outings
at the Greenwood gym. It’s a
way to get out and about and
keep active.
“It is better than sitting

On behalf of our son, daughter, and myself we
would like to thank so many kind and wonderful
friends and neighbours who brought food and hugs
during this most trying time. A heartfelt acknowledgement for the care and compassion shown by the Middleton
Funeral Home, especially Gary Marshall and the support given
by the Kingston Legion branch 98 in performing the tribute
service. The attendance of the 14 Wing Firefighters in memory
of a fallen comrade and the kind words of Dr. Clark of the VRH,
also helped ease the sorrow of our loss. The outpouring of love,
support and condolences from the community was greatly
appreciated from the family and will always be remembered.

Fun By The Numbers
Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid,
broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers
1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can
appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out
the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric
clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name,

NOTICE TO RESIDENTS
patrick’s puzzle
The Municipality of the County of Kings, Department
of Engineering & Public Works wishes to advise
customers of the Greenwood Water Utility that water
mains and fire hydrant flushing will occur from May 5,
2014 to May 30, 2014.
As a result of this work, customers may experience
low water pressure or discolored water during this
period. This condition may cause staining of clothing
during washing. Customers should flush their own
lines by allowing the water to run for about ten
minutes or until water clears.
Flushing of the water system is conducted each year
to maintain and improve water quality in the utility’s
piping.
The Municipality apologizes for any inconvenience.
