ALUMNI PROFILE
Proud young engineering alumna is already a successful mentor
A descendant of builders, Araceli Carlos says her OSU education left
her well-prepared to perform the duties of an engineer. PHOTO BY
ANN KINKLEY
Araceli Carlos, ‘08, likes to be “up and about — to get things done.”
The determined young engineer — raised in Springfield but now working in Salem —
already knew quite a bit about construction when she arrived at OSU. Family members
had been builders for generations.
“My grandfather was a builder too; he passed away six years ago,” she said. ”He was
so wise. He never had a degree, but he built so many things. He was very inspiring.
“Being a builder is great — but I wanted to do more.”
So, with encouragement from a high school teacher Carlos found OSU’s construction
engineering management program in the School of Civil and Construction Engineering. It
was a good fit.
“It was just me and the guys,” she said of her study partners. “I was the only woman
who graduated that year.”
She was the first Latina in the department’s 43-year history to receive a CEM degree.
She already has encouraged a friend from high school to follow in her footsteps, and this
year Vanessa Vazquez became the second Latina to complete the program — bringing
much joy and pride to her young mentor.
“We all knew each other in the CEM department and we still see each other in the
industry,” she said. “I get calls about projects and it is often one of my classmates and I
say: ‘Who is this? Is this my friend?’”
She and her husband live in Salem, where she works at Carlson Testing Inc. Carlos is
grateful for OSU classes that prepared her to hit the ground running.
“We do testing of concrete, buildings and roads,” she said. “The soils testing I did in
class is exactly what we are doing in my company.
“Another thing that OSU implemented in every class,” she said, “is that OSU graduates
are supposed to be the most honest, hardworking and ethical workers you can hire. It’s
because of the professors. When they talked about when they worked in the industry,
when they talked about what went wrong, they always said: ‘Integrity. At the end, that
will always be the greatest thing.’
“That’s what I remember. When you go to an interview people are always telling you,
‘We love OSU graduates.’ It’s nice to hear that.”

Meet 4-month-old Drew Sexton, son of Sarah and
Andrew Sexton of County Kildare, Ireland. Yes,
the wee lad is a native of the Emerald Isle, but
we think he looks quite sharp in orange and black.
Sarah Sexton was pregnant with Drew last summer
when she worked with Jill Eiland, ’73, manager of
corporate affairs for Intel Corp. in Beaverton and
an OSU Foundation trustee, while Eiland was on a
job exchange in Ireland. Not one to miss a chance to
spread the good word about her alma mater, upon
news of the birth Eiland sent off some appropriate
baby gifts and was rewarded with some snapshots.

OSU-Cascades graduate brings talent to promotional short films
Wes Coughlin and a partner devised a system pairing a toy helicopter with a
small HD video camera to use in their freelance work, and then started a company to sell the aerial video platforms online. PHOTO BY STEVE GARDNER

Wes Coughlin may be new to the business world only two years after earning a
business degree, but he isn’t new to films.
“I began making films when I was 14 years old,” said the successful maker
of promotional short videos who is also a budding entrepreneur, selling a lowcost aerial camera system mounted on a remote-control toy helicopter. “Once
I started creating videos, I knew it was the path I’d take no matter what I
studied.”
The Redmond native considered attending film school after high school, but
found the cost and far-flung destinations prohibitive. Instead, he opted to stay

close to home and earn a degree from OSU-Cascades in Bend.
“I saw an opportunity to stay in Central Oregon and keep working on videos
while I was in school,” Coughlin said. “A business degree seemed the most
logical choice.”
That degree is being put to good use as Coughlin finds himself at the helm of
a booming business at the age of 24, just two years after graduating college in
2010. The videos he produces — “creative promotional shorts” — are in great
commercial demand.
“I excel at helping people come up with creative, story-driven ideas,” he
said. “I like to make videos that people want to watch, that elicit emotional
responses.”
Along the journey to becoming a successful commercial filmmaker, Coughlin
stumbled into entrepreneurship when he and fellow filmmaker Hans Skjersaa
created a helicopter to carry a camera when the need arose for aerial footage
and no real helicopter was available or in the budget.
Demonstrating the axiom that necessity is the mother of invention, the pair
rigged up a hobbyist remote-controlled helicopter to transport a small HD digital
video camera. After perfecting the design, they found a manufacturer and the
company Xpro Heli (www.xproheli.com) was born.
“For an affordable price, filmmakers can take smooth high quality HD videos
from the air,” Coughlin said. Xpro Heli has achieved $100,000 in sales since
January.
Coughlin’s video work requires skills in editing, compositing, coloring and mo-
tion graphics. He worked for Flick Five Films in Bend for a time, but preferred to
pursue the freedom of freelancing. He has worked through agencies and directly
for clients, including tbd advertising, Deschutes Brewery, The Old Mill District
and American Licorice.
An online portfolio, Wild Lookout (www.wildlookout.com) showcases his
work, much of which is filmed in the beautiful outdoors of Central Oregon. “A
lot of my work features biking and skiing,” he said. In a relatively short time in
the business, he’s advanced to bigger and more challenging jobs.
“It takes practice to know what you need on film so that you’ll have a
successful time back in the editing room,” he said. “Figuring out timing and
scheduling is almost a skill unto itself, especially if you have a sunset or actors
to consider.”
Coughlin’s OSU-Cascades education played a significant part in his success.
“What was so great was the opportunity to rise to the high expectations of
my professors. I enjoyed the process and showing that I am capable, that I can
deliver what is expected of me,” Coughlin said. “Many of my professors had
worked in business, so could provide very real end goals for us to meet.”
Coughlin continues to create his own projects, too, and his short fun bike film
called “Particles” played in the 2012 Bend Bicycle Film Festival in June.
“I’d really like to get into making documentary films,” he said. “I love to
share stories about new and amazing things, about people who’ve discovered or
learned something remarkable.”
