Pastor’s Message
2014 is here and soon we embark on a new adventure with our partners from Peaceful Valley
Community Center! We continue to evolve as “The Church” and to prayerfully consider what
it means to be faithful, active and supportive community members. It hasn’t been easy, there
are lots of things that we wish were more refined and done better and that went more smoothly.
I understand the need for improvement and assure you we are working on ways to enhance our
programs. The encouragement and participation you give as members and supporters is invaluable and I would like to see that continue and expand. We are leading the way in a number of
areas of faith based ministries and it is sometimes hard to keep everything running exactly perfectly. I hope that you all feel positive about our mission and ministry and the direction we are
headed. We have a congregational meeting coming up on January 26th and there will be opportunity to discuss these things … remember, this is your church and we need everyone to pray
and support our ministries and our budget with time and finances. By doing this we respond to
the blessings in our life by working for and blessings others in our midst. There really is no
way to out give God and the abundance with which we are blessed. Together we can, maybe
slowly, but surely nonetheless, move forward and be a shining beacon to our community. All
Saints will continue to grow and be the church and the community center and a place for all to
receive God’s love and hear the blessing of the gospel.
There have been some difficult emotional things these last few weeks with the loss of several
church members and related folks to All Saints. My Dad’s death, along with Janice and Reider,
my good friend Stevie, and Mark’s grandpa, was an especially bitter pill to swallow. Of course
I know all the theological and health related reasons that the world uses to tell us why loved
ones die, and I have all confidence that they are all together with God, but the hard part that
goes on … is that we are left here to deal with the emotional and personal loss. I think that how
we deal with that loss is very much part of our faith journey and am ever more convinced that
we are reliant upon our God for strength and also upon our brothers and sisters in the church.
Together we can continue along the road, with all its hills and valleys, turns and twists and
eventually come to that place of acceptance of the loss and be able to rejoice in the knowledge
that we will someday be in heaven as well. So as we end 2013 and look forward to 2014 I pray
for a blessed year on our way together in God’s kingdom.

ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING
SUNDAY, JANUARY 26TH, 2014
11:45AM
We will be voting on new council members at this time.
It is important that all who are able please plan to attend.
A potluck is scheduled before the meeting so bring your
favorite dish to share.
Laurel and I would like to take this opportunity to say Thank You to our All Saints family! Your love and support for us and our family this past year has been and continues to
be a blessing. We were overwhelmed by the generous Christmas gift ... your care and
concern during my dad's illness and death helped us get through a difficult month ... and
the gift of time away is very appreciated. We give thanks for all that happened in 2013
and we eagerly look forward to 2014, knowing God has already prepared the way.
Peace,
Pastor Alan

"People of Christ, living in community, working in partnership,
doing the stuff of local ministry"
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same spirit,
and there are varieties of service, but the same LORD,
and there are varieties of workings,
but it is the same GOD who inspires them all in every thing.
1 CORINTHIANS 12:4-6
Love the LORD your God with all your heart,
and with all your soul and with all your mind ...
love your neighbor as yourself.
MATTHEW 22:37-40
Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them
in the name of the FATHER, and of the SON, and of the HOLY SPIRIT,
and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you,
and remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
MATTHEW 28:19-20

congregation and in all the world. We seek to proclaim the Gospel
that all may know the depth of God’s love. We thankfully exercise our

Cross Connection
January 2014
God’s Beloved People,
This issue of the Cross Connection will arrive at your mailbox or on your computer sometime
in mid-December, 2013, most likely right around the time of Christmas. In addition, this newsletter carries the news of the synod and calendar for January, 2014, the New Year. What a
unique moment, stretching as it does from the eternal to the day-to-day, from the promise of
Christmas, into the unknown of the new year, the place and time during which the promise will
be realized in-carne, in the flesh, and in time, timely and timeless!
From the Foreward (written by Patrick Keifert) to “Being Promised: Theology, Gift and Practice,” Gregory Walter, (Eerdmans), 2013:
“Making promises is a day-to-day practice and habit. Without promises, life does not
move into the future. Those who refuse to make or to keep their promises frustrate the
work God does with us to build a trustworthy world in everyday ways. The absence or
failure of promise can easily break down the most basic human activities toward a
healthy life for others and oneself.”
Maybe I’m thinking of this because the radio story leading the day’s news had to do with the
financial exigency in Chicago and the threat to thousands of employee pensions, promises
made during a lifetime of work and now threatened by the lack of capacity, or willingness, of
the city to provide such pensions. This comes on the heels of Detroit’s bankruptcy and the
slowly evolving story of other cities in similar binds. Promises made; promises kept or broken.
I’m thinking of this as well because during the retreat with our first call pastors the speaker
asked the bishops to reflect on the central notion that held life, ministry, and our theology together. Without hesitation I answered, “Promise.” We worship a promise-making God!
Christmas is God’s promise time, when into flesh comes God’s participation in our daily lives.
This God is no stranger to time and contingency but enters our time to make it holy and to
make us whole again. We became people of this promise when God’s promises of life were
made to us at the font, promises made on human lips but with divine power and consequence
ever since God’s promise to Abraham and Sarah.
New Year’s Eve will bring with it an invitation to make resolutions for the New Year. If you’re
frustrated at your own capacity for keeping resolutions, how about simply remembering that
you a promised one and into the New Year you bear promise in your very being. You have a
history from Abraham through Jesus and because of your baptismal call your life is full of this
promise. Will you join me in bearing promise into the New Year? So many count on it!
Pastor Martin Wells, Bishop

JOHNSON, Janice Louise (Age 42) Was born on June 7, 1971 in Spokane, WA to
Keith and Patricia Johnson. She was a lifelong resident of Spokane and a 1989 graduate
of Rogers High School. Janice worked in nursing homes as a dietary aid and later as a
certified nursing assistant. Janice dealt with health issues her whole life. She was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of two and was considered one of the first patients to be
cured of this disease. In 1997, Janice was diagnosed with meningioma that made her
life more difficult. This condition pushed her left eye out, grew into her sinus, took the
hearing from her left ear, and created problems with her opening her mouth. While she
was herself slowed down by medical afflictions that never stopped her from lending a
helping hand to whoever needed it. Her positive attitude and sweet demeanor will be
missed by all who knew her. After a yearlong battle with cancer, Janice passed away peacefully in her sleep
on the morning of November 27, 2013, surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her mother,
Patricia; brothers, Brian and Brad; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Janice was preceded in death by her
father, Keith. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorials may be sent to the All Saints Lutheran Church
or Hospice of Spokane.
February 12, 1927 - November 30, 2013 August (Gus) Henry Eschenbacher Jr. was the
youngest son of August Sr. and Katy Eschenbacher. He grew up in a farming family in
Froid Montana where he learned to farm wheat and barley and to raise Cattle. He attended college in Bozeman where he took classes in agriculture and butchering. Gus
married Luella Knick on November 10th 1951. He and his brother Benny took over the
farm from their parents in 1963 when his dad died, and they immediately sold off the cattle because he "always hated those cows." Gus and Luella had four children who all grew
up on the farm until they sold their half of the farm to Gus' brother and moved the family
to Great Falls Montana in 1968. He worked putting in water wells and then he and Luella
owned a small grocery store until 1971 when the store was "accidently" set on fire, by
their youngest son. The family followed their oldest daughter Kathy to Spokane because Gus didn't like the
looks of the apartment building she had moved in to...so he bought another apartment building and fixed it
up so she had a nice place to live. Gus started a contracting business here in Spokane, doing remodeling,
plumbing, electrical, roofing, and siding until 1981. Gus and Luella then became sales representatives for
Giftlines for the next 20 years. In 2002 Gus and Luella moved to Arizona to retire and then moved in with
their daughter Marlene in Yakima in 2012. Gus loved airplanes and flying. He and his brother owned a
Piper Cub plane that they enjoyed flying together. For his 80th birthday he got to take a ride on a WWII
trainer plane which he loved. Gus enjoyed history and traveling, in the early 1950's he took a road trip from
Froid MT with his brother and dad to Mexico, Texas, New Orleans and back. He was a jack of all trades
and great at building and fixing things and enjoyed nothing more than teaching his grandsons how to be
handy-men themselves. His shop was always a mess, and he loved to wake the grandsons up early to come
over and help him with some project. He always enjoyed finding a project and kept on doing them well past
when everyone else thought he should stop. He loved having all of the family together to BBQ and enjoy a
meal. He was often found teasing the kids with stories of chief "Falling Rock," reminding them to "check
their blinker juice" and asking them if they had their spanking yet today? Gus died in Hospice care in
Yakima WA, due to complications from pneumonia after a year of declining health. He had many family,
friends, and little dogs to comfort him. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Luella, daughters; Kathy
Goldthorpe (John), Marlene Davenport, (Richard), Ginger Smith (Larry), and his son, Alan Eschenbacher
(Laurel). His Sisters; Louise Cooper and Helen Coolidge; 8 Grandchildren, and 6 Great-Grandchildren. He
is preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother and 3 sisters. Donations in Gus' honor may be made to All
Saints' Lutheran Church .
