Hanes Valley
TIP: follow flagging, and
cairns.
Keep left in boulder fields.
Carry: 2-3 litre hydration pack, enough fuel for at least 5
hours, cell phone, survival blanket. Wear cap. Record
cell phone number at sign in.
GPS at 15.73 km from Lynn Creek bridge (map: Lynn Headwaters Regional Park)
Getting There
Park at Grouse Mountain. Carpool from Grouse to
Lynn Valley Road to the top and continue into Lynn
Headwaters Regional Park. (Shortcut from Capilano
Rd: turn LEFT on Montroyal and then LEFT on
Braemar, RIGHT on Dempsey, left into park.) Follow
to overflow lot. Take bug spray in summer.
Trailhead

Take stairs down to Varley, head left to small
parking lot near Ranger Cabin.
Lynn Loop Trail to Third Debris Chute





Cross footbridge. At hiker registration, stay left
and take Lynn Loop Trail
Follow Lynn Loop to turnoff (do NOT go up).
Go STRAIGHT to start on Cedars Mill Trail.
You come out at Third Debris Chute (wide
clearing).
Head up to right. Find the trail signs for Norvan
Falls. Turn LEFT (north) on Headwaters Trail.
Headwaters Trail



Follow Headwaters Trail through second growth
forest and along corduroy roads.
Pass turnoff to Coliseum Mountain.
You reach junction for Norvan Falls. Turn LEFT.
To HELI PAD

Cross Lynn Creek on fallen trees: sit and straddle
upper log inching forward.

Watch for EVERY trail marker on trees and
flagging on bushes.
You can start to hear Hanes Creek.
You reach a clearing that has green North Shore
Rescue storage box and a helicopter pad on the
left. Boulder field appears: distance to the top of
boulder field is about 1.5 km and elevation gain is
more than 500 metres.
Norvan Falls

Cross metal suspension bridge. Watch for EVERY
trail marker on trees and flagging on bushes.
Lynn Lake Turnoff
Trail is rugged. At post for Lynn Lake, turn LEFT down
steep hill to start Hanes Valley route.



Climb very steep section. The trail ends and you
reach boulders.
Boulder Fields


This section can take over an hour when hiking.
Have your group SPOT and FOLLOW
FLAGGING AND CAIRNS going from one to the
other. Keep YOUR FOCUS (maybe even stop
chatting!).
KEEP LEFT at boulder field junctions (if there are
two ways to go, do NOT go up to RIGHT).

Caution: When scrambling up, try not to dislodge
small rocks which may hit a person below.
Crown Mountain Junction

You reach some trees.

After a few switchbacks, you reach post for Crown
Mountain Trail.
Crown Mountain Junction

At Crown Mountain junction, go LEFT towards
Goat Mountain and Grouse Mountain gondola.

See some yellow paint on rocks.

The steep trail is rough and muddy and you need to
scramble over rocks.
Chains


Use chains bolted into steep rocks to pull yourself
up.
After uphill climb, you reach a rocky bluff with a
view of Crown Mountain.
Zipline

At Zipline platform, go right and follow the trail
downhill.
To Peak Chalet

The trail widens and becomes an old service road.

Grouse Mountain facilities appear. Check the
grizzly bear enclosure on right.
Follow this road to Grouse Mountain Peak Chalet.
Goat Mountain Junction

At Goat Mountain Trail junction, go RIGHT up a
small hill.

Celebrate with a cold drink, then get a ticket to take the
tram down ($10).

From this point on, follow gondola markers, past
marked junctions for Little Goat Mountain and
Dam Mountain.
(Or take BCMC down and left on Baden-Powell to Lynn
Headwaters.)
