COMMENTS:
There is an additional page in this issue in order to get all the group sheets
in one issue.
Next time we will resume the Georgia county deeds.
This
November issue completes 1982 a little late but now we are caught up.
I
think that ih 1983 the newsletter will finish surveying the land grants of
the remaining states and begin doing the probates, starting with Virginia.
What projects or records would you like to see in the newsletter?
If anyone has sent queries that have not been published, they have been mislaid
by me in these last confused months.
Please forgive any such mixup and send
another copy.
We also want new queries (and repeats if you want to try again).
Enclosed are two family group forms.
Make as many additional copies as you
want.
We would have sent everyone a packet of extras but thought the postage
would be too expensive.
These forms are designed to give lots of space for
source citations.
As you look at the group sheets abstracted in this present
issue, notice how nearly useless the source citations are.
They give very
little proof of how correct the sheets are.
So we designed forms that have
plenty of room to document each fact.
There is also a line for the place of
marriage and death of each Lindsay child.
We hope you will use these forms
to send in your Lindsay lines at least for generations
from the Civil War
backwards.
If you do not want to take the time, then please send the filledin forms you already have.
The newsletter cannot publish lineages unless
you send them in.
Incomplete lineages are perfectly okay.
If everyone will
send Lindsay group sheets to me, I can begin to match the lines and get the
information into the newsletter.
I wrote some long instructions on how to fill out the forms, but Elliott said
he could understand the forms better than my instructions.
Probably the only
two rules everyone should obey are (1) spelling or abbreviating
the months-May, Jne, Jlyor
somesuch--and
(2) documenting
each fact.
The Newsletter seeks to bring together the serious researchers of the
Southern Lindsays in all spellings of Lindsay to untangle the many
branches into their correct families and thus extend the lines back
to the immigrants and their British ancestors.
Although the Newsletter
is concerned with Lindsays born before the Revolution,
it publishes
information tracing such persons to their deaths, even if long after
1775.
The South before the Revolution is defined as all the eastern
U.S. south and west of the Delaware River.
That includes Pennsylvania.
The editor solicits any relevant material--from
short queries, bible
entries, and tombstone inscriptions
to lengthy lineages and analytical
articles discussing
"stonewall" problems.
The editor wants to correspond with

Family
Group Sheets At The Salt Lake
Genealogical Library
While the family group sheets in the Salt Lake Genealogical
Library are
not to be trusted alone, they do provide clues.
Like any genealogy,
the sheets
should be tested and verified.
As an example, there are several sheets submitted by Oscar Joseph Lindsey, 1615 Cogswell, El Monte, California.
These
sheets cite the Lindsey Family by Hugh Lindsey, and a History of Frederick
County, Virginia by H. Dobbs.
Can anyone say if either of these books really
exists? I am especially worried that none of the standard bibliographies
to
county histories lists a Frederick history by H. Dobbs.
Given the astounding
series of early birth dates right down to the day, and given the fugitive nature
of Hugh Lindsey and H. Dobbs, the worm of doubt sometimes enters my heart as
to the veracity of these sheets.
Can anyone banish that doubt?
To be included here, the sheets had to have a person born by 1810 and
have some Southern connection.
Sheets composed solely from 1850 censuses were
not included.
Where a birthplace is not known, the sheets often show a known
residence, thus "of Wythe Co., Va."
Birthdates
are sometimes estimated from a
marriage date by subtracting about 24 years for grooms and 21 years for brides.
All the sources listed on the group sheets have been copied but not checked
except in a few cases where incomprehensible
citations have been expanded a
little in square brackets.
