TROX - The art of handling air
The art of handling air
……
The art of handling air
……
Good air is a factor in your quality of life. Whether outside in the
open air or in an enclosed space, we only feel truly well in the fresh air.
Air, the elixir of life, lets us breathe freely. It is invigorating, inspiring,
and gives us the energy to live and work.
TROX understands the art of competently handling air like no
other company. In close collaboration with demanding customers from
around the globe, we have successfully manufactured leading technologies and marketed systems and components for indoor ventilation and
air conditioning. We are consistently expanding upon this position by
means of intensive research and development activities.
Heinz Trox
The individual is the focus at TROX: as a customer with visionary
ideas and technological goals: as a motivated and qualified company
employee, as a responsible decision-maker at the management level
and, last but not least, as a human being who would like to live and
work in well-ventilated spaces.
Since our corporation was founded, we have stood by this philosophy
and vouched for our good name. Indicative of our solution-minded
approach, it has created our distinctive customer base and thus become
the source of our company’s success.
Headquarters Neukirchen-Vluyn,
Germany
On the following pages, we would like to introduce TROX and its
extensive product range. Please, take us at our word by challenging us
with ambitious tasks and placing trust in our competency and customer
oriented thinking! Share the experience: The art of handling air!

The individual is the deciding factor
……
The individual remains the deciding factor in all
that TROX undertakes. The individual, by virtue of his
or her visions, wishes, needs, abilities, and knowlege,
defines the goals that TROX pursues carefully and
deliberately.
TROX is an owner-led company with horizontal
hierarchies in which the individual has decisionmaking powers. Consistency, reliability, and a mature
feeling of responsibility for customers, employees and
the environment have been the pillars of the TROX
GROUP company politics for decades.
It is the customers of TROX that decide how the
company will act on their behalf. They set goals based
upon their well-being as well as their architectural
and technological visions, and TROX in turn assists
them in realising those goals. The customer-oriented
corporate leadership has made TROX what it is today:
a world-wide and effective partner for those
demanding ventilation and air conditioning solutions
for all types of buildings.
Each and every employee contributes to the success
of the company in that they earn the customers’ trust
with their motivation and competence, and then they
confirm that trust day after day. The targeted training
and continued education of our employees, as well as
their lasting job satisfaction, are thus important
concerns of TROX management.

In a small space of 110 square metres at his living
quarters in Neukirchen-Vluyn, Heinrich Trox began
the production of diffusers together with his brother
Friedrich in 1951. Within a few years, this garage
start-up became a successful medium-sized company,
which is still family-owned today.

A tradition of innovation
……
The history of the company began with an innovation:
the specialisation in components for ventilation
technology. In the air conditioning industry, which
was still quite young in 1951, this was a revolutionary
decision. Trailblazing inventions have since marked
the rise of the company to the leading position in
marketing and technology. Innovations themselves
are tradition with TROX. The company holds over 200
patents and registered designs in ventilation and air
conditioning technology.
The systematic research and development of the
individual product groups enjoys increasing expansion
based on project-related development contracts.
With its customer-specific solutions, TROX sets an
innovating standard and, with that in mind,
continues to enter new and lucrative markets and
maintain sustainable business opportunities. As a
result, TROX, since the introduction of the first
ceiling induction diffusers in the 1980s, has been the
leading supplier of these multifaceted products in
Europe.

Exciting solutions
……
……
In close collaboration with TROX’s customers, the
“Architecture and Indoor Climate“ team develops
solutions and supports architects and consultants with
the development of optimum indoor ventilation
concepts for new buildings and refurbishment projects.
Whether it is a matter of ventilation systems for
laboratories, the connection of fire dampers to control
and communication systems, the development of
design-oriented air-water systems, or the integration
of decentralised ventilation units into façades: the
path that TROX takes with its customers has been
proven time and again.
The earlier TROX engineers are integrated in the design
process, the more resounding the success. The
“Architecture and Indoor Climate“ team offers planning
security and cost control for complex buildings with
detailed planning along the collaborative process
shared with owners, architects, consultants, and
contractors.

Did you know…
…that air is our most important element of
life? A human being can live without food for
over a month and without water for about a
week, but without air a person can survive no
more than three to five minutes at the most.
And we need a lot of air to live! While we are
quite adequately supplied with two litres of
water per day, we breathe around 20,000 litres
of air each day. In a poorly ventilated room,
the air is quickly used up. The concentration of
carbon dioxide mounts rapidly. The results are
fatigue and decreased performance.

Comfortable luxury in futuristic
architecture
……
The Marqués de Riscal in Elciego, La Rioja, Spain
In the heart of the Rioja wine-growing region in northeastern Spain,
renowned architect Frank O. Gehry created a futuristic hotel with an
innovative roof construction with almost 1,800 m2 of free-floating
titanium sheathing. Rising up like a magnificent chateau of the
twenty-first century, the exclusive hotel near the old Bodega of
Marqués de Riscal, built in 1858, offers its discriminating guests a
breathtaking view of the landscape. The building has 43 rooms and
11 suites, an exquisite wellness area with an indoor pool and fitness
centre, a gourmet restaurant, a convention and meeting centre,
ballrooms, and the future viniculture museum for the Rioja region.

Displacement flow diffusers
Displacement flow diffusers
……
Displacement flow diffusers allow cooled fresh air to be discharged into
rooms at very low air velocity and close to the floor so that a pool of fresh
air forms over the floor. This prevents air turbulence and thus drafts. The
air rises when it reaches sources of heat such as people or computers,
transferring the heat and the used air to the ceiling. The fresh air quality
in the areas occupied by people thus remains at the same especially high
level while maintaining a pleasant set temperature. Displacement flow
diffusers can also be integrated into wall areas or as columns in a room to
save space. They are made of galvanised and powder-coated sheet steel

Human beings are one of the biggest sources of humidity
indoors. We lose half a litre of water into the environment
each day through our skin alone.
Too much humidity makes us feel unwell and minimises
our ability to work. At room temperatures of 20 – 24°C,
the body radiates about 20 – 35% of its excess heat by
evaporating sweat on the skin’s surface. As the
temperature rises, our sweat production increases as well,
and our cardiac and circulatory problems worsen. At
relative humidity levels of 60 – 70 % and temperatures
above 25°C, we feel that the air is sticky and oppressive,
and our ability to work well falls to a minimum.

1,800 underfloor induction
diffusers (BID)
In view of the pending climatic change and increasing energy costs,
the EIB has been aiming for environmental certification for the
evaluation of the ecological qualities of the new building from the
beginning. The result was particularly high requirements on the
environmental compatibility of the ventilation technology used.
At the same time, the most demanding requirements on further criteria
such as air quality, comfort, noise level, flexibility, spatial
requirements, maintenance-friendliness, and costs were to be met.
Thanks to the early involvement of TROX engineers, an extremely
economical ventilation concept consisting of 1,800 underfloor
induction diffusers (BID) was realised. Integrated unnoticeably into
the rooms’ architecture, these underfloor induction diffusers enable
the use of economical air-water systems, even in room-high glazed
buildings. The decision to use TROX underfloor induction diffusers
paid off. The new EIB building was the first building on continental
Europe to be evaluated as “Very Good” according to the particularly
comprehensive BREEAM environmental certification method.

COMBEAM®: Air-water systems
that can do it all
……
Air-water systems use heat exchangers to cool and/or heat indoor air
by means of water-based heat exchangers. The system saves energy
because it takes less power to transport heat away in water than in air.
Air-water systems can be installed in open or suspended ceilings and
are very well suited for refurbishment projects. We differentiate
between active and passive chilled beams.
COMBEAM® or multi-service chilled beams, the multifunctional air-water
systems from TROX, not only provide the normal heating, cooling and
ventilation functions, but can also be equipped with extra building
services, enabling space-saving integration of lighting, smoke
detectors, loudspeakers and sprinkler systems. COMBEAMs can also be
designed in the form of design elements to accentuate a building’s
architecture, for example, as ceiling sails or as inconspicuous ceiling
installations. The option of smooth integration into centralised building communication and control systems is also possible.

Active air-water systems
Active air-water systems
……
In the case of active air-water systems, fresh air is
supplied to rooms from the central plant in addition to
water cooling. In comparison to pure air systems, the
fresh air volume required for a person’s well-being can
be reduced to one-third. Because the system is based on
the principle of induction, no extra fans are necessary to
transport the air, thus saving energy and reducing noise
to an absolute minimum. Active air-water systems are
mostly called active chilled beams. These systems save
space because they allow you to reduce the size of the
central plant systems and supply ducts, and their
installation height is very low. They are operationally
reliable and low-maintenance because they do not
contain any moving parts. They run in both cooling and
heating mode, which means you do not need to install
extra static heaters.

The “Laimer Würfel” building in Munich, Germany
In the Laim quarter of Munich near the downtown area, the “Laimer
Würfel” (Cube of Laim) is a contemporary office building characterised
by its efficient use of space and individuality. The building has eleven
upper floors with about 1,900 m2 gross floor area and a multifunctional
circular floor, which also has a convention area and casino in addition to
shops.
Large plant rooms inside the building and branched, space-consuming
air duct works are made superfluous by the use of decentralised façade
ventilation units, thus increasing useful floor space.
The decentralised ventilation units of TROX/FSL are also designed to
save energy and be maintenance friendly, whereby the operating costs
are minimised.

Ventilation solution: Decentralised sill units for supply
and extract air, as well as secondary air units (FSL-B-ZAB)
40
…
At an early construction stage, 1,600 frames were integrated into the
outer façade. 800 frames were equipped with decentralised ventilation
units. They filter the supply air, provide for, ventilation, and heat recovery, and heat or cool. To achieve the required heating and cooling
capacities, 540 additional frames were equipped with secondary air units
that can heat or cool the indoor air during pure secondary air operation.
The other 260 frames casings act as a reserve and are initially only
equipped with insulation boxes for noise and heat insulation.
They can later be retrofitted with TROX/FSL ventilation units.
The frame type of construction makes it possible to react to changes in
use in the office building in an fast, cost-effective manner.
Individual system design
More individuality with minimised investment
and energy costs
……
In our decentralised façade system ventilation (FSL) solution, we
integrate sound-absorbing ventilation units into a building’s exterior.
These units can be installed under sills or into walls or false floors.
They discharge fresh air into rooms and/or exhaust air out along the
shortest possible route.
Both in construction and in retrofitting, TROX decentralised, individually
controllable ventilation systems offer a rich variety of design options
for ventilating a building. Clients can install a complete decentralised
ventilation system or combine the decentralised supply air system with
a central extract air system. The product variation ranges from simple
flow devices to complex systems with heating and cooling functions
and integrated individual room regulation (FSL-CONTROL).
Decentralised ventilation systems provide numerous advantages.
Individual users can adjust the air quality and room temperature in
their rooms according to their own individual tastes. For investors,
TROX systems are economical, energy-saving and, above all, flexible
solutions that can be re-adapted at any time with very little work to
suit change of use.
In developing decentralised ventilation units, TROX takes its inspiration
from the inventiveness and design resourcefulness of architects to find
solutions in which functionality and design merge into an ideal whole.
With our cost-efficient prefabrication of façade elements, TROX
provides investors with integral construction, reduced installation
times and reduced interfaces.

Decentralised

…
The spatial conditions and usage plans required a ventilation concept
that could make do without a horizontal air distribution system. Only
in this way could the setup of combination and open-plan offices
continue to be possible. In the research and development laboratory of
TROX/FSL, extensive flow tests were performed to meet the project
requirements.
The advantage in the use of decentralised units was that no suspended
ceilings were required for ducts. The high flexibility through the single
room control and user-adapted settlement possibilities were an
additional advantage. Further examples for the decentralised sill
ventilation solutions of TROX/FSL are the Imtech Haus in Hamburg,
the Laimer Würfel in Munich, and the Lighttower in Frankfurt/Main.
Individual system design
Decentralised ventilation a clever refurbishment alternative
……
Complex refurbishment projects confront planners of the technical
building equipment with sophisticated problems. Here, a special focus
is on optimum, modern air conditioning and ventilation technology. In
the process, decentralised ventilation units are increasingly forming
the starting point for innovative solutions since they offer great
freedom for design and fulfil modern usage requirements.
A decisive advantage lies in the lack of duct work. Decentralised
ventilation units are installed near or into the outer façade so that the
ventilation of the stories takes place directly via the outer façade. This
leads to short transport distances with low pressure losses. At the
same time, the façade becomes an active component that can assume
further air conditioning functions.
Through the preassembly of individual components or complete,
multifunctional façade modules at the manufacturer’s factory, the
assembly and installation work on-site is strongly reduced.
If the user is not present, the units switch to standby mode or they are
switched off. The energy required for operation can be determined
simply so that the energy costs can be settled based on consumption.
This motivates the users to use energy more sparingly since they can
actively sink their individual operating costs in this manner.
Water as an energy-carrying
medium
FSL units dissipate thermal loads using an
air-water heat exchanger. Water as an
energy-carrying medium has a high specific
heating capacity and lower specific volume
than air. In comparison with a given air flow
rate, the same thermal load can be dissipated as with a lower water rate flow. As a
result, the cross-sections of the transport
lines can be reduced.
This and the elimination of the duct works
can considerably reduce the transport energy
expended.
Bürkleinhaus, Munich, Germany
Supplementary air conditioning systems
In many indoor climate concepts, ventilation systems are supplemented
by additional systems to achieve high and better comfort. Chilled
ceilings, for example, are particularly well suited for dissipating higher
thermal loads.

Fire dampers and fire protection valves
……
Fire dampers have to close after a certain temperature is
reached, sealing off sections of a building to prevent the
spreading of fire and smoke. To prevent smoke from spreading
at temperatures below the temperature that triggers the
thermal release, fire dampers can also be closed by optional
smoke detectors. Fire dampers require approval. TROX provides
the right fire damper with general building inspectorate
licence for every installation situation.

More than 80 % of the deaths that occur in fires are due
to smoke poisoning. In the toxic smoke, people lose
consciousness after only two to three breaths.
Our lungs cannot withstand much, especially in conjunction with high temperatures; they start to become
damaged at 65°C.
In nine out of ten cases, fires undergo a relatively long
initial smoldering phase in which they produce a great
deal of smoke but relatively little heat. 10 kg of foam, for
example, will produce a volume of flue and fire gases of
25,000 m3. Intact, well-coordinated fire safety systems
and modern building communication and control systems
will detect fires early, prevent smoke from spreading
within the building and exhaust the flue gas.

More than 80% of the fully air-conditioned cabins have a balcony.
Wellness areas, spa landscapes, exquisite restaurants, and stages
provide for the well-being and entertainment of the passengers.
A ship places other demands on indoor ventilation and air conditioning
technology than a building. When the Solstice class luxury liners sail
the seven seas at 24 knots in every wind and weather and set anchor
in all climatic zones, the passengers on board should always enjoy a
consistently pleasant climate. For this reason, among other things,
particularly flexible volume flow control is needed. TROX has solved
this task very well with air terminal units of the Type RN,
RN stainless steel, and EN. In addition to the required flexibility, TROX
was also able to reduce the power consumption of the air conditioning
and ventilation system considerably.

System-powered air terminal units
System-powered air terminal units
……
This type of controller eliminates conventional balancing dampers and thus the
time-consuming and expensive work of balancing and adjusting the flow rates in
the building. With Types RN and EN controllers, the desired flow rate can be simply adjusted manually using the scale located on the outside of the unit. These
air terminal units were designed for constant flow rates but are also available
with motorised flow rate adjustment.
The casing and the damper blade are made of galvanised sheet steel. In the case
of the Type VFC, the damper blade is made of plastic. The controllers are generally maintenance free. The plastic Type VFL volume flow limiter is easy to insert
into circular ducts. It limits the flow rate to the set value and maintains it at a
constant level within a close tolerances when changes in pressure occur.

Shut-off devices
Shut-off devices
……
Shut-off dampers are for ventilation systems in which areas
have to be isolated for certain operating situations for safety
reasons. Multileaf dampers are used to isolate and restrict the
air flow in ducts and other openings. External louvres provide
good protection to keep rain, leaves, and birds from getting
into the supply and exhaust openings of ventilation systems.
Pressure relief dampers and non-return dampers are used to
isolate individual sections in ventilation systems.
When the fan is running, the blades open; the degree of
opening depends on the air velocity through the unit.
When the fan is switched off, the blades close automatically.
Combinations of external louvres and multileaf dampers or
pressure relief dampers have a dual function in supply and
exhaust openings of ventilation systems. They keep rain,
leaves and birds from getting in, but also restrict or isolate the
air flow during ventilation system downtime. Pressure relief
dampers close automatically when a malfunction leads to
excessive pressure differences in duct works.

ventilation and air conditioning concept. TROX Types MSA 100 and
MSA 200 splitter attenuators and Types MKA 100 and MKA 200 splitters
were used. With their profiled splitter frames that aid flow, the latter
reduce the pressure drops in comparison with conventional splitters by up
to 30%, which makes high energy savings possible in system operation.
The splitters are hygienically tested according to VDI 6022. This guarantees
that the materials used are generally recognized as safe and do not
provide a breeding ground for microorganisms.
Splitters | Splitter attenuators | Circular silencers
Attenuators
……
In ventilation systems, noise stems from a variety of components such as fans, air terminal units, or fire dampers. To comply
with a specified noise level, attenuators are added to suitable locations in the ventilation system. The attenuators should have
adequate silencing capabilities and low air resistance, as well as being as small as possible. With the introduction of VDI 6022,
specific hygiene requirements for air conditioning systems have bee set up for the first time. Splitters and splitter attenuators
from TROX are certified for use in air conditioning systems in accordance with VDI 6022 Parts 1 and 3, DIN 1946 Part 4, and
VDI 3802.
Types MKA•XKA

• With respect to conventional splitters, the aerodynamically
formed splitter frames reduce pressure drops by up to 30% and
thus the system operating costs.
• As an alternative, designs can be in 1.4301 stainless steel or
coated splitters.
• Type MKA provides a higher level of sound attenuation,
particularly in the area of critical fan noise levels.

Clean room production of Frank Plastic AG in Waldachtal,
Germany
On 40 injection moulding machines in a 2,000 m2 clean room of the
class 8/D, Frank Plastic AG produces high-quality, medical-technical
products, such as pump units for water jet surgery. In the process, very
high demands are placed on the air purity and sterility of the entire
production process. To achieve the necessary air quality, TROX highefficiency terminal filters of filter grade H14 were installed as ceiling
and wall diffusers. The air terminal devices have a tight fit test device
and a measuring point to monitor the differential operating pressure.
In addition, special pharmacy clean room diffusers provide for sterile
air conditions at individual workstations and in particular manufacturing zones.

Air filtration
……
The objective of air filtration is to use appropriate filter
media and units to establish and maintain the level of
cleanliness required for indoor spaces. Air filtration is
the most important procedure in a ventilation system,
particularly in the case of clean room technology. Air
filters in the form of fibre filters are used in various
engineering areas.
In air conditioning systems they are used as so-called
standard air filters for removing coarse and fine dust
out of the air, thus simultaneously protecting
downstream equipment and system components.
In clean room technology (e.g. in the pharmaceutical,
medical, and microelectronics industries, etc.), systems
require an additional particulate air filter to guarantee
the high clean room classes required and to act as “air
equalisers” for laminar flows.
60
…
The following types of filters can be differentiated:
Coarse particle filters as filter pads for automatic roll filters, as
cut-to-size pads, and as cardboard frame filters for cell air filters and rolls.
Z-Line filters/filter cells.
Bag filters made of high-quality, chemical, synthetic or glass
fibre media for cell frames in the standard market sizes.
Minipleat filters as high-performance filters for extracting fine
dust, suspended particles and aerosols.
Particulate filter cells for areas with the strictest standards for
air purity and hygiene.
High-performance filter panels for clean room technology.
Filter units
Filter units
……
Air filters remove contaminants such as dust, microbes and
pollen out of the air. A variety of filter housings are available
for the different installation situations, as part of a centralised
air handling unit or for separate air filtering, for instance, of
a contaminated, closed-off area. Filters are used both in
ventilation systems for office buildings and for air filtering in
production processes that create a lot of dust, as well as in
sensitive areas such as microbe-free operating theatres or
clean rooms in the pharmaceutical and microelectronic
industries.

pressure drops, they have long service lives and maintenance
intervals.
• They stand out for their relatively low weights and small
transport volumes.
Bag filter inserts made of chemical, synthetic or
glass fibre media
……
• Bag filter inserts are used as prefilters or main filters in
ventilation systems, depending on the filter type, to extract
coarse and fine dust.
• The stable plastic front frame ensures easy disposal.
• This filter is available in the widest variety of standard market
sizes.
Minipleat filter inserts and cells used as fine dust
and particulate filters
……
• Minipleat filter inserts are used as prefilters and terminal
filters in ventilation systems that require high volume flow
rates and long filter lives.
• The wedged shape of the minipleat filter increases the filter
area and thus ensures high air flow rates with few pressure
drops.
Compact filters/particulate filters

The Deutscher Wetterdienst (German Weather Service) is not only
responsible for the weather forecast. It has an extensive legal
commission to provide information and do research, the fulfilment of
which required a new headquarters. The new building for about 900
employees consists of a three to seven story administration building
with two underground stories, an underground garage, a computer
centre, an auditorium, a library, and conference rooms. TROX know-how
was in demand for fire and smoke protection. Complex scenarios had to
be implemented successfully using the TROXNETCOM AS-i technology.
In close cooperation with a planning agency, the HVAC contractor, and
the supplier of the centralised building management system, a
thorough, open automation solution was created, into which external
systems were integrated in addition to the components, software, and
services of TROX. The connection of a fire detection system and
coupling with the centralised building management level rounded off
the overall concept. The TROXNETCOM AS-i system with TROX fire
dampers and TROX duct smoke detectors with integrated touch panel
for operation and visualisation can be operated autonomously. The
TROXNETCOM basic user software informs the operating personnel
about the current state of the plant on the touch panel and on the
building management system level. Warnings, plant faults, and
automated function checks of the fire protection system are displayed
and recorded. Due to the early inclusion of TROX in the consulting and
project planning phases, the objective of a safe, user-friendly TROXNETCOM
AS-i system solution was able to be implemented in a cost-saving
manner within the available time period.

The Novartis Campus in Basel, Switzerland
One of the most ambitious construction projects in Switzerland is in
progress at the Novartis Sankt Johann industrial complex in Basel. By
2030, a highly modern research, development, and management centre
will be created for about 10,000 employees on the premises of the new
Novartis Campus.
First-class architects, designers, and consultants are creating openplan laboratory workstations for interdisciplinary cooperation in the
individual buildings. The respective buildings on the Campus are being
named after their architects. Special value is being placed on sustainability. The energy requirements of the Campus buildings should thus
amount to only one-third of the normal energy consumption. In the
medium term, the entire area should be supplied with energy generated
without CO2.

Advanced IT Cooling Systems
Optimum cooling for computer centres
……
TROX AITCS (Advanced IT Cooling Systems) develops high-density
cooling solutions based on CO2 for the IT sector, thus playing an
important role in the high availability of computer centres and the air
conditioning of heavily thermally loaded IT workstations.
Cooling with CO2
The system cooling solutions are based on carbon dioxide (CO2) as an
energy transfer medium. Under ecological and safety aspects, CO2 is an
almost ideal cooling agent. It is nonflammable, oilfree, and chemically
inactive and has only a low ozone depletion potential. It is electrically
non-conductive and presents a danger to neither the server nor the
electrical lines. Evaporating CO2 is able to take up seven times the
amount of heat in comparison with cold water.
Both the CO2OLracTM system solution for server racks in computer centres
and the CO2OLdeskTM IT workstation air conditioning solution achieve
energy savings of 30 - 50% in comparison with conventional systems.
Eight international awards are proof of the high performance capabilities of AITCS solutions. Defining characteristics of the technology are
its maximum safety features and highest possible energy savings. AITCS
solutions can be used for all commercial server racks or desk systems
and are thus ideally suited to new and existing buildings and facilities.

secondary CO2 distribution system was implemented in stainless steel pipes. All 15 CO2OLrac™
rack coolers have temperature sensors, controllable fans, and a cooling capacity of 20 kW each.
The total cooling capacity thus amounted to 300 kW. The rack coolers were provided as a

……
Intensive cooling for blade servers
The CO2OLracTM cooling system works with CO2 as the heat transfer
medium. By means of a perforated front panel door, inside air is
conducted through the blade servers through several fans on the back
side of the rack.
In the process, the air takes up the heat of the blade servers and cools
them. The heated air is then cooled down to room temperature again
in the heat exchangers, which are operated using CO2. The heavily
thermally loaded rack thus does not have to be in the same room as the
existing air conditioning system and does not require a cooling/heating
path constellation.
Thanks to the high cooling capacity of 30 kW and more per rack, the
highest possible packing density of blade servers in the server racks can
be achieved. With respect to the use of conventional air conditioning,
using the high-performance energy transfer medium saves more than
50% space in the technical infrastructure area of a data centre, as the
number of server racks is reduced and a clearly higher room capacity is
achieved. Along with this enormous cooling capacity, energy savings of
more than 50% can be generated in comparison with conventional
systems based on cold water and other cooling agents. CO2OLracTM can
be used for all commercial server racks and is ideally suited for both
new and existing computer centres.

Intensive cooling for dealer desks
With the development of CO2OLdeskTM, TROX AITCS offers intensive
cooling for dealer desks. This high-performance desk air conditioning
system was developed to fulfil the requirements of investment banks
for the equipment of high-performance workstations.
Function:
The heat loads arising in the dealer desks due to computers and
other heat sources are directly dissipated via the CO2OLdeskTM system.
The cooling creates a microclimate that is confined to the individual
workstation. The concept guarantees an optimum adaptation of
CO2OLdesk™ to the computer heat load to be removed.
The self-regulating system lets users set up their computer tower on
either side of the workstation.
The high-density cooling system uses CO2 as a heat transfer medium.
For the installed data processing technology it presents no potential
dangers in comparison with water-based cooling and enables energy
savings from 10 to 30% due to the low power consumption. CO2
detection systems continuously monitor the CO2 concentration in the
room and guarantee an early warning using acoustic and visual signals
in case CO2 escapes. On the whole, CO2OLdesk™ comes off well in
system comparisons. The system offers great cooling capacity in the
dealer halls and optimum workstation comfort without impairment of

kilowatt hours of electricity. This is twice as much as in
2000 and makes up 1.5% of the national power
consumption.
If the power consumption of the computer centres
continues to rise at the same rate as at the beginning of
the century, it will reach about 100 kilowatt hours by
2011 according to the EPA. For ecological and economical
reasons, energy-saving innovations are thus even more in
demand today than ever before.
