ISSUE 106
This issue of Collector Glass News would not be possible without the hard work of Brent Sehnert,
editor of CGN for the last 11 years, and Mark Chase and Mike Kelly, the previous editors and
founders of CGN. They have given glass collectors a fine publication, with the help of many
contributors, writers and photographers. With help from Brent Sehnert, Fred Stepanian, Mike Vath,
Tom Coughlin, David Lester, Jimmy Driver, Jimmy Tyler and many others I hope to continue in
this issue to provide glass collectors with interesting and current information on this enjoyable
hobby. The newsletter cannot survive without contributions, so please send articles, photos, new
issue information, classified ads and glass collecting information to Brian Callahan at 317-345-4547
or [email protected].
In this issue is a Warner Brothers Checklist and article by Tom Coughlin, who has worked out a
fine tool to keep track of the variations in this popular set. Some new issues of glasses have been
found by Tom, Sean Will, Brent and others, as well as some unusual glass finds by our club
President, Fred Stepanian. Also in this issue is glasses auction 105 with some great items.
We have been updating the club website www.pgcaglassclub.com which is a great tool for members
and other collectors. Don't forget to browse and submit glasses to the glasses database, developed
and maintained by Steve Simek. The PGCA Annual Meeting 2011 is May 20th and 21st in
Columbus, OH at Best Western Suites 1133 Evans Way Court 614-870-2378.
Attention Members! The Club website has been revamped to allow easier
dues renewal and for the first time allows new members to subscribe. On any page click

Sean Will reports that the Trend Setters store at local SW Pennsylvania malls have
Marvel glasses, in 4 glass box sets. The glasses come in 10 oz., 14 oz. and 16 oz.
sizes. The box sets are of Iron Man, Spiderman, or The Hulk. There may be some
new versions or new characters in 2011.
Gordmans Department stores have a large selection of character glasses,
including Beatles, Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Playboy, Godfather, Ozzie Osborn, Kiss
Black Crows and other characters. They also have a large assortment of beer brands.
Some of the character sets like the Beatles have several different versions.
Tom Coughlin has found at the Arbys in Michigan, a Michigan vs Michigan State
glass. Titled The Big Chill at the Big House, the glass is promoting the hockey game
for these 2 colleges on 12-11-2010. This is a nice looking Arbys glass. It is on a heavy
pounder style glass, with the Arbys logo.
Another evolving story concerning collectible glasses is the issue of cadmium and
lead paint on glasses. The last Shrek glass promotion from McDonald's was recalled
due to the cadmium on the glass. Even though the amount of cadmium was minimal
and the US Government did not insist on a recall, McDonald's recalled the Shrek glasses.
According to an AP article in my local paper the US Consumer Product Safety Commission
said it was collecting samples of all glasses cited in an AP investigation into dangerous
metals in children's merchandise. The article stated that two companies that imported the
glasses from China, with Superman, Wonder Woman, and Wizard of Oz characters,
recalled about 160,000 glasses. These particular glasses were purchased at the WB
store and were tested by Associated Press. Regulators are more strict if they consider
these type of glasses to be a children's product. It remains to be seen what impact these
investigations will have on the future of glass promotions in the US and other countries.
Interesting to me was the color photo in the Indianapolis paper for this article shows an
Olympus Innov-X Delta Handheld XRF Analyzer being used to test a 1970's glass
with Ronald McDonald in the action series. It's a little late to recall that one I think.

Unusual Glasses
Fred Stepanian
Fred Stepanian found some unusual glasses on a trip to Canada. Shown are glasses
from an eight glass Jurrasic Park set that was probably not released, a set of four
from Libbey-St. Clair promoting glassware as a form of advertising, and an unusual
Police Academy and Star Trek glass. Fred also found a color variation of the Canadian
Peter Pen short Big Chief glass.

Presidents Message
Hello fellow members,
I would like to wish all club members a belated Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
As a new year begins I have a good feeling our club will continue to thrive and grow. As I look back
over last years newsletters I see a few new collectors joining our club each issue, our website continues
to attract new people who share our interests and weren’t aware that we existed and our yearly Annual
Meeting continues to be well attended and enjoyed.
Our Annual Meeting will again be in Columbus, Ohio in May. Details and dates of this event are in
this newsletter. Please plan on attending as it is a great chance to meet fellow glass collectors, sell or
trade your duplicate glasses and add some additional glasses to your collection.
It is amazing to me how several club members still seem to find many interesting glasses on eBay,
Craig’s List or in their travels that we never knew existed. I’m guessing that over the course of a year
over one hundred glasses are discovered that aren’t in any book and no one has ever seen or heard of.
Someone is always finding glasses of a different size or color variation, an unknown character or even
a unknown set of glasses to add to our database.
Just when you think that you completed a set that you have been working on someone will come up to
you and say “ did you know those glasses also come in a taller size" or "are you going to collect the
same glasses in a wavy bottom." Just look in this issue and you will see what I mean. Very few
hobbies can claim this perk.
God I love this hobby!! God I hate this hobby!!
Hope to see you all in May.
Happy glass hunting,
Fred Stepanian.

PGCA ANNUAL MEETING will be May 20th and 21st, 2011 in Columbus, OH.
This is the same weekend as the large Springfield, OH Extravaganza Flea M arket.
Our meeting site is at the Best Western Suites located at 1133 Evans Way Court
in Columbus, OH right off of I-70, on the west side of Columbus. The PGCA
annual meeting is a great place to meet other collectors, buy, sell and trade
glasses, and enjoy the many interesting shops, malls and attractions in the area.
The club has a get together Friday night, and on Saturday a silent auction, and
business meeting in the evening. Plus lots of room hopping and good fun. The
phone number for reservations is 614-870-2378.

Interesting Facts: The Pepsi 1973 Warner Brothers Collector Series
The first cartoon glasses to be released by Pepsi in the United States and Canada were the 18 Warner
Brothers Cartoon Characters in 1973. This was done to encourage fast food restaurants to sell their
brand of soft drinks exclusively. The promotion was a huge success, and Pepsi continued to license
cartoon characters throughout the 1970’s.
You buy a glass of Pepsi and for 49 cents more get to keep the glass! What a concept.
They were originally released in upstate New York by the Carroll’s Restaurant Chain, now Burger
King. The restaurant originally ordered six characters; Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Road
Runner, Sylvester, and Tweety. They were so popular that Carroll’s decided to order additional
characters until the series numbered eighteen.
The original six characters are much easier for collectors to find these days than the remaining twelve.
Many restaurants only ordered the original six. Approximately 14.5 million glasses of the entire series
were produced.
At first, the 12 ounce glasses were available. As the success of the promotion spread, more and more
restaurants that sold Pepsi participated. The larger 16 ounce (and the rare 15 ounce) glasses soon
replaced the shorter glasses (you get more Pepsi in the 16 ounce glass!). The Pepsi logo first appeared
under the character’s image (LUN), and then was relegated to the side of the glass between the two
images (LUS) to accommodate a larger image of the character.
The Brockway Glass Company could not keep up with the demand, and the Federal Glass Company
started producing a glass that was thinner and more delicate. While this glass was more pleasing than
the thicker, clunkier Brockways, it was easily broken. This might explain the less availability of the
Federals to today’s collectors.
Later on, the characters’ names were changed from black lettering to white. This was because the
character’s name in black letters disappeared when the glass was filled with Pepsi.
The following are the 10 categories of the 1973 series:
1) 16 ounce Brockway LOS (Logo on Side) black letters, all 18 characters
2) 16 ounce Brockway LOS white lettering, all 18 characters
3) 16 ounce Brockway LUN (Logo Under Name) black letters, only 6 characters
4) 16 ounce Federal LOS black letters, all 18 characters
5) 16 ounce Federal LOS white letters, only 14 characters
6) 16 ounce Federal LUN black letters, all 18 characters
7) 15 ounce Federal LUN black letters, total unsure*
8) 12 ounce Brockway LUN black letters, only 6 characters**
9) 12 ounce Federal LUN black letters, only 6 available
10) 12 ounce Brockway LOS black letters, total unsure***

*15 ounce Federals: Tomart lists 16 characters excluding Beaky and Slow Poke. Chase and Kelly
lists Petunia Pig, Tasmanian Devil, and Henerey Hawk as extremely difficult to find, and “no one
really knows if there are 15 ounce LUN versions of Slow Poke Rodriguez and Beaky Buzzard.
Time will tell”.
According to a reliable source, the 15 ounce and 16 ounce thin LUN glasses may not be all Federal
glasses. Some of these glasses were actually made by Brockway, as per Brockway stickers on the
bottom of the glasses. The belief is that the slight size difference between the 15 ounce and the 16
ounce glasses may actually be because of the two different glass companies.
**The 12 ounce LUN glasses are said to have come with a metal tray.
***The 12 ounce LOS glasses are not listed in the PGCA database, but are listed in Chase and
Kelly p. 30. I do not own any of this series, but I know several people that have them.
