Dear Marist Families
One of the great celebrations of the year at Marist is Champagnat Day, the feast day of the
founder of our Brothers, St Marcellin Champagnat. Our whole school community gathers for Mass
in Marcellin Hall, there are activities after that, then a barbecue lunch and more activities again
after lunch. While the younger boys play games the boys in our senior years go out for community
service. It’s always an enjoyable day where boys and staff can celebrate much of what is good
about our school and focus on the man whose vision many years ago has brought us together.
Each year I enjoy Champagnat Day and I especially enjoy seeing the boys enter so fully into the
day. People here, younger and older alike, have a great affection for St Marcellin and an equally
strong appreciation of our Canberra Marist Brothers. But things are changing and have been for
a while. There are only five Brothers in the Monastery at present, unlike the 20 plus that were in
the community in the early years. Nevertheless good things continue to happen here in the name
of Marcellin and the Brothers; they are being done through the efforts of lay Marists, teachers,
parents, friends and old boys, all who in their own dedicated and loyal way with the Brothers
community at the centre, make sure that the Marist spirit lives on and that boys and families
today can benefit from all that is good about a Marist education.
Staff are often reminded that they are the “Champagnats of today.” When we sing our song ‘Great
Man of God’ next Thursday I want us to sing not only about Marcellin but also about his legacy
which lives on today through his Brothers and through all of us who call ourselves Marist. Happy
Champagnat Day for 6 June.

This week the College is presenting the musical performance ‘The King and I’. A huge amount of
work has gone into the production and I recommend it to you all. Marist has a wonderful tradition
for producing truly first class drama and musicals. My sincere thanks to the cast, band and crew,
boys from Marist and students from other schools, and a big thank you to Margaret Smith and
all in the Performing Arts Department and other staff who have made ‘The King and I’ a reality.
May St Marcellin continue to watch over our boys and their families.

CONGRATULATIONS TO
OUR CROSS COUNTRY TEAM
Marist dominated the ASC cross country championships held at
Stromlo Park last Monday 27th May. Congratulations to all our
competitors on strong performances across all age groups. The
team captained by Patrick Jackson won all the team categories
from the 13 years to the seniors. No school has achieved this in
recent memory. This was the college’s 27th consecutive ASC victory.
As a result, the whole squad has now qualified for next Monday’s
ACT championships. This event will be held again at Stromlo Park.
More information will be provided to all our runners this week.
A full report will be published after the completion of the ACT titles
with a wrap of a most successful season.

Champagnat Day Information
On Thursday 6 June 2013, the feast of our founder, Saint Marcellin
Champagnat, will be celebrated at the College.
Celebrations will commence with a Mass in Marcellin Hall commencing
9.00am followed by a BBQ lunch. In the afternoon students will
participate in sporting, community service or cultural activities.
After Mass boys from Years 4 –12 will participate in a BBQ, the cost
of which will be included in Term 3 school fees. This will also cover
the cost of morning tea. All boys are expected to participate in this
community event to celebrate our Feast Day.
Following the BBQ, students will have an opportunity to get changed
for afternoon activities which have been chosen in advance. In a few
cases there is a cost involved and your son will have these details.
Champagnat Day celebrations over the past few years. Year 11 students
will assist with the organisation of the large variety of activities offered
during the afternoon in the senior and junior schools.
In the event of wet weather, the celebrations would continue with a
slightly altered format. Afternoon classes would be those of Day 9.
The annual College celebration of our Feast Day is always a most
enjoyable and memorable occasion for the boys. We trust that
Thursday June 6 will be a continuation of this tradition. Parents and
students are reminded that attendance on the day is mandatory
(except in the case of any students who are genuinely ill). Full school
uniform should be worn in the morning and students should bring
Marist sports uniform (or other appropriate clothing dependant upon
the activity) for the afternoon activities.
During the afternoon Year 12 students will be involved in community
service activities around Canberra. This has been a feature of our

YEAR 8 CAMP
Year 8 camp started with a brisk early departure to the warmer climates of
the Mimosa National Parks. After an enjoyable bus ride and short stop, the
students met their instructors and guides for the next 3 days of the camp.
The instructors guided the students in packing and waterproofing their bags.
Although no rain was predicted, the students had plenty of opportunities for
the students to test out their new skills! Each group then set off on their first
walk with packs loaded and heavy. The sights and beauty of Tathra made an
impression on everyone.
The first camp was a hive of activity as students collected fire wood, set up for
dinner and put up their tents.
The students had to prepare and cook their own meals on their new found
tool the ‘Trangia’. Students and teachers looked as if the ‘Masterchef’ crew was
filming as they demonstrated a wide variety of culinary skills. However, there
were a fair share of mishaps as well!
The next day, groups woke up early just as the sun was rising (and in some
cases, the rain was pouring). Students worked hard to cross over their first
challenge - the cold water of the inlet! They then walked their way around the
coast.
That night the students learnt a lot about different knots and lashings, to build
a raft that would take them safely across the lake. It would take a great deal of
communication and teamwork to get through the early morning raft building.
Our adventurous groups crossed over the lake with great ease and skill as they
manhandled their rafts across the current.
Students finished off their camp with a trek back to their starting point, which
allowed them to recollect on their adventures and have a hard earned lunch.
Thanks to the students for their behaviour and work on the camp. Thanks
also to Mr Moore, Mrs Crompton, Mr Holloway, Mr Weaver, Mr Partridge, Mr
Stakelum, Mr Zhang and Mr Rowland for their support of the program and our
campers. Thanks to the seniors for their support and advice to the students.

Reconciliation Assembly
Last Friday’s whole school assembly was a special event devoted as it
was to the commencement of Reconciliation Week. As has become
customary the College was pleased to welcome some of the families of
our Indigenous students in Years 4-12 to the assembly and morning tea.
It was a shame that several of the Indigenous boys in the College from
Years 6 and 8 missed the opportunity to attend the assembly as they
were away on camp.
Each of the Indigenous boys present took part in the opening liturgy
prepared so creatively by Ms Garvie. Tom Horton as our senior Indigenous
student, did a fine job in leading the College in prayerful recognition of
this important time of solidarity with the Aboriginal members of our
community.
The assembly highlight was Guest Speaker, Mr Peter O’Callaghan. Peter is
an old boy of the College, a teacher, an Aboriginal man and has toured as
an Australian Aboriginal Cricket squad member. His skill as an engaging
speaker in touch with the boys was much appreciated by students and
staff alike.

OFFCUTS Starting to take shape
OFFCUTS continues this Wednesday afternoon, if you are looking for a hands-on
practical service activity and can spare 45 minutes after school then you should
pop in to the Technology Department and check it out. All of the projects built will
be sent overseas to children in need of some Christmas spirit. If you would like to
sign up for OFFCUTS, simply print off and return the permission note and return to
Mr Ahearne (Youth Ministry Office).
Student 2 Student training
Thanks to Sally from the Smith Family who visited the Student 2 Student boys last
week and trained them as mentors for the reading program which will commence
early next term. The boys were guided through the basics of reading assistance,
pause, prompt, praise technique and also given some tips on how to connect
with their reading buddy over the telephone. Congratulations to Mr Topham who
is now coordinating the S2S program at Marist and can be found in the English
Department.
Global Leadership Convention
On Tuesday this week members of the Marist Justice & Solidarity group
attended the Global Leadership Convention at the AIS. It was an eye
opening day, as the students engaged in activities that brought home
the challenges that people in developing nations face everyday. The
group was also briefed on the 40 Hour Famine and how they can make
a difference in the Canberra community. The boys spent some time
with Jeeven, a Marist Old Boy who is currently studying at the ANU and
taking World Vision by storm as the ACT coordinator and facilitator of
the Global Leadership Convention.
Surviving Below the Poverty Line
Congratulations to all of the boys who took part in the Live Below the Poverty
Line challenge last week. You have generated awareness of the issue in our
community and also raised much needed funds for the millions of people who
live below the poverty line every day.
Final Round of ACTIV8
ACTIV8 continues concludes this week with a massive game of bin ball
down on the Tennis Courts at lunch time. Well done to all of the boys
who joined us last week for the Tug of War, it was massive and as you
can tell by the photos the Year 7s clearly dominated the might Year 11
MYM Team.

Year 8 Brothers Together
The second four Houses of Year 8s took part in their Brothers Together
program on Friday last week at the end of a massive week which also included
three days of camping!
The day was broken into three parts of Youth Ministry, Service Learning and
Clackers 4 Kids direct service initiative. The Youth Ministry session was run
by the Year 10 Christian Leadership class and was focussed on the themes of
Simplicity and Presence, two of the Marist Pillars which form our spirituality.
The Year 8s took part in icebreaking activities, games, drama, multimedia,
listened to a personal sharing on the theme by a Year 10 student, reflected
in small groups and prayed in a liturgy. Well done to the Year 10 Christian
Leadership class for providing such an excellent reflection experience for the
Year boys. The Service Learning activities consisted of presentations from the
Seniors who went on the previous two immersions to Sri Lanka and Solomon
Islands, a speech by the College Service Captain and a guest speaker Debbie
Kensey from Samaritans Purse, who spoke about Operation Christmas Child
– shoe box appeal. The Service Learning workshop concluded with the boys
designing a clacker that will be included as a gift to a child in a developing
nation. The boys had to draw something which told their ‘story’ through the
way they designed the decorations on the clacker. Thank you to everyone
who assisted with the Year 8 Brothers Together program.
Year 10 Service Day
Last Thursday half of Year 10 went out on their Service day experience.
The boys connected with and served a variety of people in eight different
venues across Canberra, also including Jindalee and Mirinjani Nursing
Homes, Turner School, Cranleigh Primary School, Sharing Places, Myalla
Gardens, Woden School, Goodwin Village. The boys were engaged in
activities that ranged from a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at Goodwin Village,
assisting adults with special needs in getting out into the Canberra
community through the Sharing Places program, cleaning up gardens for
the elderly, assisting teachers in classrooms with children who have special
needs and being chased around the playground. Well done to all of the
Year 10s who really stepped up and stepped out to serve the community.
Thanks to everyone who made the day a success including the venue
coordinators and the teachers who accompanied the boys, Chris Morrissey,
Glen Seivers, Tony Sullivan and Glenn Slater.
Year 10 Reflection Day
The Year 10s headed out to the Greenhill’s Retreat Centre at the Cotter and St
Benedict’s, Narrabundah last Thursday to participate in the Year 10 Reflection
Day. The reflection consisted of small groups, large input sessions, a drama,
personal sharing by a Year 12 student, and a liturgy to conclude the day.
The theme of the reflection was ‘Count Your Blessings’ and gave the Year 10
students some time to consider their giftedness, where this came from, and
how and who they can use their gifts for. The day was facilitated by the Year
10 Teachers, MYM Leaders and the Year 12 MYM Team. I would like to thank
the following staff members for their commitment to the Reflection Day,
Kathy Haseler, Mimi Chen, Kathleen Garvie, Luke Croker, Peter Hawes, Terence
Pereira and Peter Igoe-Taylor.

Marist Basketball Club’s U12C Blue defeated Radford Bulldogs 19 –
10 on Saturday at Tuggeranong.
It was an exciting day for the team, being our first win of the season
and for most of the team it’s their first basketball season ever.
