LAUDATO SI — WE ALL NEED TO CARE FOR OUR COMON HOME
Pope Francis' new encyclical "Laudato Si:' On Care for Our Common Home" is addressed to "every person living on this planet."
That means you. And, come to think of it, the encyclical also would apply to the astronauts living in the Interna onal Space Staon, even though technically they're not on this planet.
Pope Francis points out that our rela onship with the environment can never be isolated from our rela onship with others and
with God. The Church teaches that crea on is a gi from God, and we show respect for our Creator by taking care of the environment. We also care for crea on because of the rela onship between the environment and our well-being, a rela onship known as human ecology.
The pope cites the devasta ng impact of climate change on the most vulnerable people of our
world and of our responsibility to protect the earth and each other.
According to Catholic Relief Services, developing na ons are prone to major devasta on as a result
of climate-related disasters. Homes, livelihoods, crops, livestock and human lives are being destroyed in the wake of storms and floods. Severe hunger and disease o en follow these disasters
at a slower but just as deadly pace. CRS works to help the poor become more resilient to natural
disasters and the effects of climate change.
Climate change, the pope explains, is a mul dimensional problem with serious social and economic implica ons. We are called to ac on at every level -- as individuals, as members of a region and as a global community to redefine our rela onship with nature. Some of us have already taken steps in their own lives and as advocates of public policies
that make our world a cleaner place to live. Others have yet to begin. As Pope Francis explains, we must do more.

women in crisis pregnancies and offering life-affirming alterna ves to abor on) needs YOU… Are you a
college or HS student, a re red adult, or a servant-hearted person with flexible M-F 9am-5pm
availability, looking to fill your me with volunteer work? Star ng now, your help is needed
to prepare 8,000 bo les for our Baby Bo le
Campaign by cleaning, tagging, and boxing
them so they can be sent to churches and
schools. The spare change we collect in this
campaign is our biggest fundraiser! It is a perfect project for up to four people at a me who
want to talk and work on a project or individuals. We are
located at 5116 N. Cicero Ave. (just south of Foster, off the
Edens). Hours are flexible but shi s of 9am-noon, 1-4pm, or
other weekly hours are preferred. Or make a day of it: clean
bo les 9am-12noon, a end Mass in our chapel at noon, eat

Gree ngs! On behalf of the brothers and the poor we serve in Ruai- Chokaa, Nairobi, Kenya, we
want to express our sincere gra tude to each and every one of you for your generous financial
($28.525) as well as spiritual support, over the years.
MOP Kenyan Mission was established in 2007 to care for the homeless elderly and children with
special needs. Over the years by the grace of God and with the support of great friends like yourself, we were able to put up a temporary school for 120 children, a home for 25 children and elderly, a weekly clinic, and a soup kitchen. Nearly 300 families benefit daily from our mission here.
Your contribu ons have been used for the up keeping of the school. These funds have allowed us
to purchase books, materials, and shoes for the children. We were also able to be er equip our
kitchen in both the apostolate and the school. Thanks to this, the children are now able to enjoy
be er quality meals at school.

wsparcie duchowe nam okazane.
Misja w Kenii powstała w 2007 roku w
celu pomocy starszym bezdomnym osobom jak i dzieciom
specjalnej troski. W ciągu tych lat z łaski Boga i z pomocą
wspaniałych przyjaciół takich jak Wy mogliśmy założyć
tymczasową szkołę dla 120 dzieci, dom dla sierot,
tygodniową klinikę i kuchnię dla ubogich. W naszej Misji
codziennie znajduje pomoc około 300 rodzin.
Wasze donacje pomagają nam w prowadzeniu szkoły.
Zakupiliśmy książki, materiały szkolne, mundurki i buciki dla
dzieci. Mogliśmy także lepiej wyposażyć szkolną kuchnię
dzięki czemu dzieci spożywają lepsze posiłki. Fundusze od
Was pozwalają nam również zadbać o kondycję budynków i
terenu. Część pieniędzy będzie użyta na budowę studni
która dostarczy wodę do naszych domów. Niedawno
zakończyliśmy budowę muru otaczającego posesję Misji. W

ON RSVPs: TO WEDDINGS, AND OTHERWISE

There’s a li le game I play whenever I’m invited to a wedding. The
object of the game is simple: be the first to return the RSVP. Not
to be among the first. Not to be, say, in the top ten. I want to be
the first--the very first--of the invited guests responding in the
posi ve. The last wedding I got invited to was just a few weeks
ago, and a er pu ng in a long day, logging several training miles
a er work, and then stopping off at the local Jewel to get something to make for dinner, I didn’t get home un l a er 8:00 PM.
That’s when I found Maria and James’ wedding invita on in the
mail slot. In truth, I was hungry and spent, but as much as I wanted to just sit down with a glass of wine, I knew that if I did this, the
evening would slip away. Accordingly, I signed-off on the RSVP
form and headed back into the night to deliver it in person to the
mailbox in front of the Jefferson Park Post Office.
This was no guarantee of being first in line, of course (I just missed
it…), but to reference an old golf maxim which holds that the pu
can’t drop if it doesn’t reach the hole, “Never up, never in!” I take
an aggressive approach to returning RSVPs because I want the
people invi ng me to know--and sooner than later--that I’m totally
in. Why the immediate commitment? Because I believe weddings
represent the Kingdom as well as just about anything I’ve been a
part of over the years. I mean, the joy and love at most weddings
I’ve a ended have been very nearly tangible, and as a priest friend
told me years ago, if love is present and real for the en re commu-
nity--which it certainly is--at a wedding, then love can be present
and real for all of us, all the me, everywhere, a.k.a. the Kingdom.
Why wouldn’t I be excited about ge ng invited to such a miracle
in the moment? Why wouldn’t I want to say, “Yes! I’m coming!”
and be quick about it?
Which makes me wonder some mes why I’m not as quick to RSVP
to the invita on that Jesus extends to me today. The Gospel picks
up where it le off last week when Jesus sent the Twelve out
preaching repentance and healing the sick. Today, they return and
are excited to tell Jesus all about it, but even as they do so, the
crowds con nue to gather, not even leaving the disciples any me
to eat. And this is when Jesus extends an invita on to his friends
that really applies to you and me as well. “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while…” I know--because I’ve
stayed there a few mes--that above the entrance door to the
Cardinal Stritch Retreat House in Mundelein are the words, Venite
seorsum. The La n text is taken from Christ’s invita on to all of us
to come away for a while. Away from the world. Away from doing
even good things, just to reconnect with the reason we’re doing
them in the first place. And while the retreat house is nice, so is
the kitchen table, or the den, or a park bench. I like weddings because they speak to me of the Kingdom, but no more so than a
quiet talk with the Lord. I RSVP quickly to wedding invita ons. I
need to be quicker to RSVP to Christ’s invita on to come away.

BAPTISM:
For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first
child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each
month at 7:30PM in the Church, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of
each month at 7:30PM in the Church. Following registration, the
sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in English on the second Saturday
each month at 6:00PM and on the fourth Sunday of the month at the
12:30PM Mass. The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in Polish on
the first Saturday of the month at 6:00PM and on the third Sunday of
the month at the 3:00PM Mass. Please call the rectory to register at

For Adults: Classes are taught through the Rite of Christian Initiation
Program (RCIA) on Sunday mornings at 10:00AM. Please call Stan
