Annual Report
2011-2012
Mother McAuley
Liberal Arts High School
“No work of charity can be more productive of good to society…
than the careful instruction of women.”
~ Catherine McAuley
Our Mission
Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School is a Catholic educational community
committed to providing a quality secondary education for young women. In the
tradition of the Sisters of Mercy and their foundress, Catherine McAuley, we prepare
students to live in a complex, dynamic society by teaching them to think critically,
communicate effectively, respond compassionately to the needs of their community
and assume roles of Christian leadership. In partnership with parents, we empower
young women to acknowledge their giftedness and to make decisions with a
well-developed moral conscience. We foster an appreciation of the diversity of the
global community and a quest for knowledge and excellence as life-long goals.
Our History
A small group of Mercy Sisters
arrived in Chicago in 1846, led by
Frances Warde, Catherine McAuley’s
closest friend. Within weeks they
opened a “select school” that became
St. Francis Xavier Academy for
Females, the first school chartered
in the city of Chicago. The course of
study covered primary, secondary
and collegiate levels. The first
building was located on Wabash
Avenue between Madison and
Monroe Streets. When the Chicago
Fire in 1871 destroyed the original
building, St. Francis Academy
relocated to 29th and Wabash for
a short time, then to a larger site at
49th and Cottage Grove in 1900.
Our McAuley Commitment
In the 1950s, the southwest side
of Chicago needed a Catholic girls’
school to serve a fast-growing
population. In 1956 “the Academy”
relocated once again. Mother
McAuley Liberal Arts High School
and St. Xavier College (which is
now a university) opened in the
fall of 1956 to serve secondary and
post-secondary women students
respectively. McAuley opened
with 523 students, 300 of whom
were first year students. Today the
enrollment is approximately
1,200 young women. These young
women and the 150 faculty and
staff members form the presentday McAuley community.
•To close the gap between tuition and real costs
•To improve technology and teaching resources
•To strengthen Campus Ministry and retreat programs
•To assist families with tuition
•To strengthen the annual budget
•To grow the endowment
For Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School—I will!
A Reflection...
From Mercy Day to ring ceremonies, plaid skirts to white
graduation gowns, gloves and red roses, Mother McAuley
Liberal Arts High School continually celebrates its rich
history and tradition. Since 1846, through the generous
support of the Sisters of Mercy and donors, Mother McAuley
has remained a pioneer in the Catholic single-gender
education of young women in the Chicago area.
Although much has changed over the
years, our mission and conviction to honor
the work begun by Catherine McAuley
propels us into tomorrow. Our work
has cultivated alumnae who are critical
thinkers prepared to continue their
post-secondary education, to begin their
careers and to be lifelong learners. They
are women of faith who have achieved a
lifetime advantage that empowers them
to succeed in life.
As we reflect on the 2011/2012
academic year, we are amazed at the
changes that took place throughout our
school and campus. We were able to
provide a safe and beautiful school building
while enhancing targeted areas of our
facilities. First, we completely rebuilt
and expanded the school’s main parking
lot. It was a major enhancement to our
campus profile.
Next, we began construction on our
new state-of-the art, environmentally
conscious Chemistry lab addition. This
venture sets the stage for our students to
explore science in new and exciting ways,
preparing and encouraging them to pursue
careers in science, technology, engineering
and math; areas under-represented by
women. Both these improvements enable
us to continue our tradition of providing
our young women with the opportunity
to grow and reach their potential in every
aspect of McAuley life.
But with great tradition comes great
responsibility. A responsibility to continue
Catherine McAuley’s legacy of leadership,
courage and perseverance and service to
those in need. A responsibility to honor
the Sisters of Mercy, educators and
families who have paved the way for our
current students and those who have yet
to cross our threshold.
Today’s ever-changing economic
landscape and the rising cost of Catholic
school tuition, fees, books and even
transportation present a challenge for
many families. In supporting McAuley, our
donors make a tangible expression of their
love, hope and dedication to our students
and mission. Any gift, no matter how big or
small, advances McAuley’s mission to offer
young women quality learning, spiritual
growth and development opportunities
to prepare them for the many challenges
that await them beyond the classroom.
Thank you, our stewards, for your
gifts of time, talent, treasure and prayers.
With a balanced vision of academic
excellence, cultural wealth in the arts,
athletic achievement and spiritual life,
McAuley stands poised to offer future
generations of young women avenues to
grow as compassionate, responsible and
productive leaders in a dynamic and global
society. This is the Lifetime Advantage that
a McAuley education and your generous
support provide. In the words of Catherine McAuley,
“Let charity be our badge of honor…so that
it may truly be said, there is in us but one
heart and one soul in God.” May the Lord
bless and keep you.

Making a Difference
Theatre Updates—
a word from Pat Haynes
It is with great pride that I share with you
the wonderful theatre season of the
2011-2012 school year and the summer
of 2012. Our season was marked by a
rich diversity of shows and highlighted the
amazing talent of our students, alums
and community members. Our first
performance of the year was on Mercy Day,
when we led the school celebration with
our story of Catherine McAuley, which we
performed again with a slightly enhanced
version for the Mercy Secondary Ed
Conference in October. The show season
began last fall with our lavish production
of 42nd Street, which featured not
one but two casts of talented McAuley
students and boys from our brother
schools. In 42nd Street, our students
became master tap dancers and performers
of the 1930s while sharing the story of
young dreams that can come true with
enough hard work, dedication and talent.
As the season continued we treated
more than 400 grade school students to an
afternoon of Halloween fun during our
Not-so-Haunted House led by members
of the International Thespian Society and
the Acting classes. December gave the
Thespians an opportunity to share their
many talents at the annual “Girl’s Night
Out” event. In early January, theatre
students attended the Illinois High School
Theatre Festival and joined with 4,000
theatre students from across the stage
for a weekend of learning. In January,
the Theatre Seminar II students took the
stage with the stylized comedy, The Night
I Died at the Palace Theatre, taking
a mystery comedy romp through a true
comedy of character. Mid-February
was the annual Thespian Grade School
Workshop, giving students one more
opportunity to teach and lead grade school
students’ through theatrical fun and
performance. The end of February and
early March was the Theatre Seminar
I students opportunity to shine. They
presented the new play, The Third
Wave, in a moving performance about
a historical situation in the 60s, which
shaped the future of one young teacher
and the group of students in the class.
In April, Theatre students visited
Broadway and saw seven Broadway shows
and toured the city. The end of April
means One Acts to Theatre students, and
last year we were proud to boast that
our One Act Festival featured 12 original
scripts written and directed by members
of Theatre Seminar II. May brought our
annual end-of-the-year celebration, in
which we inducted 40 new members to
the International Thespian Society and
honored performances given during the
year. In addition, our Acting I and II classes
held performances in December, May
and March. A very busy year!
Summer Theatre brought more
diversity and many of our alums home for
summer theatre fun. We presented the
musical Side Show, a rarely done and very
difficult piece that deals with those who
feel different and alone. Our cast gave a
powerful performance. We then flipped
styles for our production of Bye Bye Birdie,
the classic story based on the Elvis-like
character that has the whole town reacting
like teenage “beatlemaniacs.”
2011 All-School Show - 42nd Street
Our Kids Kamp program served more
than 200 grade school students who
gave great performances in Winnie the
Pooh, Kid’s Collection and The Little
Mermaid Junior.
One of the highlights of the summer
was the opportunity to use our new light
board, which was generously donated
by an anonymous “giving tree” donor.
The Giving Tree is a list of items that the
various academic departments need, but
may not be included in their current fiscal
budget. These are items that will enhance
the department. The Giving Tree allows the
donor to specify where his or her donation
will go or what it can purchase. It is a great
opportunity for a donor to match their
gift with their particular interest or cause.
The year was busy and vibrant and
much good work was done by all involved.
Thanks to all who sat in our audiences for
one or more of the shows. We hope to see
you for our fall season production of
Fiddler on the Roof. Mark your calendars
for November 14-18.
McAuley Theatre is very strong—thank
you for your continued support.
Yours truly,
Pat Haynes,
Theatre Faculty
New Scholarships
In conjunction with a strong theatre season
this past year, we are pleased to announce
that two new scholarships have been created
that will benefit students in the Fine Arts
Department, specifically those student
who are enrolled in the Theatre and Music
Programs. These programs were intimately
involved in the creation of two new
scholarships to assist McAuley students.
The first scholarship opportunity was
the awarding of the inaugural Don Haynes
Theatre Scholarship that gave a $1,000
award to a senior Theatre student. This
scholarship fund was created by friends
and donors in the memory of our beloved
Don Haynes, husband of Pat Haynes, who
passed away suddenly in the fall of 2011.
The second opportunity was the
creation of a new music scholarship in
honor of Sister Ellen Marie Ryan, RSM.
In a combination of efforts, the Theatre
and Music Programs of the Fine Arts
Department, along with alumnae from
McAuley’s Music Program and the Office
of Institutional Advancement, organized
and hosted a tribute to Sr. Ellen. “Music
and Memories — A Tribute to Sister Ellen
Marie Ryan, RSM” brought back more
than 60 McAuley choir alumnae to sing
together once more featuring songs they
sang while they were in Sr. Ellen’s Advanced
Chorus and A Capella groups from the
1970s to 2003. The event was attended
by more than 350 alumnae and friends and
raised more than $10,000 to endow the
Sister Ellen Marie Music Scholarship fund.
The first scholarship will be given in 2013
to an incoming freshman student.
Both scholarships welcome your
continued support and donations. If you
are interested in helping these scholarships
grow, you can look on the Ways to Give
page of our website for further information.
The maestro returns to lead us once again!
Girls + Science = GREAT CHEMISTRY!
Construction of the new Chemistry Labs started last April and was completed on time for the
opening of the new school year. The labs are an investment in our students and their futures.
They are unique to the Chicagoland area since they are designed and equipped to exclusively
teach high school girls. The two-story building features two chemistry labs with high-tech
classrooms and prep rooms. The new high-tech classrooms allow students to have hands-on
opportunities to explore content in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.
The new building is a registered Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver
project with many sustainable and energy efficient features. LEED is the nation’s pre-eminent
program for the design, construction and operation of high performance, environmentally
friendly “green” buildings.
You can help to change lives by becoming involved in this exciting, $2 million project. There
are many opportunities to support the project:
• Make a one-time gift of cash or securities to help fund the project
• Give a meaningful gift budgeted over a period of three to five years to fund the project
• Encourage others to make a gift to help fund the project
To make a donation or for more information, please contact the Institutional Advancement
Office at 773-881-6557 or visit mothermcauley.org.
Support in Action
The Mothers Club
The Mother McAuley Mothers Club
seeks to foster good home/school
communication and enriched mother/
daughter relations. Through the Vendor
Fair, Annual Spring Luncheon and Fashion
Show and other social events, the Mothers
Club gives financial support to the school.
All mothers are invited to attend Mothers
Club meetings.
In addition to the fundraising events,
the Mothers Club also sponsors the
following events: mother and daughter
Mass and Reception in the fall, both Open
House marketing events, Senior Father and
Daughter Dance, Graduation Dress Resale

The Annual “Ladies Night Out” Vendor
Fair hosted by the Mothers Club brings in
vendors from the community for a preChristmas shopping event. The Mothers
Club raises money through table fees
for the vendors and a nominal entrance
fee. Patrons can enjoy a delightful evening
while contributing to the fundraising
efforts of the Mothers Club.

Father Daughter Mass
Fathers Club hosts two major
fundraising events and sponsors the
annual Christmas wreath sale:
freshmen family picnic and
tuition raffle
Eight years ago, the Fathers Club began
hosting the Freshmen Family Picnic to
welcome incoming freshmen and their
families. In addition to the food, games and
music provided by the McAuley Fathers
Club, the winner of the Tuition Raffle is
announced that day. The Club sponsors the
Tuition Raffle to raise funds for Financial
Assistance for McAuley students. The
winner of this raffle will have one daughter’s
Mother McAuley tuition paid for the year
or $6,000 cash if the winner does not
choose to take the tuition payment as a
prize. The Fathers Club will pay the current
year’s tuition to the school and all prepaid
tuition is refunded to the winner. Extra
courses and books will not be covered.
The raffle is one of the Fathers Club’s
biggest fundraisers of the year.
Each year the Fathers Club also sponsors
the Christmas wreath sale. You can
purchase all your wreaths and garlands
here at McAuley through the Fathers Club
sale. Your purchase will help to support
the Club’s mission to raise funds for
financial assistance for all of our students.
This past winter, the Fathers Club
hosted Dan Hampton Night. Dan Hampton
is a former NFL player with the Chicago
Bears and he is a proud member of the
Chicago Bear’s 1985 Super Bowl Champions.
Dan spoke to the audience and then
remained to sign autographs and pose for
photos with members of the Fathers Club
and their guests. Proceeds of the event
support Fathers Club efforts.
Alumnae Impact
Alumnae Association and

Michigan city gathering at
mcGinnis Pub
For the second time in as many years,
McAuley alumna, Terry Dugan McGinnis
’68, proprietor of McGinnis Pub, and the
McAuley Alumnae Office co-hosted
a “McGinnis Gathering” of McAuley
alumnae and friends in Michigan City,
Indiana. This is a simple event and a
wonderful time to bring the many alumnae
and friends of McAuley who either
reside full-time or have vacation homes
in the Michigan City/Harbor Country
areas together for a fun time. Our host,
Terry McGinnis supplies all the appetizers,
and guests are able to enjoy the food and
beverages of the restaurant. The idea of
this gathering came from a brainstorming
session with Kathy Flynn Dujcek ’68,
Colleen Kelly ’05, JoAnn Foertch Altenbach
‘76 and Tom Geraghty, Director of
Institutional Advancement. “We wanted to
create an event that would bring McAuley
to a place or destination where McAuley
alumnae and friends have relocated.”
Please look for forthcoming information on
the McGinnis Gathering of July 27, 2013.
Mother McAuley law society
We are pleased to report that a McAuley
Law Society was formed by and for Saint
Xavier Academy and Mother McAuley
alumnae, parents of current students or
alumnae, and any woman or man in the
legal field associated with the Mother
McAuley community. The Law Society
provides opportunities for those in the
field of law to socialize, network and learn
from one another while giving back to
Mother McAuley.
The Law Society’s events include social
networking nights, luncheons, assisting the
Mother McAuley Mock Trial Club and the
development of a mentoring program.
The Law Society was created and is
led by the Law Society Board Members:
Tricia Rooney ‘95, Heather Mulligan Begley
‘95 (Founding President), Kellyn Doyle
Coakley ’94, Kelly Maloney Kachmarik ’94
and Jessica Durkin ’02.
The Law Society and Alumnae
Association co-sponsored a Progressive
Networking Luncheon on May 30, 2012,
at Petterino’s Restaurant in Chicago.
Alumnae gathered together to meet and
connect with other alumnae. Future events
are in the planning stages.
Class of 1961 Celebrates 50th Reunion
On September 23, 2011, the Class of 1961 gathered together at their alma mater to celebrate
the 50th Anniversary of their graduation. This class was the second McAuley class to
complete their entire high school education at the 99th Street Campus. The alumnae enjoyed
an afternoon at the school and the opportunity to share their life stories with their classmates.
Following a wonderful luncheon, they enjoyed a short prayer service in the Mercy Chapel and
a short tour of the building where they were able to see the many spaces that did not exist
when they attended the school. It was a true blessing to welcome these beautiful women back
to their school.
Alumnae Mothers
Chapter continues to
sponsor MACS Ltd.
The mothers of McAuley graduates have
created a chapter of the Mothers Club
for those who choose to continue their
association with McAuley after their
daughters have finished their McAuley
educations. Their mission is raising funds
for student financial aid. Their main
fundraising method is running the
MACS Ltd. The store is run by a staff of
volunteers and led by Marion McFarland
and Sallie King.
Celebrating Achievement
Celebration 2012
The extended family of Mother McAuley
Liberal Arts High School joined together
to honor Mary Kean Coffey ’63 with the
Catherine McAuley Leadership Award;
the Boyle Family (including Kathleen Boyle
Styler ’76, Mary Boyle Weiler ’78, Patricia
Boyle Sundermeir ’77, Therese Boyle-Niego
’82 and Sheila Boyle Nawrocki ’84) with
the Distinguished Alumna Award; and
Father Marty O’Donovan with the
inaugural Sister Agatha O’Brien Catholic
Service Award. This was McAuley’s 25th
Celebration Gala, which is a fantastic event
hosted by the Board of Trustees on an
annual basis to raise funds for the school’s
scholarship endowment fund.
The Catherine McAuley Leadership
Award is named for Catherine McAuley,
a woman dedicated to the service of the
poor, sick and uneducated. She and the
many women who joined her in this work
provided a home rooted in faith and
prayer, and to ensure continuation of this
work, Catherine founded the Sisters of
Mercy. Compassion, leadership in church
and society, and the ability to inspire
others to service and care for others are
the legacy of Catherine McAuley and
qualities exemplified in the recipient of
the award given in her name.
Past Board of Trustees Chair Nancy Hill-Davis and
Dr. Robert Davis
Celebration Honorees: Boyle Family, Rev. Marty O’Donovan and Mary Kean Coffey
The Distinguished Alumna Award is
presented to an alumna or alumnae who
have become women of influence in the
tradition of Catherine McAuley and the
Sisters of Mercy, recognizing these women
for their witness and celebrating them
as role models to the next generation of
McAuley students. Mother McAuley/
Saint Xavier Academy has empowered
more than 24,000 young women to
acknowledge their own giftedness and to
make decisions with a well-developed
moral conscience. We foster an appreciation of the diversity of the global
community and a quest for knowledge
and excellence and lifelong goals. These
women are prepared to live in a complex
and dynamic society. Their education
has taught them how to think creatively,
communicate effectively, and to respond
compassionately to the needs of their
community while assuming roles of
Christian leadership.
The Sister Agatha O’Brien Catholic
Service Award is a new award for Celebration.
Sister Agatha O’Brien, RSM holds a special
place in the history of the Sisters of Mercy
of Chicago and a most significant place in
the history of Mother McAuley High School.
After venturing to Chicago in 1846, a small
group of sisters, under the leadership of
Sister Agatha, visited the sick, offered
religious education for adults and housed
and taught children orphaned by the city’s
cholera epidemic. Eventually, Sister Agatha
and her companions established Chicago’s
first school, naming it St. Francis Xavier
Academy for Females, the precursor of
today’s Mother McAuley High School and
Saint Xavier University. By 1853, Sister
Agatha had founded nine schools, as well as
Mercy Hospital and Orphan Asylum, today’s
Mercy Hospital and Medical Center. Sister
Agatha leaves a legacy of leadership,
courage, perseverance and service to the
sick and those in need of education.

Top Lifetime Donors
In addition to the many recent donors who
made gifts to our organization within the
last school year, we want to recognize those
who have given generously over their lifetime.
Some have given steadily for years, some have
given one-time major or planned gifts, some
have done both. Thank you to the following
benefactors for their extraordinary gifts.

Help McAuley Students
Now and in the Future!
Did you know that by including a charitable gift in your will or estate plan,
you can continue Mother McAuley’s educational mission well into the future?
You can make a difference in the lives of
young women.
You can make a difference by making a planned gift to McAuley. Whether you think
of yourself as rich or poor, or somewhere in the middle, your gift will be effective.
Even a small gift can have a major impact.
Did you know that you can leave your money to your family and to McAuley?
Some people think they must make a decision between leaving a gift to their family
or their favorite charity. You can do both, and some charitable gifts may actually
save your family money by decreasing the amount that they would have to pay for
inheritance taxes.
You can start today!
Make sure that you have an updated will or living trust that reflects your charitable
wishes. Contact your financial advisor, lawyer or accountant to help you in establishing
your plans and charitable gift. You can think beyond cash by leaving stocks, insurance
policies, pension plans, IRA and other personal property. Finally, please inform us of
your intentions in writing so that we can acknowledge your gift.
You can make a planned gift by naming McAuley as a beneficiary in your life insurance
or retirement accounts, as well as including McAuley in your will, trusts or bequests.
Since there are many ways that you can remember McAuley in your estate plans,
we highly recommend that you consult with your legal or financial advisor before you
make a decision.
Life Insurance
Life insurance policies can name
Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High
School as the beneficiary in full or in
part. A gift of whole life insurance can
be made by naming the school as the
irrevocable owner and beneficiary of
the policy. Gifts of life insurance
policies require charitable contributions
from the donor to Mother McAuley in
the amount of any premiums, including
unscheduled premiums, which may
become due.
retirement accounts
Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs)
or company plans, like life insurance
proceeds, may be left to Mother McAuley
by naming us as beneficiary.
Trusts, wills and bequests
You can include Mother McAuley
Liberal Arts High School in your will or
trust, including living trusts and charitable
remainder trusts. We recommend
these provisions be discussed with your
attorney and tax advisor.

Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School is named for Mother Mary Catherine McAuley, the woman who
founded the religious community of the Sisters of Mercy. Mother McAuley, formerly Catherine Elizabeth McAuley,
was born in Ireland in the late 18th century. Catherine McAuley lived with a wealthy couple following the death of
her parents. Upon the death of this couple, she inherited their large estate. Recognizing the needs of the sick and
poor in Ireland, Catherine chose to use this inheritance to help others. She opened the House of Mercy in Dublin,
Ireland to help house and educate poor young women. Catherine founded the Sisters of Mercy because she wished
to see this work continue. Other young women joined her new community so that together they could serve the
poor, the sick and those in need of education. Today, all over the world, the Sisters of Mercy, along with committed
lay women and men, follow in Catherine’s footsteps by offering mercy-filled service to others in need.

McAuley Hall Induction and
All-School Reunion
November 2, 2013
Loving God, you chose Catherine McAuley for the service of your people
who are poor, sick and uneducated. You inspired her to found the
Institute of Mercy so that these good works might endure. Give to each
of us, her daughters and friends, a portion of her compassionate spirit
and an ardent desire to serve your suffering people. Bless all our
undertakings and grant that union and charity may always thrive among
us. Graciously hear our prayer for Catherine, and by granting the favors
we ask through her intercession, hasten the day when her sanctity will
be celebrated by all the church. Amen
