IMAGE OF BOGDAN KHMELNITSKY IN THE RUSSIAN LITERATURE / Horlivka Institute of Foreign Languages
The poetonyms Bogdan and Khmel as semantically capacious means of creating the historical image of the Ukrainian
hetman Bogdan Khmelnitsky are analyzed in the article. Russian romanticists mythologized this historical image
developing the model of a warrior and hero, a leader, given to his nation by God. The poetonyms in the majority of works
the historical character too. They reveal the main idea of the romantic interpretation of the image. The folkloric nickname
Khmel is the most important image-beaving feature of the historical character, which gives an idea of the real attitude of
the nation to the character, about his temper.
