Penn State Coach Casey Cunningham Thanks
the NLWC for Its Service to Our Sport
The following letter from Casey makes clear how the NLWC continues to support wrestling at all levels in Central, Pennsylvania
even as it has become the most successful Regional Olympic Training Center in the USA.
Dear Nittany Lion Wrestling Club Members:
As the guest writer for this update to the NLWC members I just want to say a big Thank You for everything you do
for this club. We have an unbelievable club that cannot be matched anywhere in the country. We also have a designated
Olympic Regional Training Center here which allows the guys that are employed by the NLWC a place to train. The
regional training center here at Penn State just won the Regional Cup in Las Vegas at the U.S. Open. This is given to the
training center that scores the most points with the guys that train at their facility. There is no place in the country
doing what we are doing right now with our freestyle club. Guys are able to live and train full time in State College at the
Regional Training Center and then are able to represent the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club in the events they wrestle in.
The support that you the members have given us allow our guys a very unique situation.
The NLWC offers incredible experiences for young wrestlers/kids in our community as well. I signed my kids up this
past year for the Fitness and Balance, Beginning Wrestling, and the Advanced Youth Wrestling programs offered by the
NLWC. Here is a list of the coaches that my 3 boys had through these programs:
Jake Varner-Olympic Champion, 3rd in the World Championship, 4x NCAA Finalist
Franklin Gomez-World Silver Medal, NCAA Champion, 3x All-American
Jaime Espinal-Olympic Silver Medalist
Quentin Wright- 4x All-American, 2x NCAA Champion, U.S. Open All-American
Les Sigman-World Team Member, 4 x NCAA D2 Champion
Mark McKnight-Pan Am Champion, NCAA All-American, U.S. Open All-American
Nick Fanthorpe-NCAA All-American
John Fritz-NCAA Champion and Big 10 and NCAA Coach of the Year
Dave Hart-2x NCAA All-American
These are the guys that were coaching these young kids so it was an amazing opportunity for the community to take
advantage of. Again these guys are here because of your generous support. With a few exceptions these guys are also
allowed to work out with our college guys per NCAA rules so that is a huge advantage to our guys. We also just recently
welcomed three new resident athletes, Frank Molinaro (4x All-American, NCAA Champion), Ed Ruth (First 3x National
Champion in school history) and David Taylor (4x NCAA Finalist, 2x NCAA Champion). Like I mentioned above we are
very thankful that we have the opportunity to allow these guys to stick around and train to reach their goals of being
World and Olympic Champions while making the Penn State Wrestlers tougher along the way. We hope that we will be
able to continue to allow young men to have a place to train to reach their goals and also provide an opportunity for
people in this community to take advantage of the talent we have here.
Yours, with Many Thanks,
Casey Cunningham

NLWC Resident Athletes Include Many 2015 World Team and 2016 Olympic
Hopefuls: Varner and Ruth on USA World Team to Compete for 2014
World Titles in Uzbekistan, September, 8-14, 2014.
A simple listing of this year’s (2013’14)
Resident Athletes and their major
achievements makes clear their
extraordinary international visibility as
a group as well as their collective ability
to inspire and teach the elementary,
high-school, and collegiate wrestlers
they work with in NLWC programs.
The NLWC individual performances
earned the team title at the US
Open Championships in Vegas (by
outscoring all other USA Wrestling’s
approved Regional Olympic Training
Centers).
Continuing Resident Athletes:
2012 Olympic Champ, 2014 US Open
Champ and winner of US World Team
Trials, Jake Varner just qualified for
the US World Team that will vie for
World Championships this September
in Tashkent, Uzbekistan at 97 kgs (213
lbs). At the World Team Trials, former
NCAA Champ for Kent State, Dustin
Kilgore won the right to challenge
Varner. Varner beat Kilgore 7-2, 5-2.
The Nittany Lion Wrestling Club Newsletter
is published & distributed free of charge
to all club members in recognition of their
support of the NLWC Program.

New Resident Athletes:
Recent collegiate graduates have
already proven themselves World and
Olympic Team contenders. Several did
extremely well against world elites at
the US Open Wrestling Championships
in Las Vegas, April 16-19 and then in
the final 2014 USA World Team Trials
in early June, in Madison, Wisconsin.
Jake Varner beat Kilgore
in World Team Trials Final.
Varner also finished ahead of J.D.
Bergman who was on last year’s USA
World Team.
2012 Olympic Silver Medalist Jaimie
Espinal has recently restarted his
training towards a spot on Puerto
Rico’s World Team. Puerto Rico’s
World Silver Medalist and Olympian
Franklin Gomez is currently ranked
#2 in the world at 65 kgs (143 lbs).
Former USA World Teamer, Les
Sigman is currently recovering from
injury and will be back in the hunt for
a place on the 2015 USA World Team
at 125 kgs (275.5 lbs.)
2014 US Open Placers, Mark
McKnight 7th, and Nick Fanthorpe
4th at 57 (125 lbs) and 65 kgs (143
lbs). In May, Fanthorpe also won the
NE Regional title with a TF in East
Stroudsburg. This qualified him for the
World Team Trials where he finished
4th.
Quentin Wright, was winless in
his first outing at the World Trials at
86 kgs (189 lbs), but has shown in
earlier matches against world-class
opponents that he, too, can be a force.
He placed 7th in Vegas with a 5-2
record. His dominating win over this
year’s World Team runner up, Dustin
Kilgore, in the 2013 NCAA finals is a
better clue to his potential.
2
Ed Ruth faces off with Keith Gavin.
Ed Ruth, Penn State’s first-ever 3X
NCAA Champ, placed 3rd at 86 kgs
(189 lbs)behind former Pitt star Keith
Gavin and long-time USA World Team
contender, Clayton Foster who edged
him 13-12 in a donnybrook at the US
Open in Vegas. But at the final World
Team Trials, it was Ruth who beat
Foster in the final and finished ahead
of Gavin, Chris Perry and John Reader.
That’s a remarkable break-through for
someone who didn’t focus on freestyle
until after the NCAAs last March.
He’ll join Jake Varner on the 2014
USA World Team Championships this
September in Uzbekistan.
David Taylor, in the Open,
dominated three opponents at 74 kgs
(163 lbs) -- with a TF, Fall, and a 4-0
shutout of Tyler Caldwell -- before
dropping a 6-7 decision in the final on
a late takedown by 3X World, and 2012
Olympic Champ, Jordan Burroughs.
Taylor got another shot at Burroughs
in the June USA World Team Trials,
after beating Andrew Howe, but lost
to Burrowes again 2-6 and 5-6. The
latest Amateur Wrestling News had
a great cover photo highlighting the
muscle tension in both wrestlers
during intense combat throughout the
Open final. AWN envisions a new epic
rivalry between Taylor and Burroughs
through at least the next two Olympic
cycles. Taylor and Burroughs, with
mutual respect, agree on the rivalry,
but not on how it might end.
and finished

of
Angel
Zain
Retherford,
now
a
sophomore, competed in the
Junior World Team Trials and went
4-0 at 66kgs (145.5 lbs) in the
challenge rounds, before losing to
Aaron Pico in the final.
David Taylor beats World Metalist
at “Beat The Streets”.
2. Ruth and Taylor won outdoor,
nationally televised, challenge
matches between USA and World
All-Stars on a closed street in Times
Square on May 7. USA Wrestling
has been producing such “Beat the
Steet” matches for the past few years
to promote interest in Freestyle
wrestling. Prior to the WorldClass Elite matches, preliminary
bouts between young men and
women from New York City still
learning freestyle were featured.
The US won eight of the 11 All
Star matches, three of which were
wrestled by World-Class women. In
the final and feature match of the
day at 74 kgs, USA’s reigning World
and Olympic Champion, Jordan
Burrowes , pinned Russia’s Alsamaz
Sanakoev. There were no matches
at 96 and 126kgs. Taylor shut out
Azerbaijan’s former World Bronze
Medalist, 6-0 at 74 kgs. Ruth TF’d
a Spanish All Star, 10-0, at 86 kgs.
3. Several other returning collegians
also competed in the US Open in
April under the NLWC banner.
Freshmen Garrett Hammond
went 6-3 at 74kgs, and Cody Law
5-3 at 70kgs. Both placed 8th In
the Junior Open. Freshman Matt
McCutcheon also looked good at
86 kgs. In the senior Open, Matt
Brown went 3-2 at 86 kgs, James
Vollrath (graduate) 2-2 at 70 kgs,
Zach Beitz and Cade Moss (from
South Jordan, Utah), both went 1-2
at 65 kgs, and Jordan Conaway
went 1-2 at 57kgs.

Molinaro celebrates win over Humphrey.
Frank Molinaro, Penn State’s NCAA
Champ at 149 in 2013, has given up
his Assistant Coaching position at
Rutgers to become an NLWC Resident
Athlete. He placed 4th in his first US
Open behind Logan Stieber. He moved
up to #3 in the World Team Trials
with an impressive 7-2 win over Reece
Humphrey at 65 kgs (143 lbs). He also
beat NCAA Champ and 4X Big 10
Champ Kellen Russell.
Three Other Notes:
Two collegiate wrestlers who are not
Resident Athletes but competed in the
World Team Trials for the NLWC.
1. Nico Megaliudis, now a Senior,
finished 4th at 57 kgs (125.5
lbs) behind Tony Ramos, Matt
McDouough, and Sam Hazewinkle,
but Nico scored wins over Nick
Simmons, Brandon Precin (who
beat McDonough), Zach Sanders,
USA All-Star “Beat the Street” team in Times Square.

School Program Enrollments 2013-14 Remain Strong.
Recent Newsletter emphasis on successes by our Regional Olympic Training Center Resident Athletes does not imply
any diminished commitment to training for primary and secondary school youngsters in our NLWC School under the
direction of both NLWC coaches and Resident Athletes. The opportunity for School members to meet and work with the
RAs has substantially added to their excitement about joining our School programs. Since last summer, total enrollment
in our School Programs is over 400. We thank all our registrants and their parents for participating in our efforts to
promote our sport, and to help young wrestlers achieve whatever goals they set for themselves.
The Programs:
Fitness and Balance – for pre-schoolers – 3rd-graders for four weeks.
Gives both boys and girls a chance to enjoy dynamic, fun workouts, including drills and games, to help them develop
balance, strength, and confidence in many body movements. We do not teach wrestling moves and there is no wrestling
contact. The main goal is to help the kids have fun developing physical and mental skills. Having fun is a useful prolog
to the following programs.
Youth Rec Program – for beginning wrestlers, K – 6th-grade, for 6 weeks.
Wrestling is a great foundation for all sports. This program is non-competitive. It does, however, emphasize basic
wrestling skills. .

Junior and Senior High-School
Pre-Season Training –
For six weeks.
Emphasis on perfecting existing techniques, learning
new ones, and doing more live wrestling with more
attention to individualized instruction.
Winter Breakfast Club –
For six weeks.
Hard workouts for Junior and Senior High School
wrestlers looking for additional instruction as well as
opportunities to work with more challenging workout
partners in preparation for district, regional, and state
tourneys ahead. These 1½-hour sessions give some
attention to drilling but greater attention to live wrestling
featuring situational techniques for specific positions,
and round-robin live matches. It makes clear how only
dedicated and hardworking work-out partners can make
each other better.

NLWC Teams Up With Decker Tape Products to Produce a Successful 2014
State College Wrestling Tournament Last March
This Tournament, now managed primarily by the NLWC, under the current leadership of Tournament Director Dave Hart,
has long been a major opportunity for youngsters -- from the age of six up to Senior High Schoolers -- to test themselves
against opponents well beyond their own districts. It the largest One-Day Open Tournament in the East. It serves as a
qualifier for both the Ohio “Tournament of Champions” and the “Top 100 Tournament.” It reflects the commitment of
the NLWC to providing wrestlers at all levels with opportunities for developmental competition.
In spite of a substantial snowstorm before the Sunday event, well over 1, 000 wrestlers showed up. The NLWC cannot
list all the volunteers it took to plan and manage the event, to sit at scoring tables, run mat scores to the match makers
at the head tables, and to supply hospitality services. But we can at least express our gratitude to all who did so much to
keep the event on schedule, the records straight, and the workers fed.

2014 NittaNy LioN WrestLiNg CLub goLf CLassiC [registration form p.10]
The Nittany Lion Wrestling Club (NLWC) would like to invite you to participate in the 2014 NLWC Golf Classic on Saturday,
August 2, 2014 at the Mountain View Country Club.
For the first time in many, many years, the NLWC has decided to change the location of the annual Golf Classic. The Mountain
View Country Club was operated as the Elks Country Club until the spring of 2012 when new ownership revitalized the facility
by upgrading both the golf experience and the club house. Nestled among the hills and offering panoramic views of Tussey
Mountain and Mount Nittany, it is now considered one of the best golf courses in the area. The Mountain View Country Club
(100 Elks Club Road, Boalsburg, PA 16827) is located across Rt. 322 from the Tussey Mountain Ski Slope.
Proceeds from the NLWC Golf Classic help provide training expenses for NLWC Resident Athletes. This enables the NLWC to
bring top international wrestlers to live and train in Central PA. The NLWC Golf Classic has been one of the primary fund raising
activities for the NLWC for the past 20 years. In addition, participants have the opportunity to spend a day with NLWC wrestlers,
coaches, friends, and other wrestling fans.
The NLWC Golf Classic is a four-person scramble with a 9:00am shotgun start. Each player must contribute 2 drives (par 3
holes excluded). You can choose to register your own team or let our committee pair you with other golfers. Since 2002, we
have awarded four hole-in-one prizes including new automobiles and other exciting gifts.
The registration fee is $175 per golfer and includes: cart, greens fees, continental breakfast & lunch on the greens, social and
dinner buffet immediately following the tournament, tournament shirts, and lots of team and door prizes! To register, please
complete and return the registration form or go to www.nittanylionwrestlingclub.com and complete your registration on-line.
Sponsorship opportunities are also available. For sponsorship opportunities, please contact Dave Hart at (814) 574-7799 or at
[email protected], or you can also visit www.nittanylionwrestlingclub.com and complete a sponsorship form on-line.
Sincerely,
Grace and Sam Condo, (814) 353-4545 or [email protected]
About the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club
The Nittany Lion Wrestling Club’s goal is to be the premier wrestling club in the United States! The NLWC has been designated
as a U.S. Olympic Regional Training Center and conducts practices in the Penn State Wrestling Room in the Lorenzo Wrestling
Complex.
The goal of the NLWC Golf Classic is to raise money specifically for the Club’s Resident Athlete Program. The Resident
Athlete Program is comprised of elite wrestlers whom the NLWC coaching staff has recruited to live in Central Pennsylvania and
train at the NLWC Regional Olympic Training Center. This program is designed to provide the coaching, training environment,
and financial support necessary for these individuals to compete for and win Olympic and World Championships. It is working
as designed.
Jake Varner won a Gold Medal for the U.S., and Jaime Espinal won a Silver Medal for Puerto Rico in the last Olympics. Franklin
Gomez was a World Silver Medalist, and several other Resident Athletes have recently won or placed high at numerous national
and international competitions. The Resident Athletes who are competing for the NLWC during the 2013-14 Season are Mark
McKnight, Franklin Gomez, Jaime Espinal, Quentin Wright, Jake Varner, and Les Sigman.
®
In addition to these fine wrestlers, the NLWC will be adding two new wrestlers, David Taylor and Ed Ruth, to its Resident
Athlete Program in early summer, 2014. David and Ed recently finished their outstanding college wrestling careers by capturing
National Titles for Penn State and leading the Penn State Wrestling program to its 4th consecutive national title.
The above athletes are coached by Cael Sanderson, Cody Sanderson, Casey Cunningham, and Nick Fanthorpe whom
comprise the NLWC Resident Athlete Program and U.S. Olympic Regional Training Center coaching staff. These coaches are
widely recognized as the best in the world and have done an incredible job of developing the wrestlers in the Resident Athlete
Program.
Support for the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club
We hope that you will consider supporting the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club through the Golf Classic. It is because of your
generous support over the past several years that the NLWC is able to sponsor the Resident Athlete Program and enable these
fine young men to pursue their dreams of becoming Olympic and World Champions! As they pursue this goal, the Resident
Athletes make every wrestler (both collegiate and scholastic) in the NLWC’s Olympic Regional Training Center better, and
this will enable the cycle to continue. With your support, the NLWC can continue to add the top wrestlers in the country to its
Resident Athlete Program.
The Club is very, very excited to have David Taylor and Ed Ruth join the Resident Athlete Program for the upcoming year!
We will do all that we can to give them and our other Resident Athletes the opportunity to win Olympic and World
Championships!
