The FMA Informative brings you the book launch of Punong Lakan Garitony C. Nicolas 30th book “100
Filipino Martial Artists” which was held on January 19, 2013. The best thing is to let the Vice President of the
MAMFMA tell you a little about the book and the idea behind the book.
Ken Magno - Vice President, MAMFMA
In his 30th book, “100 Filipino Martial Artists”, Punong Lakan
Garitony C. Nicolas has selected one hundred of special, living, Filipino
individuals recognized for their contributions in strengthening and
promoting the Filipino martial arts and its culture that is popularly
known as Arnis, Eskrima, and Kali. As Nicolas had already paid tribute
to passed heroes and legends during the event of the First Philippine
Martial Arts Hall Of Fame on April 21~22, 2012 in Manila, Philippines,
this time, he describes true-to-life people who have actually achieved
in their own way the mission of the Modern Arnis Mano-Mano Filipino
Martial Arts (MAMFMA) organization founded by Nicolas which states:
“As a Filipino martial art, it is committed to foster nationalism, instilling
social concerns and political awareness, and participating actively in
community developments. The mission of the MAMFMA organization
is twofold: foremost, to regain the lost glory of the art as an international
sport and martial art and restore in every Filipino’s heart its cultural heritage and indigenous value; secondly, to
advance the camaraderie of Arnis practitioners under one roof and one goal and leadership without losing their
identity as a style, system, or affiliation.
Therefore, not only Grandmasters, Masters, Instructors, and Practitioners are included in this book, but
also advocates, devotees, supporters, and promoters have been given appreciation for their efforts of uplifting
the Filipino martial arts.
Even before the passing of the bill that had now become the Republic Act 9850 of the Philippines also
known as the “Arnis Law” that would somehow standardize and stabilize the sport and martial art; some of the
exceptional people listed in this book have already attempted to reconcile and unite the diversified principles
and systems of the Philippine combative arts through peaceful means for love of country and devotion to its
culture.”
The truth is… 100 FMArtists is not enough! There are hundreds more, if not thousands, who strive for a mission
similar to that of the MAMFMA which just gives good reason for a sequel to this book. And so, to the reader,
this book serves as an inspiration as well as a challenge in doing your part to support the Filipino martial arts;
and maybe then become part of the sequel.
Mabuhay ang FMA!

Have you ever heard of these styles Balintawak, Modern Arnis, Lightning
Scientific, Kali Ilustrisimo and others? Well if you do you are a practitioner
or an aficionado of our own martial art the Filipino martial arts. Did you
also know that our very own art is also used for fight scenes in Hollywood
movies such as Bourne Identity, The Hunted and others because our style is
very efficient and effective for fight stunts especially in close range combat.
Most foreigners think that Filipino martial arts is only about Sticks, Blades
and Knives. But, little did they know that there are other Filipino martial
arts here in our country. There is Sikaran and Yaw Yan - a distinct Filipino
martial arts that involves hand and foot fighting. And Dumog - the Filipino
style of wrestling while standing upright and refers to the grappling aspect
of Filipino martial arts, and many more.
This was made with hardship and endless effort to help and promote the
Filipino martial arts making this the first in the history of Filipino martial arts Community that gives recognition to the 100 Filipino Martial Artists in the country and all over the world, courtesy of Punong Lakan Garitony
Nicolas - the Father of Modern Sinawali and Founder of Modern Arnis Mano -Mano Filipino Martial Arts
(Pang-Oran System).
This book is all about 100 Filipino Martial Artists that are consists of Black Belts, Masters, Grandmasters and aficionado of the Art. After reading this book you will know their brief history, background in their own
Art and Contribution to the Filipino martial arts community.
The author of this book would like inspire a lot of people – Young and Old, Current and Future Grandmasters, Filipinos and Foreigners alike. May all Filipinos be proud of our own Martial Arts!
Pugay!

Even though I was not able to be in the Philippines for
the opening of the book release of the 100 FMA Book. I
am deeply honored as a Filipino that I am in the 100 Filipino Martial Arts Book. It show that out of 42 years plus
of Filipino martial arts training that I have trained and
still continued to train and teach/share/propogate to others of my Filipino martial arts and the Philippine Culture.
I am very happy and proud that someone like PL Nicolas
does this to share the world of 100 Filipino martial artists
talents and experience. This in regards to myself and also
Expose and share the culture of the Philippines Arts that
is now time due to respect of its own martial arts.
Maraming Salamat, Mabuhay, and Pugay - Long Live FMA
Master Jose Isidro of Isidro Modern Arnis
I think it is a very noble deed for PL Pet Nicholas to recognized the different Filipino Martial Artists by publishing a book containing their brief profiles irregardless of
which style they belong. .Most of the time, recognitions
are given, when the Masters has passed away. This way,
persons involved can still appreciate the “tribute” given
to them. It is also a great way of promoting the different
styles of FMA. All the best to PL Pet Nicholas and a well
deserve
Congratulations!
Master Bella Marie ‘Peachie’ Saguin
Kalis Ilustrisimo
Arriving ahead of time for the launching of book, I sat down
and wait for the program to start. Five practitioners that were
featured in the book were called upon, one at a time to the
stage to speak they were: The Publisher and Owner of central
Book store Professor A. Soteco, Engr. Diaz, Grandmaster
Bong Jornales, and myself.
After the initial event a few people came up asking for my
signature in their book. I felt like a superstar especially when
I heard a couple of the people were for one a gentleman from
Global FMA “The Bladed Hand”.
As it was getting late I expected that it would be possible to
also demonstrate my art of cultural creative anyo of Docena Corto Teradas and had 3 students with me to demonstrate, unfortunately due to the time it was not possible.
The book is of good quality, the contents are brief on each Filipino martial arts practitioner with their
picture. It was also announced that there will be 2nd book of another 100 FMA practitioners open to all practitioners of the Filipino martial arts.

principles of being true martial artists and the proper holding of the sticks.

day he dies.
b. The Arnisador and sticks are one.
c. The art of the hand is the art of the cane.
d. If someone throws, rice to a skilled Arnisador not even
a single grain can hit him.
e. The match and a candle represent an authentic disciple
of Arnis.
f. The Art of Arnis is like a wind; you can feel it but not
necessarily see it.
g. Minimum effort maximum effect.
h. The triumph of a genuine Arnisador is like to a mountain.
i. The best Arnisador is one who can give wisdom to his
student regarding the essence of being a real Arnisador.
Espada y Daga is another form of play in arnis or kali. This book was published by Punong Lakan for the training guide of his members at the Modern Arnis Mano-Mano Filipino Martial Arts. Espada y Daga is used by a long weapon and a short weapon or a sword

ordinary combat fighting. Your sword or your stick becomes the extension of your arms. With or without it your
movement will be concise and precise. This book will be
a helpful guide because of the various illustrations that the
author painstakingly collated, while practitioners will be
astonished by the book’s depth of details and forms.
Sistemang Pang-Oran (Arnis Kickboxing System - ARKIBOS) The Sistemang Pang-oran of Arnis was developed
since I started my way of teaching the art of stick fighting.
This is not only for competition purpose but for a better and deeper understanding of the Art. My devotion and
dedication for the art, Sistemang Pang-oran was developed.
I would like to stress that without my students I cannot
develop the Sistemang Pang-oran. I am just like a composer
who needs inspiration to be able to compose a song or a
painter to be able to paint.

and knowledge of magic. The eagle has an ability to see
hidden spiritual truths, rising above the material to see the
spiritual. The eagle has an ability to see the overall pattern,
