CORVETTE NEWS
Currently Canada’s only Corvette Club
listed in CORVETTE NEWS, The
Corvette Club of Ontario.
Begun in March, 1962, currently has over
30 members. John A. Morrison, club’s
Secretary, describes the club’s initial event,
an outing. "Undaunted by afternoon’s
nippy bite, the convertible owners bravely
de-topped". And the club’s first rally, John
recounts, "Luckily, the day dawned clear,
for several of the participants in the club
were in enough of a fog as it was. Bungles
and boggles were common, but everyone
involved had fun.”
They joined NCCC early in 1964. Their
emblem combines traditional corvette
script, crossed flags (from the 327 engine
emblem) and the uniquely Canadian
Maple Leaf.
Due to many complaints in the past and its
p o t e n t i a l r e p e r c u s s i o n s, u n d e r n o
circumstances should any C.C.O. Member or a
member of ANY corvette club attending one
of our events, be found to purposely race their
engines, peel rubber, or make any other out-of
the ordinary noises with their corvette. This
sort of behavior can frighten children or adults
and can lead to being a very dangerous stunt
that could easily get out of control. If an
accident should happen, our club could be
sued along with the dealership or any
sponsor(s) who may be supporting the event,
let alone the fact that someone could be
seriously injured!
We expect all our membership to respect this
ruling at all times!

Hello folks, its that time of the year again - Resolution
time. Instead of making all those resolutions that you
will never keep, like losing weight or to quit smoking,
just keep it simple like I do...plan to come out to more
Club events this year and have fun.
Keep it simple and you can't go wrong. From doing it
year after year, I guarantee 2010 will be your best year
ever...

HAPPY NEW YEAR...and welcome to the social side of CCO!
It was a cold night in Toronto, but forty six hardy souls
decided to brave the cold and join their buddies at Dooly's
on Jane St. for our first social of the year.
“Have Fun” was the theme as partners were selected by a
sophisticated draw system, and table numbers elected, then
we had to do it all over again due to electrical problems.
But despite the various problems, the tournament finally
started, and the click of cue against ball was soon, loud and
clear.
After a while the food arrived, and was dispatched in short
order, the play continued, and then we were down to the final
games.
The results; The overall winners……….. Norm Walsh
and partner Meiling, after a play off with Don Michael and
partner Sandy Goba.
Runners up: Lorne Goba and partner Mike Maguire,
(Lorne lost his original partner, Kym Maguire, and Mike
stepped up). Their playoff was with Al Boughton and his
partner Dhonnie Papke.
So congratulations and gifts were handed out to the
victors.
After that it was time to wrap it up and head for home.
I hope that those who came out did have fun, and will
attempt another social event. See you at the next
event in February: Bowling @ Planet Bowl
on Eglington Ave.

CCO Member Car Spotlight
1988 SPECIAL EVENTS CORVETTE PACE CAR
Built as a Pace Car by owner Michael Maguire
(CCO member) and D&R Electronics - custom
installing 12 strobe lights for the P.A.C.E.R.
Program - Police And Community Educating
Racers a program to reduce street racing. This was
the first domestic vehicle involved in the program,
that was not a Police vehicle and after the graphics,
it was now ready to go.
The Pace Car was first introduced to the media at
Canada’s Wonderland along with Police Forces
from the OPP, Metro Toronto, York Region, Peel
and Durham Regions.
The Pace Car was placed on display with the Police
vehicles at several track events at Mosport and
Toronto Motor Speedway and in 2003 at the
Colossus Theater for the premiere of the movie 2
Fast 2 Furious, again with the Police vehicles to
help educate people about the dangers of street
racing. In 2003 the Pace Car lead the NOPI Tour to
Atlanta Motor Speedway for Performance Auto &
Sound Magazine and was displayed on the track
infield.
at grand openings, in front of stages at concerts, the
CNE Canadian National Exhibition, the Rogers
Centre (SkyDome) for the Canadian International
Autoshow in 2007 and 2008 also Performance
World in 2009. It has appeared in 73 parades of
which it has lead 62 of them with many VIPs as
passengers in the Pace Car at events such as
festivals, Veterans Parades, Canada Day and
Santa Claus Parades, with many more to come in
the future.
In 2007 it lead the Northern Leg of the NOPI Tour
again from Toronto to Atlanta Motor Speedway for
Performance Auto & Sound Magazine and our
sponsors BF Goodrich Tires and LUCAS Oil,
leading over 70 vehicles from the Maritimes,
Quebec, Ontario and the northern USA. On that
tour we picked up several more sponsors SSBC
Stainless Steel Brake Corporation, SPI Racing,
Dynamat and OPTIMA Batteries to go along with
our original sponsors D&R Electronics Highland
Chevrolet Cadillac and Upper Canada Signs.
Most recently it has been used to promote a Breast
Cancer Fundraiser that Diane and I had done in
2008 and 2009 for the Cancer Program at Southlake
Regional Health Centre in Newmarket raising
$10,650.00.

Book Review
The Cobra in the Barn, Great Stories of
Automotive Archaeology
By Tom Cotter, Published by Motorbooks, 2005
So what's a gearhead to do all winter but dream
about finding that elusive '67 Stingray tucked away
forgotten in some musty old barn. Well, that's
exactly what this book is all about. Road & Track
contributor Tom Cotter has compiled a number of
great stories about real documented rare “barn
finds” in this book.
There aren't many muscle cars in this book those are
reserved for the sequel, “The Hemi in the Barn” but
there are lots of hot rods, lost race cars and exotics.
For reading entertainment on a cold night, I give this
book 3½ stars out of 5!

Of course, some of those forgotten cars are going to
be rusted out '74 Pintos or some other kind of
rubbish but there are still a whole lot of hidden
jewels out there waiting to be discovered. How a
one-of-a-kind 1929 Rolls Royce Springfield
Phantom I built for the famous actress Marlene
Dietrich which turned up in a garage on a Colorado
ranch? Or the Zagato-bodied Maserati which
disappeared from the San Fernando valley in
California only to turn up behind a brick wall in a
little town in Sicily where the Godfather was
filmed?
And then, of course, there are the Cobras. The 149th
Cobra ever built was found in an Indiana barn and
the ownership was traced back to a chemist who
was one of the developers of Prozac. I guess he
came up with the happy pill so everyone could feel
like he did driving that beast!

Sad News
In Memoriam
It is with great sadness we
announce the passing of Donna
Gateley, wife of late CCO
member Stan Gateley. Donna
passed away on January 25,
2010 from a heart attack at the
age of 69. For those long time
CCO members, we have fond
memories of Stan and Donna
hosting their summer poolside
Molson Indy parties for the Club.
Donna leaves behind her only
son, Brandon. Our thoughts are
with him in this tragic time.

Scottsdale 2010...Turbulent Times ?
I'm sure many of you were tuned into Speed commencing
th
th
January 20 through 24 to catch the Auction Action and
witness some unplanned antics by unusual severe weather
that took a major toll on the Russo and Steele Auction and
the Silver Auction. Barrett-Jackson was fortunate and had
only minor issues with some vendor tents and the auction
ran without any major delays. Russo and Steele however
suffered major damages to both tents and a number of
vehicles and remained out of business until Sunday
morning. I have viewed some explicit photos of many
damaged cars at Russo and Steele and some I'm certain will
be a total loss. In addition Russo and Steele actually had one
tent relocate itself onto Route 101 which is a major highway
for the area and their main auction tent was severely
damaged. Silver had tents blow down but was back in
business late Friday afternoon.
Like the weather, there was turbulence evident with a
number of what may have been previously considered “safe
investment benchmark cars” as Big Block Mid Year Vettes,
Z28 Camaros, Hemi anythings and certain Hot Rods
showed weakened prices from a year ago and struggled to
bring strong dollars for their sellers. It was evident that
anything without a strong pedigree and documentation
would not support any serious sale money. A number of cars
clearly feel into this scenario and couple of choice
examples that are fresh in my mind were a 67 BB Vette
Roadster which looked to be very nicely finished and had a
non numbers matching 400 horse engine and no NCRS
accreditation …. Car barely got to $ 68 k which a year ago
this car still would have brought a $ 100 k. The seller
probably had more than that invested in his restoration
efforts.
One Hot Rod that really stuck in my mind as severely
under sold was a Red 33 Ford Three Window which was
painted and interior fabricated by Ed “Big Daddy” Roth.
This vehicle sold for less than $ 30k and is a true period
rod that showed nicely. In my mind this car may have
been the biggest bargain at Barrett-Jackson.
Other cars that must have left disappointment with the
sellers were the 57 Nomad that didn't make $ 60k and the
56 Chrysler full custom wagon from FJ Customs in BC
which pulled only $ 175 k. This car has won virtually
every award there is and noted collector Ron Pratt stole
that car. I thought that car would have pulled nothing less
than $ 250 k.
The high tech “Resto Mod” trend continues to strengthen
and just about anything that blends nostalgia with modern
is hot and will probably continue to remain so for the
foreseeable future. We aging boomers want comfort,
power, reliability and looks, so take a Chevy Shoe Box or
Chevelle, add some LS power, A/C, P/S and big Brakes ,
custom chassis and suspension and you have retro and
modern technology blended into one. No wonder these
cars are holding in the $ 100 k plus range.
Regular Muscle Cars also showed stronger interest and
some surprises with firmer numbers being generated were
442 Olds, Buick GS and Mustang Mach Ones with some
examples fetching well north of $ 100 k. These cars have

stolen some of the thunder of the Z28's, Boss 302
Mustangs, Shelbys etc. and are allowing more of the mid
stream hobbyist to participate and perhaps realize some
investment staying power while still enjoying their rides.
It was evident at BJ Scottsdale that if you wanted to get
into the hobby you could find some decent entry level
Musclecars and certain rods from the upper $ 20's and
above. There was literally something for every taste and
pocketbook.
Top sale at the BJ auction wasn't even a car but a 1929
Hamilton Aircraft which sold for $671,000 (including
bidders premium). This sale outdistanced the next closest
car, a 64 Shelby Cobra, by over $ 200 k.
Overall, I am of the opinion that our hobby is still in good
shape however trends are definitely continuing to change
and what may be hot today maybe not tomorrow. Anyone
with what may be considered an investment grade car

market will be unsettled until we have well cleared
ourselves of the economic mayhem of the past eighteen
months. Be prepared to drive your cars and enjoy them,
and if you want to do some hot rod stuff, do it.
I'm of the opinion that if you find a nice clone in your price
range consider buying it, I refer to the stunning 67 GTX
Convertible that was restored and transplanted with the
Hemi, only a clone in the sense that the Hemi was added, as
it was a real GTX. To me that is a very nice driver with lots
of curb appeal ! It was well bought at just under $ 50 k.
I think I may Resto Mod my 67 Coupe …. Not !

team (of horses), the
automobilist must stop off-side
and cover his machine with a

penalty for violation is $10 for

A Love Letter
To my darling husband,
Before you return from your business trip I just want to let you know about the small accident I had
with the pick up truck when I turned into the driveway.
Fortunately it’s not too bad and I really didn't get hurt, so please don't worry too much about me.
I was coming home from Wal-Mart, and when I turned into the driveway I accidentally pushed
down on the accelerator instead of the brake. The garage door is slightly bent but the pick up
fortunately came to a halt when it bumped into your Corvette.
I am really sorry, but I know with your kind-hearted personality you will forgive me.You know how
much I love you and care for you my sweetheart. I am enclosing a picture for you.
