That’s how long Red was kept awake by the voices. There were
thousands of them, thousands of relentless cries that never ceased.
For over two weeks straight Red was their slave, relinquished of his
free will. For over two weeks straight Red was their puppet, forced
to carry out their every command. Day in and day out he traveled
across the land, directed only by the thousands of voices in his head.
They denied him sleep, only allowing him to rest when he’d black
out, but even then it only added up to mere seconds.
They turned him against his friends in the Bloody Sunday Massacre where he released twelve souls from the world. Through all the
anarchy, torture, and pain the voices put him through, Red’s only solace came in knowing that at the end of this journey, no matter how
terrible, no matter how many friends he lost, Helix would guide him to
salvation.
This is the story an underdog whom against all odds accomplished the impossible. This is the story of the Hivemind, whom cast
out the False Prophet Eevee and sought out the guidance of the Almighty Helix Fossil. This is no ordinary story.
This is Twitch Plays Pokemon.
On February 12th the internet took on the impossible; beat
Pokemon Red. If you’ve played any generation of Pokemon you
know how simple the game mechanics are and how simple the
game play is. In fact, it’s so easy a kindergartener could do it without any outside help, which is something I have learned from experience. So why is this not-even-grade-level-difficulty task seemingly
impossible for a generation who grew up playing this game?

Pokemon Red is a role-playing game (RPG)
developed for the Game Boy, a portable handheld game console. The game was released in
North America in 1998 and was well received
by critics and gamers alike, eventually being labeled by the Guinness Book of World Records as
the “Best selling RPG of all time[1].”
The basic idea is to capture and train animal-like
creatures, called Pokemon, and use them to defeat other Pokemon in battle. The overall objective is to become the Pokemon Champion which
is only accomplished by defeating the standing
Pokemon Champion. In order to do so the player must first defeat the eight gym leaders before
being able to challenge the Elite Four, the four
Pokemon masters that stand in your way of the
Pokemon Champion.
However defeating the gym leaders is no easy
task, nor is getting from gym to gym. Each gym is
unique in that each gym leader specializes in a
specific type of Pokemon (i.e. electric, rock, water), and the more advanced gyms are accompanied by unique puzzles that must be completed in order to even reach the gym leader. As we
delve into Twitch Plays Pokemon you might start
to feel lost, so keep an eye out for the casual
corner symbol
CC which I will use to elaborate
on a detail that may need further explanation.
Your brain, yes I mean yours, is fascinating. If you want to walk
you don’t think about which muscles need to expand or contract,
you don’t think about how to move one foot in front of the other,
and you don’t actively communicate with your legs to produce forward momentum. You just sort of do it.
But, just for a moment, imagine that in order to put one foot forward you had to tell your foot to go forward. Not only that, there is a
twenty second delay between when you issue that command and
when your foot actually responds. Walking is still doable, just less efficient. Now add to this scenario another person who is issuing commands to your feet the same as you are on top of the twenty second lag. Actually, make that ten people trying to direct you. Screw
ten that’s too easy let’s make it ten thousand. Ten thousand voices
instructing your legs how to behave. The catch? Your legs execute
each command they receive. Chances are you’ll end up going approximately nowhere and accomplishing nothing short of a vacation
at your local loony bin.
And that’s exactly what Australian programmer [insert name
here] did. No, he didn’t get tied up in a straight jacket, he crowdsourced one single character and gave control to the internet. The
anonymous Twitch user created the greatest social experiment of
our generation using Python, a commonly used programming language, and VisualBoyAdvanced, a Game Boy emulator that allowed him to run Pokemon Red on his computer.
How it works is the program he created converts specific strings
(words) into button commands which are then executed in the
game emulator. For instance, by feeding the program the string
“up” the character, Red, will move in the upwards direction, “start”
will open the start menu, “a” will perform a selected action, etc. CC

However, the program only recognizes established commands
that are buttons found on the Game Boy (a, b, up, down, left, right,
select, start) so feeding it the string “turn around” will not have any
effect. Armed with this revolutionary program the unidentified Aussie
uploaded his social experiment to Twitch, a video-streaming website, where other Twitch users could input their commands in the
chat box. Ten thousand voices, ten thousand commands, one pair
of legs.
That is what made this challenge impossible, but in order to be
the very best that no one ever was you have to go where no one
has ever gone before. [insert name here] went there, he crowdsourced Pokemon Red and we accepted his challenge. 16d 7h
45m 23s later was the Thundershock Heard Around the World CC. We
had done it.

first Pokemon. Whichever Pokemon you

Using/Tossing Items:
When selecting items from the start menu the
player is given the options “Use” or “Toss”. With
10,000+ players it’s no surprise that many nonessential, yet still useful, items were accidentally

Naming Pokemon:
Upon catching a Pokemon you are offered the
chance to give it a nickname. Due to the chaotic nature of Anarchy, the Pokemon we nicknamed received unusual names, like “---” and
“JLVWNNOOOO“
The Hivemind then derived unofficial names
from the jumble of letters and characters, such
as “Dashbat” from “---” and “Jay Leno” from
“JLVWNNOOOO”
Ledges:
Ledges in Pokemon are one way; you can jump
down but you can’t go up, making many areas
of the game very difficult to get to. In fg.8 (on
the following 3 pages) we wanted to turn left
then go up to enter the Day Care. Instead we
jumped off the ledge and then had to go all the
way back up the road. And yes, it’s a long road.
They take hours to navigate, just check the time

An area in Fuchsia City that you must pay to enter. You are only granted 500 steps and 30 Safari
Balls. Your Safari adventure ends after 500 steps
or after you use all your Safari Balls, whichever
comes first. Locating the Secret House in the Safari Zone is the only way to obtain Surf (explained
on the next page).
Dig:
Dig is a move in Pokemon that can also be
used out of battle. Out of battle it can be used
to “teleport” back to the last Pokemon Center
you healed at. Digrat used dig a lot in the Safari
Zone, but his worst transgression was when he
used dig before we were able to pick up the
Silph Scope in Team Rocket HQ.
Start9:
Eventually [insert name here] added a new
feature to Democracy that allowed players
to add a number at the end of their command. The game would then execute the
command that many times. Anarchists would
spam the command “Start9” (which presses
start 9 times) during Democracy mode as a

way to “overthrow” the system (by halting
progress). Votes to switch systems are registered by inputting the commands “Anarchy”
and “Democracy” in the chat box, the same
as movement commands.

Surf:
Surf is a move in Pokemon that can also be used
out of battle. Out of battle surf allows you to traverse through water. Only certain Pokemon can
use surf, Lapras being one of them. The only way
to reach Cinnabar Island, and the 7th Gym, is to
use a Pokemon to surf there.

By now I’m sure you’ve realized that we
fought Giovanni before in the Team Rocket
HQ. Well, we’re going to see him one last
time.
Giovanni isn’t just the leader of Team Rocket,
a terrorist organization that abuses, captures,
and steals Pokemon, he’s secretly the 8th Gym
Leader (plot twist!). If you haven’t figured it
out yet, Giovanni is the main Antagonist,
aside from our Rival, Blue.
Master Ball:
The Master Ball is the best type of Pokeball in
the game. There are different kinds of Pokeballs used to capture stronger and weaker

Legendary Pokemon:
Pokemon Red has three legendary Pokemon;
Moltres, a fire-type, Articuno, ice-type, and
Zapdos, electric-type, all of which are also flying-type Pokemon. They are extremely difficult
to catch and you only encounter each of them
once. They have designated spawn points, Zapdos’s being in the Power Plant.
Releasing Pokemon:
As aforementioned Pokemon can be released
back into the wild through the PC. When you release a Pokemon they are gone FOREVER. They
don’t come back and you cannot encounter
that same Pokemon in the wild. It’s gone for
good.
Due to the chaotic nature of Anarchy we accidentally released many Pokemon from the PC,
including our starter Pokemon “Abby”. Trying to
make sense of the tragedy the Hivemind turned
towards religion for answers, claiming the release of “Abby” and “Jay Leno” to be the will of
the Almighty Helix Fossil.

The Pokemon League:
The end of the Road, the final bosses. The Pokemon
League is made up of the top 5 Pokemon trainers; The Elite Four and the Pokemon Champion.
In order to beat the Pokemon League and become the new Pokemon Champion you must
beat each member of the Elite Four and the
Pokemon Champion in one run. You cannot
heal your Pokemon after battle, you must beat
all 5 trainers in one attempt otherwise you start
at the beginning again (regardless of any previous progress made).

I mentioned earlier that the chaotic nature of Anarchy produced unpredictable actions and events, those that would not be
possible if using Democracy.
The Church of Helix formed well before Democracy existed. It
began as a result of constantly attempting to “use” the Helix Fossil.
This was done through a series of random commands that, when
put together, would open the start menu, select items, selectHelix
Fossil, followed by two “a” commands. Trying to use the Helix Fossil yields an error message in the form of Red hearing the voice of
Professor Oak who informs him that “This isn’t the time to use that!”

Keep Calm and Consult The Helix:
This became known as “Consulting the Helix Fossil”. Helix was
consulted both in and out of battle, inspiring His followers and giving them strength when they were weak. The constant consultation
of Helix made him an icon and eventually he was a diety. Because
consulting Him was a result of Anarchy, he was therefore associated with any actions that resulted from the chaos of Anarchy.
Thus, the release of Abby and Jay Leno was accepted as the
will of Helix, who did so to reveal the False Prophet Eevee as a follower of the Dome. Helix guided our hand when we caught the
Legendary Zapdos. And Bloody Sunday, which resulted from our
attempt to retrieve Zapdos from the PC, was believed to be a sacrifice to Helix in order to receive the Archangel of Justice.

However, Helix’s most recognized “Prophet” was Bird Jesus.
Bird Jesus came to us on the first day as a level 3 Pidgey. He was
the first Pokemon we caught and our only remaining Pokemon
from The Lost Days, the time before the arrival of Helix. Bird Jesus
was with us from start to finish, carrying the team on his back far
more than he had to. The power of Helix was strong in Bird Jesus.
But Helix wasn’t the only deity TPP encountered. There also
existed 2 additional parties, the Dome Fossil and the Amber Fossil.
The Amber Fossil was recovered far too late in the game to gain
as many followers as Helix or Dome, but essentially followers of the
Amber Fossil were pacifists who occupied the middle ground and
remained neutral in a Helix-Dome war.
This brings us to Dome, Helix’s counterpart. In Mt. Moon we
faced a choice that, unbeknownst to us at the time, decided our
fate. The choice was which fossil to obtain, the Helix Fossil or the
Dome Fossil. Anarchy decided on Helix who was then given to us,
leaving Dome cast aside.
Dome is Helix’s counterpart.

The Incredible Social Experiment
This new TPP culture is really quite beautiful and incredible if you really dissect it. But first, please understand that nobody should actually
be taking this religion stuff seriously, it’s just satire. You see, the Hivemind
began looking for some sort of explanation for the erratic behaviors of
Red. Memes quickly arose depicting Red as a troubled boy with a mental illness, plagued by the “voices in his head”. Without even realizing
it we created something amazing. We transformed a simple game of
Pokemon into a story about Red. This switch in focus created a story outside of the game. But we didn’t have all of the answers so we did something that humans have done for millennia; We turned to religion. But we
didn’t turn to the deities we already knew, we introduced our own.
In a matter of days a religion was created and later an entire CULTURE came to be. We, over one hundred thousand individuals, came
together and unintentionally created something bigger than ourselves.
That, at least in my eyes, is incredible. Sure, it was just satire, a joke fabricated to give this phenomenon meaning, but it was still REAL. We read
between the lines and created something special. We gave the game
MEANING.

Beating the game was the original challenge; Could the internet
play and beat a single game of Pokemon together? This was the intended social experiment, but it produced unexpected results; Yes, we
