Crafter’s ‘small’ creations
make Christmas special

KILMARNOCK—Gail Griffith’s chaotic first attempt at crafting an old-world Santa Claus
was humorous to her family. She turned the kitchen of their home in Maryland into a make-shift
workshop, pouring molds, sewing tiny velvet suits and shaping beards.
“I desperately wanted an old-fashioned Santa, but didn’t want to pay the $1,000 price tag,”
said Griffith. “So I decided to make one. I had stuff everywhere. It was the biggest mess and my
husband and son thought I was so funny. But I was determined to do it.”
Her persistence paid off in a big way.
Since that first attempt in 1983, Griffith has made an estimated 2,000 Santas, gaining national
recognition in decorating magazines and books. Her Santas were sold in Eddie Bauer’s 1991
holiday catalog.
Friends so admired Griffith’s first handcrafted Santa Claus that she had requests for three.
“I thought, if my friends want them, then maybe I can sell them. So I put them in my booth,”
said Griffith.
She and her husband made wooden wagons and Noah’s Arks for a booth at the Country
Heritage Market in Valley Forge, Pa. They added a few Santas and at that first showing Griffith
took orders for over $70,000 worth of Santas, at a price of $75 each.
“I went home and cried,” she said. “How was I going to fill all those orders, I thought. And
I didn’t.”
It took about two years for Griffith to fill those original
orders, but the show created a whole new career, a career that
allowed her to move to the Northern Neck.
“We found that we could ship the Santas from anywhere,
so they were really the reason we were able to move here.”
Picked to be on the cover of the advertising postcard for
Country Heritage Market, the Santas are all handcrafted.
Most wear velvets or antique fabrics. All have hair and
beards made of sheepskin and wool. And every face is handpainted, one at a time.
“Some are long and skinny, some short and fat, some have
tilted heads,” said Griffith. “But they are all unique. They
have their own characters and they are all individuals.”
It takes about 20 hours to complete a Santa. Several years
ago when she operated a store in Burgess and with the help
of six employees, she made 700 Santas in one year.

even cleaned up my room so it’ll

Although she has a booth at the Kilmarnock Antique Gallery,
Griffth doesn’t stock the display with Santas. She makes them on
a very limited basis these days, taking special orders from friends
and customers.
“I like it now that I can take my time and use my artistic ability
to create instead of having to produce 700,” said Griffith, who molds
and handpaints each chalkware face.
“It’s a labor of love, and I do enjoy it.”
Just a big kid who loves Christmas, the 63-year-old Griffith says
her mother always made the holiday special.
“My mother made Christmas wonderful for us. I used to cry
because I was so short and my mom said that the best things come
in small packages. That’s why every year for Christmas, she’d give
me something special in a small package.”
Griffith’s Santas are her small, precious gifts to the world.
