Here’s what to look for. If you answered yes for your pet to any of the above, even occasionally, they may be suffering from Osteoarthritis.
Remember that pets tend to be “people pleasers,” and might try to hide their pain when you play with them. So watch their behaviors closely to
detect any of these subtle or gradual signs and call our office to schedule an exam if you observe them. Many easy to use and affordable options
exist for treatment of and comfort of your pet.

Free Diabetes Screenings for all Pets on March 21
Did you know that 1 in 200 dogs and 1 in 100 cats will be diagnosed with diabetes this year? And these numbers have been
rising from 15-30% each year! Diabetes if left untreated can lead to significant health problems and even death. It is one of
those diseases that can have very subtle symptoms at first and catching it early is really important for long term treatment.
That’s why we’ve decided to host a FREE diabetes health screening on March 21 from 10a-2p. Our medical team will
perform a blood screening on each pet and discuss health risks. Within minutes we will know if your pet’s blood glucose
is above normal, and if so, we can advise you what further testing should be scheduled to confirm the result. Although
diabetes is one possibility, there are other causes that can be diagnosed with more in depth testing. Obesity and inactivity
are two of the risk factors for diabetes so keep your pet fit and trim to prevent this disease!
Laundry detergent pods,
a concern for kids, can harm pets too
Most soaps and detergents contain chemicals called ionic and anionic
surfactants. When pets ingest a small amount of such products, it’s possible
for them to respond to the unpleasant taste or to have mild, gastrointestinal
upset (drooling, vomiting and diarrhea).
However, a new danger seems to be presenting itself. It was first noticed
that children were developing serious respiratory issues after biting into
the highly concentrated, prepackaged laundry detergent pods. Laundry
detergent and dishwasher pods, which look like candy, have been in the news
as a hazard to children, are dangerous to pets too.
Not surprisingly, Pet Poison Helpline has noticed some severe clinical signs
in dogs and cats exposed to these pods as well. Of the cases reported to the
Pet Poison Helpline over the past two years, 72 percent of pets developed
clinical signs.
So why do pets exposed to cleaning pods experience more severe reactions
than pets that simply lick the product off the floor or their fur? The reason is
thought to be the way the product is formulated in the pod. When a pet bites
into a pod, the product is both highly concentrated and under pressure from
the bite. Therefore when the pod is punctured, the detergents are forcefully
expelled and may be easily aspirated or swallowed, often in large amounts.
When these exposures occur, it is important for the pet owner to
immediately limit exposure by rinsing the mouth, skin or eyes until
the slick, “soapy” feel is gone. Monitor your pet for any symptoms
such as vomiting or respiratory signs and consult a veterinarian
if observed. Although there is no antidote for laundry pod
exposure, clinical signs should be treated with symptomatic and
supportive care. If you’re not sure about your
pet’s exposure or have questions you can also
consult a pet poison control center for specific
product information.

Why Feliway is our favorite cat product in 2015
Stress in cats can cause a range of health and behavior problems
• Urine marking
• Excessive shyness
• Inappropriate soiling • Obesity
• Scratching
Available in an electric diffuser and a spray,
we use Feliway to control and manage
unwanted behaviors and to create the most
comfortable “catmosphere” possible.
Feliway is a synthetic copy of the natural feline facial pheromone proven
to help reduce or prevent feline stress by mimicking the pheromones cats
produce when they feel safe and happy. In other words, it’s like comforting
your cat in their own language.
Cats’ natural needs
• Room to roam
• To have free access to food, water,
litter box, etc.
• Ability to hide from stressful situations
• Privacy
Cats in the 21st Century
• Live in houses or apartments
• Have little to no control over
their resources
• Often have restricted access
within the home
• Share their living space with kids
& other pets
Dogs are like a gumbo….
“I am a ‘SUMA’ dog.
Suma this and
suma that!”
….it’s the ‘little of this and little of that’ sprinkled in that makes them so special.
