annually abandon thousands of
dollars worth of fireworks. CBP
officers at San Diego area ports
of entry have collected over
25 pounds of illegal fireworks
during the past few weeks and
are expecting more as Independence Day approaches.
“Many travelers do not understand that it is illegal to import these dangerous devices,”
said Paul Morris, director of
field operations for CBP in San
Diego. “Imported fireworks can
be dangerous because of the
fire hazard and irregularities in
manufacturing. Each year our
officers confiscate hundreds
of pieces of fireworks and turn
them over to the San Diego
fire department bomb squad
for disposal.”

avoid risk of possible injury
as well as the financial loss
caused by confiscation of the

“When people innocently
arrive at the border with fireworks and properly declare
them, we are required to confiscate the merchandise, but
without penalty,” he said.
“Those who try to circumvent
the law by failing to declare
the merchandise face stiff
monetary penalties.”

Survey reveals high school students’
views on American Citizenship
W
hile this Independence Day will
certainly include
the usual festivities – fireworks,
cookouts, patriotic speeches
and Americans dressed in red,
white and blue – the meaning
behind the celebration has not
been lost on America ’s next
generation.
A new nationwide survey
of nearly 3,000 high school
students, released recently by
the Bill of Rights Institute, Arlington, VA, provides a glimpse
into what the nation’s future
leaders think about American
citizenship: what civic values
they admire, who their political
heroes are, and which of our
Founding documents inspire
them the most.
The survey, based on an
analysis of the top 3,000 essays
submitted in the Bill of Rights
Institute’s 2009-10 Being an
American Essay Contest – the
nation’s largest high school
essay contest, with more than
50,000 entries this year – concentrated on three themes:
civic values, Founding Fathers
and American heroes, and
Founding documents.
The survey found:
1. What civic values do
American students value
most?
“Perseverance” and “courage” were cited most often
as the civic values essential to
being an American, with each
value being chosen by approximately 15 percent of participating students. Other civic values
identified by large numbers
of students included equality
and respect (14 percent), entrepreneurialism (12 percent),
responsibility (9 percent) and
liberty (8 percent).
2. Who are their heroes,
past and present?
Making the top five list, in
order, were Thomas Jefferson
(18 percent), Abraham Lincoln
(14 percent), Martin Luther
King, Jr. (12 percent), George
Washington (10 percent) and
Thomas Paine (9 percent).
3. Which founding document insipires them
most?
Students cited the Declaration of Independence (47
percent) and the Constitution
(33 percent) as the two most
important and inspiring Founding documents, followed by
Thomas Paine’s pamphlet,
Common Sense.
The breakdown of other
Founding documents cited is
outlined below:
These results were consistent
across all high school grade
levels, in all school settings
(public, private and home
school), with one exception:
The majority of 10th graders
identified President Lincoln,
not Jefferson , as their top
hero.
“It’s clear that students have
strong opinions about what it
means to be a modern American in light of our Founding
Fathers and documents,” said

“Perhaps even more important: The students believe
that American citizens have a
responsibility to live by certain
principles, or civic values, and
understand the importance of
perseverance and courage.”

About the Being An American Essay Contest:
Sponsored by the Bill of
Rights Institute, this annual
contest asks students to write
an essay in response to the
following question: “What
civic value do you believe
is most essential to being an
American? Trace the enduring importance of this value
throughout the American story
by discussing: a Founding
document that reflects this
value; a figure from American
history who embodies this
value; and examples of how
you have and/or could put this
value into practice.”
In the 2009-10 school year,
more than 50,000 students
participated in the contest.
Nearly $200,000 in prize money was awarded to students
and their sponsoring teachers.
The top three students from
each of nine regions, and their
sponsoring teachers, won trips
to Washington , DC .
About the Bill of Rights
Institute:
The Bill of Rights Institute,
founded in 1999, is a nonprofit
educational organization. The
mission of the Bill of Rights
Institute is to educate young
people about the words and
ideas of America ‘s Founders,
the liberties guaranteed in our
Founding documents, and
how our Founding principles
continue to affect and shape a
free society.

How to fix your Junk Food Jones*
New study shows
why we can’t “eat
just one”
*Jones: “a desire for something that may be sought irrespective of the consequences”
— Urban Dictionary
O
verweight people
may often say they
would genuinely
like to stop eating chips, ice
cream and Ding Dongs, but
they feel powerless to stop
their binges. A recent study
suggests an explanation as to
why it’s nearly impossible to
stop “jonesing for junk food”
once getting accustomed to
such eating habits.
“When lab rats were fed
junk food, they ballooned in
size, and eating became such
a compulsion that they kept
chowing down even when
they knew they would receive
an unpleasant electric shock
if they did so,” said Doug
Ingoldsby, nutrition expert
and manufacturer of All One
Supplements. www.all-one.

In comparison, Ingoldsby
said that rats fed with a wellbalanced diet didn’t gain much
weight and knew enough to
stop eating when they received
a warning that an electric
shock was coming.
diet might lead to similar effects in the brain as withdrawing from drugs and alcohol.
such as All One, because the
vitamin dosage can be easily
increased if needed.
Ingoldsby also added that
an even more startling finding
occurred when researchers
took away the junk food from
the obese rats, replaced it with
healthier options and observed
the obese rats go on a twoweek hunger strike.
“It’s hard, but not impossible, to break the addiction
to high-fat and high-sugar
foods,” Ingoldsby said.
• Include plenty of fresh
green vegetables and fruits in
your daily diet.
So what might this say about
human behavior?
“The suggestion is that a
diet heavy in highly rewarding
foods — quite literally, sausages, cheesecake and other highly processed foods — might
cause changes in the brain’s
reward system for satiety,”
Ingoldsby said. “When that
occurs, people may ultimately
gain weight and experience
a need to seek out more and
more junk food for their brains
to finally signal that they’ve
had enough.”
An earlier study by the same
researchers suggested that
weaning rats off a high-calorie
For those looking for a way

treadmill, Ingoldsby suggested
the following tips:
• Start feeding your brain.
Brain health requires fatty
acids like those found in flax
seeds and grass-fed animals.
• Consume high-quality
proteins and fats to stabilize
blood sugar levels.
• Add good vitamin and
mineral supplements to your
diet. Your body can rebuild
years of neglect only if it has
sufficient quantities of all essential nutrients, including
amino acids, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids. Ingoldsby

Q: How much money do I need to put down?
Twenty percent down is the traditional standby required by banks.
With the invention of mortgage insurance you can do as little as
5% down; with an FHA loan it can be as little as 3.5%.
And with special financing, the down payment can be $0.00.

In addition to a down payment, purchasers also need cash for
closing costs (the final costs associated with closing the loan).
Several newly emerging loan programs not only allow the purchase
of a home with no money down but also underwrite closing costs.

Not everyone, however, elects to purchase with little or no
money down. Less money down means higher monthly mortgage
payments, so most home buyers choose to buy with some cash up front.

will learn why obesity is America’s greatest threat and is becoming the single greatest killer of Americans. Some experts
claim America is on the cusp of an evolutionary disaster.
Former Surgeon General Richard Carmona said, “Obesity
is a terror destroying our society from within, and unless
we do something about it, the magnitude of the dilemma
will dwarf 9/11 or any other terrorist event.” Obesity rates
in the United States are climbing at an unprecedented rate
across all ages and ethnic groups. This is leading to the first
generation of children whose life expectancy is shorter than
that of their parents.
Killer at Large uncovers this epidemic, examining the
causes and suggesting ways to reverse this deadly trend.

July 4: 17th Annual Julian Parade to honor Veterans and
Early Mining Families. Julian celebrates the Fourth of July
this year with a parade saluting the gold miners who
founded the little town and a distinguished Medal of
Honor winner who had made it his home for the past few
years. This year’s Grand Marshal is Vietnam war hero John
Baca, who received a Medal of Honor from President
Richard Nixon in 1971 for “conspicuous gallantry and
intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and
beyond the call of duty” during the Vietnam War. He
also received a Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
Four bands will march down Main Street this year, more
than in any previous parade. Vintage World War ll aircraft
will scream through the morning sky before a cannon
shot marks the step out. Expect to see lovely and funny
floats, kids on horses, fire engines, mock old western gun
fights, Miss Julian and her court riding in spiffy cars, Boy
Scouts, Pearl Harbor veterans, Tribal Mountain Gypsies,
Doves and Desperadoes, and more. When the parade
steps out from Julian High School on July 4, visitors and
locals will be lining Main Street, so get there early and
enjoy the pre-parade program that traditionally includes
patriotic speeches and music, a mock gunfight, and
the vintage airplane flyover. The festivities continue
following the parade as well. Stop in for a barbecue at
the American Legion, bands will be playing all afternoon,
and many of the shops will be offering holiday specials
and discounts. For information visit the parade website,

their annual 4th of July Picnic and Fireworks at Kennedy
Park, located at 1675 East Madison Avenue. This fun
family event begins with a picnic at 12 noon and the
fireworks begin at 9 p.m. More details to come! Members
of the Recreation staff and some vendors will be on

Jumpies will be available for young children to enjoy.
Foreign Exchange Association
needs host families
Foreign Exchange students participate in the Forte International
Exchange Association.
E
very year the Forte International Exchange Association
(FIEA), an independent non-profit student exchange organization, brings foreign students to the Untied States to participate
in educational and cultural exchanges. This year starting July 15
through July 30, FIEA is bringing a group of Chinese Students
to Alpine. The Summer Camp Coordinator is Kinya Lewis.
Kinya has the training and experience of providing international
students with loving, caring and secure homes to help these
students experience the American way of life. We are in need of
several host families to share, show and give these students the
opportunity to experience the liberty of America.
Forte International Exchange Association fosters understanding and cooperation between United States and other countries
worldwide through international academic exchange programs at
the high school level. Such programs enable teenagers from both
countries to gain new perspectives and insight into the everyday
life in a foreign country. Following the exchange experiences,
students share their impressions and foreign experiences in their
home country and are also able to make new contributions to
their work and daily life. This ultimately plays a tremendous role
in the future relations of our countries.
Most families host our students simply because they enjoy
being exposed to new things and new ideas. Some families host
because they want to expand their family or want to expose their
children to other cultures. Others families host to fill the void that
they feel when their own children go away for college or move
away from home for good. By opening their homes to a young
student from another country, families have the opportunity to
share themselves and their love while gaining broader views of
the world and friendships that last a lifetime.
Imagine the excitement of sharing your life with someone who
has never experienced your family’s favorite things. Your family
can teach your exchange student about your favorite American
pastimes. You could take your new exchange son or daughter to
see a ballgame, to a museum, or to your own family picnic!
In return, you will look at your family’s everyday activities in
a new light, through a new pair of eyes. Your exchange son or
daughter will make your family activities special, exciting, and
more memorable! By hosting an exchange student, you will
broaden your entire family’s perspective of the world. Hosting
is a great educational opportunity for your family and lots of
fun too!
Our students are well mannered high school aged boys and
girls from all over the world. All students pass a rigorous screening
process, and must pass English language tests to assure they are
able to fully participate in high school activities.
For more information call Kinya Lewis at (619) 792-7869 or
email at [email protected]. You can view the Forte International website at www.orgsites.com/dc/forte

Third time is a charm in newest ‘Twilight’ film
Review by Diana Saenger
B
uzz about The Twilight
Saga: Eclipse being
the best of the series
so far is absolutely correct. Twilight, the teen romance pitting a
vampire versus a werewolf over
the love of one girl, first appeared in 2008. Adapted from
the novel by first-time author
Stephenie Meyer, the box-office
take zoomed to the mid millions the first weekend. Meyer’s
sequel New Moon opened in
2009, grossing nearly $143
million. By opening midweek,
Eclipse will probably top those
impressive numbers.
Not much has changed about
Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart).
She’s still set on becoming a
vampire like her boyfriend Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson).
Edward doesn’t want her to
do this because he knows the
world he’s locked into is not as
complete as the one for those
who are alive. But he wants
to marry Bella, and the movie
opens with Edward proposing
yet another time.
While Bella feels sure she
loves Edward, Jacob Black
(Taylor Lautner) is certain she
loves him instead. Throughout
this story he’s determined to
make her realize marrying a live
breathing, warm-blooded man
will be far better than marrying
a cold-blooded dead guy.
Anyone caught up in this
series knows Jacob belongs to
a Native American tribe whose
members can shape-shift into
wolves. This makes Jacob and
Edward natural enemies in addition to their conflict over Bella. The boys have to postpone
figuring out who really is the
best man, for another danger
faces both of their circles.
When a serial killer repeatedly strikes in Seattle, the wolves
and the vampires get a whiff
that the culprit is red-headed
Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard)
who is set on destroying the
entire Cullen clan. Victoria is
the recruiter for the Newborn
Army, a group made up of
new vampires whose strength,
viciousness, and unrestrained
blood-lust appears greatest in
the first months of supernatural life.
While Eclipse keeps fans
screaming in their seats every
time Edward takes Bella in his
arms for a passionate kiss or
when Taylor shows up – because he’s always bare-chested
– there’s little heightened plot
over the other two Twilight
movies.
It’s fascinating to me how
Bella can remain courted by
two different men through
three movies and play them
both like a yo-yo. One minute
she’s all Edwards until she’s
alone with Jacob, and the
doubt creeps in. Since there
are two more movies coming, I
assume it will be a while before
that’s settled. I also found it
interesting that for a short time
in this film the vampires and the
wolves have to work together
to seek revenge on Newborn
Army soldier, Riley (Xavier
Samuel). That’s because they
know the Army will come after
Bella to get to them so they
must protect her.
Bella’s dad Charlie (Billy
Burke) continues with few
appearances on camera. He
finally realizes he cannot break
up Bella and Edward, and
goes so far as to talk to her
about the birds and the bees.
The cast is great, with Lautner
and Pattinson offering solid
performances. Sometimes it’s
harder to play a character
when it’s repeated in a series,
but these actors don’t have
that problem. Granted, Bella
has little to exhibit besides her
dilemma over which man to
choose, but Stewart seems to
be one-note with little effort
beyond reciting her lines and
reacting to kisses.
There’s some occasional
humor in Melissa Rosenberg’s
screenplay during scenes like
the one where Edward remarks
about Jacob, “Doesn’t he own

again when Bella is freezing
under a blanket during a bitter
snowstorm, and Jacob enters
the tent – still shirtless.
It’s also nice to have a little
background on some of the
characters, and David Slade
does a fine job with direction.
The film also benefits from great
CGI and action scenes. While
not a big fan of the vampire
genre, I find sitting through the
Twilight series more entertaining than watching many other
movies; and fans will certainly
not be disappointed.

manages to test that theory too.
No time for lunch there!
Both actors step up their
game for this movie. And let’s
face it – you won’t remember
anyone else in the movie. Because Cruise excels in this kind
of action, he brings nothing
new to the film, but he does
have a chemistry with Diaz
that works well for the romantic
angle here.

Review by Diana Saenger
M
oviegoers who enjoyed
Tom Cruise in Mission:
Impossible IV, Collateral or
Days of Thunder will be thrilled
to watch the fast-paced, thrilla-minute Knight and Day.
Intrigue starts with scene one
in an airport where covert
agent Roy Miller picks out an
innocent passenger to help
him sneak a key tool through
security.
When the beautiful June
Havens (Cameron Diaz) accidentally bumps into Roy
Miller (Cruise) at an airport
she dismisses it as an accident.
But when he plows into her at
another spot in the airport, she
dreamily thinks it’s an omen.
She’s intrigued by the affable
guy with an adorable grin.
June doesn’t know what to
think when she realizes they’re
going on the same plane until
she’s told at the last minute
that the plane is full, and she
won’t be boarding. Her plea
that she must get to her sister’s
wedding in Boston falls on deaf
ears. Yet only minutes later,
Roy seems to fix everything,
and she’s allowed to board.
June is further perplexed
after seeing only a handful of
men on the entire plane. Small
talk with Roy across the aisle
from her eases her tension until
things quickly turn into a Ridley’s believe-it-or not moment
with Roy ending up taking over
piloting the plane.
The rest of the movie becomes a cat-and-mouse game
with Roy keeping his real mission a secret as he drags June
all over the planet. They dodge
more bullets than good films
this year but keep the entertainment coming. As they leap
from one roof top to another,
June is never sure if Roy is a
good guy or not. Just when
she seems most vulnerable, he
does something that endures
him to her even more. When
they end up on Roy’s secret
island, one he swears is untraceable for cell service, June
“The challenge and joy for
Cameron and me was finding
ways to reveal our characters
in the middle of these manic
moments of danger -- showing how Roy and June start
to bring out the best in each
other, which is the ultimate
romantic idea,” Cruise said
about his role.
Diaz, who was actually attached to the movie before
Cruise, liked the script. “I was
drawn to Knight and Day not
only for its high-level action,
but because I saw it as an impassioned love story between
two people who find each
other from opposite worlds,”
she said.
The movie also looks spectacular. Director James Mangold does a great job handling
his co-stars and the safety
measures required for their
stunts. He brought his director of photography, Phedon
Papamichae on board. They
worked together before in Walk
the Line and 3:10 To Yuma.
While most of the movie’s
thrill scenes are seen in the
trailer, and moviegoers may
not have as much fun as Cruise
and Diaz obviously experienced while making Knight
and Day, this film is still fun
and exciting to watch.

Dear Dr. Luauna
here are countries all around
T
the world that do not have the
freedoms we have, freedom of speech,
freedom to exercise religion and many
others. We should never forget the
men and women who served in the
military to gain liberty for us and to
protect our freedoms. May God bless
them and God bless America! Signed,
Grateful for Freedom
Dear Grateful,
Traveling all around the world, I agree with you, not only do
we have freedoms other do not, we have truly been blessed by
the Lord. I, too am grateful, for every person who has served
in our Armed Forces, in wartime and to preserve the peace.
Whenever I meet a service man or woman I thank them, it is
the least we can do. They have persevered through long or
multiple separations from their families; some have endured
physical injuries; mental anguish; and other hardships only
they know. I pray continually for them and for their families,
they have willingly answered the call of freedom’s voice, sacrificing and paying the high price for the liberties we enjoy.
As we prepare to celebrate our Independence this 4th of July
let us not only honor our military, but let us honor the One
whom has blessed the United States of America. Let us serve
the Lord with all our hearts, minds, souls and strength, that our
nation may continue in the strength and blessing which God
has graciously bestowed upon us. Without Him and the great
sacrifice of Jesus upon the cross, we would have no hope for
now or for eternity. Keep your hand upon us, Oh Lord!
Psalm 33:12, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,
the people He has chosen as His own inheritance.”

Our Best Friends
Ick is for Tick … Protecting your pet from fleas and ticks
S
pring has sprung, and
with warm weather
and sunshine comes a
more sinister visitor, the threat
of fleas and ticks to your pets
and your home. Fleas may
cause severe itching which can
lead to sores if left untreated
and they may carry tapeworms
that can be transmitted to your
pet. A flea infestation can happen quickly and easily, and
once your pet is infested, it is
likely your home is as well. And
while ticks won’t multiply like
fleas, they do carry diseases
that can harm both pets and
humans.
Prevention
By taking a few simple preventative measures, your pet
can have a happier and healthier spring and summer.
• Vacuum your home often,
paying close attention to where
your pets like to sleep. Be sure
to wash their bedding on a
regular basis.
• Ticks are most commonly
found in grassy or wooded
areas, so cut back any tall grass
around your house. Check
your pet closely for ticks after
activity in heavily vegetated
areas.
• Groom your dog frequently
to check for fleas and ticks.
• Use topical adulticide and
insect growth regulators (IGRs)
products. Adulticides are compounds that kill and repel adult
fleas, ticks and other insects.
IGRs mimic a naturally occurring insect hormone that
interferes with normal flea
development, preventing immature pests from becoming
adults. By killing flea larvae,
you break the life cycle helping
to prevent infestations.
“This last step is the most
effective in ongoing protection against fleas and ticks,
and now it’s even easier for
pet parents to protect their
pets because of an increased
availability of products,” said
Dr. Robyn Jaynes, veterinarian and pet care expert for
PetSmart. Popular products
like Advantage Topical Solution and K9 Advantix used to
be available only through a
veterinarian, but are now sold
at any PetSmart store or online
at petsmart.com or at your local pet store.
Treatment
If your pet has fleas, it’s important to treat your pet, your
house and your yard.
• Start by bathing your pet
with a flea shampoo. These
special shampoos contain
ingredients that will kill adult
fleas in your pet's coat but
generally do not keep fleas
from coming back.
• Following the bath, apply
one of the topical adulticides.
All pets in the house should be
treated with the topical products
to ensure fleas do not just transfer from one pet to another.

“Denali ” is a 3-year-old rough coated Siberian Husky spayed female. She
came in without any knowledge of manners or respect...but she learns quickly!
She is very sensitive and wants to do the right thing. She needs a smart
owner who will be her dominant leader and keep her on the right path. She
listens very well. For more information please email me at k9andk8@gmail.

“Hank the Tank” is the perfect boy for the
family looking for a big, sensitive dog. He
is a 3 year old Shar Pei / German Shepherd
although some think he is crossed with St.
Bernard...so he is what ever you think. I
personally think he is the coolest boy I have
had in a very long time! Hank stays right
with me when I feed the horses, and do my chores. If he steps wrong he feels
completely badly and will give you those puppy dog “I am so sorry” eyes. He
is very tolerant with all animals big and small...and I trust him 100% with small
children. Hank has trained up nicely and I am looking for a special home for this
wonderful boy!! For more information please email me at [email protected]

Lilly Rabbit is a white & black Hotot mix 2-year-old female rabbit. She is a playful
and loving small animal companion looking for a home. With a big heart, adorable
ears and a fun-loving personality, Lilly Rabbit can’t wait to find a new family to call
her own. Energetic and entertaining, she is happy to spend quality time with her
people friends. She enjoys munching on green veggies and delicious fruit! She
also loves getting her exercise in “bunny-proof” areas of the home. Sometimes,
she will playfully leap, skip and jump into the air! She will do well in a variety of
homes, but an adults-only home is recommended. If you are ready to welcome
a fantastic small animal companion into your heart and home, then come visit
Lilly Rabbit at the North Campus of the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA

• Use professional, concentrated yard sprays, many of
which attach easily to the end

of your yard.

For tick removal, it’s best not
to remove the tick with your
bare fingers. Instead:
• Try using an alcohol swab
to irritate the tick, then grab it
