HOUSTON EDITION
CHARTERED 1957
President ’s Message
Being Thankful That You Are the
of EWI
Installation at Shell was a very special evening for me. Most of my
family was there and also one of my Executives or should I say a “fill-in”
Executive was there for me. She is one of my favorites here at Shell.
Several of my co-workers took time out of their busy schedules and were
there for me; and of course all you special ladies and gents in EWI. Thank
you all for the nice notes you sent as it really means a lot to me.
We have had our Board Retreat with the Board and Committee Chairs and
we are off and running. All the committee assignments are complete and
Linda Petticrew
the committee meetings are being booked in the coming weeks and we are
off to a great start. If you have not received your committee assignments by
e-mail, please contact me immediately.
Back when I first joined EWI, I have to say I was clueless on how things
ran. It wasn’t until I started to go to my committee meetings that I started
to understand how everything worked in EWI. I got to know so many other
EWI members so much better and have made so many good friends over
the years for which I am SO thankful.
November is one of my favorite months of the year with the weather
turning colder. The photos we see of the leaves changing colors reminds us
that Thanksgiving with the family is just around the corner.
The November meeting will be held at the Crowne Plaza Houston River
Oaks with an excellent Professional Development speaker, Colette Carlson.
She will be presenting “Stress Less: YOU Management vs. Time
Management.” If you have not seen Colette, you will not want to miss this
meeting as she is extremely informative.
You are the HEART of EWI,
Linda

5 Ways To Manage Work-Related Stress
November 4th was National Stress Awareness Day, and our guest speaker for our EWI of
Houston November Chapter Meeting is Colette Carlson, whose focus will be STRESS LESS!
This makes it a great time to take stock of how you feel at work and figure out if you are dealing
with stress properly so you do not burn out or wear yourself down.
Some experts gave advice on smart tactics for tackling work-related stress.
1. Focus on your actions. It is impor tant to r emember that str ess is a r eaction and is not
inevitable, says Beth Burgess, a therapist who runs anti-stress workshops at Snyls. “It’s our
response to external events and people that make us feel stressed out. To develop a stressfree mindset at work, it’s important to focus on taking action rather than worrying, or
actually thinking more positively about things so you no longer feel aggrieved by them.”
2. Take action over things you can control. Taking action in the aspects of your wor k life
you control is key, Burgess says. “Do what it is that is in your power to do. If you have no
control over other things, it is not worth worrying about them. Focus on what you can do to
improve things rather than what you can’t. It will make you feel much more empowered.”
3. Keep your eyes on the prize. “To deal with conflict, r emember that focusing on your
common goals and negotiation will get you much further than whining about a colleague or
manager or their way of doing things,” Burgess says. “If you feel overwhelmed or uncertain,
gather more information or tools, or break things down into steps to make them easier. Be
proactive about setting up templates and systems to save time. And when you’ve done a
task, mentally leave it behind rather than worrying about it.”
4. Establish boundaries. Focus on your boundar ies to keep str ess at bay, r ecommends
Stephanie Mazzanti, a mind-body therapist at Cancer Treatment Centers of America. This
means not letting your external work environment overly affect your internal mood.
5. Learn to deal. It is impor tant for employees to have coping str ategies, Mazzanti says.
“For example, if a co-worker directs a snippy or negative comment toward them, they say to
themselves internally, “That is his/her own stuff, not mine.” Deep breathing and brief
periods of alone time can also help.

OCTOBER MEETING RECAP
Submitted by Donna Gurney, 2015-2016 Vice President/President Elect, representing
JLT Insurance Speciality Services Inc.
The EWI Houston Chapter’s October meeting is always a special one because we
install our new board. Linda Petticrew, representing Shell Energy Resources
Company, was installed as our 59th President and is the fourth President from Shell.
The meeting was hosted by Linda’s company at their new office complex on the west
side of town. The office complex is outstanding and the event space was beautiful! I
have never been to an employee building that had such a chic, yet elegant, dining
room. I was most impressed by the EWI Ice Sculpture – I could tell this night was a
big deal!
The networking hour was really special because we do not normally have passed
appetizers and wine. It made the evening more special. It was nice to see Linda’s
family and special invited guests, Past Presidents Melissa Ford, Vicky Tarpey, Sandy Hatcher, as well as
former EWI representative, Janna Stanford. They all came to honor Linda as she starts her year as
President.
Tonight Carolyn Noack, representing LINBECK, fulfilled her last duties as
President of the Chapter. She gave a thoughtful tribute to Linda. In a
symbolic and customary gesture, she presented Linda with her own gavel as
she passed the Chapter into Linda’s capable hands. It was very thoughtful to
hear how much Linda helped Carolyn the past year. For me, I felt excited by
the exchange because I knew in one short year I would be standing in Linda’s
place!
The dinner was like eating at a five star restaurant. The menu, hand selected by Linda, was fantastic. It
was hard to believe that we were in the Shell dining room!
After dinner, Melissa Ford had the honor of installing the Board. She reminded the audience that the
purpose of our being there was to celebrate leadership because “Leadership Matters!” She reminded us
that leadership development was one of the tenets of EWI’s mission statement and that all organizations
must have it in order to succeed and grow. She went on to say that effective leadership and
communication involve skills that must be learned and practiced and that EWI offers its members
effective opportunities to become excellent leaders. As she called up each new board member, she gave
each one a Survival Kit filled with some clever items to help us make it through this year. She was as
kind in her words to each of board member as she shared things about our lives and the roles we were
accepting this year. I was so proud to be installed as VP/President Elect, and I am thrilled that Linda is
my President.
Melissa shared her personal thoughts about Linda and gave her sound advice about the coming year.
The group became quite emotional when we heard the words written by Linda’s children, Rachel (who
could not attend) and Garrett. Every Mother should be so lucky to hear such a loving tribute from her
children. Like many of us in the audience felt, Linda has been a great role model to her family.
Linda gave brief remarks of thanks to Carolyn and Melissa and then introduced Sinead Gorman, VP
Finance Unconventionals, who gave glowing remarks about Linda and the job she did for Shell. Linda
revealed her theme for the year, which is hearts; something Linda has liked since she was a little girl.

OCTOBER MEETING RECAP
Submitted by Donna Gurney, 2015-2016 Vice President/President Elect, representing
JLT Insurance Speciality Services Inc.
When she thinks of hearts and the Chapter, the phrase “You all are the heart of EWI” comes to her mind.
A heart is the center or the innnermost part of something and she feels each member is the center of EWI
and the heart of the organization. She emphasized that from as far back as January 1957 when our
Chapter began, one constant is our shared vision of promoting our firms, growing and developing our
leaders, and improving the world around us through philanthropy and scholarships. She had no new
dream to set before us but instead encouraged a renewed faith in the dream of our charter members – to
get back to basics and build on our professional and personal relationships, which after all is what EWI
is all about. In closing, she reminded us that we cannot accomplish everything at once but we should
work together to improve our organization and ourselves a little bit each day. Our goal is not perfection,
our goal is excellence. So she urged everyone to give their hearts to EWI.
A brief business meeting was held to nominate three members to serve on the Nominating Committee.
The Chapter voted in Katherine Brown, Past President, representing Martha Turner Sotheby’s
International Realty; Erlinda Quintanilla, representing H-E-B; and Cindy Joutraw, representing
CenterPoint Energy, Inc. to serve under Nominating Committee Chair, Carolyn Noack. A large amount
of raffle tickets were purchased and in her last duties as Fundraising Chair, Kathy Hibbard, representing
The United Way, gave away some fantastic prizes.
As I left the building I thought about this new year upon us. Linda was right; each member is the heart
of the organization. I have been given such a wonderful opportunity to be the right arm of a remarkable
President. My job this year is to listen and learn. I am excited about this journey; and we all are indeed
fortunate to have Linda, who has such a tremendous heart, leading us. I’ll be watching and learning all I
can in hopes of being a dynamic leader during our Chapter’s 60th year. I am going to put my heart into
learning all I can! Until next year…..
