Birthdays
Yearbook committee
The very youngest official committee of
Cognito is the yearbook committee. At this
very moment we are finishing the yearbook
of the 2013-2014 cohort. We have been
writing pieces about all the event of the
last year, have collected as many pictures as
possible and are very busy turning this all
into an integrated yearbook. Only halfway
past last year our committee was formed, but
since then we’ve been working hard to create
a fantastic yearbook, worthy of representing
all the precious memories of our first year at
the MBCS. Because you represent your own
year, we hope we can form a full yearbook
committee of approximately 5 members
from first year students only. This also has the advantage of having full freedom in creating
it! Of course the former committee members are still willing to help you out when you come
upon any problems!
The main bunch of work will be concentrated at the last part of the academic year, but you
can already start collecting pictures, writing pieces about
events and start brain storming about the form you would
the yearbook to take. Moreover, the yearbook committee is a
good opportunity to develop your popular writing skills and
become a lay-out expert! Hopefully we can soon introduce
a new yearbook committee to take over this very important
task!

Food for (Thought) Comfort
Let’s face it: the summer is
over. It has been rainy and
windy and we’ve been wearing
sweaters for weeks now. We’ve
been promised there are still
some summer days to come, but
the Newsletter Committee is
not buying it and decided we’d
better brace ourselves... Winter
is coming. So here’s a recipe that
will surely warm you up after a
stormy bikeride: proper homecooked lasagna. It takes some
time to make, but believe us, it’s
a thousand times better than the
salty orange jelly that passes for
lasagna in the supermarket.
We suspect the only possible
health benefits are probably
purely psychological in nature...
This is comfort food, rather than
food for thought.
Ingredients
- Lasagna sheets
- Parmesan cheese
For the meat sauce
- olive oil
- 300 gr of minced meat (beef)
- 1 large onion, diced
- 1 large carrot, diced
- 100 ml of wine (can be either
white or red; white gives a better
taste, but red is better to drink
with the dish, so if you wish to
open only one bottle...)
- 250 ml of passata
- 1 bayleaf
- Salt
- Pepper
For the white sauce
- 50 gr of butter
- 50 gr of flour
- 500 ml of milk
- nutmeg
Melt the butter on a low heat.
Stir in the flower. Leave like this
for a few minutes, stirring every
now and then, to cook the flour
(if you add the milk immediately
your sauce will taste floury).
Add the milk in steps, stirring
it in every time until you have
a smooth texture again. Add
a pinch of nutmeg and leave
to simmer for a while, stirring
every now and then to prevent
the sauce from burning.
Take the bayleaf out of the meat
sauce. Build your lasagna: thin

Libras are, off course, known
for their well-balanced
decisions. However, this
month, the balance seems
to swing to the rational side
to much for the liking of the
stars. Please make sure that
while you start your plans
to scientifically discover
the world, you also leave
some time to spend on your
paranormal abilities that the
pseudoscientific world so
desperately needs.

Newsletter committee
September 2014
Every month a newsletter like this one is published. Which, of course, has to be taken care of by a dedicated group of students: the newsletter committee! Last year we consisted of four members to build
upon, but we need replacements for the ones who unfortunately left or are going to leave. Therefore, we
are looking for approximately 2 news members. Are you a creative genius, do you have a master degree
in journalism or fully developed designing skills? Or, do you just like writing, would you like to learn
to work with InDesign and does it attract you to create something together with other students? Then
don’t hesitate!
On average we meet approximately once a month in which we discuss contents of the new issue and
divide the tasks. Every month some one takes care of the layout and all columns are devided among
the committee members. Everyone writes its own pieces individually and at the end of the month every
thing is put together and sent out. Though somethings are rather set already, most things are still open
for discussion and suggestions. For instance, last year we drastically changed the layout of the newsletter. Such changes or the introduction of new columns are more than welcome. Therefore, anyone who
wants to join the committee can really have an impact on its appearance and content. Let us know if
you’re interested in joining by sending an email to [email protected] or tell us in person at any
drinks or the Meet Cognito Meetitng!
Join the Cognito Board!
Dear Cognito newcomers,
One year from now, an unconscious smile will appear when
you hear the name “Cognito”.
You will associate it with amazing friendships, inspiring discussions and drunk nights in
Amsterdam. At least, this is
what happened to most of us.
We hope that you will have as
much fun as we had last year and
therefore the Cognito board will
make sure there are lots of possibilities to create these memories.
Yvette, Nelson, Ilva, Annemarie
and I will form the board of
Cognito until January. We will
mainly be concerned with helping the Social, Newsletter and
Yearbook committee, organising
our own stuff (i.e. lectures and a
brain slicing event) and gather
information about other events
of our faculty. We are the backbone of the Cognito family and
we are here for you.
In the beginning of the year we
will organize two events to help
you find an internship this year:
Internshit on September 23th
and Internquest (October 7th).
I know it seems early to already
think about this, but the internships will form a major part of
this master and it can be great!
Previous experiences will be
shared by students and researchers will present available internships at their labs. We hope this
will help you to find an internship that suits you and to survive
doing the internship in the end.
It might surprise you that this
master comes with such an enthusiastic student union, since
this is a rare thing for a master
programme, but you will see
soon enough that you have a
great deal in common with each
other. You will not only be working together a lot, you will find
shared interests and the common goal to let neuroscience get
to you. And this will be fun!
Now you know what we can do
for you, but there is also something you can do for us. Namely,
as I already mentioned, the composition of the Cognito board is
only settled until January, since
three of the five board members
will go abroad for their internships in the second semester.
There, we are now looking for
some new, enthusiastic members who are willing to help
organising the events! On average we meet every two to three
weeks and have dinner with
the whole committee to discuss
what’s going on within Cognito.
All in all, being board member
of Cognito won’t take much
time and is simply a lot of fun!
If you’re interest, just find one of
us to talk to, for instance at the
“Meet Cognito Meeting” we’re
organising at Tuesday 16 September.
Please let us know if you’re interested in joining one of the
committees or the board and let
us know if you want to join the
Meet Cognito Meeting by emailing to [email protected].

Then you are a perfect candidate to join Cognito’s Social
Commitee where enthousiastic members organize a wide
range of activities! Last year we organized a Halloween
Party, Sinterklaas, bowling, ice skating, end-of-semesterbbq and most important; the Cognito Weekend. We aim at
organising an event every month and therefore meet every
2 weeks.
We are looking for 3
new committee members, to replace our
beloved friends; Kate,
Laura and Lea who
were members of the
2013/2014 committee. So if you want to
get involved, join us.
Don’t think about it,
just do it! :)
