o take advantage of a stronger
signal on a better frequency,
WSOS-FM and AM is now
broadcasting on 103.9 FM. The station
had been broadcasting on 99.5 FM
and 1170 AM in St. Augustine since
2012 and features oldies, weather,
traffic and news.
The Federal Communications
Commission in Washington, D.C.
recently granted WSOS the better frequency to help it better reach residents
throughout St. Johns County.
Kevin Geddings, owner of WSOS,
said that the request of the Federal
Communications Commission to
move from 99.5 to 103.9 was quickly
granted.
“Although we now reach Duval and
Flagler counties, our focus will remain
exclusively on St. Johns County. We
are a community-focused radio station,
committed to making a positive difference in Greater St. Augustine,” said
Geddings.
Geddings is a Florida native who
spent his childhood living around the
country as a result of his father’s career
as an airman in the US Air Force. His
first radio job was with WDXY Radio
in Sumter, South Carolina.
While at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Geddings
worked in commercial radio at WSPA
as an announcer and disc jockey. He
attended graduate school in New York
City, where he worked as an announcer, along with assignments in sales and
management for
RKO Radio.
He took a break
from radio for a little
more than a decade,
working for a large
ad agency in Washington DC, before
owning his own ad
agency. Soon, he
bought a bankrupt
radio station in
Charlotte, North
Carolina plus another station, and used
his experience in all
aspects of the radio
business to turn both
stations around. He
ultimately sold those
stations and ended
up in St. Augustine
at WSOS 103.9 FM.
He particularly
enjoys working at
WSOS because of
the local focus of the
station.

A local restaurateur has moved from
the chef ’s table to the
round table. JJ Vigoureux, owner of JJ’s
Liberty Bistro, is now
Chevalier de L’Ordre
du Merite Agricole –
a Knight of the Order
of Agricultural Merit.
The knighthood, awarded by
the French government, is a rare
honor proffered to individuals who
“promote the French agriculture
over seas (sic),” according to a news
release. Other knights of the order
include Jaques Pepin and Paul
Prudhomme. There are only 63
knights in the United States.
The U.S. delegate for Alliance
Francaise from Washington, D.C.
attended a reception at JJ’s Liberty
Bistro on State Road A1A on October 16, 2015, at which the French
consul from Miami awarded the
honor and a medal to Vigoureux.
Vigoureux was knighted because through his ownership of two
French restaurants in Northeast
Florida (he also owns JJ’s Bistro
de Paris on Gate Parkway), he is
the largest retailer of French wines
in North Florida and “brings to
Jacksonville owners and wine makers from some of the most famous
chateaux in France,” according to
the release.

The power of “Old School” service:
Four reasons your business should bring it back
By Dottie Dehart
[email protected]
As the tech industry has exploded
over the past couple of decades and millennials have risen to power, companies
have innovated wildly to keep up with
relentless customer expectations. “Better, faster, easier” is the battle cry. Oh,
and make sure there’s an app for that!
It’s no surprise that sleek, streamlined, lightning-paced organizations
abound these days. Yes, it is what customers wanted—but isn’t there something cold and impersonal about many
21st century transactions?
You’re not imagining it, said Joseph
Michelli. Yes, customers still demand
the speed and efficiency. But what they
really crave is that feeling of an old
school company that takes the time to
really know them, engage them, nurture
them.
“No matter how high tech your service becomes, you’re still serving human
beings,” said Michelli, best-selling author of “Driven to Delight: Delivering
World-Class Customer Experience the

The surprising secret to these

T
oday’s young professionals hear
about the importance of saving
for retirement seemingly from
the moment they are hired. In addition
to discussions with human resources
personnel about employer-sponsored
retirement plans, young professionals
are learning about the importance
of saving for retirement thanks to
the abundance of financial-planning
advertisements on television, the radio
and the Internet.
Older workers may not have
been so lucky and many may find
themselves trying to play catch up as
retirement age draws closer. While it’s
important to begin saving for retirement as early as possible, late bloomers
whose retirement dates are nearing can
still take steps to secure their financial
futures.
• Pay down debts. Eliminating debt
is good for men and women of all
ages, but especially so for those nearing
retirement. Substantial debt may delay
your retirement and can greatly reduce
your quality of life during retirement.
If you still have substantial debt, eliminate that debt before you start saving
additional money for retirement. Once
your debt slate has been wiped clean,
you can then increase your retirement
contributions.
• Eliminate unnecessary expenses. If
your retirement savings are low (many
financial advisors now advise men and
women that they will need at least 60
percent of their pre-retirement income
each year they are retired), start cutting
back on unnecessary expenses and
reallocate that money toward retirement saving. Cutting out luxury items,
such as vacations to exotic locales or
country club memberships, is one way
to save money. But don’t overlook the
simpler ways to save, such as canceling
your cable subscription or dining at
home more often.

Downsize your home
Many empty nesters downsize their
homes as retirement nears. If the kids
no longer live at home or if you simply
have more space than you will need
after retirement, downsize to a smaller,
less expensive home. Downsizing saves
on monthly utility bills, property tand
a host of additional expenses.
While you may have long felt
you would slowly wind down in the
years immediately preceding retirement, taking on some additional work
outside of your current job is a great

way to save more for retirement and
perhaps even lay the foundation for a
post-retirement career. Workers older
than 50 can be invaluable resources to
startups or other businesses looking for
executives who have been there, done
that. Look for part-time jobs that seek
such experience. Even if the initial jobs
don’t bowl you over financially, parttime consultant work in retirement can
make up for lost retirement savings
and may even make your retirement
years more fulfilling.

oday’s young professionals hear
about the importance of saving
for retirement seemingly from
the moment they are hired. In addition
to discussions with human resources
personnel about employer-sponsored
retirement plans, young professionals
are learning about the importance
of saving for retirement thanks to
the abundance of financial-planning
advertisements on television, the radio
and the Internet.
Older workers may not have
been so lucky and many may find
themselves trying to play catch up as
retirement age draws closer. While it’s
important to begin saving for retirement as early as possible, late bloomers
whose retirement dates are nearing can
still take steps to secure their financial
futures.
• Pay down debts. Eliminating debt
is good for men and women of all
ages, but especially so for those nearing
retirement. Substantial debt may delay
your retirement and can greatly reduce
your quality of life during retirement.
If you still have substantial debt, eliminate that debt before you start saving
additional money for retirement. Once
your debt slate has been wiped clean,
you can then increase your retirement
contributions.
• Eliminate unnecessary expenses. If
your retirement savings are low (many
financial advisors now advise men and
women that they will need at least 60
percent of their pre-retirement income
each year they are retired), start cutting
back on unnecessary expenses and
reallocate that money toward retirement saving. Cutting out luxury items,
such as vacations to exotic locales or
country club memberships, is one way
to save money. But don’t overlook the
simpler ways to save, such as canceling
your cable subscription or dining at
home more often.
Downsize your home
Many empty nesters downsize their
homes as retirement nears. If the kids
no longer live at home or if you simply
have more space than you will need
after retirement, downsize to a smaller,
less expensive home. Downsizing saves
on monthly utility bills, property tand
a host of additional expenses.
While you may have long felt
you would slowly wind down in the
years immediately preceding retirement, taking on some additional work
outside of your current job is a great

way to save more for retirement and
perhaps even lay the foundation for a
post-retirement career. Workers older
than 50 can be invaluable resources to
startups or other businesses looking for
executives who have been there, done
that. Look for part-time jobs that seek
such experience. Even if the initial jobs
don’t bowl you over financially, parttime consultant work in retirement can
make up for lost retirement savings
and may even make your retirement
years more fulfilling.
