MID-WEEK RECONCILIATION
Wednesday, September 19
4:30 to 5:00 pm
The feast day of St. Vincent de Paul is Thursday of this week,
September 27. Because this is our patronal feast, we will honor
our great patron next weekend at all the Masses. We know of
his love for the Lord, the Church and the poor. As we have done annually,
there will be a second collection for the work of our St. Vincent de Paul Society.
We have many requests for assistance with food, rent, utilities and medicine.
Members of our St. Vincent de Paul Society often visit the homes of those
persons requesting help to be of comfort to them and to assess their need. It
was St. Vincent de Paul’s love for the poor that inspired Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, a
lawyer and married man, to found the St. Vincent de Paul Society which is a
world-wide organization serving the poor. An alcove of the church is
dedicated to him with a stained glass window depicting this godly man
wearing a top hat. Visit this alcove and say a little prayer thanking him for his
good work and asking his prayers for our parish’s commitment to serve the
poor. Parents may want to google “Blessed Ozanam” and in visiting the
alcove with their children, tell them his story.
******
The 12:45 pm Sunday Mass returns next Sunday, September 30. This Mass
will help lessen the attendance at the 11:00 am Mass, which is quite full.
We want to avoid having people stand in the Gathering Space during Mass,
other than parents with infants or toddlers.
******
Vincentfest is today! Come and spend an enjoyable afternoon with your
fellow parishioners. There will be good food, entertainment and games for
the children.
******
We keep in our prayers the women preparing for the Christ Renews His
Parish retreat which is being held next weekend. The men’s weekend went
very well.

ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY—SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND

feast day of St. Vincent de Paul, which is Thursday, September 27. Our

in our area. God bless you for helping these persons in their time of need.
MISS VIRGINIA MISSION SUNDAY
Please remember this ministry to the needy of the inner city next weekend,
September 29/30. Bags of food or paper products may be left in the
Gathering Space of the church. Whatever is collected is taken to Inner City
Hope Mission House that very day, so please refrain from bringing items
through the week.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS
CATECHISTS STILL NEEDED!!!
Even though Religious Ed has started, we are still in
need of catechists to teach grade 5 on Sunday
afternoon from 4:00 to 5:30 pm. We have wonderful
ladies who have stepped forward to teach temporarily
but can’t make the commitment for the full year. The
topic of instruction for 5th grade is the Sacraments and
living more fully in the Holy Spirit. We have a wonderful
teacher’s manual and numerous resources through the
Religious Ed office. My thanks go out to all of the
dedicated catechists who are giving of their time to
serve in this ministry. God has provided very qualified
people with a love for children and our Lord. Your
blessings will be many as you minister to the children of
our parish. If you are interested in sharing in the joy of
the Religious Education ministry please call Debbie at
489-3537 ext. 204.
PARENT MEETING
Thank you to all the parents who attended the parent
meeting! It was wonderful to see such a positive
response to the faith formation of your children. I look
forward to the partnership we will share this year in
helping our kids get to heaven!

The 8th grade Confirmation Rally is coming up on
Saturday, October 13. Forms and fees are due no later
than September 28. Any forms received after this date

the diocese.
CHAPERONES NEEDED!!
We have had very few volunteers to chaperone the 8th grade
Confirmation Rally!! If we don’t have chaperones, the kids
will not be able to attend. If you are able to help, please
call Debbie as soon as possible at 489-3537 ext. 204.

SCHOOL NEWS
Following the long,
very hot days of
summer, students and
staff began the new
school year on a
positive note. Now an
entire month into
school, NWEA testing is
finished, teachers are
organizing groups to
meet specific student
needs and generally we
are settled into our Community in Christ.
Our goals this year include emphasizing the Works of Mercy
as we seek to expand our community beyond our school
doors. In this Year of Faith proclaimed by Pope Benedict,
we focus on the message heard last Sunday from the letter
of James, “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if
someone says he has faith, but does not have works?”
As happens every year, the Student Council chooses a
service project on which the whole school works
throughout the year. This year the project is across the
ocean in Kenya, East Africa, where Sister M. Germaine of
the Poor Handmaids became active in leading an
orphanage 12 years ago called St. Joseph’s Caring Place.
Sister Germaine, who is from Donaldson, Indiana, will
visit our school on Tuesday, October 2, during our annual
We Care Week to talk about her orphanage and the needs
of the 75 young men it serves.
Good things happen at St. Vincent de Paul School every
day, and we are grateful for the opportunity we have to
share in the spiritual growth of our students. We invite you
to find out more about our school or visit us at any time to
learn about our Community in Christ.
EDGE GIRLS RETREAT
What a fantastic weekend the Edge Girls'
Retreat was! We are so blessed for every
moment of the weekend and so thankful to
all those who made it possible! I would like to thank a couple of
people in particular. First, thanks to our musicians and singers
who provided us with wonderful music over the weekend. Thank
you to Bruce and the Fridleys for the use of their trucks and
trailers. Thank you to the adult Core team who put together our
amazing sessions and took care of all the small details that make
this weekend possible. Thank you to the teens who helped with
various parts of the retreat and really played an invaluable part in
the weekend. And thank you to the girls who attended the
weekend - their openness and enthusiasm enabled the retreat to
be amazing! It was truly a beautiful weekend!
FACETIME
What if you could FaceTime with Jesus? 7th and 8th graders, join
us for a fantastic night Monday, September 24, from 7:00—8:45 pm
in the Gathering Space to find out if and how Jesus and technology
go together!

For information about our
Life Teen Program,
please contact Sarah Hill,
435-0453 or [email protected].
This year, the huge and amazing diocesan event, FaithFest,
will be held Sunday, November 18. The theme this year is
Don’t Be a Robot and will feature the amazing and talented
Mark Hart, who is not only a great speaker, apologist, blogger,
Bible Geek, etc., but happens to also be VP of Life Teen.
This is an event you don’t want to miss!! Trust me! Forms
will be available soon, so mark it down and be sure to
register to attend!
PARENTS: FALL SEMESTER OF LIFE NIGHTS
Parents - we will begin sending out our new Life Teen
Newsletter soon. We will be sending a sheet home with your
teen for you to fill out, so if you’d like to be included in the
email list, please be sure to send the sheet back with your
teen. If the sheet doesn’t make it to you, call or email Sarah,
or check our Facebook page (St. Vincent de Paul Life Teen).
Thanks for all you do as a parent!

would be willing to lead these amazing parents please
contact Sarah ASAP so we can get those groups back up and
rolling again. Thanks so much!!
CORE TEAM
Have you felt God calling you to serve Him, but aren’t sure
how? Maybe He is calling you to serve His teens. Talk to
Sarah or any of the core team for more information.
EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS’ TRAINING
We are now accepting names of persons who would like to be an
Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at the Sunday Liturgies or to the
homebound. If you are interested in this liturgical ministry or can recommend
someone, you may call the church office no later than Friday, October 5. All
candidates for this ministry must be present for a training session; however,
attendance at this meeting is by invitation only, so it is important that we have
the names of potential candidates as soon as possible.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion must be registered members of
the parish for at least six months, over age 16, a Catholic in good standing with
the Church, and a person with a good reputation in the community. It is
assumed, of course, that the candidate has a love for our Lord in the Eucharist
and a desire to deepen this love through this beautiful ministry. We ask you to
recommend a member of the parish, or you may submit your own name.
BAPTISMAL PREPARATION CLASS
Parents are required to attend two Baptismal Preparation Sessions before the baptism of
their child. In Session I, a couple from the parish will talk about Catholic parenting and the
importance of becoming involved in the parish. In Session II, Deacon Jim will walk through the
Baptismal process and discuss the important role of Godparents. You may attend Session II
before Session I, if necessary. Each session will begin at 7:00 pm. It is recommended that
you attend before the birth of your child so there will be no delay in setting a date for the
baptism once the baby is born. Godparents, too, are welcome. At least one parent and one
godparent must be Catholic. Also, parents must be registered in the Parish. Please call the
church office to sign up for your sessions (489-3537).
Session I (East Meeting Room) - October 11
Session II (Church Conf. Room) - October 18
