You have called our office requesting information regarding retirement residences
and/or Assisted Living Communities in King County. This packet will provide basic
information regarding these facilities. You should contact the facilities directly for
more detailed information and descriptive brochures.
Retirement residences, sometimes referred to as boarding homes or congregate
care facilities, offer apartments, private or semi-private rooms with meal service,
housekeeping, and activities. Some can provide medication services and limited
nursing services. In general, residents must be able to function semi-independently.
Contact information and services change periodically. We try our best to keep this
list updated, however we cannot guarantee the accuracy of all information. You can

ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITIES:
THINGS TO CONSIDER
For people who need assistance with self-care but prefer to remain independent,
Assisted Living facilities may provide the additional help that makes that possible.
Assisted Living residents occupy private apartment-style units with care provided as
it is needed. Not all residences offering assisted living are capable of serving or
willing to serve all clients. Individuals who need multi-levels of care, such as,
behavior and medication management, or who have cognitive impairment may need
to inquire about the level of care services available.

Assisted living facilities differ in their design, and fall into five major categories:
1. A personal care wing in a retirement complex for those needing to have
such care.
2. A separate facility located with a retirement residence. Contracted health
services are provided when the resident needs to move to this increased
care facility.
3. An independent facility with the potential of 24-hour health care provided
in-house, often referred to as an “assisted living center.”
4. A campus or “pod” design with several free-standing residences built
adjacent to an existing health care facility. Residents have bedroom units
with shared kitchen, dining room and living area.
5. A special wing or facility with the capability of working with dementia or
Alzheimer’s diagnosed residents, who move to the wing as the disease
progresses.
Facilities also differ in how costs are established. Typically, the basic rent charge
includes only room and board. Other personal care needs are usually extra-cost
items. Charges for these services may be handled as a fixed fee for each service, or
as a group of services delivered for a flat monthly rate.
Some facilities may be HUD subsidized for both Low-Income families. Low-Income
is defined as 80% of median income level. The current income levels for 2013 are:

signing up for residence at any facility.
