Thompson Rivers!
It is my pleasure to welcome all educators, administrators and
practitioners to Thompson Rivers University (TRU). We are excited
to be hosting the 2014 Canadian Network for Innovation in
Education (CNIE) Conference and hope you all enjoy your time at
our one-of-a-kind university community.
C’est avec plaisir que je souhaite la bienvenue à tous les
éducateurs, administrateurs et spécialistes de l’éducation à
l’Université Thompson Rivers (TRU). Nous sommes heureux
d’accueillir le congrès du Réseau canadien pour l’innovation en
éducation (RCIÉ) de 2014 et nous espérons que notre milieu
universitaire unique plaira à tous les participants.
TRU is a thoroughly modern and comprehensive university focused
on providing the best educational experience for our students. TRU
hosts about 12,000 students on campus and another 12,000 online
though our Open Learning division. Our on-campus student body
consists of about 12% percent First Nations students, about 20%
international students as well as diverse mix of local students;
making TRU one of the most diverse universities in Canada. By
making education at TRU accessible, creating program diversity and
appreciating the diversity of our students, TRU is a place where all
learners can flourish.
During this year’s conference, Confluences: Spaces, Places &
Cultures for Innovative Learning, the CNIE community will
have the opportunity to explore the concept of innovative learning
in the context of their own spaces, places and cultures and the
unique impact the convergence between space, place and culture
has on the learning process.
CNIE affiliated institutions are among the most comprehensive
learner-centred institutions blending face-to-face and distance
education with professional and vocational training as well as
research opportunities that enrich the educational experience of
learners. TRU hopes to collaborate with the CNIE community on
pedagogical innovation with the goal of enhancing the experience
of diverse learners across Canada through excellence in teaching
and learning.

pour but d’offrir à ses étudiants la meilleure expérience éducative.
Elle compte environ 12,000 étudiants sur le campus et
12,000 autres en ligne, grâce à la division de l’apprentissage
ouvert. La composition de la population étudiante sur le campus est
la suivante : environ 12% d’étudiants des Premières Nations,
environ 20% d’étudiants étrangers et un éventail varié d’étudiants
provenant de la région, ce qui rend TRU l’une des universités les
plus diversifiées au Canada. Étant donné qu’elle mise sur
l’accessibilité de l’éducation, crée des programmes diversifiés et

Cette année, au cours du congrès, qui a pour thème Confluences:
espaces, lieux et cultures pour l’apprentissage novateur, les
membres du RCIÉ auront l’occasion d’approfondir le concept de
l’apprentissage novateur dans le contexte de leurs propres espaces,
lieux et cultures et d’étudier l’incidence unique de la convergence
de l’espace, des lieux et de la culture sur le processus
d’apprentissage.
Les établissements affiliés au RCIÉ font partie des établissements
centrés sur les apprenants qui offrent des programmes les plus
complets en faisant appel à une approche mixte reposant sur la
formation face-à-face, la formation à distance et la formation
professionnelle, ainsi que sur des activités de recherche qui
enrichissent l’expérience éducative des apprenants. TRU espère
collaborer à l’innovation pédagogique avec les membres du RCIÉ
afin d’améliorer l’expérience de la population diversifiée
d’apprenants partout au Canada en misant sur l’excellence de
l’enseignement et de l’apprentissage.

Welcome to Thompson Rivers University! I am
excited to welcome you to CNIE’s 2014 Annual
Conference – Confluences: Spaces, Places and
Cultures for Innovative Learning.
Bienvenue à l’Université Thompson Rivers
(TRU)! Je me réjouis de vous accueillir au
congrès annuel du RCIÉ, édition de 2014, qui a
pour thème Confluences : espaces, lieux et
cultures pour l’apprentissage novateur.
Over a year ago, we set out to create an
opportunity to bring together a variety of
educators and educational approaches from
near and far to showcase the magic that occurs
when diverse elements work together to
create something new and innovative. At the
time, we thought this theme was perfectly
suited to both our institution in its diversity, as
well as our city Kamloops – literally the
“meeting of the waters” in Secwepemc –
where waters, mountains, valley and desert
meet and mingle.
Our exciting program for this year’s conference
attests to our success in achieving this goal. We
have a variety of sessions for you, encompassing many disciplines
and cultures, with speakers from as far afield as Sweden and Spain. I
hope you enjoy the “confluences” you encounter and find the time to
make your own connections as well as you navigate each presenter’s
exploration of the spaces, places and cultures that influence and
facilitate teaching and learning.
I’ve had a lot of help and support organizing and planning this
conference and would like to thank Marlene Brooks, Joanne Brown,
Bob Byrne, Sylvia Currie, Brian Lamb, Colin Madland, Gail Morong,
Lindsey Norris, Brian Scrivener, Brenda Smith, Cristian Sonea, Kelly
Warnock, Corey Wiwchar. I would also like to thank David Comrie and
Tracy Poelzer from School District 73 for their insights and
collaboration. I am also indebted to BC Campus and ETUG (the
Educational Technology Users Group of BC) for their support.
I also want to acknowledge the tremendous support we have
received from TRU, and especially TRU Open Learning. Words cannot
fully express my gratitude towards our marketing department in
particular for their contributions – Corey Wiwchar, Cristian Sonea and
Lindsey Norris are all superstars in my book. I would also like to thank
Irwin Devries, our Director of Curriculum Development, who never
hesitated to support my and my colleagues’ involvement in planning
this conference.

Il y a plus d’un an, nous avons entrepris de
rassembler une variété d’éducateurs et
d’approches pédagogiques d’ici et d’ailleurs
pour montrer la magie qui s’opère lorsque des
éléments diversifiés collaborent pour créer une
solution nouvelle et innovatrice. À ce moment,
nous pensions que le thème convenait
parfaitement à la diversité de notre
établissement comme à notre ville, Kamloops,
qui veut dire « rencontre des eaux » en
secwepemc, lieu où se rencontrent et se
côtoient eaux, montagnes, vallée et désert.
Le programme du congrès est prometteur et
témoigne de la réalisation de notre objectif. Nous vous offrons une
variété d’activités portant sur de nombreuses disciplines et cultures,
animées par des conférenciers venant d’aussi loin que la Suède et
l’Espagne. J’espère que les « confluences » présentées lors du congrès
sauront vous plaire et que vous prendrez le temps d’élargir votre
propre réseau lorsque vous participerez aux différents ateliers
explorant les espaces, les lieux et les cultures qui influencent et
facilitent l’enseignement et l’apprentissage.
J’ai eu beaucoup d’aide et de soutien pour l’organisation et la
planification du congrès, et je souhaite remercier Marlene Brooks,

A Message from the President
Welcome to 2014 and the 7th annual
Canadian Network for Innovation in
Education Conference. It is with great
pleasure that we join our friends from far
and wide, at Thompson Rivers University
(TRU) in beautiful Kamloops, British
Columbia. CNIE-RCIE is a national
partnership of researchers, distance
educators, instructional designers,
administrators, teachers and educational
technologists from K-12, colleges and
universities, and the private sector.
As an organization, CINE-RCIE is relatively
new in its leadership, but its history is the
merger of two of Canada’s leading
organizations in early technology-enhanced
learning and distance education: CADE and
AMTEC. In 2007, an historic ‘marriage’
brought together some of the most innovative work and people in
the K-12 media sector and distance learning in all sectors to form
what we have today. We mark this amazing adventure and
anniversary each year with our colleagues from across the country
and the world, by coming together to talk about, show off, debate,
and synergise the enthusiasm we have for our discipline and our
passion.
This conference marks the end of my term as President. It has been
my privilege to serve ‘just shy’ of a two-year term (the first year with
my Co-President, Dr. Lorraine Carter) but I leave knowing we are in
good hands with your future Board of Directors and you, the
membership. There are many exciting plans for 2014-2016 and
beyond, so I hope you will come forward to serve on the Board or
serve as a volunteer during upcoming events.
TRU and its team have worked hard to bring you the best of its
institution, its region, and its province. As we explore the conference
theme of “spaces, places and cultures for innovative learning,” the
volunteers of TRU and the CNIE-RCIE Secretariat deserve your every
accolade for what will be, I know, one of our best conferences yet.
The keynotes are ready, the pre-conference and conference
workshops and presentations are ready, and WE are ready...to
welcome you to CNIE-RCIE 2014!

Message du présidente
Bienvenue au 7e congrès annuel du Réseau
canadien pour l’innovation en éducation (RCIÉ),
édition de 2014. C’est avec grand plaisir que nous
rencontrons de nouveau nos amis de tous les
coins du pays à l’Université Thompson Rivers
(TRU), située en cette ville magnifique de
Kamloops, en Colombie-Britannique. Le RCIÉ est
un partenariat national de chercheurs, d’agents
d’enseignement à distance, de concepteurs
pédagogiques, d’administrateurs, d’enseignants
et de technologues de l’éducation qui évoluent
dans les milieux de l’éducation primaire et
secondaire, les collèges et les universités, et le
secteur privé.
Notre organisation, le RCIÉ exerce son leadership
depuis relativement peu de temps, mais son
histoire remonte à l’origine des domaines de
l’apprentissage assisté par la technologie et de
l’éducation à distance. Il est issu de la fusion des deux chefs de file
canadiens: l’Association canadienne de l’éducation à distance et
l’Association des médias et de la technologie en éducation au
Canada. En effet, en 2007, cette union historique a rassemblé certains
des travaux et des intervenants les plus innovateurs des domaines
des médias pour l’enseignement primaire et secondaire et de
l’apprentissage à distance pour tous les secteurs, et voici où nous en
sommes aujourd’hui. Nous soulignons cette aventure formidable et
célébrons notre anniversaire chaque année en compagnie de
confrères et de consœurs de tout le pays et de l’étranger en nous
rencontrant pour échanger, collaborer, débattre de questions
diverses et partager la passion et l’enthousiasme que nous sommes
tous fiers d’afficher à l’égard de notre discipline.
Ce congrès signale la fin de mon mandat à titre de présidente. J’ai eu
l’honneur de travailler pour le réseau presque deux ans (la première
année avec ma coprésidente, Lorraine Carter), mais je quitte sachant
que nous sommes entre bonnes mains grâce au prochain conseil
d’administration et à vous, les membres. L’avenir est prometteur
pour 2014 à 2016 et les années suivantes. J’espère donc que vous
vous porterez bénévoles pour siéger au conseil ou participer à
d’autres activités à venir.
TRU et son équipe ont travaillé fort pour vous offrir ce qu’il y a de
mieux dans leur établissement, leur région et leur province. Lors de
ce congrès, qui sera un de nos meilleurs, j’en suis certaine, nous
approfondirons le thème Confluences: espaces, lieux et cultures pour
l’apprentissage novateur. N’oublions pas les bénévoles de TRU et le
secrétariat du RCIÉ, car ils méritent toutes nos félicitations.
