Life Teen Update
Dear Parishioners; In case you are not aware of the leadership changes that are happening soon within Life Teen, I wanted
to share those with you now. With the upcoming birth of our 4th child, my husband and I discerned that this Life Teen
season would be the last one for us. So as of July 1, I will be stepping down from my position as the Life Teen Coordinator/
High School Youth Minister.
Rather than my replacement assuming all roles and responsibilities, there will be two Life Teen “heads”: an “Evangelization
Head” who will be in charge of Life Nights (Monday youth group meetings) and events like retreats, and a “Discipleship
Head” who will oversee the formation and maintenance of the multiple small groups (which meet separately and function
apart from the large group meetings). Fr. Ben and I feel that a two-head leadership structure best suits the growing, multidimensional youth ministry that Life Teen is. Alexandria Lewis and Monica Majcher will serve as the Evangelization and
Discipleship Heads respectively starting July 1 (Alexandria will also continue in her role as EDGE Middle School Coordinator).
Though there is a sadness with letting go of a ministry I am so passionate about, I have a deep peace, joy and certainty that
this is the direction the Lord is moving my family -- He has been so gentle yet firm in our discernment process. I will
definitely not be a stranger to the teens but will continue to serve them in ways that are more conducive to my vocation and
home life.

ADORATION 101 * Strength Beyond Strength
In last week’s reflection before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, we read how St. Paul reminds us that
on our own, we are helpless against the temptations of the flesh; more specifically, against temptations
against the virtue of chastity. We saw how our flesh (meaning anything which places “things” or
“people” before what we know is contrary to how God set things up) continually fights against God’s
law of how to achieve and maintain holiness. It is only through a deep love for God that we are able
to, albeit oftentimes through suffering, cooperate with His grace and overcome these temptations.
We continue this week by taking a closer look at how all of this works. In verses 9-10 (in Romans),
we are told, “You are not in the flesh, you are in the Spirit, if the Spirit of God really dwells in you. Anyone who does not
have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him. But if Christ is in you, although your bodies are dead because of sin, your
spirits are alive because of righteousness.“ What are we being told? Here, St. Paul shows us that as long as we remain in a
state of grace (not conscious of having committed a mortal sin), we have the Spirit of God dwelling within us. What advantage is that to us? It means that we now have the power, the strength, through the Spirit of God, to say “NO!” to temptations
to sin; whereas without this supernatural aid, our natural ability would simply fold under the weight of it. Our physical
bodies, he says, still desire to sin, but our will is now prepared to shut it down. If we happen not to be in a state of grace, we
would not have the Spirit of God dwelling in us and, in our weakened state, we would give heed to the temptation.
The Apostle continues, “So then, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh – for if you live
according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body you will live” (v. 12-13). This is
our call to holiness. Once we’re in a state of grace we are fully alive. Temptation to sin no longer has power over us. We
consciously choose to cooperate with the grace of God in order to no longer live according to its dictates; we “put to death
the deeds of the body”. “For [we] did not receive the spirit of slavery”, St. Paul goes on, “to fall back into fear, but you have
received the spirit of sonship” (v. 15). Before we knew Christ we were slaves to our temptations. We could only but serve
ourselves, and that results in fear, which is the opposite of love. Paul urges us to continue, as now being true sons and
daughters of the Most High God, to not allow temptations to overcome us because we now have strength to defeat them.
It is not impossible to live a chaste life, even though the temptations surround us; difficult, yes, but never impossible. The
more we remain in a state of grace and work with God, the easier it will be to maintain as well. A virtue is nothing more than
a good habit. We just need to keep working at it until we’re at that point. This goes for any temptation, addiction, or struggle
with sin. But sins against chastity are so widespread these days that it often gives the impression that it is virtually impossible to defeat. It’s not and never will be because the, “Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells within you”
(v. 11) and all you need to do is want it! ~ Paul A. Ray

In Honor of Our Blessed Mother
May Crowning Essay (Final) * Why Would I Like to Crown the Blessed Mother
Trinity O’Brien, Candle Bearer
I would love to crown the Blessed Mother at the May Crowning because it would be such an honor and
privilege. I was born on the Annunciation. When I was younger, I really didn’t think too much about
it. Now that I am older and maturing in my faith, I have looked back on Mary’s example of saying yes
to God’s plan. Even though there are many obstacles and decisions in life, I have learned to call on
Mother Mary’s guidance and humility. In 2011, I had the privilege of being selected to play the
Blessed Mother in the Children’s Christmas Nativity Play. I remember asking God, “Why did you pick
me to be your Mother? There are so many other girls that are eligible to play her.” I later found out
how much this impacted my life and devotion to Mary. Through these last few years I have learned to follow Mary’s example of being a good daughter, loving sister and being able to put myself last and others first. In 2014, my mom had come
down with a very bad cough and was taking strong cough medicine and accidently tripled the amount she was supposed to
take. That night she started to not feel well. It got to the point where she could not even lift her head up and started to have
trouble breathing. We ended up needing to call 911. I remember going up to my room and crying, asking Mother Mary to
please stay by my mom and not let anything happen to her. I started to pray the rosary while EMS was taking care of my
mom. Finally, when EMS had left I went downstairs and asked what had happened. My dad said that she was going to be
ok. I was so happy. I knew at that instant that Mary had heard my prayers. Everywhere I go I can count on Mary to be right
by my side. Having this opportunity to write about my devotion to the Blessed Mother, is such a privilege.
