get out of egypt!
Here’s a quick look back at
one of the most eye-opening
messages of 2006. This series,
“Walking in the Kingdom,” is
available in its entirety at
Called to Conquer Bookstores.
Where are we now? In Egypt.
Isaiah 31: 1, 3 warns, “Woe to those
who go down to Egypt for help, and
rely on horses, who trust in chariots
because they are many, and in horsemen because they are very strong, but
who do not look to the Holy One of
Israel, nor seek the Lord! Now the
Egyptians are men, and not God; and
their horses are flesh, and not spirit.
When the Lord stretches out His
hand, both he who helps will fall, and
he who is helped will fall down; they
all will perish together.”
What does “Egypt” mean? In
Hebrew and Arabic, the word is
derived from a verb, which means to
bind; to enclose within a bundle; a
sense of squeezing; to limit; to distress; to cramp; It also means to fashion and to mold. Its root speaks of
land confinement, a place of intense
pressure—so intense that whoever
lives in Egypt is fashioned and molded into the ways of Egypt, the spirit
of the age, and above all, the mindset
of Egypt.
Where we live, the systems of the
world rule. We are prawns being
manipulated, and we’ve become content with the results of the pressure.
Why? Because pharaoh—the system
of this world—always” takes care of
us.” He feeds us; clothes us; provides
medicine for us; shelters us and gives
us an illusion of financial provision.
We are accustomed to this fantasy.
Just like Joseph, we have fallen into
the pit. But most of us are comfortable there and don’t want to find our
way out. We’re in a mindless cycle
where our work for pharaoh becomes
perpetual and we’re stuck in it; we are
constantly under the pressure and the
stress of this Egypt system.
We live this way and we think we
have no other choice. Instead of buying into the Kingdom, we’ve bought
into the American Dream—by any
means necessary, within the very system that binds us. I ask this question:
If Jesus came to destroy the works of
the devil, and He hung on the cross
and said, “It is finished,” then were
the works of Christ complete? Did
He destroy the works of the devil? I
believe He did. Then what are we
really battling? A mentality.
You and I have built nations in our
minds that need to be pulled down
through the Word of God. But we
love to blame someone else for our
own thoughts and actions. We say,
“The devil made me do it”
when the reality of it truly
begins and ends in the heart of
man. Everything I lost, I lost it
out of abuse and ignorance. I
am not going to give the devil
credit for my ignorance.
The Bible says be not conformed to this world. World
means “age.” We are now in the
electronic age. All the technology
and advancements—400 cable stations, cell phones, ipods, sitcoms
that show us that any kind of
lifestyle is right—are all programming us to the pharaoh Egyptian
system that is killing and destroying
us. We think because we just stopped
by worship service that God is supposed to fix it, when He says, “I
have already empowered you and
given you My spirit; I dwell in you.
Did you not know you are a son of
the King? Did you not know that
you are supposed to rule and reign
with Me? Did you not know that
you cannot spend only 30 minutes
with Me and 23 and a half hours
with the world and think you’ll walk
spiritual, talk spiritual, act spiritual?”
We’re still stuck with the first Adam.
When do we begin to rule instead of
being ruled?

New Life for
Latinos
at New Birth
In 2007, an extension of the
vision God has given Bishop
Eddie L. Long to build His Church
according to Matthew 16:18 will come to
pass. ELDER eDDie VELEZ talks with the
New Birth VOICE about his new journey
as pastor and this new ministry called
New Birth Latino!
VOICE: How did the idea for New Birth Latino
come about?
Elder eDDie Velez: God gave Bishop Long a burden to reach the Latino people and wanted me to
help him. Though I am Puerto Rican, I have to be
honest with you—I resisted, only because I so
loved ministering to the youth. In the end of it all I
realized that this was a plan God formed long ago
according to Isaiah 25:1.
V: What is the core purpose of this ministry?
EV: To preach and teach the gospel of Jesus Christ
to the Latino community according to Matthew
28:18-20 and 1 Corinthians 15:3-4. We will do
this by mirroring what is already being done at
New Birth—serving, loving, evangelizing and
making disciples who will impact our
“I want God to use me
society to God’s glory!
to help them see—the
way God used Bishop
Long to help me see.”
V: What can people expect from New
Birth Latino? What will be the minPA S T O R e D D i e V E L E Z ,
istry’s format?
N E W B I R T H L AT I N O
EV: Initially the format of the ministry
will be a Sunday worship service catered to the
Latino culture. ¡Música de alabanza y adoración
para traer la congregación en la presencias de Dios!

Translation—praise and worship
music that will bring the congregation into the presence of the Lord!
That combined with prayer and the
teaching of God’s Word will provide
an atmosphere that will equip God’s
people to Take Authority in all areas
of their lives. Again, initially we will
begin with the worship service. As
the Lord wills, we will add a Bible
study, English and Spanish as a second language classes, and more.
V: When will the Spanish Ministry
meet for worship service?
EV: Service will be on Sunday afternoons at 3 p.m. in the chapel. We
will remain there until we grow out
of it. The tentative date for the first
service is Sunday, January 28th.
V: Who will the ministry cater to
exactly—Latinos who only speak
Spanish? New Birth members only?
Non-New Birth members?
EV: The primary objective is to
expand what God is already doing
here at New Birth into the Latino
culture. We will embrace all who
would like to come. However, the
emphasis will be Latino. We currently have more than 50 New Birth
members who have answered the call
to support this effort. Non-New
Birth members are who we are seeking the most. The purpose of this
service is not to provide existing
New Birth members a later service to
come to, but again to minister Christ
to the Latino culture that we are
currently not reaching.
V: So the ministry is open to those
who are not Latino, but simply feel
led to serve in the Spanish Ministry
(and may desire to learn more of the
language and culture)?
EV: Absolutely! Many of our existing
servant leaders are African-Americans
who are bilingual and have a Godauthored burden for the Latino
community.
V: Will Sunday worship service be
spoken only in Spanish?
EV: No. The delivery of God’s Word
will be bilingual as well as the praise
and worship.
V: As Pastor of this ministry, who
will assist you in building the foundation?
EV: Let me say that my wife and children have been an incredible bridge
of support! When fear had me saying, “I don't know about this,” my
wife Anna was telling me that God
got it! The Lord has also blessed me
with some initial servant leaders that
were already at New Birth. ¡Que
bueno es el Señor! The Lord is so
good! Surprisingly, our Director of
Music, Jose Gonzalez, is a gifted
musician who has been here for
almost two years now. However, I
know that besides pastoring a people, I have been working and praying
diligently for the Lord to send out
leaders into His harvest according to
Matthew 9:35-38.
V: What role will our Bishop play in
this ministry?
EV: Our Bishop has and will continue to play a major role in New Birth
Latino. It’s such a blessing to have
his wisdom available to guide me
pastorally. There are so many roads
that lead to failure that I won’t even
have to go down because of Pop’s
wisdom. I will make some mistakes,
but as a father he will use those mistakes to build me as a son, and as a
pastor who can shepherd the Lord’s
flock. I’m so blessed to not have to
build this from the ground up; and
particularly not to have to build it
alone. Bishop will be coming in and
ministering to
the people regularly. We will be providing interpreters in New Birth’s
morning services for Latinos who
want to sit in the main congregation.
This is one church, with one vision,
with one faith, with one agenda: to
reveal Christ in them the hope of
glory (Colossians 1:27)!
V: What is your vision for New
Birth Latino?
EV: I remember several months ago I
saw an upscale sub-division being
built. All of the workers were Latino.
What hurt my heart is that they possess the ability to build these homes,
but don’t live in them. Not that living in a home of that stature brings
fulfillment, but at that time I said to
myself—and this was before the idea
for New Birth Latino had even come
to light—“these people need someone like Bishop Long to help them
see far bigger than their current situation.” I want God to use me to
help them see—the way God used
Bishop Long to help me see. I sincerely believe that once we get them
to see who they are in Christ, that
God will grant them a liberty that
can only come by His hand (John
8:32, 36). I want their families
whole! I want marriages healed! I
want husbands and wives to honor
one another! I want to see children
dream dreams! I want them to not
only see America as a platform for
employment, but to see it as a platform to be new creatures in Christ!
Old mindsets passed away—all made
new (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Patti
Labelle
brings church tour to new birth
words by LISA BIRCH
I first think “power” when I hear the name “Patti
Labelle.” There’s no way you can deny the strength in the
singing gifts of this legendary vocalist. When it comes to
delivering from the soul, she’s a world-class phenomenon.
After years of being an inspiration to many in and outside
musical arenas, the lady affectionately known as “Patti Patti”
will bring her song and spirit to the New Birth sanctuary in
her first ever church gospel tour. The 12-city tour, which
hits New Birth Dec. 6, is in celebration of her latest CD,
“The Gospel According to Patti.” Both the CD and the
tour are new ventures that bring obvious excitement for
someone who is no stranger to New Birth.
VOICE: What was the inspiration for the gospel CD?
PATTI LABELLE: After so many years and so many promises,
just to be able to put out this gospel CD…. Everyone
knows gospel music is very near and dear to my heart. This
project is something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time.
I was raised in the church and heard and experienced the
power of prayer and the effect that God has had on many
lives. This new album will hopefully not just be viewed as an
album of uplifting material, but an album that will draw
those who listen nearer to God.
V: What inspired the church tour?
PL: I want to experience firsthand those who are striving to
live a life that is dedicated to God; and in turn, I want to
share the gift of music that God has given to me.
V: What do you want people to take away from your performance at New Birth in December?
PL: I hope people leave the church knowing just how
blessed they really are. I just feel blessed to be someone that
people are looking forward to seeing. The proceeds go to
cancer research, which is a cause that’s near and dear to my
heart, and has touched millions more. So not only will I
deliver the best show I can, the audience will know that they
are helping others fight this dreadful disease. Chrysler and
American Airlines have been right there with me too. They,
along with the fans, are really making this tour possible.

V: We enjoyed your presence earlier this year
during Resurrection Sunday at the Georgia

that day.
PL: I enjoyed the Easter Service more than you
know, and I am very excited about coming back to
the New Birth audience. Bishop Long’s message
about renewing our spirit, renewing our heart,
renewing our focus and really caring about one
another touched me in a way that has made a positive difference in my
life.

Bishop Long talk about how we must carry the
cross for other people to help them get to the
place that He ordained for them to be and to have
the quality of life they were meant to have. His
message of reaching back and making sacrifices to
bless other people really touched me and helped to
put that loss into perspective.

Yolanda Adams and many others.

First Lady Vanessa Long
and the ministry are planning to implement some changes
to the women’s assembly, which traditionally has been
held during the month of October for about the past
eight years. First Lady announced to the congregation in
September that this year would be the last time the
women would come together for a conference in October.
Changing the month will ease the workload and financial challenges presented by having the Heart to Heart
conference on the heels of Spirit & Truth, which is held in
September every year. Look for more information on the

OF THE TREE
I challenge each member of New Birth to
take part in the Prison Ministry’s Gift Tree program this year. We need 100 percent participation
from the congregation, so stop by Kiosk No. 4 in the
vestibule now through Dec. 10 and make at least one
selection, which includes specifics on buying a gift for a
boy or a girl. Unwrapped gifts are due back to kiosk No. 4
by Wednesday, Dec. 13, and will be distributed to children of prison families during the Christmas program
held in the Family Life Center Saturday, Dec. 16. No
prison family will be left out if each member of
our congregation commits to purchasing one
gift for a child. Will you take up this
challenge on giving?

…CHANGE
THE FUTURE
Before the end of this year, move
a notch closer to one of your Godgiven aspirations. Write a list, seal a
deal, make a telephone call—anything
concrete that will further unfold the
journey in front of you. We are
charged to advance His Kingdom,
but we can’t accomplish the
job standing still.
Do it!
Sow something today that will
change generations. It’s time out for onegeneration thinkers. Everything is generational in God’s Kingdom. He wants us to think
about more than ourselves when we do things,
plan things and pray. Children are like God’s
arrows in our hands, and it is our responsibility and
privilege to launch them into the future. But we
need to examine how we are launching them. We
need to prepare and equip them with all the
accumulated knowledge, wisdom, wealth and
power that we have gained and that our
forefathers left us. Add an intangible
generational gift to your child’s
Christmas list.
…ASK
YOURSELF
“How much is enough?”
In everything you do, keep
Christ at the center and you’ll
know just when to scale back
and when to do more. Stay
tuned in to that still,
quiet voice.
...LOVE
EVEN MORE
Remember the Acts of Kindness
you’ve been reporting this year to help
New Birth reach its goal of 100,000? I dare
you to keep it going, (and keep record) even
after we corporately meet our mark. Make it a
yearlong objective for 2007 to perform random,
loving acts of kindness for others. Log your
deeds by date, which will be written confirmation of your commitment to extend God’s
love well beyond the holidays. Make it
a priority to live and give God’s
love, all year long.

A 21-day Fast and
Midnight Miracles
Jan. 8 marked the beginning of the
three-week corporate fast for 2006. As
recorded in the spring issue of the
VOICE…
“Throughout the time of consecration, there was something indescribable in the air. People lingered in the
sanctuary for alone time with God.
Men and women sanctified themselves,
turned off televisions and radios, and
gave up food and other pleasures.
People sacrificed sleep. The scriptures
were searched more deeply. People
could hear God better. Potential was
pushed. There was clarity in the Spirit.
Bishop Long even stated, ‘I’m preaching better.’ ”
“Later, on the night of Jan. 29 at
10 p.m., 8,000 saints returned to New
Birth for a Midnight Miracle service—
a first in the church’s history. New
Birth was joined by six busloads from
Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Nashville,
TN, along with their Pastor, Bishop
Joseph Walker. New Birth and Mt.
Zion thought they were just coming
together to culminate this fast.”
The Midnight Miracle service
moved into the early morning hours
of Jan. 30. On that evening, an international icon, Mother Coretta Scott
King, would take her last four breaths,
which, as clarified eight days later by
her baby girl Elder Bernice King, was a
symbolic Kingdom call for the nations
and the world to undergo a new birth!

The world came to New Birth on Feb. 7 for the homegoing of Mother Coretta Scott King—an international
icon of greatness. On this day of transformation for so
many, the voice of God spoke through the youngest of
the King children, Elder Bernice King, as she delivered a
critical message from the pulpit of New Birth Missionary
Baptist Church to the nations in the presence of four
United States Presidents; Bishop Eddie L. Long and
First Lady Vanessa Long; the King family; forerunners of
the Civil Rights Movement; senators and congressmen;
celebrities and a host of others.
Elder Bernice King speaks:

“God’s been waiting on us a long time to get it together.
And if we miss this one, we’re gonna miss one of the
greatest opportunities to demonstrate God in the earth.
We gotta cease from our divisions; we gotta cease from our
politicking; from the exploitation and the insecurities,
because God is not looking for another Martin Luther
King or Coretta Scott King. The old has passed away.
There is a new order that is emerging, and in this new
birth, God is going to raise up a remnant of people who
are determined to position themselves that the kingdoms of
this world might become the Kingdom of our Lord and
our Savior.”
“It’s time for us to birth out righteousness, equality,
true justice, true freedom and true holiness—which at the
end of the day, when you think about holy, it just simply
means what (Coretta) demonstrated and lived every day
of her life. It’s why she could build the Martin Luther
King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change…an epicenter for this Kingdom of God (nonviolence,) and she
did it because she was holy. Holy means ‘having our lives
yielded to God.’ She didn’t do it for fame; she didn’t do it
for fortune…she did it because it was the will of God and
she yielded to it. And that’s why she could lay aside her
music career; that’s why she could push back her first
desires. And if we would just begin to do that, this whole

“Watching the entire homegoing services for Coretta Scott
King on television triggered numerous emotions for me. It
felt as if I was watching my own mother being laid to rest.
My most memorable moment was seeing the multitudes of
many come from near and far to pay homage and their
last respects to the mother of racial equality. The mandate
for ‘KINGdom business’ has been established; the call has
been initiated. The question is: Will we stand as a people
of God and answer that call?”

no kind act

Good deed reports began to swell
the New Birth e-mail inbox after Bishop
Long announced in April the goal to
achieve 100,000 Acts of Kindness by the
end of the year. The numbers are up, but
we’re still reaching for the goal. So keep
them coming. Every effort goes a long
way in helping to change the world.
Here are just a few examples of what
New Birth family members have been up
to lately…
“I met this young single mother who was
having her labor induced and she stated
that she did not have anyone to go to the
hospital with her while she was giving
birth—not even her mother. So I offered
to go with her. I was there to support her
today while her labor was induced and
she had a healthy 7lb 2oz baby girl.”
“I sowed $600 to the Missions
Department to enable one of the missionaries to go to the Dominican
Republic.”
“On Aug. 18, I ran into a woman in

Atlanta who was in need of transportation to her job. She
had a cast on her foot and was trying to get to the MARTA
station. I was in a hurry and already late for work. She
stopped me in the lobby of the building where we were at
the time and asked me which direction I was heading. With
somewhat of an attitude I told her ‘north on 75.’ She asked
me if I could take her to the train station and before I
could tell her no, the Holy Spirit convicted me. I agreed to
take her, and instead of dropping her off at MARTA, I took
her to her job in Marietta.”

17, 2006 when Wanda
Dunham was appointed
the first woman and
first African-American
to be Chief of Police for
the Metropolitan
Atlanta Rapid Transit
Authority (MARTA).
Dunham has served
with the MARTA Police
Department since 1987
and was appointed
interim Police Chief
after the former Chief
MARTA’s Chief of Police
resigned in 2005. She was
Wanda Dunham
also the first female member of the Department to achieve the ranks of Captain,
Major and Assistant Chief.
Thirty percent of police officers in the United States
are female. Only one percent of female officers are Chiefs
of Police. The numbers of African-American Police Chiefs
are less than that. Chief Dunham is shaking history.
She never dreamed about being police chief. “When I
went to work as a Marta police officer, I thought I would
work there for a couple of years and move on to something more interesting,” says Chief Dunham. “Twenty
years later, I’m the chief of the department.”
She adds, “It was not a goal I went in with, but as time
went on, things started lining up. The more I prayed and
asked for guidance, I knew my footsteps were
ordered by the Lord and that He had a plan
for my life.” On being a history maker,
Dunham says, “I still find it hard to believe. I
am humbled by the fact that people recognize me for what I love to do.”
The Police Chief faces enormous challenges
because she is a black woman working in an
environment that is dominated by men and
whites. She keeps her late grandfather’s
favorite saying at the forefront of her mind:
“Stay Prayed Up.” She has a strong prayer
life, stays connected with Christians at work,
and surrounds herself with prayer partners
that know how to intercede for her.
Chief Dunham has a vision: “I want the
Marta Police Department to be one of the
finest agencies in the country. I want people
to know us not just for buses and trains, but
for our training and well qualified police officers.” The three goals she has set for the
department are integrity, accountability and
professionalism. In 2007, she will implement
several new initiatives that will benefit the riding public and surrounding communities.
One of Dunham’s most memorable
moments in 2006 was being featured in the
August issue of Ebony magazine, and then on
Aug. 12, receiving a national community
service award from the National Association
of Black Law Enforcement Officers.
Wanda Dunham’s husband of 18 years,
Dwight Dunham, is also a police officer and
has directed New Birth traffic for more than
10 years. They have one son, Jordan.
When it comes to making history, Chief
Dunham follows in the footsteps of her
mother, Minnie Gresham, who has made her
mark as an esteemed charter member of New
Birth Missionary Baptist Church.

They immediately began packing once they
heard Mayor Ray Nagin announce the mandatory evacuation for New Orleans residents because of Hurricane
Katrina. With no gas available in their area, Kalvin and
Jeanette Henry jumped in their truck, only _ full of gas,
and headed to Atlanta where Mrs. Henry had a sister,
Sharon Franklin.
The drive that normally took 6.5 hours took 18. The
ordeal was harrowing in the Ford 150 truck with no air
conditioning…bumper to bumper cars, many of which
had run out of gas, sitting hopelessly on the side of the
road; rain pelting down on suitcases tied down with plastic
in the back of the truck; darkness settling in eerily with
strong wind, getting stronger and stronger. With no gas in
sight, they dared not stop; Jeanette tried to focus on the
Bible in her lap instead of what she could see…

Moving forward in Atlanta: Kalvin and Jeanette Henry
or did it?
One year after Hurricane Katrina, Kalvin
Henry reflects on the thoughts he had immediately after this drastic event. Sitting in his sisterin-law’s home in Atlanta, he thought, “Maybe
in about a month we could go back home.” But
after seeing the devastation, ruin and shocking
level of flooding in their neighborhood on the
news, he says they no longer saw hope in going
home anytime soon.
After surviving Katrina’s initial waves of pain
and struggle, the Henry’s began to look at
Atlanta as a possible home. During the first
week after Katrina, Jeanette and her husband
went to a movie. While waiting on her sister and
daughter after the movie, her husband began to
sing a song with the words, “…He did not
bring me out this far to take me back again…”
“That was also in my heart,” Jeanette says.
“Not until a couple of weeks ago when we

decided to buy a house did it hit us—that was what
God was speaking to us, to bring us to something better.” Furthermore, she realized, “We weren’t living that
good in New Orleans; we were not living our best. My
eyes are opened; black people can live better.”
Jeanette admits that it’s hard for one to get accustomed to a lifestyle and then go backwards. “That’s
not God, and that’s not me. Even Jesus came on the
earth and stayed for 32 years, but guess what? He
came for a reason, as an example, and there is better.
He’s back in glory where He came from and is trying
to get us there.”
As far as their home in New Orleans, the Henrys
are leaning towards rebuilding and selling. They also
have to rebuild their lives here in Atlanta. In New
Orleans, Kalvin owned a lawn care business, of which
every piece of equipment was destroyed.
With many years of active Christian experience in
New Orleans, the Henrys naturally wanted to find a
church home after realizing that they would be in
Atlanta for quite a while. As a church leader and head
usher in New Orleans, Kalvin also preached in the
church. “We had Bible studies on Thursdays for five to
six years in our home.” Jeanette recalls. “My husband
loves to teach, and I would counsel and minister.”
They tried several churches in Atlanta but felt as if
they were not growing spiritually. Kalvin says things
changed when they hit the campus of New Birth. “As
soon as we got on the property I felt the anointing of
God [and thought] this is where we belong,” he says.
Jeanette’s thoughts were similar: “When we walked
on the grounds, it was like we were in heaven, in a
different world. We just loved it.”
that settles it
Today, Henry and his wife Jeannette are peacefully
settled in Atlanta, having recently purchased a house.
After discovering that FEMA would no longer foot
the bill for their Stone Mountain apartment, the
Henry’s decided that their money would be better
invested in something they could call their own. After
a 10-month process, they found a Lithonia home they
are really pleased with near New Birth.
The Katrina evacuation experience has not only
given the Henrys a new place to call home, but it has
forever changed their perspective on life. They walk in
a new wisdom and a new way. Here are some
of their thoughts today:
Kalvin Henry: “Everything is not in concrete. Everything you own—it really doesn’t
belong to you—it belongs to God. And that
will help you depend more upon Him and
not on the things that you have. I had to
think on this a while and say, “Man, we had a
nice house, nice furniture, nice clothes and
shoes. I had to think that, ‘Hey, God has
given it to me, but it didn’t belong to me.’
It’s a joy [to not have to] worry about it. For
me, it’s a new type of freedom.”
Jeanette Henry: “The storm changed my
life. I was so busy working in my ministry; I
didn’t have time to really enjoy my home.
My husband wanted to go to Wal-Mart; I
hated Wal-Mart. Now I love Wal-Mart! I
used to dress up really well; now I go in jeans
and flip-flops. I don’t have all the jewelry; all
that stuff is gone. I am not looking to replace
it. Those things just don’t matter anymore.
I’m free!”
An employee in New Birth’s Christian
Education Department, Jeannette Henry still
attends New Birth along with her husband.
They are settling in for a long stay—maybe
for good—in Atlanta.

“Bless God for the Men”
Bishop Eddie L. Long and the New Birth men took a stand to make
God’s presence known throughout the halls of three area high schools
beginning in September. On Fridays, men arrived at Lithonia, Miller
Grove and Stephenson high schools bright and early to cover the
grounds in prayer and to be at school before kids even arrived on the
school buses. “We want our young people to be able to get an education in a safe and pleasant environment,” Bishop Long told the congregation. “Our presence will help the overall conduct in the schools, and
it shows that the men care and the community cares.”
Bishop Long issued a summons in October for more men to join the
ranks and make a difference in the lives of the next generation. Once
the program started, parents and educators couldn’t get enough!
“We’re in three schools now, but 15 more want us,” Bishop Long
explained. “Women, you’re next, so get ready!”

UNITY PRAYER—
FORCE OF ONE!

S H A R O N
F R A M E
On Sept. 17, Christians from about 40 Atlanta-area
congregations joined spiritual forces and turned the home of
the Atlanta Hawks into a 21st century upper-room.
Fierce competition rules on the hardwood during basketball season. But on this day, one united team showed up,
with one game plan, and no reason to keep score or watch
the clock. Racial and denominational rivalry was checked at
the gate. A cheering, jubilant crowd of 10,000 strong praised
and prayed on one accord.
“Surely God’s presence was in the building,” recounted
Reona Thomas. The elder from New Birth was among those
who witnessed the supernatural release, as God honored the
prayers of the righteous. “To see the pastors of different
denominations gather to pray against what was dividing
them was awesome.” She said it reminded her of the day of
Pentecost described in the book of Acts. “…especially when
the Word was read in Spanish, in my mind I was going wow,
this is how the people must have felt from the different
nationalities, when they could hear the teachings of God
being spoken in their own language.” That mighty spiritual
move 2,000 years ago laid the cornerstone for Christianity,
destroyed racial and culture barriers, and united Jews and
Gentiles under one faith.
Fast forward to 2006, and Laura Douglas sees the Philips
Arena prayer service as potentially another major turning
point and an opportunity for the body of Christ in Atlanta to
achieve lasting unity.
“One Lord, one faith, one baptism,” she said with excitement. “We are baptized into one body. If we come together
in the city of Atlanta and join hands and hearts, God will
bring change.”
Laura and her husband William are members of Trinity
Chapel Church of God. Their pastor, Bishop Jim Bolin, was
among the group of Black, White and Hispanic pastors who
publicly cried out to God. Some repented on behalf of the
people for harboring division and resentment. Others
declared victory over “the giant of racism” and prejudice in
the church. They vowed to lay down their egos and speak
with one voice. All rallied around the words Jesus Christ
uttered as He prayed for believers in John 17: 11, 22: “that
they may be one, even as we are one.”
William Douglas says he expects breakthrough to take
place, and for Christians to “get together, not just in a big
conference center, but from house to house, like they did in
the book of Acts.” His wife says for that to happen, white
Christians must be more willing to step out of their comfort
zone and help bridge the
racial divide. As a white
woman, she said she was
a bit disappointed the
crowd did not have a
stronger racial mix.
“Where are the white
people?” she asked out
loud. “It breaks my heart,

American. But many
people saw signs of a new season. “There is no way that
this could be considered just another prayer meeting,”
Elder Thomas declared. “I actually met people of different
races and denominations and everyone’s heart was so open
to being together in this one place worshiping the one true
and living God. There was so much love and it was as
though we all forgot who our pastors were and the churches we belonged to, and focused on who our Savior is.”
Atlanta pastors who joined their hearts in September’s
Unity Prayer vow to make sure this new movement doesn’t
stop. As a show of solidarity, they publicly broke bread and
took communion together. The Blood sealed a new commitment to submit to each other. “No more fighting in the
family,” one pastor said. “The city will have a strong example
of what it means to be one.”
This citywide prayer service might prove to be a watershed moment in “a year of reference” for the body of
Christ in Atlanta. Bishop Eddie L. Long declared it a new
day of divine favor, generational blessings and Kingdom
authority.
The spiritual atmosphere had shifted over the city, he
said. And this “force of one” has no limits nor boundaries.

OCTOBER SPOTLIGHT
it’s his time
YOUNG PRAYZR. . .
RECKLESSLY ON A
ROLL FOR GOD
w o r d s
b y
L I S A
B I R C H
The entire month of October presented a whirlwind of
ministry opportunities for one of God’s youngest generals who
has feverishly pursued his mission of taking the Gospel of Jesus
Christ to the streets.
You probably first encountered Tony Betton, Jr. in August
2005, spittin’ a
rap to Clint
Brown’s “Get In
or Sell Out” with
the Next
Generation
Children’s Choir.
Today you may
know him as
Young Prayzr
(YP), a young,
powerful example
of God’s favor in
full effect!
With an undeniable talent and a
clearly visible
anointing, this 10year-old recording
artist and emcee is
dedicated to
reaching the mass“Get crunk for Christ; that’s wassup!”
es of all ages and
races. Since he first
stepped into the world of hip-hop just one year ago, YP has
blessed audiences with his ministry on at least 90 occasions,
including an impromptu performance requested by Kirk
Franklin himself. He has shared the stage as opening artist for
such performers as Charles & Taylor, D-Class, Canton Jones,
Platinum Souls, Nova 4 Jehovah, comedian Johnathan Slocum
and many others. “God has done so much so fast,” says the YP.

WINTER 2006
“My resume is crazy and my booking schedule
is crazier. It’s a lot, but I love it and I have so
much fun doing it.”
Like an arrow shot from its bow, Young
Prayzr’s gifts have been quickly propelled onto a
national platform. His debut single “Hittin’
Dem Streets!” was selected for the Grammy
nominated Holy Hip-Hop Compilation CD
Series Vol. 4, which was distributed in October
by EMI Gospel. His independent debut CD
titled “Here
Comes The
Young
Prayzr!” is
ready for
release. He
was recently
featured during a worldwide online interview
and song feature on the Brother Tee Show
(Trinity Radio Network) and has garnered the
spotlight in six newspaper articles.
These days, YP is commanding the attention
of everybody, even major music industry executives. Dominque Mitchell, chairman and CEO
of Music Business Associates, Inc., was so
impressed with Young Prayzr’s performance in
the Crowe’s Nest Megaplex talent competition
that he invited the young emcee to be the opening artist for his private birthday party. Mitchell
also invited YP to have a cameo appearance in
the filming of the video for rap duo 20 East featuring the group 112 and R&B artist Ciara.
And for the YP, it doesn’t stop at music. He is
the winner of a freelance modeling/acting contract with the National Board’s Model
Productions Atlanta and has appeared on four
episodes of Cartoon Network with Nick
Cannon, Sammie, DaBack Wudz and Jessie
McCartney. In the midst of it all, Young Prayzr
stays focused on his soul-winning mission. “He
is very bold and confident, yet humble with a
childlike innocence,” says mom and manager
Sheryl Brown. “People always comment on his
charisma and anointing.”

Young Prayzr attends school everyday and is very
popular among the children, teachers and parents.
In the spirit of excellence, he is committed to maintaining his A/B-grade status and has been a part of
the gifted program since Kindergarten. He thrives
on keeping a record of no absences and no tardies.
So very humble and grateful for what God has
accomplished through him thus far, YP and his
mom Sheryl express sincere appreciation to Bishop
Long, First Lady and the entire New Birth family,
The Next Generation Children’s Choir and Choir
Director Christine Bellfield. A hearty “thank you”
also goes to YP’s voice trainer and producer Robert
“RAab” Stevenson and to his rhyming partner,
William “M.A.J.O.R.S.” Brown, both of who
Sheryl says “have sown their time and talents in a
true and spirit-led desire to assist ‘a 9-year-old kid’
with his artist development and his dream to do his
first musical project.”
So brace yourself, because “Here Comes The
Young Prayzr!”—shattering the world’s perception
of what God can accomplish with a child.

I am Woman!
Elder Vanessa Long and the
Heart to Heart Women’s Ministry
journeyed to Chattanooga,
Tenn., Oct. 12-14 in the spirit
of Psalm 139:14. Bishop Eddie
L. Long joined the First Lady in
ministering to women who
traveled from near and far to
make a public proclamation: “I am Woman,
Fearfully and Wonderfully Made!” Pastor Chi Chi
Bismark, Pastor Paula White, Bishop Vashti
McKenzie, Psalmist Latrice Pace-Speights, Bishop
Kevin Adams and First Lady Cynthia Adams of
Olivet Baptist Church were just a few of the guests
who spoke into the lives of conference attendees.
The talk show format—which covered the topics
of finance, spiritual growth, relationships, parenting and health—featured many of New Birth’s
own, including Elder Bernice King; Cheryl
Weems, Director of Counseling; Minister Lisa
Edwards, Director of Children’s Ministry; Minister
Sheila Aldridge, fitness expert; and Robin May,

News Every Woman Can Use…
“I Am Fearfully and Wonderfully Made!”
How awesome to know that God’s grace and mercy is brand new every single day! First Lady
Vanessa Long desires for every woman to be reminded of her newness in Christ on a daily basis.
One way to walk in it is to speak out loud that which you believe. The following confession from
the 2006 Heart to Heart Conference is a creed Elder Long hopes all women of New Birth will
embrace through the rest of the year and into 2007.
Z
LORD, YOU FORMED ME IN MY MOTHER’S WOMB AND YOU APPROVED OF ME. YOU KNOW
EVERYTHING ABOUT ME BECAUSE YOU METICULOUSLY SEARCHED MY VERY BEING. (JER. 1:5,
PSALM 139:1)
BECAUSE
E I AM
M FEARFULLY
Y AND
D WONDERFULLY
Y MADE!!
ALL MY WAYS ARE KNOWN TO YOU, MY HEAVENLY FATHER AND CREATOR. YOU KNOW MY
EVERY THOUGHT AND THERE IS NOT A WORD IN MY MOUTH, EVEN YET UNUTTERED THAT YOU
DO NOT KNOW. (PSALM 139:2-4)
BECAUSE
E I AM
M FEARFULLY
Y AND
D WONDERFULLY
Y MADE!!
YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF ME IS SO INFINITE IT CANNOT BE CONCEIVED OR COMPREHENDED. YOUR
PRESENCE SO SURROUNDS ME THAT THERE IS NO PLACE (HEAVEN NOR HELL) I CAN GO WITHOUT
YOU. (PSALM 139:6-8, ROM. 11:33)
BECAUSE
E I AM
M FEARFULLY
Y AND
D WONDERFULLY
Y MADE!!
WHETHER I DWELL IN THE UTTERMOST DEPTHS OF THE OCEAN I CAN COUNT ON YOU, MY
SHEPHERD, TO LEAD AND GUIDE ME WITH YOUR LOVING RIGHT HAND. (PSALM 139:9 & 10)
BECAUSE
E I AM
M FEARFULLY
Y AND
D WONDERFULLY
Y MADE!!
AS MUCH AS THE LIGHT DWELLS WITHIN YOU, YOU KNOW WHAT IS HIDDEN IN DARKNESS. YOU
SEE ALL THAT IS WITHIN ME, LIGHT AND DARKNESS. (PSALM 139:11-112, DAN. 2:22)
BECAUSE
E I AM
M FEARFULLY
Y AND
D WONDERFULLY
Y MADE!!
YOU CONNECTED MY INWARD PARTS AND UNFORMED SUBSTANCE IN MY MOTHER’S WOMB LIKE
AN INTRICATELY EMBROIDERED TAPESTRY. THOUGH THIS WAS DONE IN PRIVATE IT WAS NOT
HIDDEN FROM YOU. (PSALM 139:13, 15-16)
BECAUSE
E I AM
M FEARFULLY
Y AND
D WONDERFULLY
Y MADE!!
FATHER, YOUR THOUGHTS OF ME ARE PRECIOUS AND VAST. THEY ARE COUNTLESS THOUGHTS OF
PEACE AND HOPE FOR MY FUTURE. (PSALM 139:17-18, JER. 29:11)
BECAUSE
E I AM
M FEARFULLY
Y AND
D WONDERFULLY
Y MADE!!
BECAUSE OF YOUR AWESOMENESS WE CONFESS AND PRAISE YOU FOR WE ARE FEARFULLY AND
WONDERFULLY MADE! MARVELOUS ARE YOUR WORKS, AND THAT OUR SOULS KNOW VERY
WELL! (PSALM 139:14)
WE
E ARE
E FEARFULLY
Y AND
D WONDERFULLY
Y MADE…AMEN!!!
