Lily Stevens captured fall foliage and Z Cars (owned by Theo Hartmann and Jose Cardona)
on our cruise to West Virginia.
As our last cruise of the 2010
tour season, The Z Car Association of
Richmond paid a visit to Seneca Rocks,
West Virginia on November 6 and 7.
It’s impossible to think of our sister
state to the west without recalling
the iconic John Denver hit, “Country
Roads”, a song that pays homage to
this mysterious land of mountains,
moonshine, winding roads and country
scenery.
As president Chris Grigg noted on
his planned itinerary, “Mother Nature
does throw some curve balls…” and
she did just that, as our trip took
v i s i t
u s
us from the fairly warm temps of
Richmond to a blanket of snow at
Blackwater Falls.
Saturday morning November 6,
seven Zs and 13 club members (Tammy
Brackett and Chris Grigg, Theo and Tom
Hartmann, Lillian and Sam Stevens,
Mark and Lorraine Meade, Chuck and
Nancy Fetty , Aleta and Ron Perkins,
and Jose Cardona) embarked on the
five hour planned drive to Seneca
Rocks WV, winding along route 522 to
Strasburg and then 55 West to Seneca
Rocks.

West Virginia

The scenery was spectacular.
The mountains along our drive
were bathed in great bands of
orange, yellow, golden brown
and red. Several stops were made
along 55 West to take photos and
stretch our legs. All cars performed
beautifully, loving the “nice cold
air through the intake…” as Chris
pointed out in his itinerary.
We arrived at our motel,
Yokum’s Vacationland, around 1:30
pm. The motel is owned by an
authentic West Virginia character
by the name of Shirley Yokum
who is 90 years old and seemed
to own the entire town of Seneca
Rocks. As the website describes,
Yokum’s is located on a 1,000
acre cattle farm along the banks
of the North Fork of the South
Branch of the Potomac River,
which originally included within its
bounds, the iconic Seneca Rocks,
a climbing Mecca and centerpiece
of the Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks
National Recreation Area.
It was clear from the outset
Yokums Motel was going to be
an experience, as we all checked
in and found handwritten and
signed notes from proprietor Mrs.
Shirley in our rooms pertaining
to check in rules, check out rules,
whining, complaining and certain
“housekeeping” disclaimers. It

was a definite “had to be there”
kind of experience! Chris noted
Seneca Rocks was a “very rural
area and amenities would be
limited. Anyone needing a 4 or 5
star restaurant and hotel will be
disappointed….” and our club
members adapted to the Spartan
surroundings with aplomb and
a spirit of humor and adventure.
After lunch at (you guessed it)
Yokum’s General Store’s Front Porch
Restaurant, it was on to our next
planned excursion.
Our drive was 20 miles up the
Allegheny Mountains to Blackwater
Falls State Park. At Yokum’s there
had been no trace of precipitation,
but as we approached Blackwater
Falls Park, the roadside began to
turn white with snow. Luckily, the
roads were completely passable
and mostly dry and except for
an annoying, continual splatter
of small pebbles thrown up by

our tires, the drive was a real joy
as our elevation gave us views of
ski slopes and mountains draped
in white. When we arrived at
Blackwater Falls, snow was pelting
down in gorgeous little flakes!
We all got our of our cars,
donned coats, scarves, gloves and
hats and descended a long wooden

October CCCV Meeting
by Chris Grigg
In October I attended my first Car Club Council of Central Va.
Meeting. I was surprised by the variety of different clubs in the area.
I spent part of the evening talking with the presidents of the Ford
Falcon club and the Military Vehicle club.
ZCAR is a member of this organization and I encourage all
members to take a look at their web site. There is a calendar of events
for those looking for car shows to attend and lots of automobile
information that pertains to all of us with classic/collector cars. z

Lucky 13?
by Chris Grigg
On Thursday, October 28th
the Richmond Z Car Association
was fortunate enough to get a
visit from the owners of the first
Datsun 240Z sold to the public in
the U.S. Rick Morgan and his wife,
Kathy, were on their way to the
Triangle Z car show in Wake Forest,
North Carolina from their home in
Connecticut.
We decided to meet at the
club’s monthly meeting spot,
Riversbend Grille, at around 6 pm.
Many club members as well as
friends and family showed up to
be a part of this rare opportunity.
Unfortunately Rick got caught in
DC traffic and was behind schedule.
We decided to have some dinner
while we wait for their arrival.
By 8:30, Rick arrived and
everyone gathered around the car
trailer awaiting the viewing of the
240Z. Silence fell upon the crowd
as the door fell open and revealed
Lucky #13.
The rest of the evening was
spent listening to stories from the
owner and photo ops with the car. I
believe I even heard the car still had
its original tires on it!
Thanks to Rick and Kathy for
sharing their pride and joy with the
club. Just goes to show you that
you just don’t know what’s hiding
in that barn in the backyard. z

Triangle Z Car Show

On October 30th Chuck
Fetty and I got our Zs cleaned
up and headed down to Wake
Forest, North Carolina to visit
and participate in the Triangle
Z Club’s car show. The weather
was great and the drive was
uneventful. We were warmly

Much to my surprise,
because of all the great Zs
in the show, I was awarded
second place in the Z32

We had a nice drive back to
Richmond and spent the evening

West Virginia
continued from page 3
After several group shots of the Z Cars, we decided to photograph people!
stairway through the Monongahela
National Forest to Blackwater Falls.
The way was slippery as the steps
were covered in an inch or so of ice
and snow but we carefully crept
along and were richly rewarded by
the sight of the spectacular falls!
As their web site explains, the
Blackwater Falls State Park is named
for the falls of the Blackwater River
whose amber-colored waters
plunge five stories then twist and
tumble through an eight-mile long
gorge. The “black” water is a result
of tannic acid from fallen hemlock
and red spruce needles. The falls
are one of the most photographed
sites in West Virginia and appear on
advertisements as well as being a
favorite photo for jigsaw puzzles.
We could not have been
more astounded watching the
amber water splash from the
snow covered rocks surrounded
by an actual winter wonderland
and took turns posing for our
members’ cameras which were
clicking away! Much too soon it
was time to leave our mystical little mountain adventure and
head back to Yokum’s for pizza and beverages for dinner.
As we all enjoyed the oddities
of Yokums General Store (a
prominently displayed stuffed
black bear, kitschy items like West
Virginia tee shirts, mugs, and
paraphernalia and a MOONSHINE
STILL in the corner), Chris and
Chuck Fetty were off on a private
mission to secure the club a nice
place to hang out, eat pizza and
have libations since our rooms
would not allow more than four of us to congregate. After a while they were back at
the General Store with an invitation
from Mrs. Yokum to use the upstairs
apartment featuring a living area
and kitchen above our block of
rooms as our personal party place
for the evening.
Pizza and libations were spread
out in the kitchen of the apartment
and we all gathered in the living
area to play games, tell stories
and jokes and most of all, laugh. I
found it odd that there was TV in
the room and no one seemed to
be interested in it at all, especially
when Tom Hartmann noted there
were only six stations to choose
from. We played tunes on iPhones,
ate, drank, had wonderful brownies
prepared by Mark and Lorraine
Meade and enjoyed each others
company. It was truly a grand
evening.
Sunday morning we were up
early to get breakfast and were
dismayed to find that Yokum’s
Motel Restaurant was dark and
deserted and coffee-less at 7:00
am. Luckily, around 7:50 am, Andy,
Mrs. Yokum’s (!) grandson came in
to make coffee and start cooking
breakfast but oddly none of the
other Yokum kin showed up to
work. Aleta Perkins pitched in to
take breakfast orders and I served
coffee and platters of food as
they came out of Andy’s kitchen.
Eventually, cousin Randy Yokum
came in and a few other neighbor
ladies showed up to help out but
by that time our intrepid car club
had taken over the restaurant.
Again, it was fun to witness the
flexibility and spirit of our members
as they patiently waited for
eggs,toast, ham and pancakes!

Zooming New England, Part I
(Coastal Massachusetts and Maine)
by Lillian Stevens
Cruising across the Penobscot Bay Bridge
Nine days, four people and two
370Zs. Sam and I recently returned
from an autumn vacation in New
England with our friends Russ and
Karen Meeker, perspective crossover members from the Tidewater Z
car club. Mid-October is a fantastic
time to see the vibrant colors of our
northernmost New England states.
Fall temps are perfect for exploring
the unique villages and landscapes
we encountered. Perfect for the
cars too, as the cool air ensured the
horsepower we required for our
daily spirited drives.
“Our cars were nimble, well
powered, and responsive to every
demand we put upon them.
Both the coupe and the roadster
performed flawlessly; the only real
concern was the possibility of a
fender bender or a speeding ticket,”
Sam said.
In the early dawn hours
on the first day of our trip, we
rendezvoused with the Meekers
at the entrance to the Chesapeake
Bay Bridge Tunnel. Our route
took us over the 20-mile span,
depositing us onto Maryland’s
Eastern Shore just as the sun
rose. The miles dropped away
as we continued north toward
I-95 through Delaware, into New
Jersey and New York. The Z’s
collected sporadic horn honks of
recognition as we navigated the
Jersey Turnpike. Then, arriving in
New York City, we found ourselves
slicing and dicing across the
massive George Washington Bridge
through heavy traffic. Amidst
the bumper to bumper traffic of
rush hour a couple of guys in the
Bronx broke the tension when they
yelled, “Hey yo – cool cars!” Nice
compliment, but it didn’t last long. Nerves wore thin as we literally
crept through the rest of the city
into Connecticut. By nightfall, with
rush hour finally behind us, we
navigated the remaining miles of
Massachusetts that separated us
from our destination for the day:
Rockport, which is located some 38
miles north of Boston. Three observations here. One, speeding in Delaware will
get you pulled for two over the
speed limit. Two, plan a separate
budget for tolls if you ever make
this trip (beyond the turnpikes
and interstates, the price tag just
to cross the George Washington
Bridge was a hefty twelve bucks).
And three, prepare to be in
unimaginable traffic if you ever
head to New England on the
Friday before Columbus Day. A
gazillion people were eastward
(or northward) bound, many with
the same plans (if not the same
horsepower) as our own. Finally we arrived in Rockport,

a quaint seaport village surrounded
on three sides by the rocky shores
of the Atlantic Ocean. We spent the
first night of our trip at a privatelyowned inn which was located a
block from the oceanfront, and
arose early the next morning to
explore the little town on foot.
Art galleries, a lobster shack,
spectacular churches, and tiny
bakeries/coffee shops lined the
narrow street – flanked by a small
harbor on one side and the ocean
on the other. We photographed
the little fudge shop which was
featured in the movie “The Proposal”
and enjoyed authentic Austrian
strudel at Helmut’s Strudel which
boasts a back deck with sweeping
views overlooking the harbor.
Around mid-day we packed
the cars and headed a dozen or
so miles to Gloucester – to drive
the coastal road and see the old
Victorian mansions built upon the
rocky coast. Also, I wanted to have
a beer at the Crow’s Nest, the bar
made famous by the movie “The
Perfect Storm.” But there was no
time for much more than a fly-by,
Russ was double-parked, and the
bar isn’t that spectacular anyway.
So we pointed our cars north
and shot up the coast, crossing the
scenic Penobscot Bay on Route 1
just before sailing into Bar Harbor,
Maine. For dinner, the unanimous
choice was lobster so we randomly
picked a restaurant from the travel
guide provided in our motel room.
Quaint Bar Harbor, Maine.
The place was called “Chowdahs”
but it doesn’t matter. You could
blindfold yourself and point your
finger in any direction spanning the
length and breadth of the state of
Maine, and enjoy fresh lobster – at
a price of $4.99 per pound.
After unwinding over drinks
and a magnificent dinner, we
returned to our motel for some
much needed rest. The next
morning, we made our way to
the harbor that all others aspire
to be: Bar Harbor. We wanted to
shoot photos and plot our course
for the day’s drive. The plan was
to steer the Z’s through Acadia
National Park – which turned
out to be a good plan. The twisty
roads delivered us beautifully (but
slowly) to the summit of Cadillac
Mountain where we viewed and
photographed the Atlantic from
a whole new vantage point. The
large cruise ships in Bar Harbor
looked so small…
The tallest mountain in Acadia
National Park, Cadillac Mountain
is accessible by a winding and
narrow, 3.5-mile road to the summit
which, at 1,530 feet, is also the
tallest mountain along the eastern
coast of the United States. Rising
high above the town of Bar Harbor,
the mountain offers magnificent
views of the Porcupine Islands and
Frenchman Bay.
From there, we set out to
find a lighthouse. We had seen
a few in the harbor at Rockport
but Karen and Russ, professional
photographers, had a creative
vision forming that involved the
two cars in front of a lighthouse. Inside a half hour, Route 102A
delivered us at Bass Harbor which
boasts the only lighthouse on
Mount Desert Island. Currently
a private residence for the
commander of the local Coast
Guard unit, the lighthouse has short

Our lineup of Z Cars and drivers in front of one of the radio telescopes.

At 9:00 am we headed toward
Green Bank WV to the National
Radio Astronomy Observatory.
As their web site explains, NRAO
operates the Robert C. Byrd Green
Bank Telescope (GBT), the world’s
largest fully steerable single
aperture antenna. In addition to the
GBT, several other telescopes exist
at the Green Bank site. The Reber
Telescope is widely considered
to be the world’s FIRST radio
telescope. We had a guided tour of the
grounds and its collection of radio
telescopes, which were like big
satellite dishes. The grounds were
lovely and it was fascinating to get
a glimpse into the scientific search
for extraterrestrial intelligence. Our
guide was very knowledgeable and
we ended our tour with lunch at the
Star Light Café in the observatory.
We also had a great photo op for
our cars and drivers with the Green
Bank Telescope as a backdrop.
Route 33 on the way home
was very similar to Tail of the
Dragon and we all had a great time
navigating peaks and valleys and
hairpin turns.
There was no better way to
round out a great year of cars and camaraderie than the beautiful
trip to Seneca Falls West Virginia.
The drive, the folks we met, and
the stunning scenery made for an
exciting and memorable adventure
for our club! z

spectacular views. We weren’t able to get our cars
close enough for a photo shoot
– heck, it was hard enough getting
our bodies close enough for a
close-up view of the lighthouse, but
we got as close as it’s legal to get. Rebels that they are, Sam ventured
beyond the “no trespassing sign”
while the Meekers climbed all over
the rocks with essential camera gear
and tripods swinging to and fro. I
was content to enjoy the views and
shoot photos from the well-traveled
walkway.
From Bass Harbor, the next
leg of our journey took us west
