President’s Message
by Valerie Dzbynski
I came back a few weeks ago from the SHRM National Conference in Orlando.
Always a lot of good information and to see the magnitude of Human Resources
Professionals there is amazing and a huge reminder that Human Resources is an area
that is constantly changing. It is so important to continue to learn and grow in this
profession because the ever changing legal environment will leave you in the dust if
you do not keep on top of it.
Speaking of which…..it is hard to believe that we are already midway through the
summer and Cumberland Valley SHRM’s biggest event of the year is approaching!
The 2014 Legal & Legislative Conference is the event that you do not want to miss. For
less than $100 you will get legal expert advice on hot topics in the employment arena. I
always look forward to this event to see all my HR peers in the community and to hear
all the legal changes and updates. Don’t forget to register early for a discount!
I am looking forward to seeing everyone there and starting up our monthly meetings

Legal & Legislative Updates

Workplace Investigations Restricted by the NLRB - According to the NLRB, an employer is restricted as
to when it can require employees to keep information about a workplace investigation confidential. An HR
executive or supervisor can only require confidentiality for limited reasons such as the risk of witness
tampering. See the SHRM website legal issues section for details.
Supreme Court Rules on ACA Birth Control Requirement - On June 30, the court ruled that a “closely
held” corporation may deny employees health insurance covering any contraceptive method that conflicts
with the company’s religious beliefs.
Employment Law and Legislative Conference - Save the date, September 19th, to join your colleagues at
this year'
s conference!!! The past 12 months have been marked with momentous changes employment laws at
the federal level and in each of the Chapter'
s three states. All this will be covered along with the timely topics
about social media, wage and hour, medical marijuana, and health/welfare. Sign up now for the early bird
discount. Registration information is on the CVSHRM website.
