Autumn days…
So the long dry September days which stretched into October are firmly behind us and
autumn is upon us. I have to confess that autumn is one of my favourite seasons. I just
the love the array of colours as trees and shrubs give up their foliage: yellows, oranges
and reds that are all part of the autumn season. Pair those colours with a crisp blue sky
and it is magical. Even on grey misty days those colours still seem to be able to shine
through and give a touch of warmth to the soul.
Of course autumn colours and trees dropping their leaves is nature’s survival process for
the harsh realities of winter to come where sunny days give way to sharp frosts and the
threat of snow. Trees, shrubs and other plant life survive the winter by withdrawing into
themselves and entering a dormant state. Yet even in autumn and throughout the dark
days of winter there is the hint of a promise of spring and the new life it brings
In this cycle of seasons there is a life lesson for us. Life deals its winter days at us. Days
of trouble and strife where we withdraw within ourselves. Days of sadness and grief and
days of trial and sorrow. In the midst of those days there is a promise of new life to
come, of a spring to dawn and for new growth to sprout forth.
Of course in the midst of those dark days it can be difficult to find those promises but we
can find them in God’s Word and in his promise of new life in Jesus. It is a promise that
affirms the individual value of every human being and it is a promise that affirms that
each person - that includes you - is loved and upheld by God. That promise holds true
even in the darkest of days and even when we think ourselves not worthy of it.
In the darkest of times God holds you and he has made that love known in Jesus. How do
we grab hold of it? How do we cling onto it? Simple! All you have to do is ask. A few
words muttered in desperation or a conversation spoken as if God was by your side - it
does not matter which. Ask for God’s help, ask that the love of Jesus will flood your
heart and he will do just that.
So may your days be full of glory, the warm golds of autumn and fresh greens of spring
and may the grace of God flood your soul and brighten your winter days with the
warmth of his love.
Blessings

Come for coffee - It’s for Macmillan
Fenwick Friends would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who
supported the recent MacMillan Coffee Morning – at the time of writing,
the magnificent total of £705 has been raised. There are too many people
involved in making this event such a success to name individually but the
help and support of everyone who bakes, donates prizes, works behind the
scenes, comes along and supports the event is very much appreciated.
Thanks too are due to Fenwick Church who allow us to use their facilities
each year for free – this helps ensure that every penny raised goes straight
to MacMillan.

The Fulton Club
On Wednesday 7th October, members enjoyed a hilarious game
of Bingo, with no-one bothering too much about the rules!
Many thanks to Dorothy for providing a bingo machine and
acting as bingo caller.
The next meeting is on November 4th. We will have bowling
and dominoes, and there will be a Christmas-themed Raffle.
Members are reminded to bring their menu choices for the
Christmas Lunch on 2nd December. We will be taking names for
the shopping trip to Cumnock Factory outlet (18th November).
The Garden Club
On Thursday 16th October we had a most stimulating talk from
Katrina Clow, who showed us slides of her garden, and told us
about the plants which are most successful in the conditions
which prevail in her garden.
We all came away inspired by her enthusiasm, and a little bit
awed by her knowledge of the Latin names!
Our next meeting will be on Thursday 26th November (N.B.
please note date), when the speaker will be Lorna Watson of
Caulders Braidbar Nurseries.

SAN FAIRY ANN
As a young girl growing up in Ayrshire, I was well used to hearing the phrase ‘San Fairy
Ann’ but never really knew what it meant or where it came from but it was always
delivered with a shrug of the shoulders and the inference that whatever had happened was
just one of those things. However, during the preparation for the Lest We Forget weekend, one of those coincidences (or as Sharon might say a ‘Godincidence’) occurred when I
came across an article in The Herald which provided an explanation of San Fairy Ann and
its Ayrshire connections. It all makes sense now and I found the poem particularly
poignant.
During World War One many Scots turned to verse in an attempt to voice their response
to all that was going on around them and some can be found in Songs of an Ayrshire
Yeoman by David Mackie from which this poem is taken. It would seem that San Fairy
Ann is a play on the French ‘ça ne fait rien’ which translates as ‘it doesn’t really matter’.
As we approach Remembrance Sunday I thought that it was maybe appropriate to hear the
story and read the poem:
San Fairy Ann
We found this phrase across in France,
Whene’er the bloomin’ War began,
And now we shrug ourselves and say,
When things go wrong: “San Fairy Ann”.
You maybe can pronounce it right,
For we are just the “also ran”
Where proper language is concerned –
But, after all, “San Fairy Ann”.
For in this bloomin’ War of ours,
We’ve found it aye the better plan
To laugh at life when things go wrong,
And turn to old “San Fairy Ann”.
When grease is swimming in the tea,
Or we have lost our rusty can,
Or “dough” is done, or leave is stopped,
We still have got “San Fairy Ann”.
Ah! This is our philosophy,
However rough the goods may pan,
We grouse a bit, and swear a bit,
And then it’s just “San Fairy Ann”.
And if we have to stop the lead,
Then may we meet it like a man –
And say, whatever may befall,
“It’s just our luck – ‘San Fairy Ann’”.
