Sweetie’s New Leg!
Sweetie is a
sheep that
came to the
farm almost 2
years ago.
She was missing her front
leg at the
knee from an
unfortunate
accident
when she was
born. Her
mom had
stepped on
her and broken her leg,
so the farmer
banded her
leg and let it
fall off. Another neighbor took Sweetie in and raised her in her
home until she grew too big for the house and then called CBP to
help. Because it was a front leg, we could tell that Sweetie was
going to have issues as her whole body frame was changing as she
tried to compensate for the missing limb. We searched for ideas
and experts to help us come up with a prosthetic leg. It was Mary
Fisher, Board Member, who found Christopher Lange, CPO, Clinic
Manager Area Lead Team CNY of Hanger Clinic who agreed to help
us with Sweetie. On April 24, 2015 Chris came with leg in hand and
we tried it on. Her whole frame shifted and she stood upright and
straight for the first time since she came to the farm! It was an
amazing site to see and tears flowed as she took her first steps.
Our Cow Barn Manager, Jeff Stevens continues to work with
Sweetie and her leg, strengthening all those muscles that have to
compensate for her new posture. Chris continues to make visits to
the farm to check up on Sweetie’s progress and make adjustments
to her new leg. But we are optimistic that she will be outside this
summer enjoying the sun and grass soon! We would like to send a
sincere and warm Cracker Box Thank EWE to both Christopher
Lange and Mary Fisher for this wonderful new chance for Sweetie!
This would be our fourth amazing Day of Caring with volunteers
from Team Xerox, along with volunteers from ARC, Genesee
Land Trust, Trail Works and of course, Cracker Box Palace. This
year was an all time record for us too with 107 volunteers here
working on everything from the Goat Wall ‘rebuild’ (pictured
above), two teams took on cleaning up trails to get them ready
for the hikes and horse back rides this summer, Pig Pen repair, a
new cement pad behind the Horse Barn to avoid the mud,
Horse Barn cleaning and Laundry, (there were horse blankets
hanging EVERYWHERE to dry!) And they washed them by hand

United Way’s Day of Caring
Another Amazing Day On The Farm!
Outstanding in our Fields!
This page is dedicated to introduce the amazing volunteers and businesses
that help support the animals and keep the farm running on a daily basis!
Melissa DePauw is pictured right with Quaker, our handsome 15
year old thoroughbred gelding, who came to us back in 2009. Melissa has
been working on getting Quaker back in shape and as you can see, wearing
a saddle again! Quaker had always been a very nervous horse away from
the barn and has some arthritis in a front ankle, but Melissa has patiently
worked with him and now I think he even enjoys coming over to the arena
for his work outs! Melissa runs her own Salon in Newark, Eclips Hair Studio
and still finds time to come out and help us with barn cleaning, planting the
garden, attending our events and helping with just about anything! Thank
you Melissa for joining the team and for the wonderful new idea for pallet
garden planting! She always has a smile on her face and a wonderful personality that is contagious, even to horses! Quaker just loves her!
Duane Hebblethwaite
Duane came to us via Shiva, a personable
little pot belly pig that he adopted last year. We found him returning every weekend after that to volunteer in the Cow Barn, help with the barn chores, and of
course with the pigs! Duane himself had a large hog named Durok that needed a
friend, thus the adoption of Shiva, pictured to the
left. He is thoroughly knowledgeable about porcine and has been a wealth of information to our
staff and volunteers about our piggies. It is always
so refreshing to find a hog enthusiast and we enjoy
his visits every weekend! But the story doesn’t end
there. Duane has
recently adopted
Hamlet and Puck!
(Two more of our
pot belly pigs). He had also rented a machine to
help dig out all the barns this spring and clean up
the Cow Barn with ease! Recently Duane was
here when our LART team was called out on an
emergency and now he’s interested in joining the
team too! Thank you Duane for coming to our
farm! You are a wonderful addition
Gwen Hoffman—Gwen came to our Volunteer Orientation last year and has
been here religiously every week for Bunny Care ever since! Gwen even spent her
birthday here and gave a donation to the farm! I looked at her confused and said,
‘aren’t we suppose to give you a present on your birthday?’ Gwen is a semi-retired
teacher from Wayne Central. She explained that she has to have her time, every
week, with her bunny friends and proudly wears shavings and timothy hay in her
hair home every time she visits and advertises for us about Cracker Box Palace!
Thank you Gwen for sharing your time with our rabbits! They appreciate your care
(and so do we!)

New Arrivals—
2 New Holland rabbits arrived at the farm but have already been spoken for as soon as they complete their vet visit this
month!
Camona (pictured left) is a big, beautiful
Warmblood that arrived this spring. She has an
infection in her back hock which ended her jumping career. She is a sponsored horse and is an
impressive lady!
Pepsi ([pictured right) is our newest ‘retiree’.
Pespis is an older throroughbred mare. She had a
surgery that has prevented her riding but has made
new friends with another thoroughbred mare, Clarice
in the mare’s pasture. Welcome Pepsi!
CBS is a young, male peacock, that was found wandering
around Sodus Point. He was brought to the farm and is living with
the chickens for now.
Mozzerella the turkey has now joined the Cow Barn!
Adoptions and Foster Care One of our roosters and two of our hens join the Ford
family of N Rose.
Gabby Roddy is now the proud family of Tofu the rabbit! I can’t remember anyone
so excited about getting her own rabbit! Congratulations Gabriell!
Karen Costich also opened up her family to add our Peahen to her lonely peacock.
She also added Karl and Coffee the rabbits to her home! Thank you Karen for extending your family!

Story Book Tour with Community Reads Program
July 18, 2015 1pm—3pm! Dress like your favorite animal and come
enjoy the day with the animals and their storybook readers!
The Easter Bunny Visited the Farm and
the Kids!
With snow on the ground still, the Easter Bunny’s helpers hid eggs
and gave out toys and books, donated by Literacy Volunteers, for
the annual Farm Easter Egg Hunt. Over 500 eggs were stuffed by
our friends at Wayne ARC . Thank you to all that donated candy
and toys for this year’s hunt. And a special thanks to Katie Broach
and Jennifer Williams of Clyde-Savannah High School and Laura
and Caitlyn Harrington that helped the Easter Bunny hide all those
eggs!
We had beautiful weather and wonderful people here to meet the horses and tour the farm for our first
ASPCA Help A Horse Day! Winners of the $200 Gift Shop certificate went to Mina Talma and her friend
Averie! Congratulations girls!
Blessing of the Farm over Memorial Day Weekend had
beautiful weather and a small, but wonderful congregation to remember the animals and volunteers that have left us in the past, and to
bless the volunteers that keep working on the farm to take care of the
animals we have here and the animals yet to come to us. A special
thank you for a beautiful sermon provided by Pastor Sandy Stocia of
the Pultneyville United Methodist Church. Your words give us comfort
and strength to keep doing what we do. Bless you and thank you.

Farm News—
Cracker Box Palace welcomes our newest Board Member, Janet Halasinski of Sodus Point! She has taken on
the Secretary’s position on the board of directors! Janet also pitched in for The Day of Caring and ran the West
Barn Gift Shop Project for the day. Thank you so much Janet and here’s to a new and exciting new year at CBP!
The Garden is planted and growing already! We would like to thank The Cooperative Extension and Jim Miller, Master Gardner for the tips and plants. Also thank you to Wayne ARC for the tomatillos plants! That’s
new for us! Thank you Derek Poole for the donation of plants and working with the kids this summer on Tuesdays. We also would like to thank Gus Friedel for the real deal on the rototiller! That will make our weeding
SO much easier! Thank you Mike Madison and Belle Terre Farms for the use of the big rototiller to get the garden started! And thank all of you that helped us plant, weed, pick up stones and thank you Melissa Depauw for
the pallet garden idea for our leafy vegetables!
This spring the Board had to make some difficult decisions. The first was to cancel our 2015 Farm Camp. Our
previous director, Maryanne Whyte, was unable to be our director this year. It goes without saying that the skills
required to run a children’s Farm Camp are unique and rare, and we wanted to make sure that our camper’s had
a safe and fun experience. Therefore we felt it was the best to regroup and start our planning process now for
the 2016 sessions. The next was to postpone Farm Frenzy from its original June date, hopefully it will be back
on the schedule this fall so stay tuned.
RAISE THE ROOF CAMPAIGN!
Our newest campaign is to raise $40K to fix
the Cow Barn and Museum Barn roofs.
They are leaking all the way through all
three floors now to the basements. And
everyone that owns a barn knows how important a barn’s roof is. We have started a

out a garage door
and built a new wall
and door under the
Bunkhouse so our
pipes don’t freeze
again in the winter months. The handicapped accessible
bathroom got more work done on it for the Bunkhouse.
The Horse Barn also had the front corner fixed as it was
rotting away. The Gift Shop in the West Barn got new
walls. One team worked on hoeing out the office and putting things where they belong, (we can find things
in there!). The West House north apartment got all
kinds of improvements and a new paint job to get
ready for our new Horse Barn Manager to move in
with his family in July. One team built a new runin the south pasture for Judy and Ceaser’s group
(Judy loves it!). The
south wall of the
Memorial Garden
was built. Flower
Row got its annual
weeding and
planting and the
Garden even got planted that day!
Thank you all that contributed to the day with donations, including the wonderful Xerox XCIP grant for $1000 to help buy the materials and to Mary
Fisher for the $500 donation and Zweigles for the hot dogs to feed this small
army along with other donors that helped to supply the materials for the
day! For the ‘planning groups’ that came out weeks in advance to get ready
for all this work and especially to all that came and worked, got dirty, and
finished all this work! And thank you to all our
Cracker Box volunteers (including board members that lead the teams and ran for supplies!)
And of course, we would be remiss if we didn’t give a big THANK EWE to Mary Novick,
Board Treasurer, who puts this day together
for us for the past four years! She deserves
THANK EWES!!!
Thank you to everyone that continues to support the staff and volunteers

Grants Helping Us In 2015 Through Rochester Area Community Foundation and an anonymous donor, Cracker
Box Palace received a $21,000 grant to be used for new pastures and fences and for general operations.
Rochester Area Community Foundation and Janet Smith Buchannon for the $5,000 for
the horses.
Xerox XCIP ‘s donation for the United Way Day of Caring’s projects.
Garlocks Sealing Technologies awarded CBP a $1500 grant.
Lyons Vet Clinic donated $800 to the farm and also continue to help us with our rabbit
and barn cat care.
Davenport-Hatch Foundation awarded our Hay Mower project $7,500
The Rainbow Fund through RACF awarded $1,000 to the Historic Fund.
Mary Fisher donated $500 to help feed the Day of Caring folks
The Claude and Geraldine Wright Foundation awarded a $2500 for general operations!
STEADY Work Program continues to grow with generous donations from RACF and the Wayne
County Endowment Fund, 21st Century Grant monies, Lyons Central School and with support from people
who care!
Cracker Box Palace has welcomed our new Job Coach from Literacy Volunteers, Kris Tipton who has
trained Jeff Stevens from our Cow Barn and Willie Rockwell from the Horse Barn to coach our future participants in good job skills and attention to details so at the end of their time with CBP they can move on
to new and permanent careers as responsible and valued employees. And Kudos to our past participants
that are now gainfully employed.
New to the farm presently are Berton Guernsey of Red
Creek and Jeremy Stevens of Wolcott.

Hi Farm Fans!
Barry the Goat here again with news from the pastures. Summer is here
and we’re looking forward to the new hay coming in the barns, the visitors
coming back (to bring treats to the goats of course) and to all the events
and tours that come with summer! The pigs have made all new mud holes
and the chickens are back out in their runs dusting and picking at bugs.
